SUMMARY:Bond Street REIT Speaker Series // Deepak Srivastava
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the first of this year’s Bond Street Series\, focused on the importance of cultural institutions in fostering creative conversation and enhancing opportunities for democratic engagement. Founder of Bond Street REIT\, Michael Reynolds\, will host a rare conversation with Special Guest Deepak Srivastava\, President of Gladstone Institutes in California\, and one of the nation’s leading physicians in the science and technology of stem cell research and opportunities to combat congenital heart disease. \nAbout Deepak Srivastava \nDeepak Srivastava\, MD\, is President of Gladstone Institutes\, a nonprofit biomedical research institute that uses visionary science and technology to overcome disease. He is also a senior investigator and director of the Roddenberry Stem Cell Center at Gladstone. In addition\, he is a professor in the Departments of Pediatrics and Biochemistry and Biophysics\, and the Wilma and Adeline Pirag Distinguished Professor in pediatric developmental cardiology at UC San Francisco (UCSF). Srivastava received his MD from the University of Texas\, then trained in pediatrics at UCSF and in pediatric cardiology at the Children’s Hospital of Harvard Medical School. Before joining Gladstone in 2005\, Srivastava was a professor of pediatrics and molecular biology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. He became Gladstone’s president in 2018\, and has since been steering the organization toward a new era of convergence between technology and biomedical research. In his lab\, Srivastava investigates the genes responsible for normal heart formation and congenital heart disease\, and harnesses this knowledge to engineer cells that can repair heart damage. Srivastava is a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation\, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences\, the American Association for the Advancement of Science\, and the National Academy of Medicine. He served as president of the International Society for Stem Cell Research in 2019–2020. In addition\, Srivastava has co-founded two biotechnology companies\, iPierian Inc. and Tenaya Therapeutics\, where he continues to sit on the board of directors and on the scientific advisory board. Srivastava was recently recognized in the San Francisco Business Times’ Power 100 list for his leadership in business and research in the Bay Area. \nAbout the Bond Street REIT Speaker Series \nOrchestrated by Founder and Chief Executive Officer\, Michael D. Reynolds\, who passionately served as a member of the Board of Trustees and also Treasurer of the Charleston Library Society\, the Bond Street REIT Speaker Series strives to honor the institution’s cultural enrichment\, intellectual exploration\, and literary legacy through a series of lively discussions and thought-provoking lectures. Bond Street is dedicated to preserving the Charleston Library Society’s renowned collection and historical significance\, as an immensely valuable repository of history in the South. Bond Street Real Estate Investment Trust\, headquartered in Charleston\, is a private real estate investment trust uniquely invested in convenience retail centers across ten states in the Southeast. \nIn 1831\, Alexis de Tocqueville toured America and visited Charleston in search of the special ingredient that made America’s democracy so powerful. What he discovered was that the glue that created community and civic discourse was its profoundly thriving cultural institutions. Libraries\, theaters\, museums\, and other cultural spaces served as the foundation for civic engagement and public dialogue. This insight is as relevant today as it was then\, and the Library Society remains vibrant because of this very truth.

SUMMARY:When Generals Decide // MacArthur and Wainwright
DESCRIPTION:From the shores of the Philippines at the start of World War II came two men who knew only one thing – leave no man behind\, regardless of the cost. Douglas MacArthur and Jonathan Mayhew Wainwright star in The Fate of the Generals\, author and historian Jonathan Horn’s latest book of bravery and unwavering strength that is destined to become a classic of World War II history. Join Jonathan for a personal look at this story of war made uniquely personal\, through the meticulous research into diaries and letters\, including boxes of previously unexplored papers – a vivid account that raises timely questions about how we define honor and how we choose our heroes. \nIf you are unable to attend the event\, but would like to purchase one or more copies\, please visit Buxton Books. \nAbout the Book \nIn the tradition of Hampton Sides’s bestseller Ghost Soldiers comes a World War II story of bravery\, survival\, and sacrifice—the vow Douglas MacArthur made to return to the Philippines and the oath his fellow general Jonathan Mayhew Wainwright made to stay with his men there\, whatever the cost. For the doomed stand American forces made in the Philippines at the start of World War II\, two generals received their country’s highest military award\, the Medal of Honor. One was the charismatic and controversial Douglas MacArthur\, whose orders forced him to leave his soldiers on the islands to starvation and surrender\, but whose vow to return echoed around the globe. The other was the gritty Jonathan Mayhew Wainwright\, who became a hero to the troops whose fate he insisted on sharing even when it meant becoming the highest-ranking American prisoner of the Japanese. In The Fate of the Generals\, bestselling author Jonathan Horn brings together the story of two men who received the same medal but found honor on very different paths. MacArthur’s journey would require a daring escape with his wife and young child to Australia and then years of fighting over the thousands of miles needed to make it back to the Philippines\, where he would fulfill his famous vow only to see the city he called home burn. Wainwright’s journey would take him from the Philippines to Taiwan and Manchuria as his captors tortured him in prisons and left him to wonder whether his countrymen would ever understand the choice he had made to surrender for the sake of his men. \nAbout the Author \nJonathan Horn is an author and former White House presidential speechwriter whose books include Washington’s End and the Robert E. Lee biography The Man Who Would Not Be Washington\, which was a Washington Post bestseller. On April 15\, 2025\, Scribner published his newest book\, The Fate of the Generals: MacArthur\, Wainwright\, and the Epic Battle for the Philippines. Jonathan has written for outlets including The Wall Street Journal\, The Washington Post\, The New York Times Disunion series\, New York Post\, The Daily Beast\, National Review\, and POLITICO. He has appeared on CBS Sunday Morning\, CNN\, Fox News\, MSNBC\, and PBS NewsHour. During his time at the White House\, Jonathan served as a speechwriter and special assistant to President George W. Bush. A graduate of Yale University\, Jonathan now lives in Bethesda\, Maryland\, with his wife\, children\, and dog.

SUMMARY:Verdura and Belperron // Lasting Legacy
DESCRIPTION:Jewelry that stands the test of time. Join us to learn about the legacies of two master jewelers\, Duke Fulco di Verdura and Suzanne Belperron\, each of whom trace their start during 1920s Paris scene and continue to inspire today. Separately known for stand-out icons such as signature cuffs worn by Coco Chanel\, through to exclusive designs for clientele such as Elsa Schiaparelli\, the Duchess of Windsor and Diana Vreeland – the exquisite artistry behind the pieces is that to be studied and admired. We look forward to hosting Nico Landrigan\, the current President of both jewelry companies\, who continues to build and expand the legacies of each designer\, drawing from their rich archives of original sketches\, less than half of which have ever been realized.  \nAbout Verdura \nDuke Fulco di Verdura (1899–1978) began his career in 1920s Paris\, designing the iconic Maltese Cross Cuffs for his friend Coco Chanel. In 1934 Verdura ventured to America and designed jewels for stars of the era\, including Greta Garbo and Marlene Dietrich. He officially became an “American jeweler” on September 1\, 1939\, the day war broke out in Europe\, when his friends\, Cole Porter and Vincent Astor\, financed his debut on Fifth Avenue. With Europe off-limits during the war\, Verdura gained a following of high-profile clients among New York society and fashion’s best-dressed list\, enticed by Verdura’s bold yet understated “chic”. In 1985\, Ward Landrigan\, head of Sotheby’s US jewelry department\, purchased the company\, including its archive of nearly 10\,000 original sketches\, and set about to bring Verdura’s timeless designs to a new generation of collectors. His son Nico joined the company in 2004 and currently serves as President alongside Ward\, Verdura’s CEO. In 2014\, the company celebrated its 75th anniversary with a 3-month retrospective exhibition that attracted over 8\,000 attendees. Today\, in addition to its flagship salon located at 745 Fifth Avenue overlooking Central Park\, Verdura operates boutiques in Bergdorf Goodman\, select Neiman Marcus stores\, London Jewelers in Manhasset\, LI\, Greenleaf & Crosby by Win & Natalie Betteridge in Palm Beach\, Famille Jewelers in Greenwich\, Mindham Fine Jewelry in Toronto\, and Marissa Collection in Naples\, FL. \nAbout Belperron \nBelperron is a fine jeweler selling vintage jewelry and reprised designs by the late designer\, Suzanne Belperron (1900-1983). After beginning her career with Boivin in 1919\, Belperron pioneered a new aesthetic in jewelry:  sensual\, tactile and arrestingly modern. With influential clients such as Elsa Schiaparelli\, the Duchess of Windsor and Diana Vreeland\, Belperron is widely recognized as one of the most influential designers of the 20 th century. In 2015\, Belperron LLC opened its first flagship salon in over forty years on New York City’s Fifth Avenue\, designed by noted architect Daniel Romualdez. Bringing all of her work under one roof\, the Belperron salon features the largest selection of vintage Belperron\, many from important private collections from around the world. Today\, the Belperron collection\, created entirely from her archive of over 9\,300 gouache paintings and designs\, embodies the essence of Belperron’s aesthetic.  Nico Landrigan\, President of Verdura and Belperron\, is responsible for the revival of Madame Belperron’s work. His mission: to find and create bold and timeless jewelry that speaks to a new generation of jewelry collectors. \nAbout Nico Landrigan \nNico Landrigan is President of Verdura & Belperron\, two privately held fine jewelry houses headquartered in New York. He is responsible for both companies’ strategic business development\, initiating domestic and international expansion through the two distinct New York salons and various Verdura wholesale partnerships. His mission: to create bold and timeless jewelry that speaks to a new generation of jewelry lovers. A Manhattan native\, Nico grew up in the jewelry business alongside his father\, Ward Landrigan\, accompanying him on international stone-buying trips from an early age. Nico earned a bachelor’s degree from Brown University and served briefly in the Manhattan District Attorney’s office. In 2004\, Nico joined Ward at Verdura and began working closely with the professional team he now leads. In 2009\, the same year as the company’s 70th Anniversary\, Nico was appointed President of Verdura. In 2014\, Verdura celebrated its 75th anniversary with a retrospective exhibition\, The Power of Style\, curated by Carolina and Reinaldo Herrera and their daughter Patricia Lansing. The retrospective\, overseen by Nico\, received international news coverage\, including a segment on CBS Sunday Morning\, and attracted over 8\,000 attendees over three months. In 2015\, Nico re-launched Belperron\, the culmination of a 25-year project with his father. As part of the re-launch\, he and Ward Landrigan co-authored a critically acclaimed biography of Suzanne Belperron’s life and work\, Jewelry by Suzanne Belperron. Along with the revival of her jewelry designs and the new Belperron salon on Fifth Avenue\, the book pays tribute to one of the 20th century’s master jewelers. A collector of rocks and shells since the age of three\, Nico keeps a trained eye out for exceptional gemstones and one-of-a-kind vintage pieces to further develop Belperron and Verdura’s collections. This provides his clients the unique benefit of buying both new products and vintage pieces\, many of them from the finest private collections from around the world.

SUMMARY:"The Inner Passage" // Ginna Richards
DESCRIPTION:A highway centuries older than the ones we travel today\, there exists a largely undocumented 300-mile network of colonial-era canals connecting our Lowcountry rivers for travel\, trade\, and survival. We are incredibly honored to host Virginia McGee Richards for the launch of The Inner Passage\, the result of a fifteen-year project to honor a deep history relatively unknown. In conversation with Charleston local author\, historian\, and journalist Herb Frazier\, contributing with his own experience on the Inner Passage waterway the two will explore Richards’ photographs\, which were developed on site using the water of the fields and riverbanks\, include portraits of Lowcountry descendants\, as well as centuries-old “Witness Trees” — live oaks that still stand over the waterway\, yet also witness to centuries of planting seasons\, river baptism\, prayers\, war\, poverty\, massacres\, and canal construction. Join us in partnership with the International African American Museum (IAAM) to explore a collection of part fieldwork\, part excavation\, and an overall deeply important collection of work\, along with an essay by Dr. Imani Perry\, that offers a powerful living map of history. \nIf you are unable to attend the event but would like to purchase one or more signed copies\, please visit Buxton Books here. \nPrior to the program\, we invite our Fellows Members to enjoy Happy Hour from 5:00 – 6:00 pm\, downstairs in the Dr. Suzan D. Boyd Fellows Club Lounge.  \nAbout the Book \nA deeply moving photographic and narrative history of a southern waterway that the enslaved were forced to build for mercantile shipping—but which they used to escape slavery. \nSome of the earliest canals in colonial America\, referred to as the Inner Passage\, were constructed by enslaved people living in the Lowcountry of South Carolina in the early 1700s. In a paradox of history\, for over a hundred years enslaved Black people used these canals\, constructed for white plantation owners\, to travel southward to freedom in Spanish Florida. \nIn this book\, Virginia McGee Richards documents the lost narrative of the Inner Passage through 60 extraordinary photographs of landscapes altered by slavery and portraits of Lowcountry descendants\, along with an essay describing her discovery of this untold history. In an accompanying essay\, Imani Perry writes about her own journey on the Inner Passage\, putting Black resistance to enslavement and Southern history into an immediate context. James Estrin brings decades of insight about photography and the power of visual storytelling to his affecting foreword. Together\, these words and images offer a powerful living map of history. \nAbout the Author \nVirginia McGee Richards is a nationally recognized documentary photographer and historian who lived in South Carolina for over a decade. She began work on photographs for The Inner Passage series after swimming in a local creek near her home in Charleston. Curious about the creek’s origins\, she went to the local public library and learned that her swimming hole had been originally constructed by enslaved laborers in the early 1700s. For over fifteen years\, Richards read archival documents and studied colonial maps to piece together the story of the Inner Passage. The waterway\, which was constructed as a shipping lane for planters’ commodities\, also served as an important route to freedom for enslaved and indentured people. \nA feature of Richards’ photographs and research\, “What the Haunting ‘Inner Passage’ Represented to the Enslaved” appeared in Smithsonian Magazine (March 2022) and was awarded “the best in print and digital journalism” by the American Society of Magazine Editors. Her photographs received the Gold Medal Prize at the Lowell Thomas Competition (March 2022) and appeared in a juried show at the North Carolina Museum of Art. They have also been exhibited at The Light Factory in Charlotte\, North Carolina\, and at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center and Cincinnati Museum Center. The UNC Carolina Alumni Review magazine featured Richards’s work in “Uncharted Waters\, Uncharted Ground” (August 2020). Richards is currently a Photojournalism Fellow at Anderson Ranch in Aspen\, Colorado (2021-present). \nAbout Herb Frazier \nHerb Frazier is a Charleston\, South Carolina-based writer. He’s a senior editor for the Charleston City Paper\, and the former marketing director at Magnolia Plantation and Gardens in Charleston. Before he joined Magnolia\, Herb edited and reported for five daily newspapers in the South\, including his hometown paper\, The Post and Courier. \nHerb’s international reporting includes West Germany during the fall of the Berlin Wall\, humanitarian post-war relief efforts in Bosnia and Rwanda during its post-genocide recovery\, social and political issues in Japan and South Korea and Cuba’s cultural ties with Florida and Lowcountry South Carolina. He also reported on the military conflict in Sierra Leone. Herb has written about the historical and cultural ties between West Africa and the Gullah Geechee people of coastal South Carolina and Georgia. Herb represented South Carolina on the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor Commission\, created by the U.S. Congress in 2006. He also served as secretary of the Jazz Artists of Charleston\, which supports the Charleston Jazz Orchestra. Currently\, Herb is a member of the Historic Charleston Foundation Board of Trustees. \nHe is the author of Behind God’s Back: Gullah Memories. He is a co-author of We Are Charleston: Tragedy and Triumph at Mother Emanuel with Marjory Wentworth and Dr. Bernard Powers Jr. Herb also co-edited a collection of poems and essays titled Ukweli: (pronounced – you ̶ quail – lee) Searching for Healing Truth\, South Carolina Writers and Poets Explore American Racism with the late Horace Mungin. Herb’s latest book\, Sleeping with the Ancestors: How I Followed the Footprints of Slavery\, is a collaboration with Joseph McGill Jr.\, founder of the Slave Dwelling Project. \nHerb’s forthcoming books are Crossing the Sea on a Sacred Song\, which tells the story of an African funeral song that links a Georgia family with a woman in Sierra Leone. He and McGill are the co-authors of Divided Loyalty: Uneven Paths to Freedom in South Carolina during the Revolutionary War. \nAbout the International African American Museum \nThe International African American Museum tells the unvarnished stories of the African American experience across generations\, the trauma and triumph that gave rise to a resilient people. Located on the site where almost half of all African captives arrived in the U.S.\, the International African American Museum will share the untold stories of the African American journey at one of our country’s most sacred sites.

SUMMARY:The Revolution's Bravest General
DESCRIPTION:As a Brigadier General in the French Army\, Major General in the American Revolutionary Army and a French-American liaison during a time of incredible upheaval\, German-native Johann de Kalb led an amazing life\, but his legacy is lesser known than Revolutionary counterparts such as the Marquis de Lafayette\, to whom he may have been a mentor. With a focus on these less publicized leaders in the fight for independence\, and thanks to our ongoing partnership with the N.C. Zeitgeist Foundation\, author and historian John Beakes will enlighten us on the lasting impact of General de Kalb during the American Revolution. \nAbout John Beakes \nJohn Beakes graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1966 and served in nuclear submarines until 1974. He then began a career of executive leadership in technology service companies\, from which he retired in 2021. His five books on the Revolutionary War have focused on little-known combat leaders in America’s fight for independence. He co-authored “Cool\, Deliberate Courage: John Eager Howard in the American Revolution” and “‘Light Horse Harry Lee’ in the War for Independence” with Dr. Jim Piecuch. He then completed “Otho Holland Williams in the American Revolution” in 2015 and “De Kalb: One of the Revolutionary War’s Bravest Generals” in 2019. In 2022\, he completed “William Campbell in the American Revolution: Commander of Riflemen at Kings Mountain and Guilford Courthouse.” These books have brought forth the stories of how these largely unknown military leaders made important contributions to the American victory in the Revolutionary War. \nAbout The N.C. Zeitgeist Foundation: \nThe N.C. Zeitgeist Foundation was founded by Klaus Becker\, then Honorary Consul of the Federal Republic of Germany to North Carolina. The mission of the Foundation is reflected in its name\, Zeitgeist\, which means the “Spirit of the Time\,” is to inform\, educate\, and foster dialogue about the influence in the Carolinas of the current and historic culture\, arts\, society\, and spirit of Germany and Europe in celebrating their deep-rooted ties to the United States. Its mission is to strengthen transatlantic partnerships through cultural exchange\, business collaboration\, and shared innovation. By connecting communities across North Carolina and Germany\, we foster understanding\, economic opportunity\, and artistic inspiration on both sides of the Atlantic. In recognition of the long-standing German/European-American transatlantic relationship\, the program of the Foundation focuses on the exchange of societal and governmental thought and theory\, art exhibitions\, and cultural and social events. Since its inception in 2014\, The N.C. Zeitgeist Foundation has strongly supported economic development and growth in the Greater Charlotte Region\, including initiatives to brand and promote the Carolinas as a premier US location for international business\, trade\, and investment. \nAbout SC 250 \nSC250 Charleston is intended to serve as an umbrella for Charleston-area community organizations\, governmental entities\, and business enterprises interested in conceiving\, building and sponsoring initiatives that commemorate the American Revolution and leading roles played by Charleston’s people and places.
