In fact\, for over twenty years\, Amazon had emerged as a Wall Street darling and its “customer obsession” approach made it indelibly attractive to consumers across the globe. However\, the company was not benevolent; it operated in ways that ensured it stayed on top. Lina Khan’s paper would light a fire in Washington\, and in a matter of years\, she would become the head of the FTC. DESCRIPTION:Join our resident bookbinder and conservator\, James Davis\, to learn the art of hand bookbinding and take home with your very own journal. Starting with paper\, board\, and thread\, students will be instructed on the techniques and practices of constructing a well-made blank book from scratch. Each journal will feature hand stitching and decorative marbled paper covers. Discussions will focus on the history of bookbinding and conservation techniques for preserving books within our libraries and museums. \nAll materials will be provided and no prior bookbinding experience is necessary. DESCRIPTION:Join the Library Society to welcome back Porto Seguro\, a six-person band playing Brazilian samba\, bossa nova\, and choro genres: mellow music with a soulful vibe\, like a great cup of coffee – and the band’s blend is Brazilian with upbeat American energy. \nJazz vocalist\, Alva Anderson\, has been Port Seguro’s headlining performer since 2020. Her soulful interpretations and captivating interpretations bring even more energy to the show than when the band last appeared at the Library Society in 2019. Other members include: Susan Conant on flutes\, John Holenko on mandolin\, Tom Noren on guitar\, John Kennedy on bass\, and Josh Hoover on drums. \nTickets*: PURCHASE HERE \n$25 – Members or $35 – General Admission \nAbout the Band: \nPorto Seguro and vocalist\, Alva Anderson\, love sharing their enthusiasm for Brazilian music with audiences. The core members (Susan Conant\, flutes; John Holenko\, mandolins; Tom Noren\, guitar; and John Kennedy\, bass) started jamming together in 2014 on choro\, a lighthearted mix of Afro and European influences from early 20th century Brazil. In 2019 they were thrilled to have Alva Anderson sit in on a few sets. She immediately became the band’s headliner adding her expert jazz vocals and soulful spirit to the group. Along with Alva\, the group added drums bringing together a sound that leans heavily into Brazilian samba and bossa classics. The result was magic! Their lively shows now include well-known favorites (think Tom Jobim\, One Note Samba\, Girl from Ipanema) combined with lesser-known but equally wonderful gems of bossa nova (Brazil’s distinctive contribution to jazz) and samba (the raucous music of Carnival). The group has appeared for two full seasons at Charleston’s Forte Jazz Lounge\, and numerous local festivals and concert series including Concerts at the Library (Charleston Library Society)\, Piccolo Spoleto\, North Charleston Arts Festival\, Music on Sunday (Greenville\, SC)\, Music on Malphrus (Bluffton\, SC) and the Gage Hall Coffeehouse.

The documentary is the result of film adaptations of Brown’s three short stories: Boy and Dog\, Wild Thing\, and Samaritans. Hawkins captured sincere and revealing comments from both Larry and his wife Mary Annie Brown\, who offered genuine insights into what it was like to be Larry Brown the fiction writer. The Rough South of Larry Brown premiered at the 2002 Full Frame Documentary Film Festival in Durham\, North Carolina\, and subsequently entered it into a number of regional film festivals. The documentary won several awards\, including an Off-Hollywood Oscar for Best Feature Film at the 2002 Ohio Independent Film Festival\, Best Feature at the 2002 Savannah Film and Video Festival\, and Best Documentary at the 2003 Oxford\, Mississippi Film Festival. Brown died in November 2004 and was buried at Tula\, Mississippi. \nAbout the Filmmaker \nGary Hawkins was born and raised on a farm in Trinity\, North Carolina. His first film – produced when he was 17 – featured his grandmother making her “world famous” fried apple pies. The film was called DRIED\, FRIED\, AND LAID TO THE SIDE. He followed up DRIED\, FRIED with THREADBARE\, a quiet meditation on the sunlight dapples that animated his grandmother’s quilts. His third film captured a violent thunderstorm at night. \nHawkins continued to make films on a wide range of subjects throughout his 20s. His breakthrough doc\, THE ROUGH SOUTH OF HARRY CREWS debuted on UNC-TV in 1989\, and went on to win several awards\, including an Emmy Award. The CREWS bio is currently being restored for inclusion in the Criterion Collection.  His next ROUGH SOUTH entry was THE ROUGH SOUTH OF LARRY BROWN. Cited by the Oxford American as “an essential Southern documentary\,” the BROWN doc won several awards at top tier festivals and enjoyed a lengthy run on French television. \nHawkins experimental short\, ZERO IRONY (assembled from decades-old footage of his grandmother’s farm) premiered at the Rotterdam International Film Festival in 2015\, and was subsequently invited to the Edinburgh and 46th Poetry International film festivals. ZERO IRONY can be seen on the Labocine website\, a hybrid streaming platform designed to showcase science in cinema. \nHawkins jazz doc\, IN MY MIND\, premiered at the Kennedy Center in 2010\, then made a run through the festival circuit that culminated in a screening and discussion at the\nNational Gallery of Art in 2015. IN MY MIND is a collaboration with jazz pianist\, Jason Moran that deconstructs his tribute to Thelonious Monk’s infamous 1959 Town Hall concert. Championed by art historian\, Christian Delage\, IN MY MIND enjoyed a 2022 run through France that concluded with a special screening at La Filmothèque du Quartier Latin in Paris. \nHawkins is a screenwriter and a 2000 Sundance Fellow (for an unproduced screenplay called DOWNTIME). He also wrote the screenplay for JOE\, starring Nicolas Cage and Tye Sheridan. JOE received accolades at the Vienna\, Deauville\, Munich\, and Edinburgh festivals\, and recently enjoyed a resurgence on HBO. Hawkins is currently at work on a coming-of-age series for Rough House Pictures called ZONA ROSA. Based in part on true events\, ZONA ROSA is a rowdy\, coming-of-age drama set in a Texas border town\, circa 1989. \nHawkins is one of the original founders of the UNC School of Filmmaking. His most successful directing students are David Gordon Green (GEORGE WASHINGTON\, PINEAPPLE EXPRESS)\, Jeff Nichols (MUD\, THE BIKERIDERS)\, and Craig Zobel (COMPLIANCE\, MARE OF EASTTOWN). In 2010 Hawkins was picked by Variety Magazine as one of the top ten filmmaking instructors in America. \nCurrently\, Hawkins teaches screenwriting and nonfiction filmmaking at Duke University\, where he is ranked in the top 5% of all humanities instructors.

Recognized in February 2022 by the Post and Courier newspaper as one of twelve Black Leaders in South Carolina\, Lanham is a strong advocate for the African-American role in natural resources conservation\, intrigued with how culture and ethnic prisms can bend perceptions of nature and its care. DESCRIPTION:Sprouting from a lively conversation down in our Fellows Lounge last year\, CLS Wine Club originated with the hopes of bringing our members’ love for literacy and wine together. Our gracious hosts—each hailing from storied outings and clubs centered around the complexities of wine—have agreed to share wit and wisdom twice a year. Special thanks to Jerry Mitchell\, who we have named the “Wine Intellect\,” and Tim Cantopher\, who shares knowledge as “Taste Master.” \nIn addition\, we have partnered with the renowned expert Justin Coleman of Monarch Wines and for this special evening of tasting and access to unique vineyards and small-production varietals. This season’s theme is Alsace Whites featuring varietals such as Rieslings (on the dryer side)\, Gewürztraminers\, Pinot Blancs\, and Gruner Veltliners. \nSeating is limited in order to host a conversation-style wine tasting where the experts will walk us through four specifically chosen bottles and dissect the nuance associated with each. Part of participating in the wine club is the opportunity to purchase wines that would otherwise not be available at retail. Because these wines are available in such limited quantities to start with\, we must secure them ahead of time\, therefore your ticket will include one of each bottles to take home (Avg $35/bottle)\, as part of the overall ticket price. Each ticket includes your attendance to the event in addition to the four bottles. \nAbout Monarch and Justin Coleman \nYears of selecting wines for some of NYC’s favorite spots (Balthazar\, Commerce\, Morandi\, The Mark) have helped Justin (owner and propietor of Monarch Wines) cultivate strong relationships with both European and American winemakers\, importers\, and distributors. From lugging bottles to creating beverage programs\, to managing operations\, Justin has worked with some of the most exalted names in the business. Seeking a slower pace of life for his young family at the time (wife\, Sarah\, and eldest daughter\, Fia)\, Justin headed south to Charleston in 2013\, landing at The Ordinary as General Manager. At The Ordinary\, Justin fostered an appreciation for\, and understanding of\, the community in Charleston. Monarch Wine Merchants opened in 2017\, filling a void in the market at the time for a true neighborhood wine shop\, focused on wine and only wine. SUMMARY:Literary Torchbearers ~ Retrospective on Larry McMurtry & Pat Conroy
DESCRIPTION:Following its publication in 1925\, The Great Gatsby sold poorly and quickly fell out of print. F. Scott Fitzgerald felt the failure sharply. When he died in 1940 he believed that he and Gatsby were doomed to obscurity. Resurrection of The Great Gatsby\, and of Fitzgerald’s reputation\, came in the form of one Edmund Wilson\, who was Fitzgerald’s Princeton classmate and best friend.  It was Wilson\, himself an acclaimed editor\, who pushed hard in 1941 for the re-publication of The Great Gatsby – and the rest\, as they say\, is history.  Gatsby now sells in the millions\, and is considered among the finest of all American Novels. \nAdvocates like Wilson could be called Literary Torchbearers\, loyalists who keep the flame burning for authors who have passed on. Another of these would certainly be Wayne and Dartie Flynt\, who befriended To Kill a Mockingbird author Harper Lee in her final years\, and recently published Afternoons with Harper Lee\, a reminiscence of Lee and their time with her. \nWe don’t have to look far to find Literary Torchbearers in our midst. One of them is George Getschow\, former Dallas bureau chief for the Wall Street Journal\, frequent judge for the Pulitzer Prise\, and most importantly\, a good friend and supporter of Lonesome Dove and The Last Picture Show author Larry McMurtry. Getschow started a workshop for aspiring writers in Archer City\, Texas – McMurtry’s home town – in 2005. When McMurtry died in 2021\, Getschow gathered many of McMurtry’s friends\, family\, and colleagues for a dramatic memorial service beneath the Texas Stars.  From the energy of this\, Getschow solicited essays about McMurtry: Pastures of the Empty Page was published a few months ago.  As fate would have it\, that’s how George Getschow became Larry McMurtry’s Literary Torchbearer. \nAnother pair of Literary Torchbearers are John Warley and Jonathan Haupt. Warley was Pat Conroy’s Citadel classmate\, baseball teammate\, and lifelong friend.  As such\, Warley was a witness to may of the family dramas that drove Conroy’s work. After Pat’s death\, Warley actively supported the Pat Conroy Literary Center\, and has appeared on numerous panels discussing Conroy’s work.  Jonathan Haupt is the Executive Director of the Pat Conroy Library\, Founding Director of the Pat Conroy Literary Festival\, and editor of the collection of Pat Conroy essays that was published in 2015\, Our Prince of Scribes.  Together they continue to keep Conroy’s legacy thriving. \nCollectively Haupt\, Warly and Getschow will provide a thrilling evening’s discussion on the work of Literary Torchbearers.  They will be joined on stage by James Scott\, who will perform as moderator. Scott is also an author\, Pulitzer nominee and Archer City attendee. Erik Calonius will be providing an introduction to the evening’s talk. Calonius is a former foreign correspondent for the Wall Street Journal and a writing coach at the Archer City Workshop. \nTickets*: PURCHASE HERE \n$10 – Members or $15 – General Admission  \nAbout George Getschow                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      George Getschow is a Pulitzer Prize finalist for National Reporting and winner of the Robert F. Kennedy Award for distinguished writing about the underprivileged. He has earned numerous other awards for his writing and was inducted into the Texas Institute of Letters in 2012 for “distinctive literary achievement.” Today\, as director of the Archer City Writers Workshop\, he helps organize and conduct annual writing workshops in Archer City for professional writers and college and high school students from across the country. \nAbout John Warley                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          John Warley is an award-winning author\, a dedicated dad\, and a retired lawyer\, having practiced both criminal law as a prosecutor and civil law as a litigator for over forty years. A South Carolinian by birth\, he grew up largely in Yorktown\, Virginia.  He is the award-winning author of five published novels and one non-fiction history of his undergraduate alma mater (Stand Forever\, Yielding Never; The Citadel in the 21st Century). Jury of One is his sixth novel. \nAbout Jonathan Haupt                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        Jonathan Haupt is the executive director of the Pat Conroy Literary Center and the founding director of the Pat Conroy Literary Festival. As the former director of the University of South Carolina Press\, Haupt created\, with the late Pat Conroy\, the Story River Books original fiction imprint\, named by Garden & Gun magazine as “one of the top ten things to love about the South.” He serves on the boards of the South Carolina Academy of Authors and the Friends of South Carolina Libraries. He has moderated panels and presented on topics of small press and university press publishing\, literary arts partnerships\, and the writing life of Pat Conroy at writers conferences\, library conferences\, book festivals\, libraries\, and schools. With novelist Nicole Seitz\, Haupt is coeditor of the anthology Our Prince of Scribes: Writers Remember Pat Conroy. \nAbout James Scott                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                A former Nieman Fellow at Harvard\, James M. Scott is the author of Rampage\, which was named one of the Best Books of 2018 by the editors at Amazon\, Kirkus\, and Military Times and was chosen as a finalist for the prestigious Gilder Lehrman Prize for Military History by the New York Historical Society. His other works include Target Tokyo\, a 2016 Pulitzer Prize finalist\, The War Below\, and The Attack on the Liberty\, which won the Rear Admiral Samuel Eliot Morison Award. Scott lives with his wife and two children in Mt. Pleasant\, SC.

DESCRIPTION:Join Charleston Library Society’s Director of Conservation James Davis and Conservation Intern Sam Barnheart for an introduction to the ancient art of decorative paper marbling: a method of aqueous surface design using ink and paint colors\, which can produce patterns similar to smooth marble or other kinds of stone. During this creative session\, you will explore the fascinating craft that transforms prepared papers with fluid patterns and vibrant colors. The workshop will introduce the history of paper marbling which dates back to the 10th century\, and provide insights into materials\, tools\, and techniques to create your own unique papers. Whether you’re a seasoned artist or a beginner\, this class offers something for everyone who wishes to experiment with creative paper techniques using various color combinations and designs.
