Here\, Kevin Mitchell and David S. Shields present engaging profiles of eighty-two of the state’s most distinctive ingredients\, such as Carolina Gold rice\, Sea Island White Flint corn\, and the cone-shaped Charleston Wakefield cabbage\, and signature dishes\, such as shrimp and grits\, chicken bog\, okra soup\, Frogmore stew\, and crab rice. These portraits\, illustrated with original photographs and historical drawings\, provide origin stories and tales of kitchen creativity and agricultural innovation. Historical “receipts” and modern recipes\, including Chef Mitchell’s distillation of traditions in Hoppin’ John fritters\, okra and crab stew\, are also provided. \nBecause Carolina cookery combines ingredients and cooking techniques of three greatly divergent cultural traditions\, there is more than a little novelty and variety in the food. This is true Carolina cooking in all of its cultural depth\, historical vividness\, and sumptuous splendor—from the simple home cooking of sweet potato pone to Lady Baltimore cake worthy of a Charleston society banquet. \nAbout the Authors: \nKevin Mitchell is the first African American chef instructor at the Culinary Institute of Charleston inSouth Carolina. He has culinary arts degrees in occupational studies and management from the Culinary Institute of America and a master’s degree in Southern Studies from the University of Mississippi\, where he studied Southern foodways\, the preservation of Southern ingredients\, and the history of African Americans in the culinary arts. In 2020 Mitchell was named a South Carolina Chef Ambassador. \nDavid S. Shields is a Carolina Distinguished Professor of the English Language and Literature Department at the University of South Carolina and the chair of the Carolina Gold Rice Foundation. John Snow traced the origins of London’s 1854 cholera outbreak to a water pump\, leading to the birth of epidemiology. Florence Nightingale’s contributions to the care of soldiers in the Crimean War revolutionized medical hygiene\, transforming hospitals from crucibles of infection to sanctuaries of recuperation. Yet histories of individual innovators ignore many key sources of medical knowledge\, especially when it comes to the science of infectious disease. Reexamining the foundations of modern medicine\, Jim Downs shows that the study of infectious disease depended crucially on the unrecognized contributions of non-consenting subjects—conscripted soldiers\, enslaved people\, and subjects of empire. Plantations\, slave ships\, and battlefields were the laboratories in which physicians came to understand the spread of disease. Military doctors learned about the importance of air quality by monitoring Africans confined to the bottom of slave ships. Statisticians charted cholera outbreaks by surveilling Muslims in British-dominated territories returning from their annual pilgrimage. The field hospitals of the Crimean War and the US Civil War were carefully observed experiments in disease transmission. All ticket sales are final. \nAbout Admiral Radio: \nIn early 2018\, Becca was on the hunt for a vintage radio. After a little digging\, she found one tucked away in the back of a dusty antique store in Columbia\, SC.  As she and her dad loaded it up into the back of his pickup truck\, he noticed something.  It was an Admiral Radio. It didn’t mean much to her at the time\, but it turns out that she had a family connection. “My dad used to work for Admiral\,” her dad said.  It was serendipitous.  She immediately felt a connection to the radio and began doing some research on it. Founded in 1934\, Admiral Corp. and was once one of America’s top producers of radios\, TVs\, and phonographs.  At the height of World War II\, Admiral was the weekly sponsor for CBS Radio Network’s Sunday evening program\,World News Today. But as cheaper\, foreign imports made their way into the American economy\, Admiral began to crumble. They would be bought and sold to a long list of buyers\, eventually fading from the U.S. market. As fate would have it\, Becca’s late grandfather was actually a salesman for Admiral.  In fact\, he was awarded “Top Salesman of the Year” for the state of South Carolina and even won a trip to Rio with his wife through the company\, pictured above.  The award you see in the picture to the right sits atop of Becca and Coty’s very own Admiral radio today.  How’s that for divine intervention?  Although her grandfather passed away many years before she was born\, Becca and Coty are proud to help him continue the Admiral legacy. \n\n\nFor Becca and Coty\, the name Admiral Radio has acquired new significance.  In today’s fast-paced world\, it’s easy to get lost in the noise.  When they think of their ’41 Admiral radio\, they picture the folks of that era gathered around their radios at night\, listening to the evening news.  They think of the times those people shared as they huddled ’round together. Beall was 23 years old and had one child and another on the way in 1976 when she and her husband Sandy purchased Blackberry Farm as their family home. Inspired by her grandmother’s work ethic and love for food and her mother’s sense of beauty and style\, Kreis fell in love with the art of entertaining and wanted Blackberry to be an extension of her own home. Her life has always represented the same sense of southern hospitality. Kreis transformed the original nine-bedroom farmhouse into a Relais & Chateaux estate and restaurant. After retiring from the inn in 1999\, she opened a photography studio and returned to Blackberry to lead various design projects. Thank you for your understanding! \nThe Library Society is delighted to welcome back the Yale Alley Cats\, the incredibly talented\, world-renowned\, all-male a cappella singing group from Yale University\, making music around the world since their founding back in 1943. The group will perform classic and contemporary songs\, all just with the power of their impressive voices. This event is free and open to members only\, and an RSVP is required. To RSVP\, fill out the form below with your full name and email address. \nAbout the Yale Alley Cats: \nOn a brisk autumn night in 1943…the Alley Cats ‘founding fathers’ climbed to the top of Saybrook Tower and serenaded campus with their traditional opening number\, “Sally in Our Alley.” \n\n\nSince then\, as Yale’s classiest a cappella group\, the Cats have created over 200 original arrangements from jazz standards to Motown\, from timeless oldies to contemporary chart-toppers. They’ve released several dozen albums\, held seventy-four annual Champagne Jamborees\, and performed for public figures such as President Barack Obama\, her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II\, Martha Stewart\, and Jay Leno. In true Cat fashion\, as the first Yale a cappella group to tour internationally\, they bring their unique brand of refined all-male harmonies\, stylistic expertise\, and witty charm to destinations around the world. \nTheir musical repertoire\, all arranged by current or former Alley Cats\, reflects both their tradition and diversity. It has grown over 77 years to include a mix of everything from the Temptations and Michael Jackson to Sam Smith and Alicia Keys. They add modern pieces while staying true to their roots in jazz standards from the likes of Gershwin\, Ellington\, and Porter. The complex arrangements and acknowledged musicality allow them to perform for any audience\, from ambassadors to elementary schoolers\, making for an always exciting Alley Cat experience.

SUMMARY:Speaker Series: Armand Derfner In Conversation with Deborah Kennedy Kennard
DESCRIPTION:CLS welcomes author and attorney Armand Derfner to discuss Justice Deferred: Race and the Supreme Court. Derfner co-authored this book with historian Orville V. Burton\, and it is the first account that comprehensively charts the Court’s race jurisprudence. Derfner will be in conversation with Deborah K. Kennard\, successful attorney and businesswoman with extensive experience in the nonprofit sector. \nJustice Deferred dives into addressing nearly two hundred cases involving America’s racial minorities\, the authors probe the parties involved\, the justices’ reasoning\, and the impact of individual rulings. We learn of heroes such as Thurgood Marshall; villains\, including Roger Taney; and enigmas like Oliver Wendell Holmes and Hugo Black. Much of the fragility of civil rights in America is due to the Supreme Court\, but as this sweeping history also reminds us\, the justices still have the power to make good on the country’s promise of equal rights for all. He has been counsel for\, among others\, the NAACP Legal Defense Fund (LDF) and the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF)\, and helped desegregate university systems and legislatures across the South. He argued his first Supreme Court case in 1968. \nOrville Vernon Burton is the prizewinning author of several books\, including The Age of Lincoln. He is Judge Matthew J. Perry Jr. Distinguished Professor of History at Clemson University and Emeritus University Scholar and Professor of History at the University of Illinois. \nAbout Deborah K. Kennard: \nKennard is a graduate of Yale Law School and received her undergraduate degree in Political Science from Duke University\, magna cum laude. She is a former managing counsel for Mobil Oil Corporation (now Exxon Mobil Corporation). In that position\, she supervised lawyers located in the U.S.\, London and Singapore who handled legal matters related to the global supply\, trading and transportation operations of the company and its affiliates. \nShe has served on various boards in Washington\, D.C.\, and currently serves on the following nonprofit boards in Charleston\, S.C. — Spoleto Festival USA; the Gibbes Museum of Art; WINGS for Kids; and the Charleston-to-Charleston Literary Festival. She is a member of the Executive Committee of the Gibbes Museum of Art and co-chairs the Gibbes’ Distinguished Lecture Series. She has also served on the board of the South Carolina Coastal Conservation League and the Storm Eye Institute of the Medical University of South Carolina. She is married to William E. Kennard\, former U.S. Ambassador to the European Union. They live in Charleston\, South Carolina\, and have one son\, Robert\, who is a member of High Point University’s Class of 2023.
