Antioxidants Myth Buster: Do Antioxidants Make You Live Long and Prosper?
Speaker: Dr. Ken Tew, Ph.D., D.Sc., Hollings Cancer Center
Topic description: We’ve all heard that antioxidants are found in blueberries, wine, pomegranate, oregano, asparagus, avocados, walnuts, pecans, and more…but what exactly do they do for you?
Speaker bio:
Dr. Ken Tew is an international leader in cancer drug discovery and development. His earlier research was pivotal in the design of treatments for hormone refractory prostate cancer. More recently his research has been instrumental in the late-stage clinical testing of three novel drugs; one shows promise in treating ovarian and lung cancer, and another has potential as a modifier of bone marrow mediated immune function. Dr. Tew is also working to understand how cancer cells develop resistance to different drugs. Such research has led to discoveries about how oxidative stress impacts cells, and how they counter it. Highly respected by his colleagues, Dr. Tew was elected Chair of Drug Discovery & Regulatory Affairs for the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (2011-2013) and Chair for the Section of Pharmaceutical Sciences of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (2012-2015).
