The work of the Red Cross with the World Affairs Council of Charleston. The Portuguese Ambassador to the United States with N.C. Zeitgeist Foundation. And The Colour of Music Festival. As the cultural and literary epicenter of the South since 1748, it makes perfect sense that this was our week, as it was all things educational, inspirational, and enlightening.  

Given that we are kicking off the year of the 250th, and celebrating the French relationships that helped form our democracy, the French Feté of music last night could not have been more uplifting. Founded by Lee Pringle, a career leader and artistic director well-known in Charleston for his work with the Symphony, Gospel Choir, and many others, The Colour of Music Festival, inspired by composer Joseph Bologne, the Chevalier Saint-Georges, is the country’s largest Black classical music organization, showcasing gifted classical composers and performers of African descent. Lee brings the extensive festival of musicians to Charleston every February from all over the world as an annual celebration in conjunction with Black History Month. We are so fortunate to host one of their performances each year, but there are many more around town. Looking at next week, we are reminded of an extensive area of study within our archives –thesciences, discovery, and the mind – quite a topic during our formative years. We will welcome author Susanne Paola Antonetta for a personal look at her recent nonfiction release, The Devil’s Castle – a reflection on the disturbing and complex history of psychiatry that also envisions a more compassionate, enlightened approach to consciousness and mental health care. “This is a story of tragedy, resilience, and hope—a rallying cry for change that dares to challenge the limits of how we define and support the human mind.” – Goodreads.    

Arts and culture touch every corner of curiosity for those who are interested. We’re thrilled to play a part in bringing it to life each and every week.
