SUMMARY:2084 // Admiral Stavridis' Latest
DESCRIPTION:With a PhD in International Relations\, Admiral James Stavridis has published fifteen books and hundreds of articles in leading journals around the world\, yet NYT bestselling author is only one of his many titles. Retired 4-star officer of the US Navy\, Supreme Allied Commander\, Dean at Tufts University are a few others\, along with his current role as Partner and Vice Chairman with Carlyle Group. Following the success of 2034\, which he co-authored with Elliott Ackerman\, we could not be more honored to welcome Admiral Stavridis to Charleston to share its next iteration – 2084: A Novel of Future War. We look forward to seeing you for a special opportunity to share the room with this decorated Navy Veteran and prolific author. \nIf you are unable to attend the event but would like to purchase one or more signed copies\, please visit Buxton Books here. \nPurchase tickets HERE. \nPlease note\, we’ve updated our ticketing system—purchases now go through Neon Events for a smoother registration experience. For any issues\, please call our Front Desk at 843-723-9912.\nAbout the Author \nAdmiral James Stavridis is Partner and Vice Chairman of Carlyle and Chair of the Board of Trustees of The Rockefeller Foundation\, following five years as the 12th Dean of The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. A retired 4-star officer in the U.S. Navy\, he led the NATO Alliance in global operations from 2009 to 2013 as Supreme Allied Commander with responsibility for Afghanistan\, Libya\, the Balkans\, Syria\, counter piracy\, and cyber security. He also served as Commander of U.S. Southern Command\, with responsibility for all military operations in Latin America from 2006-2009. He earned more than 50 medals\, including 28 from foreign nations\, in his 37-year military career. Earlier in his military career\, he commanded the top ship in the Atlantic Fleet\, winning the Battenberg Cup\, as well as a squadron of destroyers and a carrier strike group – all in combat. In 2016\, he was vetted for Vice President by Hillary Clinton and subsequently invited to Trump Tower to discuss a cabinet position in the Trump Administration. Admiral Stavridis earned a PhD in international relations and has published fifteen books and hundreds of articles in leading journals around the world\, including the recent novel 2034: A Novel of the Next World War\, which was a New York Times bestseller and To Risk It All: Nine Conflicts and The Crucible of Decision. His most recent novel\, The Restless Wave: A Novel of the United States Navy\, was published in October 2024\, and The Admiral’s Bookshelf was published in March 2025. His 2012 TED talk on global security has close to one million views. Admiral Stavridis is a Bloomberg Opinion columnist and Senior Military Analyst for CNN. \nAbout the Book \nA gripping drama and chilling prophecy about the possible path to war for a planet devastated by climate change. In their novel 2034\, decorated military officers and award-winning authors Elliot Ackerman and Admiral James Stavridis imagined a war between the US and China. In their follow-up novel\, 2054\, they envisioned a breakdown in American politics fueled by a radical advance in AI. Now they make their boldest\, most astonishing\, and arguably most necessary leap—imagining the consequences of a climate war. By the year 2084\, the world is divided into the equatorial countries that bear the brunt of the climate crisis—led by Nigeria\, Brazil\, and Indonesia—and wealthier countries like China and the US\, beset by their own problems after a series of civil wars. Tensions between the two sets of countries have reached a breaking point\, until finally the so-called Reparationist nations of the equator decide that only military force can bring them justice. A fascinating and disturbingly plausible extrapolation from current realities\, 2084\, like other classics of the genre such as Kim Stanley Robinson’s The Ministry for the Future and Neal Stephenson’s Termination Shock\, deploys a global cast of characters\, all protecting their interests as the fate of human civilization hangs in the balance. Individuals often seem small in the face of the forces that drive global change\, but in the end\, human agency proves surprisingly decisive. Big doors can swing on small hinges. We have it within ourselves to write a different destiny\, if only we can imagine it.

SUMMARY:Cinelle Barnes // "A Way Home"
DESCRIPTION:Creator of the widely beloved Monsoon Mansion\, Charleston-based author Cinelle Barnes will soon release her second book\, a special personal memoir\, and we could not be more honored to host her pub week debut. After a multi-year recovery\, A Way Home documents the unexpected journey of recovery and rediscovery\, following a traumatic brain injury\, and how she charted her way back. Cinelle was last in the Main Reading Room to support our Inaugural Book Drop launch in September of 2024\, and we could not be more humbled to support this exciting launch. \nIf you are unable to attend the event but would like to purchase one or more signed copies\, please visit Buxton Books. \nPurchase tickets HERE. \nPlease note\, we’ve updated our ticketing system—purchases now go through Neon Events for a smoother registration experience. For any issues\, please call our Front Desk at 843-723-9912.\nAbout the Book \nIn 2023\, Cinelle Barnes is writing a travelogue about journeying home to the Philippines after a twenty-year separation when she suffers a traumatic brain injury. Cinelle’s story of her adoption and immigration to America as a child is not an easy one to tell to begin with. Suddenly\, it seems impossible. Her memories and her connection to her husband and daughter in the Carolinas\, to her own sense of self\, and to her past are all erased in the blink of an eye. Cinelle has to not only piece together who she used to be but also struggle to learn who she is here and now. In this memoir of resilience and recovery\, Cinelle charts her way back to life. Through her unfinished manuscript\, she sees a creative and vibrant former self she longs to remember and to know all over again. With the everlasting support of family and friends\, Cinelle discovers that nobody heals or journeys home alone. \nAbout the Author \nCinelle Barnes is the Philippine-born author of Monsoon Mansion: A Memoir\, Malaya: Essays on Freedom\, and A Way Home: A Memoir of Losing Yourself and the Beauty of Returning. She is also the editor of the New York Times “New and Noteworthy” A Measure of Belonging: Twenty-One Writers of Color on the New American South. Cinelle is a survivor of a brain aneurysm rupture and sits on the Brain Injury Leadership Council of South Carolina\, and is the recipient of awards and fellowships from the Sustainable Arts Fund\, the Authors League Fund\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, South Arts\, and the North American Travel Journalists Association\, among others. She has served on the jury panels for several literary awards\, including the inaugural Pulitzer Prize for Memoir. Her writing has appeared in Coastal Living\, Travel + Leisure\, Buzzfeed\, Catapult\, Electric Literature\, and Longreads\, among others. Cinelle lives in Charleston\, SC\, with her husband\, daughter\, and cat.

The first\, inspired by James Joyce’s novel Ulysses\, comes alive appropriately on Bloomsday for a mix of Irish music\, narration\, and episodes of live theater. This day gets its namesake from the character Leopold Bloom\, whose wife Molly will take the stage for personal excerpts interspersed with narration by Charleston’s very own culture journalist and owner of the CultureSouth\, Maura Hogan\, to guide you through several excerpts of this masterpiece that is considered one of the most important works of the genre and a classic of the period. \nPurchase tickets HERE. \nPlease note\, we’ve updated our ticketing system—purchases now go through Neon Events for a smoother registration experience. For any issues\, please call our Front Desk at 843-723-9912. \nAbout Christy Pleasant \n\n\n\nChristy began performing professionally on stage and screen in her teens in Charlotte\, NC. She portrayed her first Revolutionary “daughter” in a documentary film with WTVI\, Quilts & Sabers\, at age 16\, portraying Suzannah Barnet at ages 15\,19\, and 90. She performed all over Charlotte\, and her love of the theater led her to the University of North Carolina School of the Arts\, where she met her husband\, Henry Cabaniss\, a Charlestonian. After a classical actor’s conservatory education\, and before marriage and family\, Henry and Christy worked in regional theater and lived in NYC. While in NY and Connecticut\, Christy expanded her collaborations to include Rob Faust’s Mask Works and ISO Dance company\, whose innovative storytelling expanded her art. Once married\, Christy worked in Charleston with performances in Spoleto USA\, Piccolo Spoleto\, the American Academy of Dramatic Arts\, and Midtown Productions while also teaching at Charleston Stage. Over the years\, as she and Henry raised two sons\, she began a full-length play\, set in Charleston\, called Seeking Trespass\, which has recently been submitted to new play competitions. She worked in Charlotte with Charlotte Repertory Theater and guest-starred in OMIMEO’s shows Black Light Magic and Vaude Visual. Her innovative puppetry designs and humanettes were used in these popular running shows for over 10 years at Imaginon’s Children’s Theater of Charlotte and the Levine Center for the Arts. Her collaborations with Grey Seal Puppets led to the 50th Anniversary production of Bambi: A Life in the Woods with the Charlotte Children’s Theater and over 15 years of puppetry with Charlotte’s Singing Christmas Tree. Her passion for helping younger actors brought many teaching opportunities in Charlotte and Charleston\, including a workshop she taught at Queens University of Charlotte’s theater department in 2009. In that workshop\, she first brought to life Queen Charlotte\, utilizing a whole new performance style where history and literature intersect\, in an interactive “living history.” \n\n\n\nAbout Historical Performance Events \n\n\n\nMany influences contributed to Christy’s productions with Historic Performance Events. Her education at the University of North Carolina’s School of the Arts provided a full immersion into the different ages and styles of theater. It became necessary to understand the language and culture of the literature\, in addition to the textual analysis and performance. Her collaboration with educators\, linguists\, historians\, costumers\, and other performers gave birth to a connection with audiences that can be very personal. Christy enjoys the freedom in writing her own style of performance that is not dependent on an outside “theater agent\,” and her successes prove that there is a need for storytelling that is missed by the entertainment industry. Her career has been unconventional\, but it has allowed her artistic voice to mature. As James Joyce said\, “It’s not important what you write\, but how you write.” Christy is fascinated with unique ways to immerse her audiences in the culture\, language\, and lives of historic and literary characters while bringing these custom theater experiences to unconventional places. After establishing her brand\, Christy launched HPE in 2019 and has been bringing audiences in contact with the famous and infamous in North and South Carolina and internationally as well. HPE has played with time and space to curious audiences all over\, in televised PSA’s\, fundraising campaigns\, corporate and private conventions\, and with private museums and festivals. HPE creates work that we would like to see and has found that we have connected with eager audiences everywhere.

SUMMARY:The Quest for Humanity // Andrea Wulf
DESCRIPTION:Having had the pleasure of hosting Andrea Wulf several times before\, we look forward to the return of this renowned horticultural writer who lectures widely across the world and has written for many newspapers\, including the Guardian\, Financial Times\, The Atlantic\, and New York Times. Award-winning author Andrea Wulf’s latest book\, The Traveler\, steps into the world of eighteenth-century Europe through the eyes of a remarkable young naturalist\, writer\, and revolutionary\, George Forster. Through an incredible life forgotten by history\, Forster travelled the world on exploratory journeys\, regaling the world with his radical opinions on human nature. \nPurchase tickets HERE! \nPlease note\, we’ve updated our ticketing system—purchases now go through Neon Events for a smoother registration experience. For any issues\, please call our Front Desk at 843-723-9912. \nIf you are unable to attend the event\, but would like to purchase one or more copies\, please visit Buxton Books. \nAbout the Book \nFrom an early age\, it was clear that George Forster possessed a brilliant mind. At just ten years old\, he became a botanist when he accompanied his irascible father\, Reinhold\, on a wild expedition to Russia. By the time he was twelve\, they had moved to London\, and the young boy soon became the breadwinner by publishing translations of the most popular travel accounts of the day. Then\, in 1772\, at the age of seventeen\, George Forster joined Cook’s second voyage\, the most daring expedition of the time. \nThe HMS Resolution set sail with orders to find what was then the hypothetical southern continent of Antarctica\, stopping at the islands of the South Pacific— including New Zealand\, Vanuatu\, Tonga\, Tahiti\, and Easter Island—along the way. The Resolution carried the ambitions of the most powerful empire in the world\, but Forster brought an understanding that was far ahead of his day. A gifted observer\, linguist\, artist\, and writer\, he studied the diverse cultures of the world without prejudice and was one of the first Europeans to talk about universal human rights. \nRecognized on his return as one of Europe’s brightest minds\, Forster used his fame to advocate for freedom and human rights and wrote against empire\, white supremacy\, and slavery. He admired strong\, educated women\, even accepting his wife’s independence—and her love affairs. Driven by his passion for equality\, Forster would eventually be pulled into the vortex of the French Revolution and live in Paris during the Reign of Terror. Throughout it all\, he held close the radical belief that our common humanity is far greater than what sets us apart. The Traveler recounts the remarkable life of this deeply curious and exceptional man who\, though largely forgotten by history\, truly belonged to the future. \nAbout the Author \n\n\nAndrea Wulf is an award-winning author of several books\, including Magnificent Rebels and the international bestseller The Invention of Nature. Alexander von Humboldt’s New World\, which was published in 27 languages. A New York Times bestseller\, it also won fifteen international literary awards\, including the Royal Society Science Book Prize and the LA Times Book Prize. Her new book\, ‘The Traveller’ will be published in June 2026. Andrea is a member of PEN American Center\, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature\, and a Miller Scholar at the Santa Fe Institute.
