SUMMARY:Lite Lunch // Edwardian Britain with Jane Tippett and Martin Williams
DESCRIPTION:The Library Society is delighted to welcome authors and historians Jane Marguerite Tippett and Martin Williams for their first State-side book discussion on the diverse but complementary approaches they adopted when researching and writing about the lives and reigns of King Edward VII (r. 1901-1910) and his grandson\, King Edward VIII (r. 1936)\, later Duke of Windsor. Tippett hit gold with access to untapped archival materials\, while Williams\, finding himself unable to access the Royal Archives because of the COVID-19 pandemic\, instead utilised primary and secondary sources derived from a host of other archives across England and Ireland. Providing a fascinating juxtaposition of monarchs\, as well as the methodologies and practices of biographer historians in the twenty-first century\, their presentation will explore what drew them to their respective subjects\, and how they came to shape such compelling and original narratives. \nTickets*: PURCHASE HERE \n$25 – Members or $35 – General Admission \nAbout Jane Tippett: \nJane Tippett is a historian and archivist. She graduated from the University of Delaware with a BA in French\, History and English Literature. She received her MSt. in History of Art from Wadham College\, Oxford\, where she wrote her dissertation on the centrality of provenance in the contemporary fine art auction market. Since graduating she has worked as a private archivist to high-net-worth families and interior design firms in New York City\, Boston\, and London. Once A King: The Lost Memoir of Edward VIII (Hodder & Stoughton\, October 2023) is her first book. Her next book\, Monsieur\, which will be published in May 2024\, is a survey of the photographic work of Patrick O’Higgins\, the biographer and longtime companion of Helena Rubinstein. She currently lives between New York and London. \nAbout Once a King: The Lost Memoir of Edward VIII: \nUsing never-before-seen sources\, Once a King is a fresh\, revelatory and gripping insight into the Duke of Windsor – King Edward VIII – who gave up the throne to marry the woman he loved\, twice divorced American Wallis Simpson. Considering Edward VIII’s travels and interests as Prince of Wales as well as his relationship with Wallis Simpson and the course of events leading up to his abdication and subsequent exile\, Once a King offers a previously unexplored lens through which we encounter first-hand the hitherto concealed subtlety and raw emotion of two of the twentieth century’s most iconic Royal figures: the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. \nAbout Martin Williams: \nMartin Williams is a London-based writer and art and social historian who has worked at Christie’s\, Bonhams and Sotheby’s Institute of Art. A highly experienced public speaker\, he has addressed literary festivals\, academic symposiums and private members’ groups across the UK\, besides contributing essays and reviews to the arts and literature pages of Country Life and Slightly Foxed. His Instagram account\, @disraeli81\, has acquired over 21\,000 followers worldwide. Williams’ first full-length work of narrative non-fiction\, The King is Dead\, Long Live the King!\, was published by Hodder and Stoughton in April 2023. A London Times ‘Book of the Week’\, it has variously been described as ‘fascinating and absorbing’ (Hugo Vickers)\, ‘witty\, informative and immensely readable’ (Miranda Seymour)\, ‘a tour de force’ (Dr. Kate Strasdin) and ‘compulsory reading’ (Dame Joanna Lumley). In December 2023\, it was selected by Country Life magazine as a ‘Best Book of the Year’. \nAbout The King is Dead\, Long Live the King:  \nUnforgettable as it was\, the public response to the death of Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022 was not without precedent. When her great-grandfather King Edward VII – glamorous\, cosmopolitan and extraordinarily popular – died in May 1910\, the political\, social and cultural anxieties of a nation in turmoil were temporarily set aside during a summer of intense and ritualised mourning. \nIn The King is Dead\, Long Live the King! Martin Williams charts a period of tension and transition as one era slipped away and another took shape. Witnessed by a diverse but interconnected cast of characters – crowned heads and Cabinet ministers\, debutantes and suffragettes\, artists and murderers – here is the swansong of Edwardian Britain. Set against a backdrop of bereavement and parliamentary crisis overshadowed by the gathering clouds of war\, we see a people caught between past and future\, tradition and modernity\, as they unite to bid farewell to a much-loved monarch who had personified his age. \nFrom Buckingham Palace to Bloomsbury\, and from the lying-in-state in Westminster Hall to a now legendary Royal Ascot enveloped in black\, this is a vivid evocation of a world on the brink of seismic upheaval. \nAbout Peter Wild: \nPeter is the son of Squadron Leader Gilbert Wild\, who was a night fighter pilot in the RAF during WWII\, and Audrey Wild who was a Plotter in the RAF at the same time. He grew up in Kent\, England\, went to school in Sevenoaks and later became a Chartered Accountant while working in London.  He is still a member of the Honourable Artillery Company in London which is the oldest regiment in the British Army as it was formed in 1537 as a personal guard to Henry VIII. He moved to New York in 1980 and he is a “recovering” auditor and worked in accounting firms and banks there until he retired and moved to Charleston in 2018. He is currently a consultant and teacher in anti-money laundering for financial institutions. He is a car enthusiast and judges at three annual Concours D’Elegance. He is the mentor at The Citadel and President of the Carolinian Branch of The Royal Society of St. George.

SUMMARY:Revitalizing the Art Salon with Julie Wheat and Douglas Balentine
DESCRIPTION:Charleston-based artists Julie Wheat and Douglas Balentine took part in an Artist Residency at the Chateau Orquevaux in the Champagne-Ardenne region of France. The owners of the Chateau have created a unique residency format with 20+ artists a month staying on the property\, creating\, and sharing their work in an effort to revive the spirit of the art salon and the concepts of art criticism and fine art as accessible to the wider public\, rather than craftsman trade only to be patronized by nobility. The Louvre now holds many original artworks from Chateaux Orquevaux\, which shares ties with both Denis Diderot and Antoine de Saint-Exupery. Wheat and Balentine will explore the unique history of the estate\, which region is also where most of the iron weapons in France were forged during the 15th century when Joan of Arc passed through the area at the beginning of her journey. \nJoin us at the Library Society to hear a discussion moderated by Nicki Clendening between Wheat\, and Balentine as they explore their experience at the Chateau\, view the work they created (landscape\, portraiture\, nudes\, and botanicals) and photos of the surrounding estate and small village nearby. \nTickets: $10 – Members or $15 – General Admission \nPurchase tickets HERE. \nAbout Julie Wheat \nJulie Wheat has 20+ years of combined experience in a variety of disciplines including brand and product development\, art direction\, interior design\, photography\, painting\, drawing\, graphic design\, curriculum development\, restoration\, renovation\, preservation\, curating\, and museum installation. Ms. Wheat has worked as a professor in the Arts\, in public\, private\, non-profit\, and military sectors as well as in fashion\, film\, television\, print\, hospitality\, and retail industries.  She has degrees in Fine Art\, Education\, Educational Technology\, and Finance. She is certified as a Superintendent of Schools and Fine Art educator; both a Wendell Foundation and Getty Scholar\, and former Fulbright candidate. She was a pioneer in both distance learning and itinerant work methods helping to brand and develop working standards for implementing them nationwide through the public education sector working with New York and Nevada States and Princeton University.  Her unique talents\, educational background\, and work experience ranging from the factory floor to the boardroom. \nAbout Douglas Balentine \nParsons alumnus and Charleston native Douglas Balentine showed proclivity for drawing since early childhood. Recognizing this\, his father\, the late Neuropathologist\, Dr. J Douglas Balentine\, M.D.\, frequently took the youngster to his laboratory where he encouraged him to draw skulls\, skeletons\, and brains from life. \nHis grandmother\, the late Emily Whaley\, author of the best selling  ( Mrs. Whaley and Her Charleston Garden ) was a ubiquitously creative soul whether at the easel\, at the piano\, in the garden\, at her writing desk\, in the kitchen\, or teaching dance. The whiff of turpentine and oil paints was ever present in her home and she encouraged the young Douglas to depict the beaches\, marshes\, clouds\, and ever present shrimp trawlers. She enjoyed painting all of her life\, though for her art was one of many talents she employed\, none to the exclusion of the others. \nFrom 1977-1978 the family lived in Paris\, France where Dr. Balentine conducted research at the Sorbonne’s Pierre et Marie Curee University de Medecine. This was a particularly formative year for the nine year old Douglas with the innumerable stimuli of daily life in Paris\, being in an international school with classmates and new friends from all over the world\, and exposure to Art in the Louvre Museum. Dating from this year was his first museum copy (in colored pencil) of Gericault’s The Charging Chasseur. His mother encouraged him to draw cathedrals and Roman ruins on their excursions outside Paris. \nAfter the family’s year abroad\, Douglas continued to fill up sketchbooks and fill closets with paintings throughout elementary and high school which ultimately lead him to art school.  While a student at Parsons School of Design in NY and at The International School of Art in Umbria Italy\, some of his first works were purchased in Charleston\, New York\, Italy\, and France. \nIn the late 1990’s Balentine moved back to Charleston from N.Y. where he continued to show his work and execute commissioned pieces. Reviews of Balentine’s earliest shows noted his “emerging and surprisingly maturing talent”\, “promise of thematic content”\, and the “sumptuousness and strength of his draftsmanship”- “Balentine’s drawings are just plain sumptuous”- Nicholas Drake of The Post and Courier. “Balentine is dealing with the largest problems of being human in this sometimes confusing world… in this world of splash and dab\, it is a rare treat to see an artist’s work which is attempting to deal with the big issues”- Charles Statts\, Post and Courier. “Balentine develops a haunting image that depicts light with great elegance” -Michael W.Haga assistant dean and adjunct professor of Art History at The College of Charleston School of the Arts\, Carolina Arts. \nNotably\, his drawing “The Venus of Sullivan’s Island”\, was purchased along with the painting “A Quiet Presence” (for which it was a study) by the head of acquisitions and  was featured in Lines of Discovery; 225 years of American drawings https://www.tfaoi.org/aa/6aa/6aa362.htm  published in 2006 by the Columbus museum\, Columbus Georgia. “which owns one of the most important collections of American drawings in the southeast.” \nConcurrent with his Art and Classics education\, Balentine has since the mid 1980’s  been a student of Chinese martial arts\, beginning his training in Shaolin Kempo between Charleston and N.Y. in 1986 and earning a black belt in that system in 1991. In 1988 he began studying Taoist meditation\, Yang style Tai Chi\, Nei Gong\, and Kung fu under Master C.K. Chu in N.Y. where he became interested in the Taoist maxim  “the soft overcomes the hard” or to “be like water”. In 2003 he began studying Wudang  Kung fu\, Taiji\, and qigong with Master Zhongxian Wu (18th generation Wudang Long Men Pai / Dragon Gate Lineage) and later with Master Zhong Xue Chao (15th generation Wudang Sanfeng Pai lineage) of whom he is a disciple. \nIn 2019 while training in China at Master Zhong’s  school at the Ning Xu Quan Taoist temple in the Wudang mountains\,  Balentine was featured on China’s National news during a regional Kung fu demonstration in which he performed Ba Xian Gun (Eight Immortals Staff) and was interviewed about his interest in and study of Taoist culture and martial arts. On this stay he also began a series of portraits of the Wudang Taoist kung fu masters of Purple Heaven Temple\, including the Grand Master Zhong Yun Long. \nBalentine primarily works on commissions in painting\, drawing\, and sculpture in Charleston with related excursions to Italy\, France\, Greece\, and China. He occasionally teaches art privately and has recently been asked to teach Wudang Taiji and Gongfu by his Master Zong Xue Chao in order to share and promote these Taoist arts with the west as he continues his study of them. \nAbout Nicki Clendening \nNicki Clendening has made a career out of a passion for art\, design\, and antiques. In 2009 she co-founded Scout Designs\, creating residential and commercial interiors which effortlessly incorporate a wide range of styles and design elements–modern\, traditional\, and vintage–to achieve spaces that are both adventurous and timeless. In 2011 Scout Designs was named one of Trad Home’s Top 20 “New Traditional” Designers to Watch\, and a “Rising Star” by the International Furnishings & Design Association in November 2012. She has been profiled in Garden & Gun\, AD.com\, Vogue.com\, 1stDibs and featured Lonny magazine\, Time Out New York\, and Interior Design\, and on numerous sites from Curbed to Daily Candy\, Style Court and Apartment Therapy. \nWith an art history degree from the College of Charleston\, Nicki has traversed the globe curating one-of-a-kind finds sourced from trips to antiques markets across France\, Italy\, Spain\, and beyond for her interior design projects and BEETLE\, her online store. She previously worked for Artisan Books and Workman Publishing and has consulted for 15 years with Rizzoli International Publications to secure media attention for the fashion\, design\, and lifestyle books. \nA devoted New Yorker for the last 23 years\, Nicki lives within walking distance of the city’s legendary Museum Mile\, which provides a constant source of inspiration for her work.

SUMMARY:Literary Torchbearers ~ Retrospective on Larry McMurtry & Pat Conroy
DESCRIPTION:Following its publication in 1925\, The Great Gatsby sold poorly and quickly fell out of print. F. Scott Fitzgerald felt the failure sharply. When he died in 1940 he believed that he and Gatsby were doomed to obscurity. Resurrection of The Great Gatsby\, and of Fitzgerald’s reputation\, came in the form of one Edmund Wilson\, who was Fitzgerald’s Princeton classmate and best friend.  It was Wilson\, himself an acclaimed editor\, who pushed hard in 1941 for the re-publication of The Great Gatsby – and the rest\, as they say\, is history.  Gatsby now sells in the millions\, and is considered among the finest of all American Novels. \nAdvocates like Wilson could be called Literary Torchbearers\, loyalists who keep the flame burning for authors who have passed on. Another of these would certainly be Wayne and Dartie Flynt\, who befriended To Kill a Mockingbird author Harper Lee in her final years\, and recently published Afternoons with Harper Lee\, a reminiscence of Lee and their time with her. \nWe don’t have to look far to find Literary Torchbearers in our midst. One of them is George Getschow\, former Dallas bureau chief for the Wall Street Journal\, frequent judge for the Pulitzer Prise\, and most importantly\, a good friend and supporter of Lonesome Dove and The Last Picture Show author Larry McMurtry. Getschow started a workshop for aspiring writers in Archer City\, Texas – McMurtry’s home town – in 2005. When McMurtry died in 2021\, Getschow gathered many of McMurtry’s friends\, family\, and colleagues for a dramatic memorial service beneath the Texas Stars.  From the energy of this\, Getschow solicited essays about McMurtry: Pastures of the Empty Page was published a few months ago.  As fate would have it\, that’s how George Getschow became Larry McMurtry’s Literary Torchbearer. \nAnother pair of Literary Torchbearers are John Warley and Jonathan Haupt. Warley was Pat Conroy’s Citadel classmate\, baseball teammate\, and lifelong friend.  As such\, Warley was a witness to may of the family dramas that drove Conroy’s work. After Pat’s death\, Warley actively supported the Pat Conroy Literary Center\, and has appeared on numerous panels discussing Conroy’s work.  Jonathan Haupt is the Executive Director of the Pat Conroy Library\, Founding Director of the Pat Conroy Literary Festival\, and editor of the collection of Pat Conroy essays that was published in 2015\, Our Prince of Scribes.  Together they continue to keep Conroy’s legacy thriving. \nCollectively Haupt\, Warly and Getschow will provide a thrilling evening’s discussion on the work of Literary Torchbearers.  They will be joined on stage by James Scott\, who will perform as moderator. Scott is also an author\, Pulitzer nominee and Archer City attendee. Erik Calonius will be providing an introduction to the evening’s talk. DESCRIPTION:Join the Charleston Symphony for an elevated musical experience in an intimate setting. Enjoy carefully curated Chamber Music from your beloved Charleston Symphony musicians up close and personal as they perform distinguished works by Beethoven\, Prokofiev\, and Strauss. \nBeethoven is known for being the catalyst between the classical and romantic era. His innovative chord progressions as well as repeated themes throughout multiple movements are what make his writing so unique. Composed in 1801\, Beethoven’s Serenade for Flute\, Violin\, and Viola was written specifically with these instruments in mind\, instead of interchangeably. This was unusual for a composer like Beethoven who is not known for writing various works for flute. This one-of-a-kind piece will be performed by our esteemed CSO musicians in addition to works by Prokofiev and Strauss. \nTickets are $50.\nTo purchase tickets\, click here or call the CSO at 843-723-7528.

SUMMARY:Book Tour Exclusive // Jeanette Walls: Hang the Moon
DESCRIPTION:Along with Buxton Books\, the Library Society is thrilled to be welcoming Jeanette Walls to King Street as part of the national tour for Hang the Moon\, her latest novel that debuted Spring 2023\, and transported readers to 1920’s rural Virginia. Having been described by NPR as ‘brilliant and effervescent’\, she hits on the difficulties of enforcing Prohibition and how its effects decreased the quality of life for many middle and lower class people whose livelihoods relied on the making or selling of liquor. \n“Walls has written a stunning and compelling tale — not surprising considering the acclaim she received for her memoir The Glass Castle. The novel Hang the Moon gives us a chance to think about something that hasn’t gotten much attention — the lives of women bootleggers in America.” – NPR\, 2023 \nTickets*: PURCHASE HERE \n$ 28 – Members or $ 32 – General Admission // 1 Ticket and 1 signed copy of Hang the Moon \n$ 38 – Limited Option (Members Only) // 2 Tickets and 1 signed copy of Hang the Moon* \n*There will be a limited number of first come two-for-one tickets available for CLS Members\, these tickets include two attendees and one signed copy of Hang the Moon.  \nNOTE: If you are unable to attend the program\, and wish to secure a signed copy (or copies!)\, please pre-order through the following link: Hang the Moon or call Buxton Books at (843) 723-1670. \nThis is a collaborative event with Buxton Books\, guest information such as email and name will be shared between both parties for promotional purposes only. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nJeannette Walls is an internationally known author and journalist most known for The Glass Castle\, which remained on the New York Times Bestseller’s List for 100 weeks and also received The Christopher Award\, the American Library Association’s Alex Award and the Books for Better Living Award. She is also the author of the instant New York Times bestsellers The Silver Star and Half Broke Horses\, named one of the ten best books of 2009 by the editors of The New York Times Book Review. Walls lives in rural Virginia with her husband\, the writer John Taylor. \nWalls has three siblings\, her sisters Lori and Maureen\, and a brother named Brian. Lori\, Jeannette and Brian went through thick and thin together and they had a very tight bond when growing up. They lived in extreme poverty for some time of their childhood. After seeing the poor conditions they grew up with\, Lori and Jeannette decided to move to New York City. Lori was the first to move as she was the oldest\, followed by Jeannette\, then Brian\, then her whole family which included her parents\, Rex and Rose Mary Walls\, and Maureen\, her little sister. Jeannette Walls was born in Phoenix\, Arizona and graduated with honors from Barnard College\, the women’s college affiliated with Columbia University. \nABOUT THE BOOK \nSallie Kincaid is the daughter of the biggest man in a small town\, the charismatic Duke Kincaid. Born at the turn of the 20th century into a life of comfort and privilege\, Sallie remembers little about her mother who died in a violent argument with the Duke. By the time she is just eight years old\, the Duke has remarried and had a son\, Eddie. While Sallie is her father’s daughter\, sharp-witted and resourceful\, Eddie is his mother’s son\, timid and cerebral. When Sallie tries to teach young Eddie to be more like their father\, her daredevil coaching leads to an accident\, and Sallie is cast out. \nNine years later\, she returns\, determined to reclaim her place in the family. That’s a lot more complicated than Sallie expected\, and she enters a world of conflict and lawlessness. Sallie confronts the secrets and scandals that hide in the shadows of the Big House\, navigates the factions in the family and town\, and finally comes into her own as a bold\, sometimes reckless bootlegger. \n“You’ll fall in love with Sallie on the very first page and keep rooting for her all the way through to the last” (Good Housekeeping) in this thrilling read that “goes down easy…like the forbidden whisky that defines the life of Sallie Kincaid” (Associated Press).

SUMMARY:CLS Wine Club: Alsace Whites
DESCRIPTION:Sprouting from a lively conversation down in our Fellows Lounge last year\, CLS Wine Club originated with the hopes of bringing our members’ love for literacy and wine together. Our gracious hosts—each hailing from storied outings and clubs centered around the complexities of wine—have agreed to share wit and wisdom twice a year. Special thanks to Jerry Mitchell\, who we have named the “Wine Intellect\,” and Tim Cantopher\, who shares knowledge as “Taste Master.” \nIn addition\, we have partnered with the renowned expert Justin Coleman of Monarch Wines and for this special evening of tasting and access to unique vineyards and small-production varietals. This season’s theme is Alsace Whites featuring varietals such as Rieslings (on the dryer side)\, Gewürztraminers\, Pinot Blancs\, and Gruner Veltliners. \nSeating is limited in order to host a conversation-style wine tasting where the experts will walk us through four specifically chosen bottles and dissect the nuance associated with each. Part of participating in the wine club is the opportunity to purchase wines that would otherwise not be available at retail. Because these wines are available in such limited quantities to start with\, we must secure them ahead of time\, therefore your ticket will include one of each bottles to take home (Avg $35/bottle)\, as part of the overall ticket price. Each ticket includes your attendance to the event in addition to the four bottles. \nAbout Monarch and Justin Coleman \nYears of selecting wines for some of NYC’s favorite spots (Balthazar\, Commerce\, Morandi\, The Mark) have helped Justin (owner and propietor of Monarch Wines) cultivate strong relationships with both European and American winemakers\, importers\, and distributors. From lugging bottles to creating beverage programs\, to managing operations\, Justin has worked with some of the most exalted names in the business. Seeking a slower pace of life for his young family at the time (wife\, Sarah\, and eldest daughter\, Fia)\, Justin headed south to Charleston in 2013\, landing at The Ordinary as General Manager. At The Ordinary\, Justin fostered an appreciation for\, and understanding of\, the community in Charleston. Monarch Wine Merchants opened in 2017\, filling a void in the market at the time for a true neighborhood wine shop\, focused on wine and only wine. Delivering the highest level of customer service has become a hallmark of the shop. Justin is forever passionate about keeping the shelves well-stocked at the brick and mortar\, while also sourcing highly allocated wines for both local clients and those further afield. \nThere are two ticket options available: \n*Single $285 // $145 ticket price + $140 wine price (4 bottles to take home) \n*Couple $430 // $290 ticket price + $140 wine price (4 bottles to take home) \nCurrent Fellows may purchase tickets here.

His latest novel\, City in Ruins\, happens to be the final of the “city trilogy” delivering a dramatic conclusion to this series about two New England crime families. Winslow cites that this book truly is the last of his extraordinary career\, therefore an even more special opportunity to be in the audience. \nTickets*: PURCHASE HERE \n$45 – Members or $50 – General Admission // 1 Ticket and 1 signed copy of City in Ruins \n$55 – Limited Option // 2 Tickets and 1 signed copy of City in Ruins* \n*There will be a limited number of two for one tickets available\, these tickets include two attendees and one signed copy of City in Ruins. \nNOTE: If you are unable to attend the program\, and wish to secure a signed copy (or copies!)\, pre-order HERE or call Buxton Books at (843) 723-1670. \nThis is a collaborative event with Buxton Books\, guest information such as email and name will be shared between both parties for promotional purposes only. \nAbout the book: \nFollowing City on Fire and City of Dreams\, City in Ruins is the explosive\, impossible to put down conclusion to New York Times bestselling author Don Winslow’s epic\, genre-defining crime trilogy and the final book of Winslow’s extraordinary career. Sometimes you have to become what you hate to protect what you love. Danny Ryan is rich. Beyond his wildest dreams rich. The former dock worker\, Irish mob soldier and fugitive from the law is now a respected businessman – a Las Vegas casino mogul and billionaire silent partner in a group that owns two lavish hotels. Finally\, Danny has it all: a beautiful house\, a child he adores\, a woman he might even fall in love with. Life is good. But then Danny reaches too far. When he tries to buy an old hotel on a prime piece of real estate with plans to build his dream resort\, he triggers a war against Las Vegas power brokers\, a powerful FBI agent bent on revenge and a rival casino owner with dark connections of his own. Danny thought he had buried his past\, but now it reaches up to him from the grave to pull him down. Old enemies surface\, and when they come for Danny they vow to take everything – not only his empire\, not just his life\, but all that he holds dear\, including his son. To save his life and everything he loves\, Danny must become the ruthless fighter he once was – and never wanted to be again. Ranging from the gritty back rooms of Providence\, RI to the power corridors of Washington\, DC and Wall Street to the golden casinos of Las Vegas\, City in Ruins is an epic crime novel of love and hate\, ambition and desperation\, vengeance and compassion. \nAbout the author: \nDon Winslow is the author of twenty-five acclaimed\, award-winning international bestsellers\, including seven New York Times bestsellers (Savages\, The Kings of Cool\, The Cartel\, The Force\, The Border\, City on Fire and City of Dreams). Drew Lanham\, South Carolinian\, American author\, poet\, and wildlife biologist\, to the Main Reading Room for a book tour exclusive event celebrating Joy is in the Justice We Give Ourselves. Recognized in February 2022 by the Post and Courier newspaper as one of twelve Black Leaders in South Carolina\, Lanham is a strong advocate for the African-American role in natural resources conservation\, intrigued with how culture and ethnic prisms can bend perceptions of nature and its care. He believes that conservation must be a blending of head and heart\, rigorous science\, and evocative art. His newest work\, Joy is the Justice We Give Ourselves\, is written in his signature mix of poetry and prose\, mines the deep connection to ancestors through the living world\, and tunes his unique voice toward embracing the radical act of joy. \n“…Black joy shines through in this eco-aware\, Black-centered book that offers a refreshing point of view and demands that Black bodies receive the same beautified Earth on which we were all born.” —The New York Amsterdam News \nTickets*: PURCHASE HERE \n$30 – Members or $35 – General Admission // 1 Ticket and 1 signed copy of Joy is the Justice We Give Ourselves \n$40 – Limited Option // 2 Tickets and 1 signed copy of Joy is the Justice We Give Ourselves* \n*There will be a limited number of two for one tickets available\, these tickets include two attendees and one signed copy of Joy is the Justice We Give Ourselves* \nNOTE: If you are unable to attend the program\, and wish to secure a signed copy (or copies!)\, pre-order HERE or call Buxton Books at (843) 723-1670. \nThis is a collaborative event with Buxton Books\, guest information such as email and name will be shared between both parties for promotional purposes only. \nAbout the book: \nFrom J. In gorgeous and timely pieces\, Joy Is the Justice We Give Ourselves is a lush journey into wildness and Black being. Lanham notices nature through seasonal shifts\, societal unrest\, and deeply personal reflection and traces a path from bitter history to the present predicament. Drew Lanham is the author of Sparrow Envy: Field Guide to Birds and Lesser Beasts and The Home Place: Memoirs of a Colored Man’s Love Affair with Nature. He has received a MacArthur “Genius” Grant as well as the Dan W. SUMMARY:Writers on Writing: Zibby Owens In Conversation with Victoria Benton Frank and Stacy Willingham
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of Zibby Owens’ new novel\, Blank\, the Library Society is pleased to welcome Zibby Owens in discussion with Victoria Benton Frank\, author of My Magnolia Summer\, and Stacy Willingham\, author of Only if You’re Lucky for an in-depth discussion on “Writers on Writing” and each author’s unique perspective and approach to their works. \nBlank\, by Zibby Owens\, shares the story of a wife\, mother\, and frustrated writer who faces an impossible deadline for turning her life around in a hilarious debut novel about family\, friendship\, success\, and exhilarating self-(re)discovery. Pippa Jones is a forty-ish former literary sensation who fears she will be a one-hit-wonder. After the follow-up book she was almost done writing\, Podlusters\, had to be tossed (it ended up sharing a plot and title with superstar author Ella Rankin’s summer blockbuster!)\, she couldn’t write a thing. When she finds out that she has only five days left to finish (or rather\, start) or repay an advance she’s already spent\, Pippa has a brilliantly original idea\, and when Pippa’s publisher gets intimately involved\, it unlocks a series of plot twists she never saw coming. Pippa races against time—in her used Volvo—and discovers more about her career\, marriage\, family\, friends\, and herself than she ever could have dreamed up. \nIn My Magnolia Summer\, a gripping tale of self-discovery\, Victoria Benton Frank introduces us to Maggie\, a South Carolina transplant in New York City struggling to find her place in the world. When she receives a phone call from her troubled sister\, Violet\, Maggie must return to her hometown of Sullivan’s Island\, where she uncovers shocking secrets about her family’s past. With three generations of South Carolina women reunited—the steadfast Gran\, the troubled Lily\, the impulsive Violet\, and the determined Maggie\, anything becomes possible. Immerse yourself in the stunning depictions of marsh grasses and dunes\, as this novel transports you to a world brimming with cherished family traditions and unforeseen twists of fate. \nStacy Willingham brings us Only if You’re Lucky\, a tantalizing thriller about the nature of friendship and belonging\, about loyalty\, envy\, and betrayal—another gripping novel from an author quickly becoming the gold standard in psychological suspense. Lucy Sharpe is larger than life. Magnetic\, addictive. Bold and dangerous. Especially for Margot\, who meets Lucy at the end of their freshman year at a liberal arts college in South Carolina. Margot is the shy one\, the careful one\, and never the center of attention. But when Lucy singles her out at the end of the year\, a year Margot spent studying and playing it safe\, and asks her to room together\, something in Margot can’t say no. And so Margot finds herself living in an off-campus house with three other girls\, the three of them opposites but also deeply intertwined. Margot and Lucy have become the closest of friends\, but by the middle of their sophomore year\, one of the fraternity boys from the house next door has been brutally murdered… and Lucy Sharpe is missing without a trace. \nTickets*: PURCHASE HERE \n$10 – Members // $15 – General Admission \nIf you aren’t able to attend but would like to secure a (signed!) copy of Zibby’s new novel Blank\, click HERE\,                                                                                                                                                                 or call Buxton Books at (843) 723-1670 \nABOUT ZIBBY OWENS \nZibby Owens — like Pippa — wears a lot of hats. In this notable debut\, Roger Jones explores the strength\, resilience\, compassion\, and willpower of a band of athletes who define courage and triumph over unspeakable odds. These twenty men and women overcome cancer to not merely win a national championship but to survive. I laughed. I cried. I was inspired. The Final Victory is an uplifting novel we all need to read.”\n– Mary Alice Monroe\, New York Times bestselling author \nTickets: Purchase HERE \n$10 – Members or $15 – General Admission \nAbout The Final Victory \nA proud man humbled by his recent diagnosis of neuroendocrine cancer and his past mistakes\, Tripp Avery reluctantly agrees to coach a paddling team in a bid to win the Mixed Masters Dragon Boat US national championship. In his boat: twelve men and eight women who all have cancer diagnoses as debilitating as his. Eager to defy his prognosis and prove his worth\, Tripp pushes himself and his team to physical and emotional extremes. \nAs the races begin in the Tennessee summer heat\, four teammates’ extreme physical challenges stand out: \nSean Riley\, suffering from advanced colon cancer. \nPat Selensky\, whose life-threatening treatments for ovarian cancer test her passion to live. \nThomas Huger\, ex-All-American college football player\, coping with jaw cancer and a humbling dependence on a feeding tube. \nBrooke Wyche\, whose chemotherapy treatments for breast cancer have weakened her body. \nAfter losing a critical race\, Tripp doubles down\, but his overbearing coaching brings Brooke to the point of collapse and sends Thomas to the hospital. Facing this crisis\, Tripp must confront his own demons in order to help his teammates forge a comeback. But with Thomas in critical condition and the other paddlers flagging\, the team’s chances to win the national championship are slim. \nA debut novel that is equal parts thrilling and inspiring\, THE FINAL VICTORY is the heart-wrenching story of twenty brave men and women confronting adversity\, facing death\, and striving together for the ultimate triumph. \nAbout Roger Jones \nRoger Jones\, businessman\, philanthropist\, humanitarian and avid athlete has founded numerous business and community organizations. The documentary is the result of film adaptations of Brown’s three short stories: Boy and Dog\, Wild Thing\, and Samaritans. Hawkins captured sincere and revealing comments from both Larry and his wife Mary Annie Brown\, who offered genuine insights into what it was like to be Larry Brown the fiction writer. The Rough South of Larry Brown premiered at the 2002 Full Frame Documentary Film Festival in Durham\, North Carolina\, and subsequently entered it into a number of regional film festivals. The documentary won several awards\, including an Off-Hollywood Oscar for Best Feature Film at the 2002 Ohio Independent Film Festival\, Best Feature at the 2002 Savannah Film and Video Festival\, and Best Documentary at the 2003 Oxford\, Mississippi Film Festival. Brown died in November 2004 and was buried at Tula\, Mississippi. \nAbout the Filmmaker \nGary Hawkins was born and raised on a farm in Trinity\, North Carolina. His first film – produced when he was 17 – featured his grandmother making her “world famous” fried apple pies. The film was called DRIED\, FRIED\, AND LAID TO THE SIDE. He followed up DRIED\, FRIED with THREADBARE\, a quiet meditation on the sunlight dapples that animated his grandmother’s quilts. His third film captured a violent thunderstorm at night. \nHawkins continued to make films on a wide range of subjects throughout his 20s. His breakthrough doc\, THE ROUGH SOUTH OF HARRY CREWS debuted on UNC-TV in 1989\, and went on to win several awards\, including an Emmy Award. The CREWS bio is currently being restored for inclusion in the Criterion Collection.  His next ROUGH SOUTH entry was THE ROUGH SOUTH OF LARRY BROWN. Cited by the Oxford American as “an essential Southern documentary\,” the BROWN doc won several awards at top tier festivals and enjoyed a lengthy run on French television. \nHawkins experimental short\, ZERO IRONY (assembled from decades-old footage of his grandmother’s farm) premiered at the Rotterdam International Film Festival in 2015\, and was subsequently invited to the Edinburgh and 46th Poetry International film festivals. ZERO IRONY can be seen on the Labocine website\, a hybrid streaming platform designed to showcase science in cinema. \nHawkins jazz doc\, IN MY MIND\, premiered at the Kennedy Center in 2010\, then made a run through the festival circuit that culminated in a screening and discussion at the\nNational Gallery of Art in 2015. IN MY MIND is a collaboration with jazz pianist\, Jason Moran that deconstructs his tribute to Thelonious Monk’s infamous 1959 Town Hall concert. Championed by art historian\, Christian Delage\, IN MY MIND enjoyed a 2022 run through France that concluded with a special screening at La Filmothèque du Quartier Latin in Paris. \nHawkins is a screenwriter and a 2000 Sundance Fellow (for an unproduced screenplay called DOWNTIME). He also wrote the screenplay for JOE\, starring Nicolas Cage and Tye Sheridan. JOE received accolades at the Vienna\, Deauville\, Munich\, and Edinburgh festivals\, and recently enjoyed a resurgence on HBO. Hawkins is currently at work on a coming-of-age series for Rough House Pictures called ZONA ROSA. Based in part on true events\, ZONA ROSA is a rowdy\, coming-of-age drama set in a Texas border town\, circa 1989. \nHawkins is one of the original founders of the UNC School of Filmmaking. His most successful directing students are David Gordon Green (GEORGE WASHINGTON\, PINEAPPLE EXPRESS)\, Jeff Nichols (MUD\, THE BIKERIDERS)\, and Craig Zobel (COMPLIANCE\, MARE OF EASTTOWN). In 2010 Hawkins was picked by Variety Magazine as one of the top ten filmmaking instructors in America. \nCurrently\, Hawkins teaches screenwriting and nonfiction filmmaking at Duke University\, where he is ranked in the top 5% of all humanities instructors.

But Stella is hardly cut out for adventure; a childhood trauma has kept her confined to the strict routines of her comfort zone. When her boss encourages her to take time off\, Stella resigns herself to honoring her mother’s last wishes.\nAlone in a foreign city\, Stella falls into old habits\, living cautiously and frugally. Then she stumbles across a vintage store where she tries on a fabulous Dior dress. The shopkeeper insists that this dress was meant for Stella and\, for the first time in her life\, Stella does something impulsive. She buys the dress and together they embark on an adventure. Her first stop: iconic brasserie Les Deux Magots\, where Stella tastes her first oysters\, and then meets an octogenarian art collector who decides to take her under his wing. As Jules introduces her to a veritable who’s who of the 1980s Paris literary\, art\, and culinary worlds\, Stella begins to understand what it might mean to live a larger life.  As weeks—and many decadent meals—go by\, Stella ends up living as a “tumbleweed” at famed bookstore Shakespeare & Company\, uncovers a hundred-year-old mystery in a Manet painting\, and discovers a passion for food that may be connected to her past. A feast for the senses\, this novel is a testament to living deliciously\, taking chances\, and finding your true home. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nRuth Reichl: The New York Times bestselling author of five memoirs\, the novel Delicious!\, and the cookbook My Kitchen Year. She was editor in chief of Gourmet magazine\, and previously served as restaurant critic for The New York Times\, as well as food editor and restaurant critic for the Los Angeles Times.
