SUMMARY:'Obstinate Daughters' Debut
DESCRIPTION:From the New York Times bestselling author of The Girls of Atomic City and The Last Castle comes a sweeping chronicle challenging the traditional mythology of the nation’s beginnings and championing the unsung women behind the American Revolution.  While history has traditionally celebrated the “Founding Fathers\,“ it often omits the women who kept the colonies running and liberty alive. Appropriately timed for this year’s 250th\, Denise Kiernan’s Obstinate Daughters rewrites the story through the courageous\, resourceful women from the battlefields to the printing press who fought\, spied\, published\, preached\, farmed\, and organized – unsung heroines who turned the tide.  Kiernan will be joined in conversation by fellow NYT Bestselling Author Wiley Cash. \nPurchase Tickets HERE! \nPlease note\, we’ve updated our ticketing system—purchases now go through Neon Events for a smoother registration experience. For any issues\, please call our Front Desk at 843-723-9912. \nIf you are unable to attend the event\, but would like to purchase one or more copies\, please visit Buxton Books here. \n\n\nAbout the Book \nHistory has always celebrated the “Founding Fathers“—the sly but victorious tactics of Washington\, the daring exploits of Lafayette\, the grand ideas of Jefferson. Yet we rarely hear of the women who kept the colonies running and liberty alive. Obstinate Daughters finally rewrites the story of America’s birth by revealing the courageous\, resourceful women whose actions shaped a nation. From the battlefields to the printing press\, from the plantations to the pulpit\, these women fought\, spied\, published\, preached\, farmed\, and organized. From the front lines to the home front\, from the colonies to the frontier\, these unsung heroines turned the tide. \nIn Obstinate Daughters\, readers will meet women who armed themselves and took matters into their own hands to defend their town. A Cherokee leader who warned patriot settlements of looming attacks\, risking the lives of her own people in the process. A British spy at the center of a plot to assassinate George Washington. Enslaved women who risked their lives while fighting a parallel battle for their own freedom\, embodying the very ideals the revolution claimed to uphold. The only woman to have her name on the Declaration of Independence. And many more. As she has done so many times before\, Kiernan masterfully weaves these individual stories together into a single\, compelling narrative and carves a place in history for these impactful females. With journalistic rigor and narrative flair\, Kiernan reminds us that the past is always open to challenge and that every untold story can inspire a new generation. \nAbout the Author \n\n\nDenise Kiernan is an author\, journalist\, and producer who has worked as a writer for more than 20 years. Her last two books—The Last Castle and The Girls of Atomic City—were both instant New York Times bestsellers in both hardcover and paperback. The Last Castle was a Wall Street Journal bestseller\, a finalist for the 2018 Thomas Wolfe Memorial Literary Award\, and a finalist for the Southern Book Prize. The Girls of Atomic City was aLos Angeles Times and NPR bestseller\, named one of Amazon’s “Top 100 Best Books of 2013\,” and has been published in multiple languages. Kiernan has been a featured guest on many radio and television shows\, including NPR’s “Weekend Edition\,” PBS NewsHour\, MSNBC’s Morning Joe\, and The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. \nAbout Wiley Cash \nWiley Cash is the New York Times bestselling author of four novels from William Morrow/HarperCollins. He’s been a fellow at Yaddo and the MacDowell Colony\, and he teaches fiction writing and literature at the University of North Carolina-Asheville\, where he serves as the Executive Director of the Literary Arts. He lives in North Carolina with his wife\, photographer Mallory Cash\, and their daughters. \nPublished in September 2021\, Cash’s novel When Ghosts Come Home was a national bestseller and an Indie Next Pick. In 2017\, Cash’s novel The Last Ballad was an American Library Association Book of the Year and a Chicago Public Library Best Book of 2017. The novel received the Southern Book Prize\, the Sir Walter Raleigh Award for Fiction\, the Weatherford Award\, and the Bloodroot Mountain Prize. His second novel\, This Dark Road to Mercy\, was a national bestseller and received the Crime Writers Association’s Novel of the Year in the United Kingdom. SUMMARY:Empire of Ashes // James Scott's Latest
DESCRIPTION:Look forward to the return of Pulitzer Prize finalist\, New York Times bestseller\, and Scholar in Residence at the Citadel\, James Scott\, for the pub-week launch of his new release\, Empire of Ashes\, joined on stage by Brian Jones\, Dean of the Citadel. As an acclaimed Pacific War Historian for a number of books\, including Black Snow\, Rampage\, and The War Below\, as well as Targeted: Beirut\, which he co-authored with Jack Carr\, his perspective on the harrowing story of America’s bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in the struggle to end World War II is highly anticipated. \nPurchase Tickets HERE! \nPlease note\, we’ve updated our ticketing system—purchases now go through Neon Events for a smoother registration experience. For any issues\, please call our Front Desk at 843-723-9912. \nIf you are unable to attend the event\, but would like to purchase one or more signed copies\, please visit Buxton Books here. \nPrior to the program\, we invite our Fellows Members to enjoy Happy Hour from 5:00 – 6:00 pm\, downstairs in the Dr. Suzan D. Boyd Fellows Club Lounge.  \nAbout the Book \nOver three days in August 1945\, a nation once morally opposed to the bombing of civilians killed 120\,000 men\, women\, and children; doomed tens of thousands more to agonizing death in the weeks and months ahead; and annihilated two cities: Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Empire of Ashes explores the final brutal months of the war in the Pacific\, featuring the voices of never-before-heard victims of the atomic bombs. Through interviews with survivors and accounts gleaned from Japanese sources\, New York Times best-selling author James M. Scott combines the attacks’ heart-wrenching details with their causes and consequences\, from debates within the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos\, Oakridge\, and Hanford to the fallout that would alter decades of life in Japan. From “an exceptional writer with a keen eye for dazzling detail and gripping\, suspenseful storytelling” (Henry Richard Maar III\, Journal of Military History)\, Empire of Ashes illuminates the moral dilemma at the center of America’s decision to inflict total war upon Japan with startling immediacy. \nAbout James M. Scott \nA Pulitzer Prize finalist and former Nieman Fellow at Harvard\, James M. Scott is the author of Target Tokyo\, Black Snow\, Rampage\, The War Below\, and The Attack on the Liberty. In addition\, Scott is a sought-after public speaker who leads battlefield tours and lectures at institutions around the world. He lives with his wife and two children in Charleston\, South Carolina\, where he is the Scholar in Residence at The Citadel. His journey to the Lowcountry followed a distinguished twelve-year tenure at Johnson C. Smith University\, where he served as Dean of the College of Arts and Letters and earned the prestigious title of James B. Duke Distinguished faculty member. \nBrian’s expertise in the American presidency and the nuclear age is grounded in a PhD from Kansas State University\, an MA from UNC Greensboro\, and a cum laude BA from Appalachian State University. SUMMARY:South Carolina 250 // A Celebration for the Ages
DESCRIPTION:Two hundred and fifty years in the making — it remains hard to believe that the earliest members of the Library Society were here to witness this grand accomplishment. We are heading into the pinnacle month for SC250 Charleston and the signature events that their team has been hard at work planning for the better part of the last three years. As one of the early partners for SC250 and SC250 Charleston\, we are proud to have been part of a number of key programs over the last twelve months that kicked off with Carolina Day just a year ago. To honor this momentous anniversary\, there will be an assortment of engagements around town\, beginning in June and continuing through the actual anniversary on July 4th.  \nFor more information and event dates\, visit the SC250 website HERE.
