SUMMARY:275th Milestones Shaping the Peninsula
DESCRIPTION:As the second oldest membership library in the United States dating to 1748\, it is quite special to have recently celebrated 275 years of continuous operations\, and even more special to have the opportunity to highlight another this year. Founded in 1749\, KKBE (Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim — Holy Congregation House of God) is among the oldest Jewish Congregations in this country and its sanctuary is the oldest synagogue building in continual use in the USA.  The congregation is also celebrating the 200th anniversary of the birth of Reform Judaism in America\, launched by its members in 1824. In celebration of this monumental milestone\, join us to honor the legacy and impact of Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim on 275 years of history\, culture on the Peninsula for almost three centuries. \nAttendance is Free with RSVP\, Please register below. \nAbout KKBE \nFounded in 1749\, The KKBE or Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim\, is known as the birthplace of American Reform Judaism and holds a rich heritage in which all American Jews can take pride. Charleston was founded in 1670\, with the earliest known reference to a Jew in the English settlement dated 1695. Soon after many others followed\, attracted by the civil and religious liberty of South Carolina and the ample economic opportunity of the colony. The group had grown significantly by 1749 to organize the present congregation\, Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim\, followed fifteen years later with the establishment of the now historic Coming Street Cemetery\, the oldest surviving Jewish burial ground in the South. \nWhen George Washington became President of the United States of America\, there were six Jewish congregations in the new American Republic. Three were located in Northern cities: Newport\, Rhode Island’s Yeshuat Israel (Touro)\, New York’s Shearith Israel\, and Philadelphia’s Michveh Israel. Three were located in the South: Richmond\, Virginia’s Beth Shalome\, Savannah\, Georgia’s Mickve Israel\, and Charleston’s own Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim. At first\, prayers were recited in private quarters and\, from 1775\, in an improvised synagogue adjacent to the present-day grounds. In 1792\, construction of the largest and most impressive synagogue in the United States commenced\, and it was dedicated just two years later. A member of the visiting Lafayette’s entourage is reported to have described the building as “spacious and elegant.” This handsome\, cupolated Georgian synagogue was destroyed in the great Charleston fire of 1838 and replaced in 1840 by the structure in use today. The colonnaded building was dedicated in early 1841\, and is often described as one of the country’s finest examples of Greek Revival architecture. On this occasion\, KKBE’s Reverend Gustavus Poznanski was moved to say\, “This synagogue is our Temple\, this city our Jerusalem\, and this happy land our Palestine.

SUMMARY:CLS Wine Club // Burgundy
DESCRIPTION:After emerging from a lively conversation in our Fellows Lounge\, CLS Wine Club has been welcomed on repeat – this Fall marking 2 years since its first. During the Fall installment\, reds are the category\, this time Burgundy\, with insights from our founding aficionados\, Jerry Mitchell and Tim Cantopher\, to guide the selections and overall theme. Their learned preferences and curiosities from storied outings and clubs centered around the complexities of wine coupled with a our partner Monarch Wines\, allow just the right blend of lesser known vineyards\, small-production varietals with a bit of wit and wisdom as well. \nPlease Note: These wines are available in limited and time-sensitive quantities\, therefore\, we must secure them ahead of time.  For this reason\, your admission also includes one of each of the four bottles to take home. (Avg $35/bottle) For those who come as a couple\, there is an option for two people and four bottles. Seating is limited in order to host a conversation-style wine tasting where the experts will walk us through four specifically chosen bottles and dissect the nuance associated with each. Part of participating in the wine club is the opportunity to purchase wines that would otherwise not be available at retail. \nAbout Monarch and Justin Coleman \nYears of selecting wines for some of NYC’s favorite spots (Balthazar\, Commerce\, Morandi\, The Mark) have helped Justin (owner and propietor of Monarch Wines) cultivate strong relationships with both European and American winemakers\, importers\, and distributors. From lugging bottles to creating beverage programs\, to managing operations\, Justin has worked with some of the most exalted names in the business. Seeking a slower pace of life for his young family at the time (wife\, Sarah\, and eldest daughter\, Fia)\, Justin headed south to Charleston in 2013\, landing at The Ordinary as General Manager. At The Ordinary\, Justin fostered an appreciation for\, and understanding of\, the community in Charleston. Monarch Wine Merchants opened in 2017\, filling a void in the market at the time for a true neighborhood wine shop\, focused on wine and only wine. Delivering the highest level of customer service has become a hallmark of the shop. Justin is forever passionate about keeping the shelves well-stocked at the brick and mortar\, while also sourcing highly allocated wines for both local clients and those further afield. \nThere are two ticket options available: \n*Single $285 // $145 ticket price + $140 wine price (4 bottles to take home) \n*Couple $430 // $290 ticket price + $140 wine price (4 bottles to take home) \nFellows members will have first option for securing seats.

SUMMARY:CLS Book Club // "The Demon of Unrest" by Erik Larson
DESCRIPTION:CLS Book Club is FREE\, in-person\, and open to the public—and also member-researched and led through thoughtfully curated discussion. Whether you’ve finished the book\, are thinking about starting it\, or couldn’t make it past the halfway point\, please join us. \nRSVP is required via the form below so that we can plan for seating. \nPlease note that the authors of our selections ARE NOT in attendance.  \nAbout Book Club \nOffered a few times a year\, the CLS Book Club seeks to explore a wide range of topics\, authors and diversity within its book selections. Under this objective\, Book Club also offers space for conversation\, perspectives and discourse. For The Demon of Unrest\, Book Club’s resident Erik Larson completist\, the dynamic Mike Gottlieb\, will present a through exploration of the book after which the floor will open to questions and discussion. \nAbout the Book \n\n\n\n\n\nOn November 6\, 1860\, Abraham Lincoln became the fluky victor in a tight race for president. The country was bitterly at odds; Southern extremists were moving ever closer to destroying the Union\, with one state after another seceding and Lincoln powerless to stop them. Slavery fueled the conflict\, but somehow the passions of North and South came to focus on a lonely federal fortress in Charleston Harbor: Fort Sumter. Master storyteller Erik Larson offers a gripping account of the chaotic months between Lincoln’s election and the Confederacy’s shelling of Sumter—a period marked by tragic errors and miscommunications\, enflamed egos and craven ambitions\, personal tragedies and betrayals. Lincoln himself wrote that the trials of these five months were “so great that\, could I have anticipated them\, I would not have believed it possible to survive them.”At the heart of this suspense-filled narrative are Major Robert Anderson\, Sumter’s commander and a former slave owner sympathetic to the South but loyal to the Union; Edmund Ruffin\, a vain and bloodthirsty radical who stirs secessionist ardor at every opportunity; and Mary Boykin Chesnut\, wife of a prominent planter\, conflicted over both marriage and slavery and seeing parallels between them. In the middle of it all is the overwhelmed Lincoln\, battling with his duplicitous Secretary of State\, William Seward\, as he tries desperately to avert a war that he fears is inevitable—one that will eventually kill 750\,000 Americans. Drawing on diaries\, secret communiques\, slave ledgers\, and plantation records\, Larson gives us a political horror story that captures the forces that led America to the brink—a dark reminder that we often don’t see a cataclysm coming until it’s too late. \n\n\n\n\n\nFor a copy of the book\, check out our catalog here\, or shop local at Buxton Books.

SUMMARY:In the Kitchen with Evie McGee Colbert
DESCRIPTION:Following the initial debut at the Gaillard in Sept\, we are pleased to join the Ashley Hall Alumnae Association along with Buxton Books in hosting Evie McGee Colbert for an intimate local’s peek into the stories and makings of this extra special\, and debut\, cookbook. Complete with banter typically only heard at their dining room table\, Does This Taste Funny? includes more than 100 recipes – everything from “Stephen’s Kindergarten Soup” to “The Colbert Bump Cocktail\,” and all with an emphasis on the Colberts’ native Lowcountry cuisine. \nIf you are unable to attend the event\, but would like to purchase one or more signed copies\, please visit Buxton Books here. \nABOUT THE BOOK \n\n\n\n\n\nAs Evie and Stephen explain it\, Does This Taste Funny? had its beginnings in the Covid lockdown. “We were all stuck together and couldn’t go out\, so we cooked. We had all three kids back under one roof for the first time in a long time\, and we had dinner each night as a family. Cooking together became a major source of entertainment.” \nNow\, the Colberts invite us into their kitchen and around their dining room table. Sharing Stephen and Evie’s favorite recipes\, as well as those of their family and friends\, this book offers everything from Party Food (called “party food” because “appetizers” implies something to follow when we all know that\, often\, this is the only course)\, to Seafood\, to Poultry and Meat (“Evie and I have different relationships to meat. I like it. Evie can take it or leave it\, and mostly she leaves it.”)\, to Desserts (“This is one of the largest sections of the book. Evie always reminds me that desserts are a great way to postpone clearing up.”)\, to Drinks (“I love cocktail hour. It feels like a reward for having gone so long without a cocktail”)\, all tied together with playful dialogue between Stephen and Evie and gorgeous shots of their food\, family\, and home. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nEvie McGee grew up in Charleston along with husband Stephen Colbert\, but somehow the two didn’t meet until their mid-twenties. McGee Colbert is a graduate of the University of Virginia and the Circle in the Square Theater School. While beginning her career as an actor\, she eventually transitioned to the other side of the footlights and worked for many years in nonprofit theater. Among her various positions\, she was the the director of development for both the Drama League of New York and the Remains Theater of Chicago. She is a founding board member of Montclair Film\, and currently serves as the President of its Board of Directors. In April of 2020\, she was appointed to NJ Governor Phil Murphy’s Restart and Recovery Commission and continues to serve as an arts advocate in that capacity. She has also recently joined the board of the International African American Museum. She and Stephen are the founders of Spartina Industries\, where she serves as Vice President of Spartina Productions and operates with a first-look deal from CBS Studios. Spartina projects include Derek DelGaudio’s In & Of Itself on Hulu\, After Midnight with Taylor Tomlinson and an upcoming series adaptation of The Chronicles of Amber by Roger Zelazny. She lives in New Jersey with her husband and three children.
