As the ONE evening restricted exclusively for our members each and every year, we hope you will join us for the 277th Annual Meeting of The Charleston Library Society. As we wrap up an incredible and reflective 276th year, we remain in awe of the inspired founders, the dedicated Board of Trustees, and the returning members who have kept the oldest cultural institution in the South, continuously operating through so many generations.
The meeting commences with a review of the year and business agenda hosted by the members of the Board of Trustees, followed by our keynote speaker, Barnie Howell, founder of Books in Every Bag.
This event is open to only to our membership, please fill out the form below to RSVP.
About Books in Every Bag:
Books in Every Bag is a local literacy initiative to help prepare children for success in kindergarten and schooling beyond, and is a free program for all children from birth to five years of age in the Tri-County Charleston, South Carolina, metropolitan area. Meeting the children where they are is an important way to capture them – and this is why the program begins with partnering with local hospitals to give each newborn a cloth bag filled with board books when they leave the hospital. Each bag will also include a newsletter to the parents with guides on how to start reading with their child, a flyer from the South Carolina Early Childhood Advisory Council, SCECAC, with information about the First five online resource tools available to all parents, and how to enroll in the Books in Every Bag initiative. The Charleston Library Society’s Book Drop is aligning with Books in Every Bag to supply a First Library Book Set to every bag that newborns receive. The book set includes three individual books targeted at the first three stages of literacy development, yet published in-house using archival and historical material.
Children enrolled in the Books in Every Bag program receive a bookstore-quality, age-specific book sent to their home or daycare center every month until their fifth birthday. With each book, parents receive a newsletter with literacy information related to the child’s development with tips on how to best read to the child to stimulate comprehension and increase the enjoyment of reading together. If there are multiple children in the household under five years of age, each child receives a monthly book appropriate for their age and stage of development. Book-specific activity pages are included with each book to enhance the joy of reading.
