The presentation will look back over the last 150 plus years of the pharmacy profession with an emphasis on Charleston, SC, and Apothecary’s Hall, one of the oldest pharmacies in the US.  Information on the origin of the name “Apothecary’s Hall” and the history of this historic Charleston pharmacy including photographs of the pharmacy when it was first given to the Charleston Museum in 1920’s will be presented. We will also show and describe many of the tools of the apothecary which were used to compound or prepare the medications that were prescribed prior to the development of the US Pharmaceutical Industry and the passage of the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906. The presentation will also include photographs and discussion on many of the beautiful advertising pieces used around the turn of the 19th century including “Show Globes”, “Species Jars”, “Show Mortars” and Drug Trade Cards.
