SUMMARY:Deep Mapping // Charleston's New History
DESCRIPTION:While not a term currently familiar to most\, deep mapping is a rapidly growing field\, and one of the most unique ways to engage a community in creating detailed\, public-facing digital maps that integrate spatial\, historical\, cultural\, and environmental data to tell the full and broader story of a place and its people. Over the last year and a half\, a small group from Charleston has initiated this process for the Lowcountry\, working closely with Don Lafreniere\, Director of the Community Deep Mapping Institute at Michigan Technological University\, and James Newhard\, Director of the Center for Historical Landscapes. Join Don and James\, along with Doug Rivet\, Assistant Professor of Political Science at the College of Charleston\, and CLS Director of Development Jen Comer for a riveting discussion about what has already been completed\, the insights gleaned\, and what we’ll see in the next phase of the project. \nPurchase Tickets HERE! \nAbout Don Lafreniere \nDr. Don Lafreniere is Professor of Geography & GIS\, Director of the Center for Geospatial Research and Technology\, and Director of the Community Deep Mapping Institute at Michigan Technological University. He has led dozens of projects and published extensively on topics such GIS approaches to historic preservation\, community resiliency\, housing\, and children’s health. He is an expert in GIS-based spatial data infrastructures to support economic development\, heritage tourism\, and preservation in post-industrial communities.  \nAbout James Newhard \nJames Newhard is Director of the Center for Historical Landscapes at the College of Charleston\, where he co-directs the Spatial History of Charleston. A Registered Professional Archaeologist\, his research focuses on landscape archaeology\, archaeoinformatics\, geospatial analysis\, and the long-term histories of human-environmental systems. His work has included field and digital humanities projects in Greece\, Turkey\, Albania\, the Ohio Valley\, and the Carolina Lowcountry. At Charleston\, he additionally has led projects involving historical GIS\, spatial databases\, and community-engaged approaches to documenting layered cultural landscapes. His current work with SHOC brings together deep mapping\, public history\, and community-centered approaches to improve access to Charleston’s dispersed historical records and to support descendant communities\, preservation advocacy\, and more equitable understandings of place. \nAbout Doug Rivet \nDouglas Rivet is Assistant Professor of Political Science and Director of the Urban and Regional Planner Certificate Program at the College of Charleston. As a geographer\, his work is grounded in urban geography\, city planning\, and geospatial analysis. His research examines the relationships among urban environments\, transportation systems\, development\, and rehabilitation\, with particular focus on how built\, social\, and natural systems shape urban spaces over time. Drawing on experience in local government\, GIS\, property assessment\, and policy\, he brings applied urban expertise to historical and community-based spatial research. His work with the Spatial History of Charleston integrates historical cartography\, GIS\, deep mapping\, and public-facing geospatial approaches to support interdisciplinary scholarship\, planning\, and public engagement. \nAbout Jennifer Comer \nJennifer Comer\, the Director of Development & Membership at the Charleston Library Society\, will moderate the panel. Comer has ten years of experience in grant administration\, having worked for the Morgan Library & Museum and Bloomberg Philanthropies\, both based in New York City.

SUMMARY:The Art of Civility with Daryl Davis
DESCRIPTION:Co-founder of the ProHuman Foundation\, Daryl Davis\, is an American R&B and blues musician recognized for being one of the greatest Blues\, Boogie Woogie & Rock ’n’ Roll pianists of all time. However\, he may be more widely renowned for his success in confronting racism through friendships founded by dialogue and discourse with long-standing members of the Ku Klux Klan. We are honored to welcome Daryl\, along with Dr. Michael Lee\, founder of the Civility Initiative and Professor of Communications at the College of Charleston\, for a timely discussion on civil discourse and the importance of the debate in our modern culture. \nPurchase Tickets HERE! \nPrior to the program\, we invite our Fellows Members to enjoy Happy Hour from 5:00 – 6:00 pm\, downstairs in the Dr. Suzan D. Boyd Fellows Club Lounge.  \nAbout Daryl Davis \nDaryl Davis is best known for his talent as a musician; he is an international recording artist and is recognized for being one of the greatest Blues\, Boogie Woogie & Rock ’n’ Roll pianists of all time. In addition to his music career\, Daryl is the author of Klan-Destine Relationships\, which was the first book written about the Ku Klux Klan by a Black author. His engagement with the KKK started when\, while playing in an all-White band\, a member of the Klan praised him for his musical style. Daryl recognized that he had an opportunity to ask an important question about racism: “How can you hate me when you don’t even know me?” Daryl has interviewed hundreds of KKK members and other White supremacists and influenced many of them to renounce their racist ideology. His work in race relations has been highlighted in speaker series across the country. His documentary film\, Accidental Courtesy\, illustrates his process of conversation and understanding to bridge differences and promote racial reconciliation in true Prohuman form. \nAbout Mike Lee \nMichael J. Lee is the director of the Civility Initiative and a professor of communication at the College of Charleston. The Civility Initiative promotes healthy disagreement and dialogue across differences through workshops\, trainings\, speakers\, debates\, and When We Disagree\, a podcast about memorable disagreements in our lives. His research focuses on political identity in American politics. His work has earned over a dozen awards\, including five national book awards for his first book\, Creating Conservatism: Postwar Words that Made an American Movement. His latest book is We Are Not One People: Separatism and Secession in American Politics Since 1776.  \nAbout the Civility Initiative \n\n\nThe Civility Initiative at the College of Charleston was created to foster real change and promote dialogue across differences. This is accomplished by hosting speakers\, convening panels\, and sponsoring workshops about communal engagement and healthy disagreement. The Initiative highlights the value of mutual respect when sharing opposing ideas and how conversations can help to bridge political divides. We work in two areas. Fight\, which includes polarization\, bigotry\, violence\, rage\, cancellation and Flight\, which includes withdrawal\, isolation\, silence\, loneliness\, and echo chambers. The initiative highlights the value of mutual respect when sharing opposing ideas and how conversations can help to bridge political divides. \nAbout the Prohuman Foundation \nFounded by Daryl Davis\, Letitia Kim and Bion Bartning\, The Prohuman Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that exists to promote the foundational truth that every person is a unique individual united by our shared humanity. America was built on the promise that all of us were created equal. There are times when we have fallen short\, but together we have made immense progress. And yet\, in this age of unprecedented advancement\, it can feel like we are heading in the wrong direction. The defining question of our time is: How do we break through the demonization and division\, and find the courage to move forward together? The Prohuman Foundation believes that embracing our foundational truth is what will allow us to continue to advance.

SUMMARY:Model T to Tesla // 'The Driving Machine by Witold Rybczynksi'
DESCRIPTION:Explore the vast and engaging history of the invention that made an industry boom like no other — the automobile. Having explored many topics\, the latest by architect\, emeritus professor\, and celebrated author Witold Rybczynski journeys through time from Carl Benz’s three-wheel contraption in 1855 to the Golden Age of American car design\, car culture\, and the present-day shift to electric. This is the story of our most distinctive cars and the people who created them\, along with key developments in automobile technology\, the arrival of postwar subcompacts and the long evolution of the SUV (think woodie\, Army jeep and Range Rover.) \nPurchase Tickets HERE! \nIf you are unable to attend the event\, but would like to purchase one or more copies\, please visit Buxton Books here. \n\n\nAbout the Book \nIn this lively and entertaining work\, Witold Rybczynski—hailed as “one of the best writers on design working today” by Publishers Weekly—tells the story of the most distinctive cars in history and the artists\, engineers\, dreamers\, and gearheads who created them. Delving into more than 170 years of ingenuity in design\, technology\, and engineering\, he takes us from Carl Benz’s three-wheel motorcar in 1855 to the present-day shift to electric cars. Along the way\, he looks at the emergence of mass production with Henry Ford’s Model T; the Golden Age of American car design and the rise of car culture; postwar European subcompacts typified by the Mini Cooper; and the long tradition of the streamlined and elegant sports car. Rybczynski explores how cars have reflected national character (the charming Italian Fiat Cinquecento)\, served as icons of a subculture (the VW bus for American hippies)\, and even emulated an era (the practical Chrysler minivan). He explains key developments in automotive technology\, including the electric starter\, rack-and-pinion steering\, and disc brakes\, highlighting how the modern automobile is the result of more than a century of trial and error. And he weaves in charming accounts of the many cars he’s owned and driven\, starting with his first—the iconic Volkswagen Beetle. The Driving Machine is a breezy and fascinating history of design\, illustrated with the author’s delightful drawings. \nAbout the Author \n\n\nWitold Rybczynski\, of Polish parentage\, was born in Edinburgh\, raised in London\, and attended Jesuit schools in England and Canada. He studied architecture at McGill University in Montreal\, where he also taught; he is currently emeritus professor of urbanism at the University of Pennsylvania. His architectural experience has included designing houses as a registered architect\, as well as researching low-cost housing for which he received a 1991 Progressive Architecture award. In 1993\, he was made an Honorary Fellow of the American Institute of Architects\, and he has received honorary doctorates from McGill University and the University of Western Ontario. In 2007\, he received the Vincent Scully Prize\, the Seaside Prize\, and the Institute Collaborative Honors from the AIA. He served on the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts from 2004 to 2012. Library Journal described Rybczynski as “one of our most original\, accessible\, and stimulating writers on architecture.” He has written twenty-two books on subjects as varied as the evolution of comfort\, a history of the weekend\, American urbanism\, the development of a new community\, and a search for the origins of the screwdriver. Home has been translated into ten languages\, and was nominated for a Governor General’s Literary Prize\, while A Clearing in the Distance\, a biography of Frederick Law Olmsted\, received the J. Anthony Lukas Prize\, a Christopher Award\, a Philadelphia Athenæum literary award\, and was shortlisted for the Charles Taylor Prize for Literary Nonfiction. His essays have appeared regularly in Architect and The New York Times\, and he has written for The Atlantic\, The New Yorker\, and The New York Review of Books. In 2014\, he was a finalist for a National Magazine Award. He has been an architecture critic for Saturday Night\, Wigwag\, and Slate. In 2014\, Rybczynski received the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award for Design Mind\, and in 2023\, he received an Arthur Ross Award for Publishing. His latest book is The Driving Machine\, a design history of the car. Witold Rybczynski lives in Philadelphia.

SUMMARY:Democracy Then and Now: Jill Lepore
DESCRIPTION:From the 2026 Pulitzer Prize winner of We the People comes an urgent account of how rule by machine has ravaged the world in The Rise and Fall of the Artificial State. Jill Lepore is an international best-selling author\, American historian\, and journalist currently serving as the David Woods Kemper ’41 Professor of American History and Professor of Law at Harvard University\, in addition to her contributions as a staff writer for The New Yorker since 2005. As a wide-ranging and prolific essayist\, Lepore writes about American history\, law\, literature\, and politics\, with much of her scholarship exploring absences and asymmetries in the historical record\, with particular emphasis on the history and technology of evidence. In a year with great emphasis on our 250th\, Lepore visits Charleston as part of a limited number of appearances to share this new book and an intimate understanding of the fascinating origins of modern civilization\, and the creep of automated democracy in the name of progress that has seen its apotheosis in AI. In conversation with Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Mother Emanuel and journalist Kevin Sack\, Lepore examines our future through the lens of our past. \nPurchase Tickets HERE! \nP1: 293 (book bundled) @$65 \nP2: 620 (book bundled) @$55 \nP3: 100 (no book) @$45 \nSTUDENT & TEACHERS: 60 @$15  (located in P3/rear orchestra \nIf you are unable to attend the event\, but would like to purchase one or more signed copies of the speakers’ books\, please visit Buxton Books here. \n\n\n\nAbout the Author \nJill Lepore is the David Woods Kemper ’41 Professor of American History at Harvard University and Professor of Law at Harvard Law School. She is also a staff writer at The New Yorker. Her books include We the People: A History of the U.S. Constitution\, which won the 2026 Pulitzer Prize for history and was long-listed for the 2026 Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Nonfiction; The Name of War\, which won a Bancroft Prize; New York Burning\, which was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for history; Book of Ages\, a finalist for the National Book Award; The Secret History of Wonder Woman; the international best-seller These Truths: A History of the United States; and The Deadline\, which received a PEN America award for the art of the essay. She is the host of the podcast “The Last Archive” and of the BBC Radio 4 program “X-Man: The Elon Musk Origin Story.” \n“The Artificial State is the factory farming of humans\, the sorting and segmenting\, the isolation and alienation\, the destruction of both human community and the capacity for self-government\, the replacement of rule of\, by\, and for the people with the rule of machines owned by corporations. Within the Artificial State\, humans become to machines what animals have been to humans.” —Jill Lepore \n\nAbout the Moderator \nKevin Sack is a veteran journalist who has written broadly about national affairs for more than four decades and has shared in three Pulitzer Prizes. He is the author of Mother Emanuel: Two Centuries of Race\, Resistance\, and Forgiveness in One Charleston Church\, which explores the 200-year history of Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston\, SC\, before and after the 2015 massacre of nine parishioners by a young white supremacist. The book was honored as one of three finalists for the 2026 Pulitzer Prize for general nonfiction.  A native of Jacksonville\, Florida\, and a graduate of Duke University\, he spent thirty years on the staff of The New York Times\, where he specialized in writing long-form narrative and investigative reports\, often related to race. He also has written for the Los Angeles Times and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution\, and his work has appeared in The New York Times Magazine. He was a 2019 Emerson Collective Fellow at New America.

For August\, Book Club’s own Clare Meyer and Susan Porter will revisit a 2012 bestseller\, The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry by Rachel Joyce – reminding us that books\, like friends\, are always worth a long and repeat visit. \nAbout the Book \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMeet Harold Fry\, recently retired. He lives in a small English village with his wife\, Maureen\, who seems irritated by almost everything he does. Little differentiates one day from the next. Then one morning\, a letter arrives\, addressed to Harold in a shaky scrawl\, from a woman he hasn’t heard from in twenty years. Queenie Hennessy is in hospice and is writing to say goodbye. But before Harold mails off a quick reply\, a chance encounter convinces him that he absolutely must deliver his message to Queenie in person. In his yachting shoes and light coat\, Harold Fry embarks on an urgent quest. Determined to walk six hundred miles to the hospice\, Harold believes that as long as he walks\, Queenie will live. A novel of charm\, humor\, and profound insight into the thoughts and feelings we all bury deep within our hearts\, The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry introduces Rachel Joyce as a wise—and utterly irresistible—storyteller.
