He began his career as a director of documentary films for the BBC but is best known as an author of over a dozen novels and the writer of the award-winning plays and screenplays. His Tony-nominated play Shadowlands became an Academy Award-nominated film in 1993 starring his writing skills include: Nell, First Night, Gladiator, Elizabeth: The Golden Age, Les Miserables, Unbroken, and Everest.
