Careers & Internships

The Charleston Library Society offers part-time internships throughout the year for college students interested in a career in the non-profit sector. Students may apply to assist specific departments, options being: Marketing & Communications, Bindery & Conservation, and Library Services. Interns will develop skills through targeted projects, which may include promotion and publicity efforts for programs, social media planning, special collections care, event support, and library management. Our internship opportunities are unpaid, however, students may be eligible to earn college credit and other Library Society benefits. Internship opportunities are seasonally offered, except for Bindery Internships, which are accepted on a rolling basis.

Summer: May 15 – August 15, applications accepted March 15-April 15th

Fall: October 1 – December 15, applications accepted June 15-September 20 (Deadline extended!)

Spring: February 15 – May 15, applications accepted October 15-November 1

Collections Assessment Specialist

The Charleston Library Society is looking to recruit a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Collection Assessment Specialist, who will be responsible for the examination and accurate documentation of paper-based materials in our collection. This includes books, manuscripts, prints, drawings, maps, photographs, and other archival documents.

Bindery & Conservation Intern

Bindery and Conservation Internship experiences may include the fixing and repair of historic materials, an introduction to material science, creative bookbinding, and library activities such as collection preservation and assessment. Bindery Internships are accepted on a rolling basis, so please feel free to apply at any time. 

Development & Membership Intern

Development and Membership Internship opportunities involve an introduction to nonprofit fundraising and development efforts, organization and collation of membership information, outreach to the CLS membership, as well as assisting in the creation of promotional material for special events and programming at the Library Society.
