Through the Lens of a Dancer brings Caras’s talent to a new medium and\, through it\, tells the story of his life – taking readers through the complex and all-consuming world of ballet and\, for the first time\, relaying all the personal moments within. This limited—print\, hardcover edition is signed and placed in a gorgeous slipcase that features the author’s treasured photography. \nAbout the Author \nSteven Caras was born and raised in Northern New Jersey\, where he began studying ballet at the age of fifteen. Three years later\, he was invited to join the New York City Ballet by its founder\, the legendary George Balanchine. Over the next fourteen years\, Caras fought hard to measure up under the vigilant scrutiny of “Mr. B\,” dancing worldwide in numerous masterworks choreographed by Balanchine and Jerome Robbins. Noting Caras’s reverence for his gifted colleagues along with an inseparable bond with his used Olympus camera\, Balanchine granted him full access to document all aspects of company activity—a world few were privy to. His mentor’s unwavering encouragement planted the seed that would grow into a luminous second career for Caras as one of the most respected image makers of dance in our time. Her work has appeared in The New York Times\, Chicago Tribune\, Gourmet\, Garden & Gun\, and many Charleston publications\, among them The Post and Courier\, where she was arts critic and columnist. She has won numerous awards\, among them South Carolina Press Association’s recognition twice for Best Column\, and twice for Review Portfolio; the national Alternative Newsmedia first place for her review portfolio on behalf of Charleston City Paper. \nRaised in Charleston\, she earned a B.A. in English from the College of Charleston and an M. Phil in creative writing from Trinity College Dublin.

DESCRIPTION:In exploring the integrated relationship between culture and democracy\, we are honored to welcome special guest Lamar Alexander to join Michael Reynolds for this season’s Bond Street REIT Series. As a long-serving U.S. Senator\, Lamar leaves a legacy spanning politics\, education leadership\, and public service that has shaped both education policy\, public spaces\, and community programs. As the 5th U.S. Secretary of Education\, he championed the “America 2000” initiative and later advanced federal legislation for the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) of 2015 and the 2018 Education Next+1\, which expanded accountability to improve student outcomes. Lamar Alexander’s career in education leadership —through federal\, state\, and legislative roles—has had a lasting impact on American schools and public institutions\, through infrastructure investment and public service priorities. \nPurchase Tickets HERE! \nAbout Lamar Alexander \nLamar Alexander has long been known as one of America’s most principled and effective statesmen. As US Senator\, Alexander shepherded major laws that today govern K–12 education\, medical innovation\, and maintenance of our national parks. Former Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said\, “For eighteen years\, there was Lamar Alexander\, and there was the rest of us. He was hands-down one of the most brilliant\, most thoughtful\, and most effective legislators any of us have ever seen.” As governor\, Alexander brought the auto industry to Tennessee and made it the first state to pay teachers more for teaching well. He was chairman of the Senate Republican Conference\, the nation’s governors\, and of President Reagan’s “Commission on Americans Outdoors.” He served as US Education Secretary and as a university president. \nAlexander was also known for campaigning in a plaid shirt and performing on the piano with twenty-seven symphonies and on the Grand Ol’ Opry. He graduated from Vanderbilt University and New York University Law School. He and his late wife Honey were married for fifty-four years\, had four children and nine grandchildren. His parents were teachers. A seventh generation Tennessean\, Alexander lives in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains near Maryville where he grew up. \nAbout the Bond Street REIT Speaker Series \nOrchestrated by Founder and Chief Executive Officer\, Michael D. Reynolds\, who passionately served as a member of the Board of Trustees and also Treasurer of the Charleston Library Society\, the Bond Street REIT Speaker Series strives to honor the institution’s cultural enrichment\, intellectual exploration\, and literary legacy through a series of lively discussions and thought-provoking lectures. Bond Street is dedicated to preserving the Charleston Library Society’s renowned collection and historical significance\, as an immensely valuable repository of history in the South. Bond Street Real Estate Investment Trust\, headquartered in Charleston\, is a private real estate investment trust uniquely invested in convenience retail centers across ten states in the Southeast. \nIn 1831\, Alexis de Tocqueville toured America and visited Charleston in search of the special ingredient that made America’s democracy so powerful. What he discovered was that the glue that created community and civic discourse was its profoundly thriving cultural institutions. Libraries\, theaters\, museums\, and other cultural spaces served as the foundation for civic engagement and public dialogue. This insight is as relevant today as it was then\, and the Library Society remains vibrant because of this very truth.

DESCRIPTION:Along the SC coast\, a series of near-shore and wild islands provides key habitat for nesting and migratory birds\, but overdevelopment\, habitat loss\, and sea-level rise threaten them. We look forward to hosting the debut of the short film Wind Birds\, along with Black Rail’s Tale. A powerful duo focused on culture and conservation\, the two films act as an influential way to approach conservation outside the typical box. Following the screenings\, a panel discussion will explore the beauty of shorebirds\, the tradition of their study from great naturalists of history to today\, and their status as we look to the future. Drew Lanham \nJ. Drew Lanham is a cultural ornithologist\, naturalist\, educator\, and writer using robust science\, artful essays\, and evocative oratory to color the conservation conversation. Guided by principles of interconnectedness and interdependence\, Dr. Lanham’s work centers on the growing issues within environmental justice as observed through the multifaceted perspective of a Black Southern man. As a storyteller\, poet\, and passionate advocate for accessibility and stewardship\, his writing is in praise of wandering and wildness and in protest against all not justice or joy. Lanham is a Distinguished Professor of Wildlife Ecology and Master Teacher at Clemson University. He has received a MacArthur “Genius” Grant (2022) as well as the Dan W. Lufkin Conservation Award from the National Audubon Society (2019)\, the Rosa Parks and Grace Lee Boggs Outstanding Service Award from the North American Association for Environmental Education (2016)\, and the E. O. Wilson Award for Outstanding Science in Biodiversity Conservation from the Center for Biological Diversity (2020) and the Thoreau Award in 2024. He served as the Poet Laureate of Edgefield\, South Carolina (2022). Lanham and his family live on a farm in the Upstate of South Carolina. \nAbout Dana Beach \nDana Beach founded the South Carolina Coastal Conservation in 1989. Since that time\, the organization has grown from 2 staff members and an annual budget of $90\,000 to 35 staff members\, with offices in Beaufort\, Charleston\, Georgetown\, and Columbia\, supported by an annual budget of $3.5 million. The Conservation League is recognized as one of the most successful state-level conservation groups in the country\, particularly for its work in the field of land use reform. The Conservation League works with citizens and government to develop policies that promote sustainable patterns of development for people and the environment. In 2001\, the Conservation League launched GrowFood Carolina\, the state’s first local food hub. Beach graduated magna cum laude from Davidson College with a degree in mathematics. He earned an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Beach is married to Virginia Randolph Christian of Richmond\, VA. They have two children\, Nellie and Francis Beach. \nAbout Chris Crolley \nYou can spot Capt. Chris Crolley by his yellow hat—its leather band always adorned with feathers found by his daughters and a pewter sea turtle pin front and center. It’s a subtle emblem of what drives him: a deep commitment to conservation and the wild places of the Lowcountry. Along with being the mayor of the town of Awendaw\, as owner and CEO of Coastal Expeditions\, Chris has spent more than 30 years guiding others into the natural world. He’s a licensed captain\, accomplished naturalist\, and a passionate advocate for environmental education. From blackwater rivers to barrier islands\, he’s led trips up and down the Eastern Seaboard—but always returns to the salt marshes and creeks of South Carolina. In 2018\, Chris launched the Coastal Expeditions Foundation to take action for the places he loves. Since then\, the foundation has helped rebuild Crab Bank Seabird Sanctuary\, funds the Sea Turtle Nest Protection Program in Cape Romain\, and leads resilience-based outdoor programs for veterans. Under his leadership\, thousands of students each year explore coastal ecosystems through STEM-based field trips. With five outposts from Awendaw to Beaufort and partnerships with state and federal agencies\, Coastal Expeditions continues to grow under Chris’s direction—earning praise from Garden & Gun\, who named him a “Champion of Conservation” in 2022. \nAbout Joel Caldwell \nJoel Caldwell is a photographer\, writer\, filmmaker\, and co-founder of The M.A.R.S.H. Project. For the past ten years\, he has focused on telling conservation and environmental justice stories from around the world. An avid writer\, Kreston is a frequent columnist for the music news site Slipped Disc. There are clubs for every interest\, profession\, and background: from actors\, aristocrats\, architects\, artists\, and clergymen; to sailors\, soldiers\, journalists\, fishermen\, and spies. Historian and author Andrew Jones will illustrate some of the most beautiful and unusual of these clubs spanning 300 years of architecture and design —from the oldest clubs in London to the newest. He will highlight the clubs’ original interiors and exquisite furnishings as well as showcase the extraordinary collections they hold. The course will delve into all aspects of the eight-year struggle\, covering everything from general British and American strategies for rebellion and patriot and loyalist conflict to tensions between the Lowcountry and the backcountry\, important people\, and\, of course\, details on all of the key battles. His research into the Battle of Sullivan’s Island led to the publication of his findings and the creation of Thomson Park at Breach Inlet. A fellow of the Southern Campaigns of the American Revolution\, he served on the board of the South Carolina Historical Society and chaired the Fort Sumter – Fort Moultrie Historical Trust. He was a founding trustee of the South Carolina American Revolution Trust and co-founder of SC250 Charleston. MacIntyre earned a B.S. degree from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and served five years in the U.S. Army. He earned a M.S. degree in Business Administration with honors from Boston University and completed advanced management programs at Harvard and Stanford. His business career spanned the spectrum from startups to the Fortune 500 before he retired to Charleston in 2004. As president and CEO\, he led technology companies through formation\, global expansion\, public offerings\, mergers\, and acquisitions. He served on industry and civic boards and was president of the American Software Association.
