DESCRIPTION:Along with the College of Charleston we are thrilled to celebrate the arts and culture through a shared appreciation and history of the work of William Shakespeare. Join us for a reception format and enjoy refreshments and light hors d’oeuvres while the College of Charleston Theatre performers will creatively (and perhaps spontaneously!) interject various soliloquies\, sonnets or other abbreviated rendition of Shakespeare works and performances. DESCRIPTION:In collaboration with the Lenhardt Library\, Chicago Botanic Garden\, and The Gibbes Museum of Art\, the Charleston Library Society is so pleased to host one of our two-part Symposium Series to highlight the rare and key works of botanical illustration that can be found within our archives along with the interesting overlaps among like-minded institutions. Examples relevant to the talk will be on display. \nThursday evening\, Library Society member Ben Lenhardt will make introductory remarks followed by Leora Siegel\, Senior Director\, Lenhardt Library\, who will walk through a visual presentation that explores the work of  the renowned naturalists\, explorers and scientists who influenced the evolution of Botanical Art. Its origins trace back to the Chicago Horticultural Society which was founded in 1890\, but restarted in 1943 after a period of inactivity and restored to its mission. \nThe Lenhardt Library at the Chicago Botanic Garden contains 150\,000 volumes – including a magnificent collection of approximately 2\,500 rare books and 2\,000 historic periodical titles acquired from the Massachusetts Horticultural Society in 2002 – and offers an extensive general collection of books and journals on subjects such as botany\, horticulture\, gardening\, plant conservation\, restoration ecology\, horticultural therapy\, Midwest flora\, international flora\, landscape and garden design. In addition\, the library maintains an extensive periodicals collection of about 150 print and online subscriptions to academic journals\, horticulture journals\, gardening magazines\, plant society journals\, and newsletters. \nAbout the Rory McEwen Exhibition: \nPresenting the vibrant and varied career of the renowned Scottish artist\, Rory McEwen (1932 –1982)\, this exhibition reveals McEwen’s lifelong enquiry into light and color through his remarkable paintings of plants. Bringing a modern sensibility to botanical art\, McEwen developed a distinctive style\, painting on vellum and using large empty backgrounds on which his plant portraits seem to float. Without shadows and executed in exact\, minutely accurate detail\, he recorded the imperfect and the unique\, as well as the flawless. Appropriate for Women’s History Month\, we look forward to sharing one of a three-part series that premiered during 2020\, highlighting South Carolina Suffragists in celebration of the passing of the 19th amendment and the important role that SC had in the national movement. Although best known as fierce abolitionists\, Sarah and Angelina Grimke were the first South Carolina Women to publicly advocate for women’s suffrage. The story traces the lives of the Grimke sisters and other SC voices in the struggle for women’s rights from the late 1830’s through the Civil War. \nIn conjunction with the screening\, we are honored to welcome producers Beryl Dakers and Betsy Newman to share additional insights and context on the making of the series as well as answer questions afterward. \nTickets are free with RSVP. He has written\, produced\, directed\, filmed and edited three feature documentaries\, and is currently in post-production on his fourth. His documentary feature\, The Standard\, debuted at #4 on the iTunes documentary chart in September of 2020. It’s currently available on Hulu in the US\, and internationally–most notably on Discovery+ in Latin America and Brazil. The Book Keepers is his third documentary. It won both the Jury Prize and the Audience Award for Best Documentary Feature at its premiere with the Austin Film Festival. It’s an official selection for 13 other US film festivals\, including SCAD Savannah\, Napa Valley\, and Twin Cities. The film was acquired for distribution by First Run Features and its limited nationwide theatrical release launched June 17\, 2022. Navin for a personal account of his 2020 debut: The Grim Years: Settling South Carolina\, 1670-1720. With extraordinary detail and analysis\, Navin reveals the hardships that were experienced by people of all ethnicities and stations in life during the first half-century of South Carolina’s existence\, through a graphic account of our state’s tumultuous beginnings when calamity\, violence\, and ruthless exploitation were commonplace.  \nTickets*: PURCHASE HERE \n$10 – Members or $15 – General Admission  \nNOTE: If you are unable to attend the program\, and wish to secure a signed copy (or copies!)\, please pre-order through Buxton Books by calling (843) 723-1670. \nABOUT THE BOOK \nFrom South Carolina’s founding in 1670 through 1720\, a cadre of men rose to political and economic prominence\, while ordinary colonists\, enslaved Africans\, and indigenous groups became trapped in a web of violence and oppression. Navin explains how eight English aristocrats\, the Lords Proprietors\, came to possess the vast Carolina grant and then enacted elaborate plans to recruit and control colonists as part of a grand moneymaking scheme. But those plans went awry\, and the mainstays of the economy became hog and cattle ranching\, lumber products\, naval stores\, deerskin exports\, and the calamitous Indian slave trade. The settlers’ relentless pursuit of wealth set the colony on a path toward prosperity but also toward a fatal dependency on slave labor. Rice would produce immense fortunes in South Carolina\, but not during the colony’s first fifty years. Religious and political turmoil instigated by settlers from Barbados eventually led to a total rejection of proprietary authority. \nUsing a variety of primary sources\, Navin describes challenges that colonists faced\, setbacks they experienced\, and the effects of policies and practices initiated by elites and proprietors. Storms\, fires\, epidemics\, and armed conflicts destroyed property\, lives\, and dreams. Threatened by the Native Americans they exploited\, by the Africans they enslaved\, and by their French and Spanish rivals\, South Carolinians lived in continual fear. For some it was the price they paid for financial success. But for most there were no riches\, and the possibility of a sudden\, violent death was overshadowed by the misery of their day-to-day existence. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nAs a specialist in early American history\, Dr. John Navin as served as a member of the History department at Coastal Carolina University since 1999 with previous positions at Brandeis and Pfeiffer universities. Navin earned his Master’s degree at Boston College and his Ph.D. at Brandeis University.  His Master’s thesis was a comparative study of Civil War era holdings in the Charleston Library Society and the Lancaster (MA) Public Library.  His 865-page doctoral dissertation\, directed by David Hackett Fischer\, focused on the search for community in Plymouth Plantation.  In the 1970s and 1980s Navin managed the marketing communications departments for five major companies in the Boston area.  He now lives in Conway\, SC and spends summers in western Maine.  In addition to releasing The Grim Years: Settling South Carolina\, 1670-1720 (USC Press 2020)\, he has two U.S. patents for four-player chess and is an aspiring but unlikely candidate for the PGA tour.
