Speaker Series: Jonas Pate
October 21 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Calling all OBX fans! CLS is delighted to welcome Jonas Pate, one of the creators of the hit TV series Outer Banks, for an insightful talk about what it is like to film in Charleston, to have a career as a filmmaker, and to meet the challenges that emerge when creating a show like OBX. Jonas and his twin brother Josh spent a lot of time in Charleston during their youth, because their parents owned SNOB, High Cotton and a number of other restaurants. Jonas wanted to showcase the Lowcountry to the world, and he also used Dickens as a role model by naming characters after family, friends, or places that reflect Charleston’s geography and personality. Tickets are $10 for CLS members and $15 for nonmembers. Tickets can be purchased by clicking the link below or calling 843-723-9912.
Created by brothers Josh and Jonas Pate and Shannon Burke, Outer Banks is set in a coastal town along the Outer Banks of North Carolina (but actually filmed in Charleston!), where there is a stark social divide between wealthy seasonal residents and working-class locals (who have the nicknames “Kooks” and “Pogues”, respectively). The show follows a group of ‘Pogue’ teenagers who live at The Cut, and are determined to find out what happened to the missing father of the group’s ringleader, John B. Along the way, they discover a legendary treasure that is tied to John B’s father. Chased by the law and a wealthy group of Kooks from Figure Eight, the Pogues seek to overcome obstacles such as drugs, love, fighting, friendship, money, and the disenfranchisement of being an American teen.
