SUMMARY:Slava Ukraini: Charlestonians Abroad
DESCRIPTION:The Ukraine-Russian conflict has become consuming in a way that can be overwhelming\, and we may not know where to even begin to help. We look forward to this ‘from the front lines’ report from members and friends of the Library Society\, Duke Hagerty and Walter Fiederowicz\, who have recently returned from an aid-oriented trip\, where they gleaned much about what is desperately needed. At its origins\, the trip was to deliver medical supplies\, but in addition\, they discovered an underground jellyfish museum\, survived midnight air raids\, and so much more. Duke’s daughter\, Lowcountry author and radio host Gervais Hagerty\, will moderate the conversation so that we can all also experience an unforgettable journey to help those in need. \nAbout Richard (Duke) Hagerty\, MD \nDr. Hagerty is a retired plastic and reconstructive surgeon who was head of the Division of Plastic Surgery at the Medical University of South Carolina. During his career\, he frequently traveled internationally to operate — principally on cleft palate patients- and to teach surgical techniques. He served on Charleston’s City Council and is a lifelong environmentalist. He is also a surrealist artist. He moved to Charleston at the age of two\, so while he has lived here most of his life\, he is considered to be from Off. \nAbout Walter Fiederowicz \nWalter Fiederowicz is a graduate of Yale University and the University of Virginia School of Law. Following law school\, he served as a White House Fellow and worked in the Justice Department in a variety of positions\, culminating in his appointment as Associate Deputy Attorney General of the United States. After leaving government service\, he had a career in law and finance based in Connecticut and New York. He founded the Charleston Literary Festival in 2017 and currently serves as Chair of the organization\, as well as volunteering his time as a Board member of the Preservation Society of Charleston and the Rivers Performance Hall Foundation. \nAbout the Gervais Hagerty \nGervais Hagerty Del Porto grew up in Charleston. After a career in broadcast journalism\, she taught communications to cadets at The Citadel. She now hosts a weekly show on OHM Radio\, teaches creative writing\, and writes novels inspired by her hometown. She’s also a newly minted board member of the Charleston Library Society.

SUMMARY:Guerrilla Shakespeare // The Real Will Shakespeare Reveal
DESCRIPTION:Along with the College of Charleston\, we are thrilled to celebrate the arts and culture through a shared appreciation and history of William Shakespeare’s work. This special collaboration between the Library Society’s Special Collections and Igoe Shakespeare Library along with the College of Charleston’s Department of Theatre and Dance invites the Lowcountry community to participate in the historical acclaim of Shakespeare across two unique formats throughout the year – first during this evening’s Guerilla Shakespeare\, and later in June Shakespeare on the Steps. \nNow in its third year\, join for this reception-style format to enjoy refreshments and light hors d’oeuvres while the College of Charleston Theatre performers creatively (and perhaps spontaneously!) interject various soliloquies\, sonnets\, or other abbreviated renditions of Shakespeare works and performances.  This year’s thematic narrative – “Will the Real Shakespeare Please Stand Up” – is sure to delight. \nAs inspired by the Public Theater of NY\, we agree that “Theater is an essential cultural force…art and culture belong to everyone.” For Shakespeare enthusiasts\, this is an evening not to be missed. \n\nEntry is free for Students with RSVP & photo ID.

SUMMARY:'Skylark' // Paula McLain's Latest
DESCRIPTION:Earning international acclaim and beloved by literary luminaries such as Ann Patchett and Jodi Picoult\, author Paula McLain has been credited with a renewed devotion to the historical novel following the success of her bestselling book\, The Paris Wife\, and Circling the Sun\, which followed soon after. To kick off the year\, we’re thrilled to host Paula\, within publication week of the tour of her latest release\, Skylark\, where she returns to Paris\, and the city of love takes flight once again despite the shadows of war – tracing love and resilience across timelines and through adversity.  Joining Paula in conversation will be Buxton Books very own Polly Buxton. \nIf you are unable to attend the event but would like to purchase one or more signed copies\, visit Buxton Books here! \nAbout the Book \nThe New York Times bestselling author of The Paris Wife weaves a mesmerizing tale of Paris above and below—where a woman’s quest for artistic freedom in 1664 intertwines with a doctor’s dangerous mission during the German occupation in the 1940s\, revealing a story of courage and resistance that transcends time. \n1664: Alouette Voland is the daughter of a master dyer at the famed Gobelin Tapestry Works\, who secretly dreams of escaping her circumstances and creating her own masterpiece. When her father is unjustly imprisoned\, Alouette’s efforts to save him lead to her own confinement in the notorious Salpêtrière asylum\, where thousands of women are held captive and cruelly treated. But within its grim walls\, she discovers a small group of brave allies\, and the possibility of a life bigger than she ever imagined. \n1939: Kristof Larson is a medical student beginning his psychiatric residency in Paris\, whose neighbors on the Rue de Gobelins are a Jewish family who have fled Poland. When Nazi forces descend on the city\, Kristof becomes their only hope for survival\, even as his work as a doctor is jeopardized. \nA spellbinding and transportive look at a side of Paris known to very few—the underground city that is a mirror reflection of the glories above—Paula McLain’s unforgettable new novel chronicles two parallel journeys of defiance and rescue that connect in ways both surprising and deeply moving. \nAbout the Author \nPaula McLain is the New York Times bestselling author of six novels\, including The Paris Wife\, Circling the Sun\, and Love and Ruin\, as well as two collections of poetry and a memoir. Her work has been published in over thirty-five countries\, and featured in The New York Times\, The Guardian\, Town & Country\, Real Simple\, and elsewhere.

SUMMARY:278th Annual Meeting
DESCRIPTION:As the ONE evening restricted exclusively for our members each and every year\, we hope you will join us for the 278th Annual Meeting of The Charleston Library Society. The meeting commences with a review of the year and business agenda hosted by the Board of Trustees\, followed by an update with the Executive Director and a special keynote address. \nFor this year’s keynote\, we welcome Michael Quinn\, Emeritus President & CEO of the Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia\, for an enlightened discussion on “The Legacy of the Declaration of Independence” – a fitting reflection as we kick off 2026\, and 250 years of America. \nLooking back on an incredible and reflective 277th year\, we remain in awe of the inspired founders\, the dedicated Board of Trustees\, and the returning members who have kept the oldest cultural institution in the South\, continuously operating through so many generations. \nThis event is now at capacity — if you would like ot be added to the waitlist\, please email Gabriel Long at glong@charlestonlibrarysociety.org. \n\nAbout Michael Quinn \nMichael Quinn joined the Museum of the American Revolution as President and CEO in April 2012\, taking the helm of an ambitious initiative to create a new national museum dedicated to the dynamic story of the American Revolution. During his six-year tenure\, the Museum raised $175 million ($25 million over its campaign goal)\, constructed a new 120\,000 square foot facility\, and opened on schedule\, under budget\, and with a $50+ million endowment. In its first year after opening on April 19\, 2017\, in the heart of historic Philadelphia\, the Museum welcomed more than 350\,000 visitors and was recognized as one of the top new museums in the world by travel sites including Fodor’s Travel\, Lonely Planet\, and Smithsonian.com. Mr. Quinn stepped down from his position as of November 2018 and was elected President Emeritus by the Museum’s Board of Directors. Prior to this position\, Mr. Quinn served as President and CEO of James Madison’s Montpelier in central Virginia. During the twelve years of his tenure\, he led a transformative change\, raising over $90 million to restore the home of James Madison and its surrounding environment and transitioning Montpelier from a private estate into a premier national historic destination. He also established a vibrant educational center at Montpelier that provided over 4\,000 teachers\, legislators\, and others with in-depth study programs on American constitutional theory. \nPreviously\, Mr. Quinn served as deputy director at George Washington’s Mount Vernon\, led a historic building advocacy organization\, and worked in preservation planning at the state and federal levels. Mr. Quinn has been recognized by the Garden Club of America\, the Sons of the American Revolution\, and other history and civic organizations. He has served on the board of the Virginia Tourism Corporation and on the oversight committee of the Virginia Executive Mansion. He is currently on the boards of the U.S. Capitol Historical Society\, the Satell Institute\, and Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest. Mr. Quinn received a B.A. from the University of Virginia\, an M.A. from Yale University\, and an M.B.A. from George Mason University. He comes from a Virginia family\, whose father was a career officer in the U.S. Navy before joining the faculty of the School of Engineering at the University of Virginia.

SUMMARY:CLS Book Club // 'The Names' by Florence Knapp
DESCRIPTION:CLS Book Club is FREE\, in-person\, and open to the public—and also member-researched and led through thoughtfully curated discussion. Whether you’ve finished the book\, are thinking about starting it\, or couldn’t make it past the halfway point\, please join us. \nRSVP is required via the form below so that we can plan for seating. \nAbout Book Club \nOffered a few times a year\, the CLS Book Club seeks to explore various topics\, authors\, and diversity within its book selections. To start the year\, the committee has selected The Names – a layered novel that invites us to consider the “one … precious life” we are given. With a goal of offering space for conversation\, perspectives\, and discourse\, this month’s Book Club discussion will be led by Mary Gus Smith & Kate Little. \nAbout the Book ~ The Names by Florence Knapp \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn the wake of a catastrophic storm\, Cora sets off with her nine-year-old daughter\, Maia\, to register the birth of her son. Her husband\, Gordon\, respected in the community but a controlling presence at home\, intends for her to follow a long-standing family tradition and name the baby after him. But when faced with the decision\, Cora hesitates…. Spanning thirty-five years\, what follows are three alternate and alternating versions of their lives\, shaped by Cora’s last-minute choice of name. In richly layered prose\, The Names explores the painful ripple effects of domestic abuse\, the messy ties of family\, and the possibilities for autonomy and healing. Through a prism of what-ifs\, Florence Knapp invites us to consider the “one … precious life” we are given. Full of hope\, this is the story of three names\, three versions of a life\, and the infinite possibilities that a single decision can spark. It is the story of one family and love’s endless capacity to endure\, no matter what fate has in store. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor a copy of the book\, check out our catalog here\, or shop local at Buxton Books. \nPlease note that the authors of our selections ARE NOT in attendance.
