SUMMARY:Zoom Speaker Series: Julia Sweig
DESCRIPTION:Behind every successful man\, there is a strong woman. The story of Lady Bird Johnson\, wife of LBJ\, proves this phrase to be quite true. Please virtually join CLS in welcoming author Julia Sweig for a discussion on her newest book\, “Lady Bird Johnson: Hiding in Plain Sight”. This Zoom event is free & open to the public\, but an RSVP is required. To RSVP\, fill out the form at the bottom of this page.  \nNOTICE: Zoom event links and passwords are always distributed on the day of the event to the email you provide when purchasing your tickets. The email that will be sending the link and password will be dreutter@charlestonlibrarysociety.org. If you have any questions\, please call 843-723-9912 \nTo purchase your copy of Lady Bird Johnson: Hiding In Plain Sight\, click here. \nABOUT THE BOOK: \nJust months after moving into the White House under the worst of circumstances—following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy—LBJ had to decide whether to run to win the presidency in his own right. He turned to his most reliable\, trusted political strategist: his wife\, Lady Bird Johnson. The strategy memo she produced for him\, emblematic of her own political acumen and largely overlooked by biographers\, is just one revealing example of how their marriage was truly a decades-long political partnership. Julia Sweig is the first to draw substantially on Lady Bird’s own voice in her White House diaries to place Claudia Alta “Lady Bird” Johnson center stage and to reveal a woman ahead of her time—and an accomplished politician in her own right. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR: \nJulia Sweig is an award-winning author of books on Cuba\, Latin America\, and American foreign policy. Her writing has appeared in the New York Times\, the Atlantic\, the Washington Post\, Financial Times\, Los Angeles Times\, Foreign Affairs\, the Nation\, the National Interest\, and in Brazil’s Folha de São Paulo\, among other outlets. Her book Inside the Cuban Revolution won the American Historical Association’s 2003 Herbert Feis Award. She served as senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations for fifteen years and concurrently led the Aspen Institute’s congressional seminar on Latin America for ten years. She holds a doctorate and master’s degree from Johns Hopkins University. She is a non-resident senior research fellow at the LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas-Austin and the host creator\, host and executive producer of the podcast In Plain Sight\, a co-production of Best Case Studios and ABC Audio. She lives with her family outside of Washington\, D.C.

SUMMARY:Speaker Series: Dr. Jim Downs & Dr. Jacob Steere-Williams
DESCRIPTION:Join CLS for an evening of fascinating academic discussion with two incredible historians\, Dr. Jim Downs and Dr. Jacob Steere-Williams\, regarding Downs’ newest book\, Maladies of Empire. The book covers a sweeping global history that looks beyond European urban centers to show how slavery\, colonialism\, and war propelled the development of modern medicine. \nThis event is in-person and ticketed – to purchase your tickets\, click here. \nPlease Note: We are continuing to monitor the COVID-19 pandemic and greatly value the safety of our patrons. All events require masks for entry and are subject to change from in-person to Zoom format if safety protocols need to be amended. To stay up to date on this event’s details\, we recommend you check this page regularly. All ticket sales are final. \nAbout the Book: \nMost stories of medical progress come with ready-made heroes. John Snow traced the origins of London’s 1854 cholera outbreak to a water pump\, leading to the birth of epidemiology. Florence Nightingale’s contributions to the care of soldiers in the Crimean War revolutionized medical hygiene\, transforming hospitals from crucibles of infection to sanctuaries of recuperation. Yet histories of individual innovators ignore many key sources of medical knowledge\, especially when it comes to the science of infectious disease. Reexamining the foundations of modern medicine\, Jim Downs shows that the study of infectious disease depended crucially on the unrecognized contributions of non-consenting subjects—conscripted soldiers\, enslaved people\, and subjects of empire. Plantations\, slave ships\, and battlefields were the laboratories in which physicians came to understand the spread of disease. Military doctors learned about the importance of air quality by monitoring Africans confined to the bottom of slave ships. Statisticians charted cholera outbreaks by surveilling Muslims in British-dominated territories returning from their annual pilgrimage. The field hospitals of the Crimean War and the US Civil War were carefully observed experiments in disease transmission. The scientific knowledge derived from discarding and exploiting human life is now the basis of our ability to protect humanity from epidemics. Boldly argued and eye-opening\, Maladies of Empire gives a full account of the true price of medical progress. \nAbout Dr. Jim Downs: \n\n\n\n\nDr. Downs is Gilder Lehrman-National Endowment for the Humanities Professor of Civil War Era Studies and History at Gettysburg College. He is the editor of Civil War History and author and editor of six other books\, including Sick from Freedom: African-American Illness and Suffering during the Civil War and Reconstruction. \n\n\n\n\nAbout Dr. Jacob Steere-Williams \nDr. Steere-Williams is an Associate Professor & the Director of Graduate Studies for the Department of History at the College of Charleston. He also is the Associate Editor for the Journal of the History of Medicine and Allied Sciences\, and author of The Filth Disease: Typhoid Fever and the Practices of Epidemiology in Victorian England.

All ticket sales are final. \nAbout the Book: \nMegs Devonshire is brilliant with numbers and equations\, on a scholarship at Oxford\, and dreams of solving the greatest mysteries of physics. She prefers the dependability of facts—except for one: the younger brother she loves with all her heart doesn’t have long to live. When George becomes captivated by a brand-new book called The Lion\, the Witch and the Wardrobe and begs her to find out where Narnia came from\, there’s no way she can refuse. Despite her timidity about approaching the famous author\, Megs soon finds herself taking tea with the Oxford don and his own brother\, imploring them for answers. What she receives instead are more stories . . . stories of Jack Lewis’s life\, which she takes home to George. Why won’t Mr. Lewis just tell her plainly what George wants to know? The answer will reveal to Meg many truths that science and math cannot\, and the gift she thought she was giving to her brother—the story behind Narnia—turns out to be his gift to her\, instead: hope. \nAbout the Author: \nPatti Callahan Henry is a New York Times and USA Today best-selling author of sixteen novels and podcast host. She is the recipient of The Christy Award — A 2019 Winner “Book of the Year”; The Harper Lee Distinguished Writer of the Year for 2020 and the Alabama Library Association Book of the Year for 2019. They pride themselves on creating music that people can “gather ‘round to”. All ticket sales are final. \nAbout Admiral Radio: \nIn early 2018\, Becca was on the hunt for a vintage radio. After a little digging\, she found one tucked away in the back of a dusty antique store in Columbia\, SC.  As she and her dad loaded it up into the back of his pickup truck\, he noticed something.  It was an Admiral Radio. It didn’t mean much to her at the time\, but it turns out that she had a family connection. “My dad used to work for Admiral\,” her dad said.  It was serendipitous.  She immediately felt a connection to the radio and began doing some research on it. Founded in 1934\, Admiral Corp. and was once one of America’s top producers of radios\, TVs\, and phonographs.  At the height of World War II\, Admiral was the weekly sponsor for CBS Radio Network’s Sunday evening program\,World News Today. But as cheaper\, foreign imports made their way into the American economy\, Admiral began to crumble. They would be bought and sold to a long list of buyers\, eventually fading from the U.S. market. As fate would have it\, Becca’s late grandfather was actually a salesman for Admiral.  In fact\, he was awarded “Top Salesman of the Year” for the state of South Carolina and even won a trip to Rio with his wife through the company\, pictured above.  The award you see in the picture to the right sits atop of Becca and Coty’s very own Admiral radio today.  How’s that for divine intervention?  Although her grandfather passed away many years before she was born\, Becca and Coty are proud to help him continue the Admiral legacy. \n\n\nFor Becca and Coty\, the name Admiral Radio has acquired new significance.  In today’s fast-paced world\, it’s easy to get lost in the noise.  When they think of their ’41 Admiral radio\, they picture the folks of that era gathered around their radios at night\, listening to the evening news.  They think of the times those people shared as they huddled ’round together. They imagine a different place and time. And as a band\, this duo has created a timeless style and classic sound that speaks for itself.  In an age where adding mechanized bells and whistles are the norm\, Admiral Radio opts for a more natural feel by getting back to the basics of good songwriting and music with heart.  Their favorite venues are the quiet coffee shops and intimate spaces\, where listeners can be still and do what they do best – listen.

SUMMARY:Speaker Series: Denise Kiernan
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Library Society in welcoming New York Times bestselling author Denise Kiernan for an evening of discussion on her book\, We Gather Together: A Nation Divided\, a President in Turmoil\, and a Historic Campaign to Embrace Gratitude and Grace. \nThis event is in person and ticketed – to purchase your tickets\, click here. \nPlease Note: We are continuing to monitor the COVID-19 pandemic and greatly value the safety of our patrons. All ticket sales are final. \nAbout the Book: \nFrom the New York Times bestselling author of The Last Castle and The Girls of Atomic City\, We Gather Together ushers in a new way to look at American history through the story of giving thanks. \nFrom Ancient Rome through 21st-century America\, bestselling author Denise Kiernan brings us a biography of an idea: gratitude\, as a compelling human instinct and a global concept\, more than just a mere holiday. Spanning centuries\, We Gather Together is anchored amid the strife of the Civil War\, and driven by the fascinating story of Sarah Josepha Hale\, a widowed mother with no formal schooling who became one of the 19th century’s most influential tastemakers and who campaigned for decades to make real an annual day of thanks. \nIlluminating\, wildly discussable\, part myth-busting\, part call to action\, We Gather Together is full of unexpected delights and uneasy truths. The stories of indigenous peoples\, immigrant communities\, women’s rights activists\, abolitionists\, and more\, will inspire readers to rethink and reclaim what it means to give thanks in this day and age. The book’s message of gratitude—especially when embraced during the hardest of times—makes it one to read and share\, over and over\, at any time of year. \nAbout Denise Kiernan: \nDenise Kiernan is an author\, journalist and producer. Her latest book\, We Gather Together\, arrived winter 2020. Her last book\, The Last Castle (Sept.\, 2017)\, was an instant New York Times bestseller in both hardcover and paperback and was also a Wall Street Journal bestseller. She is also the author of The Girls of Atomic City\, which is a New York Times\, Los Angeles Times\, and NPR bestseller and has been published in multiple languages. She lives in North Carolina.

Much of the fragility of civil rights in America is due to the Supreme Court\, but as this sweeping history also reminds us\, the justices still have the power to make good on the country’s promise of equal rights for all. Tickets are $10 for CLS members and $15 for nonmembers. \nThis event is in-person and ticketed – To purchase tickets\, click here. \nTo purchase your copy of Justice Deferred: Race and the Supreme Court from Buxton Books\, click here. \nAbout the Authors: \n\nArmand Derfner has been a civil rights lawyer for over fifty years. Walker International Relations & Diplomacy Series: \nDuring the summer of 2021\, the Library Society received a very generous gift to establish a program series honoring a South Carolina scholar and diplomat\, Richard L. (“Dixie”) Walker.  In 1981\, Walker was chosen by President Ronald Reagan to serve as his ambassador to the Republic of Korea. After unanimous confirmation by the U.S. Senate\, he served with distinction at that post until 1986\, longer than any other American ambassador. Walker was on the faculty of Yale University when he was recruited by Governor Donald Russell to organize a new program in international studies at the University of South Carolina (USC) that he headed until 1972. In 1961\, he founded the Institute of International Studies and headed it until 1981\, as it grew into a preeminent national and international center of research\, conferences\, consultation and publications. In 1996\, the Institute was renamed the Richard L. Walker Institute in his honor. The lecture series will cover a multitude of topics\, and we hope that the viewers gain fresh perspectives on the challenges facing the intersecting spheres of international relations & diplomacy.

SUMMARY:Speaker Series: Emmanuel Ducamp - From Western Europe to Imperial Russia: A Fair & Fruitful Transmission in Garden Design
DESCRIPTION:Please join us in welcoming Emmanuel Ducamp\, lauded art historian\, attorney\, and author\, for a discussion on garden design from Western Europe to Imperial Russia. It is no surprise\, as the newly built Russian capital city of St Petersburg was to be “a window on to Europe” that it would also benefit from West European garden design. Perhaps the best known example is that of Peterhof\, on the Finland Gulf\, where Peter the Great had cascades and water features copied from those he had seen and been impressed with during his visit of Versailles and Marly in May 1717. These precise albums of plans and views were presented to Peter Ist by the Duc d’Antin\, Surintendant des Bâtiments du roi\, on the occasion of his visit\, or simply by drawing French talents to come and work in distant Russia with enticing salaries. Throughout the eighteenth century\, the process will repeat itself\, would it be in the Imperial gardens of Peterhof\, Tsarskoie Selo and Pavlovsk\, or in private ones\, such as that of Gachina\, designed for Count Grigori Orlov\, favourite of Catherine the Great\, by two English gardeners called in from Britain. Ducamp’s presentation will thus stress how Western sources were copied in Russia\, often to find themselves adapted and reinterpreted according to local customs\, climate necessities\, or distinctive taste\, forming altogether a new tradition which has been preserved to this day. This event is in person and ticketed – tickets are $10 for CLS members and $15 for guests. \n\nTo purchase your tickets\, click here. \nAbout the Author: \nAn Art historian and lawyer by training\, Emmanuel Ducamp started his career as a specialist of French Decorative Arts\, soon extending it to foreign countries such as Russia and Germany. He has been traveling to Russia for more than thirty years\, working extensively with Russian curators to create a series of books on Russian palaces and parks\, the Decorative Arts or Works of Art from Russian collections. In this capacity\, he was a co-curator for the exhibition “Artistic Lyxury : Fabergé – Tiffany – Lalique” organized by the Cleveland Museum of Art and the San Francisco Legion of Honour (2009). He recently devoted his teaching at the Ecole du Louvre on Russian palaces and German royal residences\, focusing it not only on décor and architecture\, but including the study of their surrounding parks\, gardens and pavilions. His interest in this subject was sparked by the celebrated French park “Le Bois des Moutiers”\, in Normandy\, on the board of which he sat for many years\, and on which he published a book with the French publishing house Flammarion. He currently sits on the board of the Société des Amateurs de Jardins in Paris\, and is a member of the Scientific Committee of the European Institute for Gardens and Landscapes. \nPlease Note: We are continuing to monitor the COVID-19 pandemic and greatly value the safety of our patrons. All events require masks for entry and are subject to change from in-person to Zoom format if safety protocols need to be amended. SUMMARY:Speaker Series: Xavier Salomon
DESCRIPTION:The Library Society is delighted to welcome Xavier Salomon for what is sure to be a riveting discussion about his experience as the Frick Collection’s Deputy Director and Peter Jay Sharp Chief Curator. For this program\, Salomon will focus on artist Rosalba Carriera (1673-1757)\, who was the most celebrated woman artist in eighteenth-century Europe. She worked in the inherently fragile medium of pastel and was always concerned for the well-being of her creations. The recent discovery of a sacred image placed by Rosalba in one of her pastels has led to discovery of a number of similar prints. We will follow in Rosalba’s footsteps\, from her house in Venice to the European courts for which her pastels were destined. Tickets for this in-person event are $10 for CLS members and $15 for guests\, and can be purchased with the link below or by calling 843-723-9912. \nThis event is in-person and ticketed – To purchase tickets\, click here. \nAbout the Speaker: \nSalomon is the Frick’s Deputy Director and Peter Jay Sharp Chief Curator. A noted scholar of Paolo Veronese\, he curated the monographic exhibition on the artist at the National Gallery\, London (2014). Previously\, Salomon was Curator in the Department of European Paintings at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and\, before that\, the Arturo and Holly Melosi Chief Curator at Dulwich Picture Gallery\, where he curated Van Dyck in Sicily\, 1624–25: Painting and the Plague (2012) and collaborated with Nicholas Cullinan on Twombly and Poussin: Arcadian Painters (2011). As an Andrew W. Mellon Curatorial Fellow at the Frick (2004–6)\, he curated Veronese’s Allegories: Virtue\, Love\, and Exploration in Renaissance Venice (2006). Salomon’s other exhibitions for the Frick include Cagnacci’s Repentant Magdalene: An Italian Baroque Masterpiece from the Norton Simon Museum (2016–17)\, Veronese in Murano: Two Venetian Renaissance Masterpieces Restored (2017–18)\, Murillo: The Self-Portraits (2017–18)\, Canova’s George Washington (2018)\, Tiepolo in Milan: The Lost Frescoes of Palazzo Archinto (2019)\, and (with Aimee Ng and Alexander Noelle) Bertoldo di Giovanni: The Renaissance of Sculpture in Medici Florence (2019–20). Salomon received his Ph.D. on the patronage of Cardinal Pietro Aldobrandini from the Courtauld Institute of Art. He has published in Apollo\, The Burlington Magazine\, Master Drawings\, The Medal\, The Art Newspaper\, Journal of the History of Collections\, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art Journal. Salomon also wrote (with Maira Kalman) the latest volume in the Frick Diptych series\, Rembrandt’s Polish Rider (2019). He is a trustee and a member of the Projects Committee of Save Venice.
