Carolina Day, celebrated on June 28th each year, marks the anniversary of the Battle of Sullivan’s Island fought on June 28, 1776, where a small group of South Carolina Patriots successfully repelled a British naval force. As a runway to next year’s celebration of America’s 250th birthday, we are partnering with SC250 to delve deeper into South Carolina Revolutionary lore through a series of late eighteenth-century tales, with this first installment featuring history buff Norm Rickeman, and an analysis into his book Unsung: William Moultrie and the Battle of Sullivan’s Island. Norm Rickeman, a retired business consultant and native Minnesotan, now lives on Sullivan’s Island where he volunteers for the National Park Service at Fort Moultrie. His fascination with history, particularly figures like Francis Marion and Osceola, led him to delve deeper into the untold stories of Fort Moultrie’s history. Norm frequently shares these intriguing tales with visitors from around the world, and his presentation, UNSUNG: William Moultrie and The Battle of Sullivan’s Island, serves as a companion to this book. Norm holds a degree in mathematics and economics from the University of Minnesota and an MBA from the University of Chicago.
