SUMMARY:Book Tour Exclusive // Mitch Albom's Return
DESCRIPTION:RESCHEDULED FROM OCTOBER 30TH \nThere’s no denying most of us would welcome a do-over moment every once in a while. This concept is at the heart of Mitch Albom’s new book\, Twice\, which will be on national tour this Fall. Aptly named\, this will be Mitch Albom’s second visit to Charleston and the Library Society – a tradition that we hope will continue for years to come. As an internationally renowned storyteller and bestselling author\, Mitch Albom is a powerful voice\, in the written word\, but also for his personal philanthropy commitments to support children. Along with Buxton Books\, it is an honor to welcome his return to the Main Reading Room and sit in the audience for a personal and exclusive look at his next bestseller. \nIf you are unable to attend the event but would like to purchase one or more signed copies\, please visit Buxton Books here. \nAbout the Author \nMitch Albom\, a “writer with soul” (Los Angeles Times)\, is an author\, screenwriter\, playwright\, and nationally syndicated columnist. Four of his books\, including Tuesdays With Morrie\, The Five People You Meet in Heaven\, For One More Day\, and Have a Little Faith\, have been made into highly acclaimed television movies for ABC. Albom has founded nine charities in and around Detroit\, including the first ever 24-hour medical clinic for homeless children in America\, and also operates an orphanage in Port-Au-Prince\, Haiti\, which he visits every month without exception. He lives with his wife\, Janine\, in Detroit. \nAbout the Book \nWhat if you got to do everything in your life —twice? The heart of Mitch Albom’s newest novel is a stunning love story that dares to explore how our unchecked desires might mean losing what we’ve had all along. When he is eight years old\, Alfie Logan discovers the magical ability to get a second chance at everything. He can undo any moment and live it again. The one catch: he must accept the consequences of his second try—for better or worse. He grows up correcting his mistakes and saving himself from adolescent embarrassments. He even takes foolishly dangerous risks\, just to see what it’s like to come close to death\, before tapping back to safety. Eventually\, Alfie turns his gift to his love life\, studying his crushes and going back to make himself more appealing. In time\, he falls deeply in love with Gianna\, the woman he believes is the one. He seems to find contentment. But as the years pass\, Alfie’s eye begins to wander. Which is when he learns a lone caveat to his power: once he undoes a love\, that person can never fall in love with him again. Knowing if he gives into to temptation\, he will risk losing what he has with Gianna\, Alfie makes a choice that changes his life forever. The book begins many years later\, after an ailing Alfie is arrested for allegedly cheating and winning millions at a casino roulette wheel. As a curious detective interrogates him\, he slowly uncovers Alfie’s incredible story\, and its most unlikely conclusion. In Twice\, America’s favorite storyteller\, Mitch Albom\, is at the top of his powers. A love story that is enchanting\, probing\, and clairvoyant in matters of the heart\, Twice will make you think\, weep\, and overflow with love from beginning to end.

SUMMARY:Sealed with Hope: "Letters from Sweden"
DESCRIPTION:RESCHEDULED EVENT FROM SEPTEMBER 2025 \nA poignant\, true story of love\, faith\, and endurance in the aftermath of World War II\, drawn from hundreds of handwritten letters\, Letters from Sweden is a historical romance that brings to life the story of Bill—a 28-year-old Purple Heart recipient and Gettysburg seminary student—and Mary\, a determined and educated 22-year-old public health pioneer in South Carolina. Their chance meeting led to a whirlwind romance\, and an engagement sealed in 1947 on the same day Bill departed for an 18-month academic and religious study program in Sweden. Through long months of separation\, their devotion to each other was tested and strengthened by their faith\, commitment\, and the written word. With vivid historical detail and emotional depth\, Letters from Sweden is a testament to the enduring power of love across distance and time\, a WWII love story of his parents\, written by author (and Library Society Member) David Schaeffer. \nIf you are unable to attend the event but would like to purchase one or more signed copies\, please visit Buxton Books here. \nIf you purchased tickets for the event in September your tickets are valid for this event. If you are unable to attend the new event date please call (843) 723-9912. \nAbout the Book \nThe “Greatest Generation” was filled with war heroes and love stories during and shortly after World War II. Love of God\, country\, and family were the priorities of young men and women facing and surviving military service at the time. Many of their love stories were told in letters written home from overseas. Hidden in dusty boxes in attics\, or locked away in storage chests\, these treasures are occasionally found and their stories finally uncovered. This is the true story of Bill\, a twenty-eight-year-old Gettysburg seminarian and Purple Heart veteran\, who was still single\, disenchanted with women\, and unsure of his future in the ministry. Mary was a twenty-two-year-old\, highly educated\, pragmatic young woman starting a public health program from scratch in Greenville\, South Carolina. After meeting\, they quickly fell in love\, and became engaged on the same day Bill left for an eighteen-month post-graduate religious and academic study program in Sweden in January 1947. Based on hundreds of handwritten letters during and after the war\, this nonfiction historical romance explores how one couple’s love\, commitment\, faith\, and trust were sustained and grew across an ocean of separation shortly after the Second World War. \nAbout the Author \nDavid Schaeffer practiced law in Atlanta for thirty-eight years before moving to Kiawah Island with his wife Kim. He served as President of the Atlanta Bar Association and Chair of its Litigation Section and received the Atlanta Bar’s highest honor\, the Charles E. Watkins\, Jr. Award for distinguished and sustained service in 2015. At 44\, he climbed Mt. Whitney\, which launched a lifelong passion for climbing incredible peaks that has taken him all over the world and provided the content to author two books\, Five Big Mountains and the second\, Another Five Big Mountains and Treks. David has since written two other books\, Letters from Sweden\, a true love story inspired by his parents and Initiation at the Scum Pond\, his first legal thriller\, arriving in book stores this November.

SUMMARY:SC250 Series // Revitalizing History - A Wide Awake Films Documentary Premiere
DESCRIPTION:Against all odds\, outnumbered and outgunned\, the heroes of the Battle of Sullivan’s Island on June 28th\, 1776\, are once again getting their moment in the spotlight of America’s history with its 250th anniversary. Not only did this battle cement South Carolina in the history of the American Revolution to be perpetually celebrated as Carolina Day\, but it brought us heroes ranging from Col. William Moultrie and Sgt. William Jasper\, and the Carolina white-on-blue palmetto tree and crescent moon flag. On the eve of the 250th anniversary of America’s independence and Carolina Day\, be the first to experience the new Battle of Sullivan’s Island film by Wide Awake Films. As part of our SC250 partnership\, join us for a lively discussion moderated by Executive Producer and SC250 Board member\, Rob Shenk\, along with SC250 Chief Executive Officer Molly Fortune\, Director and Founder of Wide Awake Films Shane Seley\, and Historian Doug MacIntyre.    \nAbout Molly Fortune \nPrior to joining SC250\, Molly Fortune was Executive Director at the world-renowned performing arts center\, the Newberry Opera House. Under her leadership\, the Opera House hosted 150+ events each year\, greatly impacting Downtown Newberry. As Director of Restoration and Operations at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta\, Georgia\, Molly was influential in the development and implementation of new strategic initiatives such as the Fox Theatre Institute\, an outreach and consulting division for which she served as the Director of Restoration Consulting. And even before her work at the Fox\, Molly was employed by the Department of Defense as a Cultural Resource Specialist in Historic Preservation and Programming. Molly received her BFA in Interior Design from Converse College with a minor in Physics; she received an MFA in Historic Preservation from the Savannah College of Art and Design\, Summa Cum Laude with Distinction. Molly is married to LTC (ret) Christopher Kemper and has two daughters and three dogs. \nAbout Doug MacIntyre \nDoug MacIntyre is a retired business executive and a student of the American Revolution. His research led to the creation of Thomson Park to commemorate the battle at the Breach. He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and served five years as an infantry officer in the U.S. Army. Doug earned an MBA from Boston University and completed advanced management programs at Harvard\, Wharton\, and Stanford business schools. He was chair\, president\, and CEO of public and private information technology companies and served on the boards of local and national industry and civic organizations. In retirement\, he has promoted South Carolina’s technology economy\, natural resources\, and history.  \nAbout Shane Seley \nShane Seley has transformed a lifelong passion for history and storytelling into an award-winning film career. He co-founded Wide Awake Films\, which has evolved into a full-service production and post-production studio for award-winning filmmakers and museum experience developers. Wide Awake Films crafts historical content and tells stories that keep the past engaging\, relevant\, and insightful. Shane’s clients include CuriosityStream\, American Battlefield Trust\, George Washington’s Mount Vernon\, the National Park Service\, the National Museum of the US Army\, Rosa Parks Museum\, and others. Living in Kansas City\, Missouri\, Shane is a proud father\, husband\, 19th-century living historian\, and steward of old houses\, as well as a reader of history. \nAbout the Moderator \nRob Shenk is a board member of SC250 Charleston\, a local nonprofit established to support commemorative events and educational programs in the Charleston area\, and serves as the Chief Content Officer for Wide Awake Films\, a leading producer of history-centered films and museum interactives.  Rob previously held senior executive positions at George Washington’s Mount Vernon\, the American Battlefield Trust\, and E*TRADE.  Rob’s projects have earned various industry awards\, including a Thea Award for Be Washington\, a Webby Award\, a SEGD Global Design Award\, and numerous Telly Awards.  As a former US Naval officer\, Rob has a strong love of American and military history. He and his wife\, Tracey\, live in Mount Pleasant\, South Carolina. \nAbout Wide Awake Films \nWide Awake Films – Wide Awake Films is an award-winning team dedicated to creating films\, museum interactives\, and virtual reality productions that breathe new life into the stories of our past. The company was founded in 1999 on the hard work of two local Kansas City entrepreneurs with an idea to take their love of history and film and start a business honoring those two passions. Twenty years later\, they are still creating content rooted in passion\, authenticity\, and craftsmanship though the team has grown from two friends in an attic to a larger team of creative professionals who take on a wide variety of film\, museum\, exhibit\, and online projects. \nAbout SC 250 \nSC250 Charleston is intended to serve as an umbrella for Charleston-area community organizations\, governmental entities\, and business enterprises interested in conceiving\, building and sponsoring initiatives that commemorate the American Revolution and leading roles played by Charleston’s people and places. This program is sponsored (in part) by the South Carolina American Revolution Sestercentennial Commission. SC250 was established by the SC Legislature to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Revolutionary-Era and highlight the state’s significant role in securing America’s freedom by engaging and inspiring South Carolinians and visitors through heritage tourism\, rural economic impact initiatives\, and educational programs. Contents and opinions do not necessarily reflect the views or policies of SC250\, nor does the mention of trade names or commercial products constitute endorsement or recommendation by SC250.

SUMMARY:CLS Wine Club // Fall Reds
DESCRIPTION:After emerging from a lively conversation in our Fellows Lounge\, CLS Wine Club has become a special tradition\, this Fall marking the start of its third year. As seasonally appropriate\, reds are the category for the cooler months\, and this November will follow suit\, with a tour of Italian reds from the Alps to Africa. Founded by aficionados Jerry Mitchell and Tim Cantopher\, the CLS Wine Club delivers tasting and curation around the complexities of wine coupled with a bit of wit and wisdom\, and always the knowledge of a partnering sommelier to educate on lesser-known vineyards\, small-production varietals\, and special anecdotes from the trade. \nPlease Note: These wines are available in limited and time-sensitive quantities; therefore\, we must secure them ahead of time.  For this reason\, your admission also includes one of each of the four bottles to take home. (Avg $35/bottle) For those who come as a couple\, there is an option for two people and four bottles. Seating is limited in order to host a conversation-style wine tasting where the experts will walk us through four specifically chosen bottles and dissect the nuance associated with each. Part of participating in the wine club is the opportunity to purchase wines that would otherwise not be available at retail. \nThere are two ticket options available: \n*Single $285 // $145 ticket price + $140 wine price (4 bottles to take home) \n*Couple $430 // $290 ticket price + $140 wine price (4 bottles to take home) \nFellows members will have the first option for securing seats.
