SUMMARY:Indigenous Conflict In Early America // Presented with CLAW
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with C of C’s Carolina Lowcountry and Atlantic World Program\, we are pleased to invite a timely discussion on North America’s Indigenous conflicts during the Colonial Era and at pivotal moments during the American Revolution. With a specific focus on the late 18th century\, CLAW Program Director Dr. Sandy Slater will host a conversation with subject matter experts Dr. Andrew Johnson and Professor Kevin Kokomoor on their recent publications\, which put South Carolina and its First Peoples into greater context and shed light on an overlooked aspect of this important history. \nPurchase Tickets HERE! \nSecure one or more signed copies of The Cherokee War of 1776 prior to this program via Buxton Books here. \nSecure one or more signed copies of Enslaved Native Americans and the Making of Colonial South Carolina prior to this program via Buxton Books here. \nAbout the Books \nThe Cherokee War of 1776 \nThe forgotten history of the US war against the Cherokee offers a crucial reframing of America’s origin story. \nAmericans remember 1776 as the year liberty was declared\, the moment they cast off tyranny and proclaimed the self-evident truths of equality and freedom. But that same summer\, as patriots celebrated their defiant new nation\, American armies launched another campaign—this one aimed at destroying the Cherokee nation. The Cherokee War of 1776 recasts America’s founding moment by tracing the importance of westward ambition and settler violence to the origins of the Revolutionary War. In this gripping and sobering book\, historian Kevin Kokomoor uncovers the rarely acknowledged war waged by the emerging United States against the Cherokee people just days after the Declaration of Independence was signed. Far from a spontaneous frontier skirmish\, this war was a coordinated\, state-backed campaign with a clear aim: seize Indigenous land and crush Native resistance. Many of the very men who championed liberty on parchment simultaneously advocated for the wholesale destruction of a sovereign Native nation. At the heart of this story is Cherokee resistance\, which was strategic\, determined\, and deeply rooted in community dynamics. Figures like Dragging Canoe emerged to lead a movement that endured long after American armies had burned Cherokee towns to the ground. Kokomoor foregrounds Cherokee voices\, motivations\, and resilience\, challenging the notion that they were merely pawns in a colonial struggle and forcing us to reckon with the real costs of independence and the long fight for Indigenous sovereignty. \nEnslaved Native Americans and the Making of Colonial South Carolina \nIn 1708\, the governor of South Carolina responded to a request from London to describe the population of the colony. This response included an often-overlooked segment of the population: Native Americans\, who made up one-fourth of all enslaved people in the colony. Yet it was not long before these descriptions of enslaved Native people all but disappeared from the archive. In Enslaved Native Americans and the Making of Colonial South Carolina\, D. Andrew Johnson argues that Native people were crucial to the development of South Carolina’s economy and culture. By meticulously scouring documentary sources and creating a database of over 15\,000 mentions of enslaved people\, Johnson uses a uniquely interdisciplinary approach to reconsider the history of South Carolina and center the enslaved Native people who were forced to live and work on its plantations. Johnson also employs spatial analysis and examines archaeological evidence to study Native slavery in a plantation context. Although much of their impact is absent from the historical record\, Native people’s influence persisted: in the specific technologies they brought to the plantations where they were enslaved; in the development of Creole culture; and in the wealth and power of the founders and early leaders of the colony. This book is an important corrective to our understanding of the colonization and development of South Carolina. By focusing on the Native minority of the enslaved population\, Johnson recasts the colonial history of America\, uncovering the importance of enslaved Native people to the colonial project and the complex historical connections between race and slavery. \nAbout Professor Kevin Kokomoor (from 2024) \nKevin Kokomoor is a fourth-generation Floridian who grew up in the Tampa Bay area. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s Degrees in History at the University of South Florida and his Doctorate in Early American History at Florida State University. His first academic position after graduate school was at Coastal Carolina University in Myrtle Beach\, South Carolina\, where he is currently employed. In addition to La Florida\, he has also authored several articles in academic journals\, including Journal of Southern History\, Georgia Historical Quarterly\, Florida Historical Quarterly\, Journal of Sport History\, and Journal of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era. Peckham Fellow of Revolutionary America at the Clements Library at the University of Michigan. Other sources of support include the American Philosophical Society\, the David Library of the American Revolution\, Emory University\, and the University of Florida.  \nAbout Dr. Andrew Johnson \nDr. Andrew Johnson is a historian of early America and the early-modern Atlantic and is the editor of publications at the South Carolina Department of Archives and History. SUMMARY:Hunt Slonem Inspired
DESCRIPTION:Recognized for his distinct neo-expressionist style\, renowned artist Hunt Slonem can be found in the permanent collections of 250 museums around the world\, including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum\, the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, the Whitney\, and the Miró Foundation\, among others. Often capturing the essence of nature’s ephemeral beauty\, his artful depictions of birds\, butterflies\, and bunnies have been collected into books as well. Join us to welcome Hunt with TFA Gallery & Advisory\, Charlotte\, NC\, and in conversation with founder of The Stripe\, Grace Atwood\, for a riveting chat around his latest book release and collection\, Blossoms. \nPurchase Tickets HERE! \nSecure one or more signed copies prior to this program via TFA Gallery here. \nAbout the Book \nFollowing the success of Bunnies\, Birds\, and Butterflies\, this new collection showcases Slonem’s signature Neo-Expressionist style in a bright bouquet of colors and textures. Readers will recognize some of their favorite botanical varieties\, from tulips and irises to waterlilies and sunflowers\, each bloom composed of bold\, fauvist strokes in a stunningly vivid palette. Utilising watercolor\, oil\, and acrylic paints\, Slonem captures the beauty and uniqueness of Kingdom Plantae\, and as such\, this luxurious book – an art object in and of itself – is yet another powerful testament to Slonem’s imagination and reverence for nature. Lush\, vibrant\, meditative\, joyful—the flower paintings of celebrated artist Hunt Slonem invite the viewer into a fantastical garden where color and texture bloom in thick impasto. From orchids to water lilies\, sunflowers to tulips\, Slonem’s flowers transcend the tradition of still life\, pressing urgently toward the viewer with the presence of portraiture and the energy of abstraction. Presented here for the first time in a single lavish volume\, Blossoms reveals a new dimension of one of the art world’s most beloved figures—and offers a visual feast for anyone drawn to beauty\, nature\, and the transformative power of paint. \nAbout the Author \nHunt Slonem is an American painter\, sculptor\, and printmaker. He is best known for his Neo-Expressionist paintings of tropical birds\, whose works are included in many important museum collections all over the world; he is exhibiting regularly at both public and private venues\, and he has received numerous honors and awards. He lives in New York City and Louisiana\, where he has notably restored two important plantations to their original states. \nAbout the Moderator \nGrace Atwood is the founder of The Stripe (the blog) and Scratch Pad\, a top ten fashion & beauty Substack. Scratch Pad currently ranks in the top ten of Substack’s global fashion & beauty category. Born out of her passion for sharing favorite finds and honest recommendations\, The Stripe is a lifestyle destination covering fashion\, beauty\, personal style\, books\, wellness\, travel\, and more. Since launching in January 2010\, The Stripe has earned over 75 million page views. Grace lives in Charleston\, SC\, with her cats\, Tyrion and Jaime\, after spending 15 years in New York. She’s an avid reader and budding art collector\, with a deep love of Hunt Slonem’s work.

SUMMARY:Tales from the Swiss Guard
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with the Dante Alighieri Society\, Mario Enzler joins us in the Main Reading Room to reflect on his years serving in the Swiss Guard under Pope John Paul II. As both a soldier and conductor of the Swiss Guard Band\, Enzler experienced a unique chapter in the history of the Vatican\, working in close proximity to the pope and encountering dignitaries from around the world. Drawing on his firsthand experiences\, Enzler will share stories of life within Vatican City\, his relationships with two popes\, and the traditions and responsibilities of service in the Swiss Guard. \nPurchase Tickets HERE! \nAbout Mario Enzler \nMario was born and raised in Northern Italy\, in a small town in the foothills of the Italian Alps. After studying music in Milan and Verona\, he joined the Swiss Guard and served under St. Pope John Paul II in the double capacity of soldier and conductor of the Swiss Guard Band. Following his time of service at the Vatican\, he worked for almost twenty years in investment banking and wealth management. As a consequence of his father-in-law’s sudden death\, Mario left the financial industry and\, with his family\, moved to the United States\, where\, with his wife\, he started a Classical K-12 Academy rooted in the Catholic tradition. He then taught business and finance at Catholic University of America and at the University of St. Thomas\, and today he teaches Ecclesial Management and Administration at Catholic Distance University. Mario started Borromeo Project\, a consulting firm to aid Catholic dioceses\, parishes\, religious orders\, and apostolates across the world with financial problems and behavioral crises that tend to plague them. Mario is available as a consultant and advisor\, as a business coach\, as a fractional CFO/COO\, and as a public speaker. \nAbout the Dante Alighieri Society \nOur Charleston chapter was established in January 2017 by Claudio Pastor\, Executive Director of DAS Miami\, and Marina Gloria Bellelli\, then Consul General of Italy for the Southeastern United States\, who appointed Donatella Cappelletti della Porta as president\, a role she has held ever since. \nThe Dante Alighieri Society was founded in 1889 and in 1893 was formally established in Rome by Royal Decree of King Umberto I di Savoia for the purpose of preserving and promoting the Italian language and the wealth of cultural and social contributions of Italy to Western civilization. At that time the DA Society had an important goal to reach. Italy was finally united in 1861 from a collection of independent states and regions controlled by foreign powers. Forging a nation out of the various loyalties was a daunting task. Not long after unification\, a mass migration of Italians to other countries in Europe\, North and South America\, and Australia would begin. These millions of emigrants wanted to know and preserve a sense of Italian culture and language\, for themselves and their children. At the same time\, the richness of Italian culture and the beauty of the Italian language equally enthralled many people who were not of Italian descent. To reach out to these people in 1889\, a group in Rome\, led by the Italian poet Giosuè Carducci\, formed the Dante Alighieri Society\, whose mission would be to promote overseas the language\, literature\, and culture of Italy. So the society was named for Italy’s greatest and most famous writer\, Dante Alighieri\, author of The Divine Comedy.\nInitially centered in Italy\, it soon expanded to cities throughout the world where Italians had settled and where other admirers of all things Italian could gather\, learn\, and appreciate all that Italy had to offer across the spectrum of human endeavors. \nWith 87 chapters in Italy\, it has grown to 500 chapters throughout the world – including one right here in Charleston. \nWe invite anyone in love with Italy to contact us!

SUMMARY:The Marquis
DESCRIPTION:While there is no shortage of biographies about the Marquis de Lafayette\, this important confidant of the colonies remains one of the most iconic and beloved figures of the American Revolution. We look forward to hosting journalist and historian Marc Leepson on Lafayette: Lessons in Leadership from the Idealist General\, now launching its second printing with the University of Virginia Press. His focus goes beyond a chronology of his life and more specifically highlights the principled\, persistent\, and idealistic leadership qualities Lafayette demonstrated\, all of which resonate greatly in today’s political landscape. \nPurchase Tickets HERE! \nIf you are unable to attend the event\, but would like to purchase one or more copies\, please visit Buxton Books. \nAbout the Book \nThe Marquis de Lafayette is an icon of both American and French history. Lafayette: Idealist General\, a concise and engaging biography of this captivating figure\, was first published in hardcover as part of Macmillan’s World Generals Series\, and now available in a paperback edition for the first time from the University of Virginia Press. The book reveals how Lafayette\, born in 1757 into an aristocratic French family of warriors\, traveled to the colonies at the age of nineteen to fight as a volunteer in the Revolutionary War. Continental Army Major General Lafayette was soon embraced by George Washington and Thomas Jefferson\, who became his lifelong friends. A fearless\, accomplished battlefield commander\, Lafayette also helped to convince the French court to provide crucial financial and military support to the Americans\, which immeasurably aided the defeat of the British. On his return to France\, Lafayette played a leading role in the movement to make France a constitutional monarchy. He served as commander of the National Guard during the French Revolution\, and as a member of the Chamber of Deputies\, opposed Napoleon’s rule. Later\, in 1830\, he was instrumental in ending the short-lived July Revolution that brought the “citizen king\,” Louis-Philippe\, to the throne. This focused biography of the legendary French statesman and military man offers a unique examination of his remarkable military career on both sides of the Atlantic. \nAbout the Author \nJournalist and historian Marc Leepson is the author of eleven books\, including Saving Monticello; Flag: An American Biography\, a history of the Stars & Stripes from its beginnings to the 21st century; What So Proudly We Hailed: Francis Scott Key\, A Life; and Lafayette: Idealist General\, a concise biography of the Marquis de Lafayette. His latest book\, The Unlikely War Hero\, a slice-of-life biography of Doug Hegdahl\, the youngest and lowest-ranking American POW held in North Vietnam\, was published in December 2024. A former staff writer for Congressional Quarterly in Washington\, D.C.\, he has written for many magazines and newspapers\, including Preservation\, Smithsonian\, Military History\, Civil War Times\, the Washington Post\, New York Times\, New York Times Book Review\, and The Wall Street Journal. He has also written entries for the Encyclopedia Britannica\, Encyclopedia Americana\, and the Dictionary of Virginia Biography. He is Senior Writer\, Arts Editor\, and columnist for The VVA Veteran\, the magazine published by Vietnam Veterans of America. From 2008-2015\, he taught U.S. history at Laurel Ridge Community College in Warrenton\, Virginia. He has been interviewed many times on radio\, television\, and podcasts\, including on The Today Show\, CNN\, MSNBC\, Discovery Channel\, The History Channel\, History Detectives\, All Things Considered\, Talk of the Nation\, Morning Edition\, and The BBC NewsHour. And he has presented papers\, chaired panels at academic conferences\, and spoken to students at many colleges\, universities\, and high schools. Marc Leepson graduated from George Washington University in 1967. After serving in the U.S. Army from 1967-69\, including a year in the Vietnam War\, he received his honorable discharge and went on to earn a Master’s Degree in history from George Washington in 1971. He lives in Loudoun County\, Virginia\, with his wife\, Janna. Their daughter\, son-in-law\, and two-and-a-half-year-old twin granddaughters live on James Island.
