DESCRIPTION:NOT by the Book: Dr. Raymond F. Anton \nAlcohol: “The Good\, The Bad\, The Ugly”   \nThe vast majority of Americans drink alcohol. For many it provides social enjoyment in the spirit of conviviality. In fact\, drinking in moderation has positive health benefits\, and might prolong life. However\, drinking above moderate levels can have significant health and social consequences. Most people do not know what safe drinking limits are or how to define a standard drink. For an unfortunate few (5% of the population) alcohol use is uncontrollable and leads to significant harm – leading to both health and social consequences. Individuals with Alcohol Use Disorders cost our society $225 Billion a year in health costs\, property damage\, loss of productivity\, and family disruption. Up to 50% of American families have a close member with an alcohol use disorder. Dr. Anton will talk about “the good\, the bad\, and the ugly aspects of alcohol use”. He will draw from the Arts and some from the Literature to illustrate these effects. Most importantly\, he would like to educate the audience about the range of drinking\, reduce stigma for those affected by Alcohol Use Disorder\, and explain how the new brain science of addiction has advanced knowledge of how alcohol affects the brain and\, in some cases\, makes it dependent on its use. A sub-theme of his talk is the cup of knowledge about alcohol half empty or half full. \n\n\nDr. Raymond Anton\, an Addiction Psychiatrist\, Psychopharmacologist\, and Neuroscientist\, is a Distinguished University Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston\, SC. He is the Scientific Director of an NIH/NIAAA funded Alcohol Research Center\, (The Charleston Alcohol Research Center)\, and the Director of the Clinical Neurobiology Laboratory in the Institute of Psychiatry. Dr. Anton is a Past – President of the Research Society on Alcoholism (RSA)\, is currently Secretary of the Board of Directors of the International Society for Biomedical Research on Alcoholism (ISBRA)\, and Vice-Chair of the Board of ABMRF-The Foundation for Alcohol Research. He is an elected Fellow to the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology and a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. Dr. Anton served as the Chair of the large NIAAA funded COMBINE Study and is currently serving as Chair of the ACTIVE workgroup\, a consortium of academics\, government agencies and the pharmaceutical industry whose task it is to define the best methods for clinical trials for alcohol use disorders. Dr. Anton has published over 270 articles and book chapters and currently holds a Senior Scientist Career Development and Mentoring Award from NIAAA and has active funding for incorporating brain imaging and genetics into clinical alcohol trials. He also helped pioneer the clinical utility of the CDT blood test for the detection and monitoring of heavy alcohol use. \nIn February 2013\, he was awarded the Thurmond Wellness Endowed Chair at the Medical University of South Carolina\, and in 2014\, he was named a Distinguished Life Fellow by the American Psychiatric Association.

DESCRIPTION:The Library Society proudly presents a unique exhibit of historical and current cartoons that reflect social and political commentary. Comprised of classic New Yorker cartoons on loan from the Morgan Library\, original Hogarth and Gillray folios from the CLS vaults\, and a small sampling of cartoons and workbooks from Matthew Diffee\, an American cartoonist whose works have frequently appeared in the New Yorker magazine\, the exhibit will be on display from May 18- June 13. \nThe exhibit will be open M-F 10-4. \nAs part of the exhibit\, the Library Society will host guest speaker Matthew Diffee on June 2nd at 6PM.

DESCRIPTION:Music at the Library: Abigail Kent \nThe Passionate Harp \n$20 members\, $25 nonmembers \nFor tickets\, please click here. \nAbigail Kent\, from Charleston\, SC\, entered the Curtis Institute of Music in2014 and studies with Elizabeth Hainen\, Principal Harpist of the Philadelphia Orchestra. All students at Curtis receive merit-based full-tuition scholarships and Ms. Kent is the Maryjane Mayhew Barton Fellow. Prior to studying at Curtis\, Ms. Kent spent one year at the Royal Academy of Music in London in the BMus program. \nAmong her many awards\, she was Laureate Finalist and Senior Division Winner of the 2015 American Strings Teachers Association National Solo Competition\, Prizewinner at the Young Professional Division of the 2015 American Harp Society National Solo Competition\, Finalist at the 2014 International Young Artist Harp Competition\, Semi-Finalist in the Chief Musician category of the 3rd Wales International Harp Competition in 2014\,1st Place Winner of the Orchestra Audition at the 2014 Saratoga Harp Colony\, and 1st Place Winner of “Play With the Pros” Concerto Competition and performance with members of the Philadelphia Orchestra at the 2013 Saratoga Harp Colony. \nIn addition to these awards\, Ms. Kent has had many performance opportunities\, including orchestra\, opera\, chamber\, and solo. As an orchestral harpist\, she is Principal Harpist of Symphony in C and is Guest Musician harpist for the Charleston Symphony Orchestra. As rotating Principal Harpist of the Curtis Symphony Orchestra\, she has performed many orchestral works like Mahler Symphony No. 1\, Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherezade\, Prokovief Symphony No. 5\, Ravel’s Daphnis and Chloe\, Stravinsky’s Petrushka\, Strauss’s Don Juan\, and Berlioz’s Symphony Fantastique. In addition\, her operatic experience includes Puccini’s La Boheme\, Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos\, Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi\, and Strauss’s Capriccio. She has performed under the batons of Michael Tilson Thomas\, Yannick Nézet-Séguin\, Vladimir Jurowski\, Ludovic Morlot\, Marin Alsop\, Ken Lam\, Christopher Warren-Green\, Rossen Milanov\, and JoAnn Falletta. \nMs. Kent has performed in many different venues around the world\, including Carnegie Hall\, Verizon Hall and Perelman Hall (Kimmel Center)\, Prince Music Theater\, Field Concert Hall\, Abravanel Hall (Salt Lake City\, UT)\, The Gaillard Center (Charleston\, SC)\, Arthur Zankel Music Hall (Saratoga Springs\, NY)\, Galeri Caernarfon (Wales\, UK)\, Southwark Cathedral (London\, UK)\, Melk Abbey (Austria)\, St. Peter’s Church (Vienna\, Austria)\, and Mariazell Basilica (Austria). Featuring: Carla Damron\, author of The Stone Necklace\, a novel of recovery and redemption set in contemporary Columbia; Ellen Malphrus\, author Untying the Moon\, a tale of wanderlust giving way to a lowcountry homecoming; Michele Moore\, author of The Cigar Factory\, a historical novel of life and labor in the iconic Charleston landmark; and Eric Morris\, author of Jacob Jump\, a Savannah River adventure testing the bonds of family and friendships. \n\nAbout the Authors \nSumter native Carla Damron was named the 2014 South Carolina Social Worker of the Year and holds both an M.F.A. in creative writing from Queens University and a master’s degree in social work from the University of South Carolina. Published earlier this year\, her Story River Books novel The Stone Necklace is set in contemporary Columbia and was picked as this year’s One Book\, One Community “big read” selection for Columbia and the Midlands. \n\nEllen Malphrus lives and writes in her native Carolina lowcountry and southwest Montana. Her fiction\, poetry\, and essays have appeared in Southern Literary Journal\, Review of Contemporary Fiction\, William and Mary Review\, Georgia Poetry Review\, Haight Ashbury Literary Journal\, and the anthology Essence of Beaufort and the Lowcountry. She was a student of James Dickey’s and teaches at the University of South Carolina Beaufort. Her first novel Untying the Moon is a vibrant tale of self-discovery\, approaching the realms of myth and lore. \n\nMichele Moore is the author of the historical novel The Cigar Factory as well as author and director of its performance reading\, “The Sounds of the Cigar Factory\,” a 2016 Piccolo Spoleto selection to be performed on May 29 at the Footlight Players Theater. Moore was a 2006 finalist for the Bellwether Prize for Literature. Her creative nonfiction has been broadcast on Georgia Public Radio and published in the Louisville Review\, Habersham Review\, ACM (Another Chicago Magazine)\, Groundwater\, and O\, Georgia. \n\nA native of Augusta\, Eric Morris is a production designer for the stage and teaches at the University of South Carolina. Morris holds an M.F.A. from Western Illinois University and a B.A from Augusta College.Very loosely based on his own experiences\, Morris’s first novel Jacob Jump is set on an eventful trip down the Savannah River from Augusta to the Atlantic\, and was published by Story River Books last year.

Buy your tickets while you can. \nTUFFUS ZIMBABWE is a pianist and composer from the Roxbury area of the city of Boston. He comes from a rich background of artists and musicians\, most notably the musical genius Edmund Jenkins. Edmund Jenkins was a brilliant composer and performer in the genres of Jazz and Classical music from the early 1900s. He was internationally renowned and is remembered for his significant contributions to the development of jazz in the United States\, via Charleston\, South Carolina. Tuffus\, a versatile composer and master musician in his own right\, started piano lessons at the early age of five. His father\, a teacher\, and his mother\, a visual artist\, both armed with knowledge of their rich musical heritage\, made it a point to provide Tuffus with substantial musical exposure. Tuffus began by studying classical piano\, which he did for roughly two decades. At the age of 12 he explored gospel music at a local Roxbury church where he started playing piano with the men’s choir. \nIn his early teens\, Tuffus joined Berklee College of Music’s City Music Program\, where he began his formal training in jazz. Here is where his skills and talents as a musician matured. The program offered him a laboratory to develop his compositions and a forum to perform with his peers. At eighteen\, Tuffus received the prestigious Walter Beasley Award\, won the song writing competition at Berklee’s Five Week Summer Program\, and was subsequently awarded the full-tuition “City Music Continuing Scholarship” to study in Berklee’s undergraduate program (class of ‘05). Here he dual-majored in Music Business and Film Scoring while engaging in extensive studies in composition and performance. \nTuffus’ composition skills landed him a spot on Liz Walker’s CBS-TV morning show where he performed his original “African Breeze” with the Tuffus Zimbabwe Group. One of his original compositions was already being used weekly as the theme for this show. \nIn 2007 Tuffus continued his education\, earning his Master of Music degree in Jazz Studies from New York University (’09) . At NYU\, he studied with master musicians such as Stefon Harris and Gil Goldstein to name a few. While studying with these artists contributed to Tuffus’ artistic and professional development\, attending NYU opened up a new city of possibilities for Tuffus and allowed him another outlet for his creativity and compositions. Two of his works were selected for NYU’s State Orphans’ Film Symposium (’09) and NYU Doctor Radio. Tuffus was also honored as a recipient of the prestigious Barney Josephson Award for Excellence in Jazz. Tuffus Zimbabwe has maintained an active practice as a music educator\, teaching for two years at NYU as Jazz Studies adjunct faculty\, as well as in numerous youth programs including the Berklee City Music Program\, Hamilton/Garret Music & Arts Academy\, and presently the Piano Outreach of New York (PONY). \nTuffus currently works as a keyboardist in the Saturday Night Live Band on NBC. I hope you will have interest hosting an event in relation to this deeply meaningful exploration by three remarkable authors\, South Carolina Poet Laureate Marjory Wentworth\, award-winning journalist Emanuel Church Herb Frazier\, and College of Charleston history professor Dr. Bernard Edward Powers. The title\, We Are Charleston (Thomas Nelson imprint\, W Publishing Group\, June 2016)\, suggests the accumulated knowledge and talent among these three diverse authors and also evokes the universality of the tragedy which in the authors’ words “was an assault on humanity [with] implications that echo far beyond South Carolina.” \nThe Emanuel Nine (as those who died in the hate crime are now called)\, the five survivors of that night\, and the extended church family serve as models of forgiveness and Christian values within this book that initially situates the reader into the midst of the dreadful experience. From there\, the authors explore such subjects as the lives of the nine who died\, the historical background of racial unrest in the South and Charleston in particular\, the origin and revolutionary ideas of the African Methodist Episopal Church (AME)\, and the meaning of forgiveness. Barham was a long way from home when the tragedy happened. \nOn November 13\, 2015\, the singer-songwriter—raised in a small North Carolina town called Reidsville—was in the middle of his fourth European tour with American Aquarium\, the rising alt-country act he’d led for nearly a decade. They were in Belgium\, less than two hours from Paris\, when bad news began to arrive: a series of terrorist attacks\, including one in a rock club\, had left more than 100 dead. Family members\, friends\, and the fans American Aquarium had amassed from so many years on the road immediately reached out\, making sure the band had been far away. \n“The onslaught of text messages\, voicemails and everything that came in the next day sparked something in me\,” Barham remembers. “In the next two days\, the entire record was written.” \nThe record he’s talking about is Rockingham\, Barham’s remarkable and intensely personal solo debut. Not long after the wave of well wishes had passed\, Barham found himself piecing together composites of people he’d known since childhood\, of those folks and places who had impacted his life in fundamental ways. He sang into his cell phone and scribbled in notebooks\, stealing away for quiet moments in order to put the melodies and characters floating through his mind into song. \nThe shock of the moment and the distance from home seemed to give Barham a crucial perspective on the moments and circumstances that had helped shape him. Wolves\, American Aquarium’s much-lauded 2015 breakthrough\, had contained Barham’s most honest\, vulnerable statements to date. But these songs took the next step\, allowing Barham to share stories about those around him. In “O’Lover\,” he portrays a hard-working farmer forced to make some desperate decisions to support the ones he loves. In “Reidsville\,” named for the place he’d called his home until relocating to North Carolina’s capital\, he immortalized beautiful\, sweet\, doomed souls\, stuck in love in the sort of small towns that are disintegrating all across America. You needn’t have been to Reidsville to recognize these elegantly written\, expertly realized protagonists. \n“This is the first record I’ve ever made that’s not autobiographical—it’s fictional narrative in a very real place\,” Barham says. “These songs are human condition stories set in my hometown\, Reidsville.” \nBarham made these songs his new priority. Not long after he returned stateside\, he asked Bradley Cook\, the musician and mentor who had co-produced Wolves\, to hear them. By afternoon’s end\, they had hatched the plan to make Rockingham. Two months later\, on January 31\, Barham returned from another American Aquarium tour. \nOn Monday\, he and the band he’d built to record Rockingham—himself\, Cook\, Cook’s brother and multi-instrumentalist Phil Cook\, drummer Kyle Keegan\, American Aquarium standbys Ryan Johnson and Whit Wright—met for the first time. On Tuesday and Wednesday\, they rehearsed. And on Thursday and Friday\, they cut all eight songs at Durham’s Overdub Lane. They mixed the results over the weekend\, between the sold-out hometown shows and various festivities of American Aquarium’s annual pilgrimage\, Roadtrip to Raleigh. The whirlwind kept the songs simple and the recordings human\, reflecting a reality much bigger and less perfect than the vacuum of a recording studio. \nThese tunes\, after all\, didn’t need much tampering. Rockingham puts its scenes and scenarios front and center\, the beautiful grain and twang of Barham’s voice bringing it all to life. He limns lifelong romance and instantaneous tragedy during the paradoxically heartbreaking\, heart-mending “Unfortunate Kind” and details the disappointments and dreams of the blue-collar laborer with “American Tobacco Company.” With its acoustic guitars and pealing organs\, ragged vocals and rugged characters\, Rockingham is a stunning\, personal portrait of small-town America\, easily identifiable and familiar. \nFor the album’s sole autobiographical moment\, Barham\, now happily married and sober\, penned a letter of sound advice and Southern attitude to his daughter-to-be\, “Madeline.” It’s too personal to fall under a roots-rock purview\, too singular to be swallowed by a larger situation. Like all of Rockingham\, it’s not the sound of Barham stepping away from American Aquarium but instead stepping confidently into the thoughts\, stories\, and feelings of his own thirty years. \n“This is just an outlet for a songwriter. It’s me being able to do something different. This is like people who love their jobs\, picking up hobbies\,” says Barham\, “This is an exercise for myself.” \nFor nearly a decade\, American Aquarium have spent the majority of their days on the road\, burning through a sprawl of highways during the day and playing hours of raw\, rootsy rock & roll at night. Sometimes\, the job is a grind. Most times\, it’s a blessing. American Aquarium’s songs\, filled with biographical lyrics about last calls\, lost love and long horizons\, have always explored both sides of that divide. For every drunken night at the bar\, there’s a hangover in the morning. For every new relationship\, there’s the chance of a broken heart. It’s that kind of honesty — that sort of balance — that makes the band’s newest album\, Wolves\, their strongest release to date. \nAnd it nearly didn’t happen. When American Aquarium traveled to Muscle Shoals to record Burn.Flicker.Die. in 2012\, they were convinced the album would be their last. Even though they had enlisted the help of award-winning singer-songwriter Jason Isbell to produce the sessions\, they were exhausted; weathered and whittled to the bone by more than a half-decade of heavy partying and heavier touring. To a small group of diehard fans\, they were absolute rockstars… but being rockstars to a cult audience doesn’t always put food on your table or gas in your tank. BJ Barham\, the band’s frontman\, was so poor that he’d been living out of a storage unit for months\, unable to afford an apartment in the band’s hometown of Raleigh\, North Carolina. \nClearly\, something had to give. Maybe it was time to make one final album — an album about failure\, desperation and disillusionment — and then throw in the towel. \nAs fate would have it\, Burn.Flicker.Die. eventually proved itself to be the band’s most successful release to date. Critics loved it. Fans rallied behind it. Fast forward 2 years and almost 500 shows later\, the band has travelled the world\, quadrupled their fan base and reinvented their passion for the road. When the time came to record another album in June 2014\, it only made sense to do something that celebrated survival rather than failure. \nThe result? Wolves\, which Barham describes as “the sound of a band firing on all cylinders”. Produced by Megafaun’s Brad Cook and recorded during a 20-day stay at Echo Mountain Studios in Asheville\, NC\, Wolves was funded entirely by American Aquarium’s diehard fanbase. The album’s 10 tracks represent a departure from the band’s signature twang. Instead drawing more from the alternative rock sound that inspired their name almost a decade ago. Wolves blends the twang of the pedal steel with the dark\, dirty swirl of two electric guitars\, creating a sound that’s fit for the roadhouse\, the honky tonk and the dive bar. Barham has certainly spent time in all three\, but now looks to brighter horizons in these new songs. \n“I’ve always written about being the drunk guy at the bar at 2 a.m.\,” he admits. “I’ve written about the pick-up lines and the drinking and the drugs. This record is more personal than that. It’s a coming of age record.” \nIt’s also a record that reaffirms his faith in American Aquarium\, a band he started in 2006. Since that time\, more than 25 musicians have passed through the group’s ranks. In recent years though\, things have felt a lot more stable. Ryan Johnson\, Bill Corbin\, Whit Wright\, Kevin McClain and the newest addition\, Colin Dimeo\, round out the group\, turning Barham’s songs into fiery\, fleshed-out compositions. \nWith Wolves\, which hit stores in early 2015\, American Aquarium is literally bigger and better. \n“We were legitimized by Burn.Flicker.Die.\,” Barham says. “That album was a breakup record with the road. DESCRIPTION:The Royal Oak Foundation Presents: A Feast of Treasures and Curiosities- The Collections at Windsor Castle by the Librarian Emeritus of Windsor Castle. \nFor tickets\, please click here. \nOliver Everett\nLibrarian Emeritus\, Royal Library\, Windsor Castle \nIn addition to his British academic credentials from Cambridge University and the London School of Economics\, Oliver Everett spent a year studying at Western Reserve Academy in Ohio and later attended Tufts University where he received an M.A. in International Relations. \nWhile in America\, he developed a great love of baseball and later formed a team at Windsor Castle. \nHe enjoyed a long career in British government service\, including diplomatic postings in New Delhi and Madrid. He later served as Assistant Private Secretary to HRH The Prince of Wales and as Private Secretary to HRH the late Princess of Wales. \nHe assumed his position of Librarian\, Windsor Castle and Assistant Keeper of the Queen’s Archives in 1985 and retired in 2002. He wrote the official Windsor Castle guidebook and contributed to several books on the Royal Collection. \nHe is now Librarian Emeritus\, Windsor Castle and regularly lectures in the UK and around the world. \n“A Feast of Treasures and Curiosities”: The Collections at Windsor Castle” \nWindsor Castle is the oldest and largest continuously occupied castle in the world. It has been modified throughout its 900 year history to reflect the ambitions and styles of the monarchy\, evolving from an impregnable fortress into a royal country residence. It is said to be the Queen’s favorite home; one she regularly uses for spectacular state occasions. \nHoused within the walls of the Castle is the Royal Library\, described as “a feast of treasures and curiosities.” The Library occupies three rooms\, originally built for Queen Elizabeth I\, King Henry VII and King Charles II. \nIt is more a remarkable museum of the British monarchy than a traditional library. The Library has one of the world’s finest collections of Old Master Drawings\, including the largest group of drawings by Leonardo da Vinci\, as well as fans\, clocks\, jewelry\, miniatures\, over 4\,500 military maps and documents\, and even the shirt in which King Charles I was executed. \nFine bindings\, manuscripts and rare books include the Mainz Psalter\, 1457; the Sobieski Book of Hours\, 1420; and annotated copies of books by Sir Walter Scott and Benjamin Disraeli. \nOliver Everett\, Librarian Emeritus for the Royal Library\, Windsor Castle\, will discuss many of these remarkable objects\, some usually only seen by Her Majesty\, her guests and visiting scholars.
