SUMMARY:CLS Book Club: Clementine
DESCRIPTION:CLS Book Club- Clementine by Sonia Purnell \nA long-overdue tribute to the extraordinary woman behind Winston Churchill. \nBy Winston Churchill’s own admission\, victory in the Second World War would have been “impossible without her.” Until now\, however\, the only existing biography of Churchill’s wife\, Clementine\, was written by her daughter. Sonia Purnell finally gives Clementine her due with a deeply researched account that tells her life story\, revealing how she was instrumental in softening FDR’s initial dislike of her husband and paving the way for Britain’s close relationship with America. It also provides a surprising account of her relationship with Eleanor Roosevelt and their differing approaches to the war effort. \nBorn into impecunious aristocracy\, the young Clementine was the target of cruel snobbery. Many wondered why Winston married her\, but their marriage proved to be an exceptional partnership. Beautiful and intelligent\, but driven by her own insecurities\, she made his career her mission. Any real consideration of Winston Churchill is incomplete without an understanding of their relationship\, andClementine is both the first real biography of this remarkable woman and a fascinating look inside their private world. \n“Sonia Purnell has at long last given Clementine Churchill the biography she deserves. Sensitive yet clear-eyed\, Clementine tells the fascinating story of a complex woman struggling to maintain her own identity while serving as the conscience and principal adviser to one of the most important figures in history.” –Lynn Olson\, bestselling author of Citizens of London

SUMMARY:Music at the Library: Tuffus Zimbabwe and John Tecklenburg
DESCRIPTION:The great-grandson of a visionary and leader comes home and performs with the Mayor! \nFor tickets\, please click here or call (843) 723-9912. \n Tuffus Zimbabwe is bringing a rich musical tradition back to the Lowcountry\, where it all began under the leadership of his great-grandfather\, Rev. Daniel Joseph Jenkins\, founder of Jenkins Orphanage\, and the world famous Jenkins Orphanage Band. Please join us as welcome this masterful arranger and musician back to the cradle of jazz. This historic event will feature the SNL pianist Zimbabwe and Mayor John Tecklenburg. \nThis Spoleto Festival USA artist sold out all of his 2016 season concerts\, but you’re getting another opportunity to see his brilliance. Buy your tickets while you can. \nTUFFUS ZIMBABWE is a pianist and composer from the Roxbury area of the city of Boston. He comes from a rich background of artists and musicians\, most notably the musical genius Edmund Jenkins. Edmund Jenkins was a brilliant composer and performer in the genres of Jazz and Classical music from the early 1900s. He was internationally renowned and is remembered for his significant contributions to the development of jazz in the United States\, via Charleston\, South Carolina. Tuffus\, a versatile composer and master musician in his own right\, started piano lessons at the early age of five. His father\, a teacher\, and his mother\, a visual artist\, both armed with knowledge of their rich musical heritage\, made it a point to provide Tuffus with substantial musical exposure. Tuffus began by studying classical piano\, which he did for roughly two decades. At the age of 12 he explored gospel music at a local Roxbury church where he started playing piano with the men’s choir. \nIn his early teens\, Tuffus joined Berklee College of Music’s City Music Program\, where he began his formal training in jazz. Here is where his skills and talents as a musician matured. The program offered him a laboratory to develop his compositions and a forum to perform with his peers. At eighteen\, Tuffus received the prestigious Walter Beasley Award\, won the song writing competition at Berklee’s Five Week Summer Program\, and was subsequently awarded the full-tuition “City Music Continuing Scholarship” to study in Berklee’s undergraduate program (class of ‘05). Here he dual-majored in Music Business and Film Scoring while engaging in extensive studies in composition and performance. \nTuffus’ composition skills landed him a spot on Liz Walker’s CBS-TV morning show where he performed his original “African Breeze” with the Tuffus Zimbabwe Group. One of his original compositions was already being used weekly as the theme for this show. \nIn 2007 Tuffus continued his education\, earning his Master of Music degree in Jazz Studies from New York University (’09) . At NYU\, he studied with master musicians such as Stefon Harris and Gil Goldstein to name a few. While studying with these artists contributed to Tuffus’ artistic and professional development\, attending NYU opened up a new city of possibilities for Tuffus and allowed him another outlet for his creativity and compositions. Two of his works were selected for NYU’s State Orphans’ Film Symposium (’09) and NYU Doctor Radio. Tuffus was also honored as a recipient of the prestigious Barney Josephson Award for Excellence in Jazz. Tuffus Zimbabwe has maintained an active practice as a music educator\, teaching for two years at NYU as Jazz Studies adjunct faculty\, as well as in numerous youth programs including the Berklee City Music Program\, Hamilton/Garret Music & Arts Academy\, and presently the Piano Outreach of New York (PONY). \nTuffus currently works as a keyboardist in the Saturday Night Live Band on NBC. He also works in a number of bands such as Ron Ried’s “Sun Steel” band and Jovol Bell’s “Reality”. Tuffus has performed in several festivals and venues across the United States.  (www.sonicbirds.com)

SUMMARY:Speaker Series: WE ARE CHARLESTON
DESCRIPTION:Speaker Series: WE ARE CHARLESTON \nRSVP to (843) 723-9912 or mstokenberry@charlestonlibrarysociety.org \nThe arresting book\, We Are Charleston\, opens with the image of assailant Dylann Roof’shandgun he used to kill nine people at Mother Emanuel AME Church on June 17\, 2015\, but also with the truth of people uniting in love and support in their efforts to relieve pain and challenge the wrongs of racism. I hope you will have interest hosting an event in relation to this deeply meaningful exploration by three remarkable authors\, South Carolina Poet Laureate Marjory Wentworth\, award-winning journalist Emanuel Church Herb Frazier\, and College of Charleston history professor Dr. Bernard Edward Powers. The title\, We Are Charleston (Thomas Nelson imprint\, W Publishing Group\, June 2016)\, suggests the accumulated knowledge and talent among these three diverse authors and also evokes the universality of the tragedy which in the authors’ words “was an assault on humanity [with] implications that echo far beyond South Carolina.” \nThe Emanuel Nine (as those who died in the hate crime are now called)\, the five survivors of that night\, and the extended church family serve as models of forgiveness and Christian values within this book that initially situates the reader into the midst of the dreadful experience. From there\, the authors explore such subjects as the lives of the nine who died\, the historical background of racial unrest in the South and Charleston in particular\, the origin and revolutionary ideas of the African Methodist Episopal Church (AME)\, and the meaning of forgiveness. The closing chapter stirs the reader with its examination of the many positive forces and activity currently taking place in hopes of Charleston’s becoming a model for racial reconciliation. \nWe Are Charleston is a book for our nation\, a book we must read. It makes us aware of the devastating consequences of humanity gone awry in the form of one young man blinded by intense hatred\, yet it also awakens us to the gift of grace and goodness in humanity.

SUMMARY:An Evening with BJ Barham
DESCRIPTION:BJ Barham’s solo album ROCKINGHAM is debuting on August 19th.  We are thrilled to have his tour stop by the Library Society for a concert! \nCome celebrate a special evening at an amazingly beautiful venue\, The Charleston Library Society\, with An Evening with BJ Barham of American Aquarium. \n$15 – ADV | $20 – DOS \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vy9Lmh211dw \nB.J. Barham was a long way from home when the tragedy happened. \nOn November 13\, 2015\, the singer-songwriter—raised in a small North Carolina town called Reidsville—was in the middle of his fourth European tour with American Aquarium\, the rising alt-country act he’d led for nearly a decade. They were in Belgium\, less than two hours from Paris\, when bad news began to arrive: a series of terrorist attacks\, including one in a rock club\, had left more than 100 dead. Family members\, friends\, and the fans American Aquarium had amassed from so many years on the road immediately reached out\, making sure the band had been far away. \n“The onslaught of text messages\, voicemails and everything that came in the next day sparked something in me\,” Barham remembers. “In the next two days\, the entire record was written.” \nThe record he’s talking about is Rockingham\, Barham’s remarkable and intensely personal solo debut. Not long after the wave of well wishes had passed\, Barham found himself piecing together composites of people he’d known since childhood\, of those folks and places who had impacted his life in fundamental ways. He sang into his cell phone and scribbled in notebooks\, stealing away for quiet moments in order to put the melodies and characters floating through his mind into song. \nThe shock of the moment and the distance from home seemed to give Barham a crucial perspective on the moments and circumstances that had helped shape him. Wolves\, American Aquarium’s much-lauded 2015 breakthrough\, had contained Barham’s most honest\, vulnerable statements to date. But these songs took the next step\, allowing Barham to share stories about those around him. In “O’Lover\,” he portrays a hard-working farmer forced to make some desperate decisions to support the ones he loves. In “Reidsville\,” named for the place he’d called his home until relocating to North Carolina’s capital\, he immortalized beautiful\, sweet\, doomed souls\, stuck in love in the sort of small towns that are disintegrating all across America. You needn’t have been to Reidsville to recognize these elegantly written\, expertly realized protagonists. \n“This is the first record I’ve ever made that’s not autobiographical—it’s fictional narrative in a very real place\,” Barham says. “These songs are human condition stories set in my hometown\, Reidsville.” \nBarham made these songs his new priority. Not long after he returned stateside\, he asked Bradley Cook\, the musician and mentor who had co-produced Wolves\, to hear them. By afternoon’s end\, they had hatched the plan to make Rockingham. Two months later\, on January 31\, Barham returned from another American Aquarium tour. \nOn Monday\, he and the band he’d built to record Rockingham—himself\, Cook\, Cook’s brother and multi-instrumentalist Phil Cook\, drummer Kyle Keegan\, American Aquarium standbys Ryan Johnson and Whit Wright—met for the first time. On Tuesday and Wednesday\, they rehearsed. And on Thursday and Friday\, they cut all eight songs at Durham’s Overdub Lane. They mixed the results over the weekend\, between the sold-out hometown shows and various festivities of American Aquarium’s annual pilgrimage\, Roadtrip to Raleigh. The whirlwind kept the songs simple and the recordings human\, reflecting a reality much bigger and less perfect than the vacuum of a recording studio. \nThese tunes\, after all\, didn’t need much tampering. Rockingham puts its scenes and scenarios front and center\, the beautiful grain and twang of Barham’s voice bringing it all to life. He limns lifelong romance and instantaneous tragedy during the paradoxically heartbreaking\, heart-mending “Unfortunate Kind” and details the disappointments and dreams of the blue-collar laborer with “American Tobacco Company.” With its acoustic guitars and pealing organs\, ragged vocals and rugged characters\, Rockingham is a stunning\, personal portrait of small-town America\, easily identifiable and familiar. \nFor the album’s sole autobiographical moment\, Barham\, now happily married and sober\, penned a letter of sound advice and Southern attitude to his daughter-to-be\, “Madeline.” It’s too personal to fall under a roots-rock purview\, too singular to be swallowed by a larger situation. Like all of Rockingham\, it’s not the sound of Barham stepping away from American Aquarium but instead stepping confidently into the thoughts\, stories\, and feelings of his own thirty years. \n“This is just an outlet for a songwriter. It’s me being able to do something different. This is like people who love their jobs\, picking up hobbies\,” says Barham\, “This is an exercise for myself.” \nFor nearly a decade\, American Aquarium have spent the majority of their days on the road\, burning through a sprawl of highways during the day and playing hours of raw\, rootsy rock & roll at night. Sometimes\, the job is a grind. Most times\, it’s a blessing. American Aquarium’s songs\, filled with biographical lyrics about last calls\, lost love and long horizons\, have always explored both sides of that divide. For every drunken night at the bar\, there’s a hangover in the morning. For every new relationship\, there’s the chance of a broken heart. It’s that kind of honesty — that sort of balance — that makes the band’s newest album\, Wolves\, their strongest release to date. \nAnd it nearly didn’t happen. When American Aquarium traveled to Muscle Shoals to record Burn.Flicker.Die. in 2012\, they were convinced the album would be their last. Even though they had enlisted the help of award-winning singer-songwriter Jason Isbell to produce the sessions\, they were exhausted; weathered and whittled to the bone by more than a half-decade of heavy partying and heavier touring. To a small group of diehard fans\, they were absolute rockstars… but being rockstars to a cult audience doesn’t always put food on your table or gas in your tank. BJ Barham\, the band’s frontman\, was so poor that he’d been living out of a storage unit for months\, unable to afford an apartment in the band’s hometown of Raleigh\, North Carolina. \nClearly\, something had to give. Maybe it was time to make one final album — an album about failure\, desperation and disillusionment — and then throw in the towel. \nAs fate would have it\, Burn.Flicker.Die. eventually proved itself to be the band’s most successful release to date. Critics loved it. Fans rallied behind it. Fast forward 2 years and almost 500 shows later\, the band has travelled the world\, quadrupled their fan base and reinvented their passion for the road. When the time came to record another album in June 2014\, it only made sense to do something that celebrated survival rather than failure. \nThe result? Wolves\, which Barham describes as “the sound of a band firing on all cylinders”. Produced by Megafaun’s Brad Cook and recorded during a 20-day stay at Echo Mountain Studios in Asheville\, NC\, Wolves was funded entirely by American Aquarium’s diehard fanbase. The album’s 10 tracks represent a departure from the band’s signature twang. Instead drawing more from the alternative rock sound that inspired their name almost a decade ago. Wolves blends the twang of the pedal steel with the dark\, dirty swirl of two electric guitars\, creating a sound that’s fit for the roadhouse\, the honky tonk and the dive bar. Barham has certainly spent time in all three\, but now looks to brighter horizons in these new songs. \n“I’ve always written about being the drunk guy at the bar at 2 a.m.\,” he admits. “I’ve written about the pick-up lines and the drinking and the drugs. This record is more personal than that. It’s a coming of age record.” \nIt’s also a record that reaffirms his faith in American Aquarium\, a band he started in 2006. Since that time\, more than 25 musicians have passed through the group’s ranks. In recent years though\, things have felt a lot more stable. Ryan Johnson\, Bill Corbin\, Whit Wright\, Kevin McClain and the newest addition\, Colin Dimeo\, round out the group\, turning Barham’s songs into fiery\, fleshed-out compositions. \nWith Wolves\, which hit stores in early 2015\, American Aquarium is literally bigger and better. \n“We were legitimized by Burn.Flicker.Die.\,” Barham says. “That album was a breakup record with the road. It basically said\, ‘This is our last album\, this is why we’re quitting\, and hey\, thanks for the memories.’ Fast-forward\, though\, and we’ve got a new record that says\, ‘We ain’t done yet.’” \nFor tickets\, please click here.

DESCRIPTION:Painting the Southern Coast: The Art of West Fraser is a stunning collection of the works of West Fraser\, one of the nation’s most respected painters of representational art. A mastery of his medium and the scope of work ensure his place in Southern art history. SUMMARY:Speaker Series: Lauren Collins
DESCRIPTION:RSVP to mstokenberry@charlestonlibrarysociety.org or call (843) 723-9912 \nWHEN IN FRENCH: Love in a Second Language– A staff writer at the New Yorker since 2008\, Collins has profiled April Bloomfield and the reinvention of the gastropub\, Michelle Obama at the height of the 2008 election\, the graffiti artist Banksy\, and Gérard Depardieu. In her first book\, Collins turns her unwavering eye on herself\, and the result is a most delightful\, singular memoir—replete with linguistics\, semantics\, history\, and plenty of French—that is\, at its heart\, a love story. \nA language barrier is no match for love. Collins discovered this firsthand when\, in her early thirties\, she moved to London and fell for a Frenchman named Olivier—a surprising turn of events for someone who didn’t have a passport until she was in college. But what does it mean to love someone in a second language\, Collins wonders\, as her relationship with Olivier continues to grow entirely in English. Are there things she doesn’t understand about Olivier\, having never spoken to him in his native tongue? Does “I love you” even mean the same thing as “je t’aime”? When the couple\, newly married\, relocates to Francophone Geneva\, Collins—fearful of one day becoming “a Borat of a mother” who doesn’t understand her own kids—decides to answer her questions for herself by learning French. \nWHEN IN FRENCH is a laugh-out-loud funny and surprising memoir about the lengths we go to for love\, as well as an exploration across culture and history into how we learn languages—and what they say about who we are. Collins grapples with the complexities of the French language\, enduring excruciating role-playing games with her classmates at a Swiss language school and accidentally telling her mother-in-law that she’s given birth to a coffee machine. In learning French\, Collins must wrestle with the very nature of French identity and society\, which is a far cry from life back home in North Carolina. Plumbing the mysterious depths of humanity’s many forms of language\, Collins describes with great style and wicked humor the frustrations\, embarrassments\, surprises\, and\, finally\, joys of learning—and living in—French. \nIt is a rare book that combines humor and knowledge with the skill and charm on display by Collins. We promise you’ll turn each page with a smile. WHEN IN FRENCH is a tour de force\, and I very much hope you will keep it in mind for your plans this fall.

This fun instrumental music requires virtosic playing combined with quick improvisations. Choro is considered a precurser to bossa nova and other Brazlian popular styles. \nSee this link for more information on choro music:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Choro \nAbout our band’s name:\nPorto Seguro (which means safe harbor)\, is a city located in Bahia state\, Brazil; It was the first place that Portuguese explorers navigators landed in what is now the country of Brazil.

SUMMARY:Speaker Series: Harry Farthing in Conversation with John Huey
DESCRIPTION:Come to the Charleston Library Society and  celebrate the release of Harry Farthings action-packed debut thriller SUMMIT: A NOVEL. \nFor tickets\, call 843-723-9912 or click here. \nIn the autumn of 1938 Germanys Reichsführer\, Heinrich Himmler\, is growing frustrated at the British using their regional power in India to block passage of an SS expedition to Tibet. Determined to spite them\, he plots to steal something the British hold dear and have failed for the seventh time that spring to achieve  a first summit of Mount Everest.   Seventy years later\, seasoned mountain guide Neil Quinn’s ninth visit to the top of the worlds highest mountain in the charge of the sixteen-year old son of a Long Island billionaire begins to unravel. As a desperate fight for their lives begins in the freezing air high above Tibet\, Quinn stumbles across a clue to a story that questions everything he thinks he knows about the great mountain.   When the bitter aftermath of Quinns disastrous climb turns to violent tragedy in Kathmandu\, his discovery pushes him into a relentless journey that takes him from the dangerous heights of Everest to the equally treacherous margins of a new Europe where history hungers to repeat itself.   Amidst a rich and diverse cast of characters\, each with their own reason to possess the mystery of his discovery\, Neil Quinn has to fight\, increasingly desperately\, for order and the truth. In doing so\, he reveals an older story of man and mountain to its shocking conclusion. \nHARRY FARTHING is an Englishman born in 1964 in Lynton\, North Devon\, and raised in the West Country. From 1987\, he enjoyed a successful career with one of the world’s largest commercial real estate consultancies. During this period\, he lived and worked in the City of London\, Lisbon-Portugal\, and Milan-Italy\, becoming Managing Director of the company’s Italian operations and European Board Director with responsibility for activities in Abu Dhabi\, Dubai\, Bahrain and Qatar. In 2010\, he took early retirement to move with his American wife to Charleston\, South Carolina\, where he resides today.\nFarthing has had a lifelong interest in exploration\, archaeology and world history\, both published and alternate. He is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and has travelled widely to extreme environments such as the Sahara Desert\, the Himalaya\, the Amazon and the Arctic North. An experienced mountaineer\, he has climbed Mt Blanc and the Matterhorn in the Alps\, Mt McKinley in Alaska\, Shishapangma\, the highest mountain in Tibet\, and on Mount Everest itself. In 2010 he successfully led all thirteen members of a charity climb to the summit of Kilimanjaro in Africa. In 2011 he made a journey across North America by BMW Motorcycle that linked the Atlantic\, Arctic and Pacific Oceans and travelled 2000 miles of unpaved roads above the 60th Parallel. That trip was the latest in a series of long motorcycle journeys that started with a ride from the UK to the Moroccan Sahara when he was just nineteen. An accomplished public speaker\, he has also raised substantial funds for charity through his climbing.\nSummit\, his debut novel\, marries his knowledge of world travel\, adventure sports\, mountaineering and modern history to create a gripping action story that is both compelling and thought provoking.

SUMMARY:Speaker Series: Jack Weatherford
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we welcome New York Time Bestselling Author\, Jack Weatherford as he speaks about his new book\, GENGHIS KHAN AND THE QUEST FOR GOD: How the World’s Greatest Conqueror Gave Us Religious Freedom \nThis event is free for members and $10 for nonmembers. \nFor tickets\, call 843-723-9912 or click here.  \nEven history’s most famous conqueror had a soft side. An acclaimed expert on Mongolia\, Weatherford (The Secret History of the Mongol Queens: How the Daughters of Genghis Khan Rescued His Empire\, 2010\, etc.) introduces readers to a Genghis Khan (c. 1162-1227) not discussed in most history books. Though he was unquestionably a ruthless and violent conqueror\, the author wants readers to see his subject as a thoughtful leader marked by extraordinary forethought and wisdom\, paired with a religious personality. AmongWeatherford’s most startling revelations is that\, centuries before John Locke and similar thinkers\, Genghis Khan believed in and promoted religious tolerance within his great empire. Early in the book\, the author does an admirable job explaining the physically harsh and brutal life into which Temujin—the name of the future Khan—was born and raised. Readers may grow to feel empathy for the young and unlikely future ruler\, until fratricide and other acts of violence quickly taint his image. Founding the nation of Mongolia in 1206 with 1 million followers\, Genghis Khan showed early wisdom in deciding to bring the written word to his empire\, and he set about having scribes put the Mongolian spoken language into writing. Military success led to vastly increased landholding\, and his empire grew. Weatherford details his conquest of China and then of Muslim lands to the west. Throughout\, Genghis Khan considered himself “the whip of heaven\,” chosen to bring order and justice to a troubled world. This included a solemn religious duty: “As heaven’s representative on earth\, he felt it was his duty to examine the religions of the people he had conquered to determine what they were doing incorrectly and to correct their errors.” As he aged\, however\, Genghis Khan transformed from judge to student\, as he spent more time learning about the religions of his conquered lands and incorporating their finest points into his administration and lawmaking. An intriguing\, eye-opening spiritual biography.

SUMMARY:SOLD OUT: Charleston Takes on Sea Level Rise: Strategies\, Projects\, Funding & Progress
DESCRIPTION:SOLD OUT \nMonday\, November 14\, 2016 \n6:00pm -8:00pm \nFree to the public. To RSVP\, please call (843) 723-9912 or email mstokenberry@charlestonlibrarysociety.org \nIt is widely understood that the sea level is rising at an accelerating rate\, posing a serious threat to the Charleston area.  If we do forget\, events like Hurricane Matthew and regular tidal flooding in the streets remind us. The above image\, from NOAA’s Sea Level Rise Viewer\, models what the flooding impacts on the Charleston peninsula will be with three feet of sea level rise. City planning currently projects a 1.5 to 2.5 foot rise within the next 50 years.  The question before us is not whether sea level rise is occurring but what actions are being taken to prepare for and combat its effects. \n This event\, sponsored by the League of Women Voters of the Charleston Area partnering with S.C. Sea Grant Consortium\, will explore: \n•     What has been\, is being\, and will be done? \n•     How will the necessary actions be funded? \n•     Will these efforts be enough? \n•     How can the public help? \nThe presenters are three professionals all of whom are close to the action in Charleston and are instrumental members of the Charleston Resilience Network. \nThe presenters will be \n•    Elizabeth Fly\, Ph.D.\, Coastal Climate Extension Specialist\, S.C. Sea Grant Consortium; \n•    Laura Cabiness\, P.E.I.\, Director\, Public Service Department\, City of Charleston; and \n•    Carolee Williams\, AICP\, of the City of Charleston\, Project Manager\, Planning\, Preservation\, and Sustainability\, City of Charleston. \nElizabeth Fly\, Ph.D.\, is a coastal climate extension specialist with S.C. Sea Grant Consortium and the Carolinas Integrated Sciences and Assessments program. She provides outreach and assistance to communities dealing with weather and climate hazards and adaptation\, and she works with Charleston Resilience Coalition (CRN). Resilience is the ability of a community to prepare for\, withstand\, and bounce back from disasters. The CRN\, created in 2014\, includes public and private sector organizations such as the City of Charleston\, DHEC-OCRM\, Charleston County\, BCD COG\, Charleston Water System\, SC Sea Grant Consortium\, SCANA\, and the College of Charleston.  Liz will also help administer the recent half-million dollar NOAA grant to SC Sea Grant Consortium on behalf of the CRN; the funds will be used specifically to develop strong\, localized flooding models\, which are essential to pin-pointing needed infrastructure improvements. \nLaura Cabiness\, P.E.\, is the City of Charleston’s director of public service. In addition to waste collection\, streets and sidewalks maintenance\, and building inspections\, Public Service is in charge of storm drainage and flood control.  This includes the implementation of multi-million dollar drainage projects that have been gradually being completed over the past three decades. In addition\, Laura is a key member involved in the development of the City’s Sea Level Rise Strategy\, an overall plan adopted by the City Council last year. \nCarolee Williams\, AICP\, is the City’s project manager for planning\, preservation\, and sustainability.  A member of the team that developed the City’s Sea Level Rise Strategy\, Carolee works collaboratively with Charleston’s Emergency Management\, Public Service\, and GIS directors on its implementation. She also coordinated the City’s application for the 100 Resilient Cities competition and is a representative on the National Academies of Sciences Resilient America Roundtable\, for which the City of Charleston is a pilot city.  She will lead her department in reviewing new City plans and potential amendments to the City’s zoning ordinances in the light of changes needed given the Sea Level Rise Strategy. \nThe program will be facilitated by Susan Lovelace\, a trained moderator. \nSusan Lovelace\, Ph.D.\, is currently the assistant director for development and extension at the S.C. Sea Grant Consortium\, a state agency which serves to bring people together to identify\, discuss\, generate\, study\, and share information about our coastal and ocean environment and its economic\, environmental\, and social importance to the state.  The Consortium’s work includes community resilience and adaptation to changing climate\, flooding and storms\, green infrastructure and natural resource planning and protection\, nature-based tourism\, wise use and conservation of living marine resources and coastal water resources. Susan is leading research to better understand how people learn about their environment\, engage with resource managers and shape public policy to protect their environment and well-being.  Susan also teaches environmental sciences and guides students in their Masters of Environmental Studies research at the College of Charleston. \nFor more information and resource material\, please visit the LWVCA webpage \nThe League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan organization that encourages informal and active participation in government. Membership is open to men and women of all ages.
