DESCRIPTION:RESCHEDULED FROM MARCH 25th\, 2026. \nNumerous lauded Nobel Peace Prize winners and one seemingly insurmountable mission – a cure for cancer. From the Hope Funds for Cancer Research comes the incredible short film\, “How to Win a Nobel Prize.” We look forward to hosting film director\, Gary Jobson\, along with Hope Funds Foundation board member and beloved CLS member Greg Van Schaack\, for a screening and follow-up discussion about battling this disease\, the deeper meaning behind the film and the motivation to produce this moving and intriguing work. \nPurchase tickets HERE. \nAbout the Film \n“How To Win A Nobel Prize\,” directed by Gary Jobson. The short film\, sponsored by Hope Funds for Cancer Research features interviews with Dr. James Allison\, awarded the 2018 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his work in discovering how the body’s immune system can be harnessed to combat cancer; Dr. William Kaelin\, awarded the 2019 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his work in the discovery of how cells sense and adapt to oxygen availability; and Dr. Jennifer Doudna\, awarded the 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the development of a method for genome editing. \nAbout Gary Jobson \nGary Jobson has enjoyed a long career as a racing sailor\, author\, journalist\, and television producer and commentator. He worked at ESPN for 31 years\, covering the America’s Cup and many other sailing events. John has been presented with four Sports Emmy Awards for his coverage of the Olympics on NBC and Peacock and the Volvo Ocean Race on PBS. Jobson is the author of 23 books on the sport of sailing and has a new book coming soon titled The Characters of the America’s Cup. As a racing sailor\, Jobson was named Intercollegiate Sailor of the Year two times and has won the America’s Cup as tactician for Ted Turner aboard the 12 Meter yacht\, “Courageous.” In addition to his sailing\, Gary Jobson has been an advocate for health care-related organizations\, environmental groups\, tourism boards\, and educational institutions. He has served as President of the U.S. Sailing Association\, Vice President of the International Sailing Federation (now World Sailing)\, he served as Chair of Luminis Health\, a Maryland-based hospital\, Chair of the Chesapeake Bay Trust\, Chair of Visit Annapolis & Anne Arundel County\, and Chair of the Friends of St. John’s College. He has served on the Boards of Hampton University and St. Mary’s College of Maryland. He is currently co-Chair of the Development Committee and is an Emeritus Board member of the Hope Funds for Cancer Research. He is a graduate of the State University of New York Maritime College\, did graduate studies at Long Island University in Political Science\, and was awarded a Doctor of Letters by the State University of New York in 2005. Jobson has served as an officer in the U.S. Naval Reserve and is a licensed U.S. Merchant Marine officer. Jobson has been inducted into the National Sailing Hall of Fame\, the America’s Cup Hall of Fame\, and the Intercollegiate Sailing Hall of Fame. Jobson and his wife\, Janice\, live in Annapolis\, Maryland\, and have three grown daughters and five grandchildren. \nAbout Greg Van Schaack \nMr. Van Schaack is a retired financial services executive who has lived in Charleston since 2008. His experience includes working for Brown Brothers\, Harriman & Co.\, United States Trust Company\, and PNC Bank. In his business career\, he is most proud of his founding and start-up funding of a service-disabled veteran owned broker/dealer whose mission is to create jobs for veterans and disabled veterans. The company\, Academy Securities\, is in New York and San Diego and has achieved significant success in fixed income and equities underwriting. Since 2007\, Mr. Van Schaack has been a trustee of the Hope Funds for Cancer Research\, a foundation dedicated to advancing research for the most lethal and hard-to-cure cancers. He has served on the Executive Committee for many years and is currently chair of the Investment Committee and a member of the Development and Significant Gifts Committees. The Hope Funds Foundation has funded over fifty post-doctoral researchers at some of the most prestigious cancer research laboratories in the country. With an almost all-volunteer staff and Board\, the Foundation can dedicate $0.96 of every dollar raised directly to the fellowships that fund the researchers. Mr. Van Schaack is a grandfather of 4 and a step-grandfather of 6. He lives in Charleston\, Philadelphia\, and Fishers Island with his wonderful wife\, Jane.
