SUMMARY:Spring Symposium // Tenacity's Renaissance
DESCRIPTION:Described by scholar W.E.B. DuBois as the “leading portrait painter of the race\,” Charleston native and prolific artist Edwin “Teddy” Augustus Harleston paved the way for artists of color in the South. Joined by his wife and photographer\, Elise\, the two not only planted the foundations for a Harlem Renaissance-esque artistic movement in the South\, but also passionately participated in the Civil Rights movement. Award-winning writer\, historian and filmmaker Charles Kaufmann joins us for a two-day symposium to illuminate the work and lives of two profoundly impactful artists during the late 19th and early 20th centuries\, and the enduring love for their craft\, and one another\, that kept them going in times of strife. During the evening program\, Charles will be joined by a panel representing the array of organizations which collaborated in the crafting of the documentary\, including Elizabeth Chew\, Chief Executive Officer of the South Carolina Historical Society\, Sara Arnold of the Gibbes Museum\, Harlan Greene\, and Georgette Mayo with the Avery Research Center. The soundtrack of the film features choral and piano music by the Charlestonian composer and educator Harl Fleming\, who happens to be Edwin’s nephew and an important component of the Harleston’s story\, compounding the overall character development and further ties to the music of the Charleston Renaissance. \nEVENING PROGRAM ONLY (Thursday\, May 8th)  $35 // Admission to the lecture on Thursday\, 6:00 PM–7:00 PM \nTWO-DAY SYMPOSIUM (Thursday\, May 8th & Friday\, May 9th) – $55 // Admission to Thursday’s lecture\, plus the extended session on Friday from 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM\, which will include the two-hour screening of Tenacity and small-group discussion with Charles Kaufmann. \nTenacity Trailer: The Story of Edwin and Elise Harleston here! \nThis program is in partnership with the South Carolina Historical Society\, the Avery Research Center\, and the Gibbes Museum of Art. Panelists for the Thursday program include: Harlan Greene\, Elizabeth Chew\, Sara Arnold\, and Georgette Mayo.  \nAbout Charles Kaufmann \nCharles Kaufmann is an award-winning writer\, historian\, filmmaker\, composer and the founding director of The Longfellow Chorus\, a professional non-profit performing arts organization in Portland\, Maine. SUMMARY:CLS Wine Club // Spring Whites
DESCRIPTION:As the newest CLS tradition\, created through members in our Fellows Lounge\, CLS Wine Club continues with great acclaim. For our Spring session\, we will focus on white varietals deserving some attention (specifics varietal yet to be finalized)\, along with academic and nuanced insights from our founding aficionados Jerry Mitchell and Tim Cantopher. Their learned preferences and curiosities from storied outings and clubs centered around the complexities of wine coupled with our partner Monarch Wines\, allow just the right blend of lesser-known vineyards and small-production varietals blended with a bit of wit and wisdom\, to boot. Capacity is limited so please reserve your seat soon! \nThis Spring we will be taking a World Tour to explore the diverse offerings of the varietal\, Chenin Blanc. \nPlease Note: These wines are available in limited and time-sensitive quantities; therefore\, we must secure them ahead of time. For this reason\, your admission also includes one of each of the four bottles to take home. (Avg $35/bottle) For those who come as a couple\, there is an option for two people and four bottles. Seating is limited in order to host a conversation-style wine tasting where the experts will walk us through four specifically chosen bottles and dissect the nuance associated with each. Part of participating in the wine club is the opportunity to purchase wines that would otherwise not be available at retail. \nAbout Monarch and Justin Coleman \nYears of selecting wines for some of NYC’s favorite spots (Balthazar\, Commerce\, Morandi\, The Mark) have helped Justin (owner and proprietor of Monarch Wines) cultivate strong relationships with both European and American winemakers\, importers\, and distributors. From lugging bottles to creating beverage programs\, to managing operations\, Justin has worked with some of the most exalted names in the business. Seeking a slower pace of life for his young family at the time (wife\, Sarah\, and eldest daughter\, Fia)\, Justin headed south to Charleston in 2013\, landing at The Ordinary as General Manager. At The Ordinary\, Justin fostered an appreciation for\, and understanding of\, the community in Charleston. Monarch Wine Merchants opened in 2017\, filling a void in the market at the time for a true neighborhood wine shop\, focused on wine and only wine. Delivering the highest level of customer service has become a hallmark of the shop. Justin is forever passionate about keeping the shelves well-stocked at the brick and mortar\, while also sourcing highly allocated wines for both local clients and those further afield. \nThere are two ticket options available: \n*Single $285 // $145 ticket price + $140 wine price (4 bottles to take home) \n*Couple $430 // $290 ticket price + $140 wine price (4 bottles to take home) \nFellows members will have first option for securing seats.

SUMMARY:Opera! by Shakespeare

SUMMARY:Fresh Perspectives from the Diaries of the 14th Earl of Derby
DESCRIPTION:The 14th Earl of Derby\, Edward George Geoffrey Smith Stanley\, held the role of Prime Minister to Queen Victoria for three terms in addition to his positions as the longest-serving leader of the Conservative Party in the United Kingdom. However\, his prolific journey through statesmanship actually began on our side of the Atlantic\, in the young state of New York. In documenting his travels as he explored the East coast (Charleston a stop on his route)\, Edward Stanley’s experiences dictate his path to an incredible political career. As part of another grand tour\, The Countess of Derby who happens to be married to the 19th Earl of Derby\, is touring the east coast and other designated cities to share more personally about the recent publication of A North American Tour Journal 1824-25 The Making of a Prime Minister. The Earl of Derby’s remarkable journey across America and Canada and his profound insights have the power to reshape our understanding of the nation’s history. In partnership with the SC Historical Society\, we are so pleased to host Lady Derby\, along with her dear friend and UVA Historian\, Professor Andrew O’Shaughnessy\, to reflect on the incredible life and contributions of Edward Stanley as one of the most inspiring thinkers of the Victorian Era. \nIf you are unable to attend the event\, but would like to purchase one or more signed copies\, please call Buxton Books to place your order at (843) 723-1670. \nAbout the Book \nOn 21st July 1824 Edward Geoffrey Stanley landed in New York\, after a sea passage of 37 days from Liverpool. Over the following eight months before his return to Britain he made a remarkable tour of eastern Canada and the young Republic of the United States or America\, traveling by horse\, carriage and boat\, along tracks\, lakes and rivers. He explored New England\, upstate New York\, Niagara Falls\, the St Lawrence River and the great lakes of Ontario and Erie. He crossed the Appalachian Mountains\, before traveling down the Ohio and Mississippi rivers to New Orleans. Stanley was horrified to see the condition of the enslaved Africans working on the plantations in the Deep South\, alongside the destruction of the Native Americans and the abject poverty of the Irish emigrants. He continued his journey overland from Alabama to Charleston\, South Carolina\, before taking a coastal ship up to Washington DC where he witnessed the inauguration of the sixth American President John Quincy Adams. Stanley’s encounters with the culture\, economics\, politics and peoples of North America stood him in good stead for his later career as a political reformer and distinguished statesman. \nAbout The Countess of Derby \nThe Countess of Derby\, Caroline\, known as Cazzy to her friends\, is a distinguished historian\, author\, and cultural ambassador. Born a Neville\, married to a Stanley and curator to the Royal Collection\, she developed a profound love of heritage and an interest in the intersection of history and contemporary issues.  She has dedicated her career to uncovering and sharing lesser-known historical narratives and artworks that she has unearthed during her restoration of her Derby’s ancestral home\, Knowsley Hall\, to its former glory. As of March 2025 she will have published the youth travel journals of the 14th Earl of Derby\, an extraordinary historical account that offers fresh insights into early 19th-century North America. Caroline’s passion for storytelling and her commitment to historical preservation make her a captivating speaker and an influential voice in the literary and cultural communities. \nAbout Professor Andrew O’Shaughnessy \nAndrew O’Shaughnessy is a distinguished historian and Professor of History at the University of Virginia. From 2003 to 2022\, he served as Vice President of The Thomas Jefferson Foundation (Monticello) and led the Robert H. Smith International Center for Jefferson Studies. A dual citizen of Britain and the United States\, O’Shaughnessy completed his undergraduate and doctoral degrees at Oxford University. His illustrious teaching career includes roles at Eton College\, Southern Methodist University\, and the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh\, where he chaired the History department. O’Shaughnessy is the acclaimed author of The Men Who Lost America\, which won eight national awards\, including the George Washington Book Prize and the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution Excellence in American History Book Award. His other notable works include An Empire Divided and The Illimitable Freedom of the Human Mind. A Fellow of the Royal Historical Society\, he also serves as an editor of the Jeffersonian America series. O’Shaughnessy has also co-edited The European Friends of the American Revolution\, which was published in 2023. His latest book\, which will be published by Yale early in 2025\, is co-authored with Trevor Burnard\, The American Revolution and the Crisis of the British Empire. O’Shaughnessy’s expertise and contributions make him a leading voice in American history. \nPrior to the program\, we invite our Fellows Members to enjoy a Happy Hour from 5:00 – 6:00pm\, downstairs in the Dr. Suzan D. Boyd Fellows Club Lounge.

SUMMARY:"South of My Dreams": a Memoir
DESCRIPTION:A memoir\, its writer\, and the American dream. Author and Jewish Studies professor F.K. Clementi joins us to present her memoir\, South of My Dreams\, the unapologetic journey through the trials and tribulations that garner the American Dream. Simultaneously merciless and humorous\, F. K. Clementi’s memoir is ultimately an inspiring account of a woman’s disillusionment and personal rebirth. Entertaining\, original\, and poetic\, it will resonate with all who fight hard for what they want and refuse to put aside their childhood dreams. An attractive program for those also interested in the insights of a memoirist\, Clementi will also explore what it is like to write a memoir\, and how lessons learned in life equally translate to pen and paper\, \nIf you are unable to attend the event\, but would like to purchase one or more signed copies\, please visit Buxton Books here. \nAbout the Book  \nIntroducing a new Jewish voice from the South that tells us with humor\, panache\, and raw frankness her irresistible story of what it means to become an American woman today. South of My Dreams follows the adventures and misadventures of Fania\, a quixotic heroine\, who dreamed all her life of making it big in New York City. Growing up in 1970s Italy\, Fania felt constrained by a stale environment\, corrupt society\, and national culture hostile to women’s independence. In pursuit of her childhood fantasy\, and heavily influenced by Hollywood films\, she leaves everything behind to begin her new life in New York\, where she thinks her American Dream awaits. Instead\, her American nightmare begins. From miraculous breakthroughs to tragic setbacks\, Fania’s path is marked by an irreparable trauma while also being graced by intense love\, faithful friendships\, and inspiring mentors. Through dramatic twists and turns—and to her great surprise—Fania learns the true meaning of the American expression to “go south.” Simultaneously merciless and humorous\, F. K.
