SUMMARY:Ukraine // What's At Stake and What We Need to Know
DESCRIPTION:The Library Society is honored to welcome Jim Hake\, CEO and Founder of Spirit of America\, for a front lines perspective on the war in Ukraine. \nSince Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2014\, Spirit of America has been actively helping Ukraine defend its freedom and democracy against Russia’s aggression. Having visited Ukraine nine times since then\, Jim will share what’s at stake and how American citizens are defending our values in the face of brutal aggression not seen since World War II. \nWorking closely with the US military\, Spirit of America has delivered 800+ tons of protective\, nonlethal aid — surveillance drones\, communications gear\, vehicles\, body armor\, helmets\, medical supplies\, food and more — to Ukrainian soldiers as well as targeted humanitarian support to civilians. As an inspirational example\, Jim will present stories of courage\, commitment and hope. His privately-funded nonprofit represents patriotism without politics and has risen to become the nation’s largest non-partisan vehicle for Americans who want to act to support our national interests and values overseas. \nJim’s recently published Wall Street Journal article explains why the outcome in Ukraine is of critical importance to the United States. \nAs longtime supporters and friends\, Col. William W. Griffen USMC (Ret’d) and Mrs. Carrie Snyder Griffen\, have generously worked to make this appearance possible for the Charleston community. \nTickets: Members – $10 // General Admission – $15 \nThis event is almost sold out! Tickets: PURCHASE HERE \nPlease send a note to ryon@charlestonlibrarysociety.org to add your name to the waitlist if this event reaches capacity and you would like to attend. We will be in touch if there are any cancellations. \nAbout Jim Hake:  \nPrior to Spirit of America Jim was an entrepreneur. He founded and sold Access Media\, one of the first internet media companies. In 2000 and 2001\, Jim was named a “Technology Pioneer” by the World Economic Forum. Jim has been honored at the Marines Evening Parade\, is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations\, and is an honorary member of the US Army Civil Affairs Regiment. He is a contributing author to Warriors and Citizens: American Views of Our Military\, a book edited by General Jim Mattis and Dr. Kori Schake. Jim has given talks at the TED conference\, the Bush School of Government\, the Aspen Institute\, the Fletcher School\, Dartmouth’s Tuck School\, SMU\, and USC. Jim received a BA with distinction in economics from Dartmouth College. Throughout college\, Jim worked as a member of Local 161 of the International Association of Ironworkers — the riggers union in Philadelphia. After Dartmouth\, Jim trained as a hovercraft pilot with the Canadian Coast Guard and was part of a team that tested the viability of commercial hovercraft transportation in southwestern Alaska. Jim earned an MBA from the Stanford University Graduate School of Business. He is the founder and president emeritus of The Friends of Arjay Miller (FOAM)\, Stanford business school’s longest-lived social institution. \nAbout Spirit of America: Jim Hake founded Spirit of America in response to the attacks of 9/11. He wanted to stand up for what America stands for. Spirit of America is a privately-funded 501c3 citizen service organization. It is the only nonprofit recognized by Congress and approved by the Department of Defense to work alongside deployed US troops and provide private assistance in support of their missions. Spirit of America is “not-neutral” – it takes the side of America and our allies\, partners\, and friends. It brings the entrepreneurial power of our citizens to support America’s security\, values\, and leadership. It fills the gaps between what is needed and what government can do. Former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General (Ret.) Joe Dunford says\, “Spirit of America represents a new capability – not just another nonprofit” that is “important to our country’s future.”

SUMMARY:Ties that Bind: New insights into America's Spanish influence
DESCRIPTION:Recently released September 2023\, La Florida presents a well-researched recount of colonial Florida. Counter to the more well known history\, in La Florida\, Professor Kevin Kokomoor explores a Spanish thread to early American history that is unfamiliar\, or rather\, unknown to most Americans. The book uncovers a Spanish influence\, not English\, which drove America’s early history or as Kokomoor suggests as “the country’s founding mythology.” \nLa Florida is an epic retelling of a pivotal period in the history of the region. The level of research is impeccable and the characters – especially the Florida-dwelling Native Americans – are wonderfully realized\, making this a highly interesting and absorbing work of historical fiction. \nTickets: Members – $10 // General Admission – $15 \nTickets: PURCHASE HERE \nAbout the Book: \nLa Florida challenges the general assumption that whatever is important or interesting about this country is a product of its English past. Dig deeper into Hispanic and Caribbean history\, and how important happenings elsewhere in the Spanish colonial world influenced the discovery and colonization of the American Southeast. Follow Spanish sailors discovering the edges of a new continent and greedy\, violent conquistadors quickly moving in to find riches\, along with Catholic missionaries on their search for religious converts. Learn how Spanish colonialism in Florida sparked the British’s plans for colonization of the continent and influenced some of the most enduring traditions of the larger Southeast.  \nAbout Prof. Kokomoor: \nKevin Kokomoor is a fourth generation Floridian who grew up in the Tampa Bay area. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s Degrees in History at the University of South Florida and his Doctorate in Early American History at Florida State University. His first academic position after graduate school was at Coastal Carolina University in Myrtle Beach\, South Carolina\, where he is currently employed. \nIn addition to La Florida\, he has also authored several articles in academic journals\, including Journal of Southern History\, Georgia Historical Quarterly\, Florida Historical Quarterly\, Journal of Sport History\, and Journal of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era. He won the Thompson Award for the best article published in Florida Historical Quarterly in 2009 and the E. Merton Coulter Award for the best article published in Georgia Historical Quarterly in 2013. In 2017 he was a Howard H. Peckham Fellow of Revolutionary America at the Clements Library at the University of Michigan. Other sources of support include the American Philosophical Society\, the David Library of the American Revolution\, Emory University\, and the University of Florida.

SUMMARY:Port Cities of the Atlantic World and Lasting Influence
DESCRIPTION:We look forward to hosting Jacob Steer-Williams for the second time in two years. He along with co-author Blake C. Scott will join us to discuss\, Port Cities of the Atlantic World\, a perfectly assembled record that traces the connections of maritime routes and those historical networks that link port cities\, and also history around the Atlantic world. From the introduction of the book we understand the importance of their focus – “The history of ports is\, in great measure\, the history of civilization.” —Frederick W . Morgan\, Ports and Harbours\, 1958.  And in bringing the study up to the 20th century in the collection’s final section\, they make the case for the lasting influence of these port cities—and Atlantic world history—on the economy\, society\, and culture of the contemporary South. \nTickets:  Members – $10 // General Admission – $15 \nTo purchase\, click here  \nor call 843.723.9912 during Box Office Hours \n(11:00AM–4:00PM\, Monday through Thursday). \nAbout the Book: \nPort Cities of the Atlantic World brings together a collection of essays that examine the centuries-long transatlantic transportation of people\, goods\, and ideas with a focus on the impact of that trade on what would become the American South. Employing a wide temporal range and broad geographic scope\, the scholars contributing to this volume call for a sea-facing history of the South\, one that connects that terrestrial region to this expansive maritime history. By bringing the study up to the 20th century in the collection’s final section\, the editors Jacob Steere-Williams and Blake C. Scott make the case for the lasting influence of these port cities—and Atlantic world history—on the economy\, society\, and culture of the contemporary South. \nAbout the Authors: \nBlake C. Scott                                                                                                                                                                                Historian\, writer\, Associate Professor of International Studies\, Blake C. Scott is interested in the diverse cultures and ecologies that connect the Caribbean with the US South. At the College of Charleston\, he teaches in the International Studies Program\, examining a range of issues related to globalization and global environmental change. He is the author of the book Unpacked: A History of Caribbean Tourism (Cornell University Press) and co-editor of Port Cities of the Atlantic World: Sea-Facing Histories of the US South (University of South Carolina Press). His articles include pieces in the journal of Environmental History\, the Journal of Tourism History\, The Huffington Post and Charleston’s Post and Courier\, among others. His research has received funding from the Fulbright Program\, the Smithsonian Institution\, the University of Texas at Austin\, and the School of Languages\, Cultures\, and World Affairs at the College of Charleston. When not in the classroom or deep into reading and writing\, you can find Dr. Scott wandering and wondering through the marshes and waterways of the Lowcountry.  \nJacob Steer-Willams                                                                                                                                                                  Professor Steere-Williams holds two professional appointments in Charleston; as Associate Professor of History at the College of Charleston\, and as President of the Waring Historical Library at MUSC. His interests are in the history of disease\, medicine\, and the environment across the Atlantic World\, including the South Carolina Lowcountry. SUMMARY:Guerilla Shakespeare: Pop-Up Theatre\, Soliloquies and Sonnets
DESCRIPTION:Along with the College of Charleston we are thrilled to celebrate the arts and culture through a shared appreciation and history of the work of William Shakespeare. Join us for a reception format and enjoy refreshments and light hors d’oeuvres while the College of Charleston Theatre performers will creatively (and perhaps spontaneously!) interject various soliloquies\, sonnets or other abbreviated rendition of Shakespeare works and performances. For Shakespeare enthusiasts\, this is an evening not to be missed. \nThis special collaboration between the Library Society’s Special Collections and Igoe Shakespeare Library along with the College of Charleston’s Department of Theatre and Dance invites the Lowcountry community to participate in the historical acclaim of Shakespeare across two unique formats throughout the year – first during this evening’s Guerilla Shakespeare\, and at the second event in June for the return of Shakespeare on the Steps. \nAs inspired by the Public Theater of NY – we agree that “Theater is an essential cultural force…art and culture belong to everyone.” \n\nTickets: $25 for CLS members and students with photo ID\, and $35 for all other guests.\nTo purchase tickets\, please click here or call 843-723-9912 \n\n

SUMMARY:Spring Symposium Part One // Rare Botanical Treasures From the Lenhardt Library at the Chicago Botanic Garden and the Charleston Library Society
DESCRIPTION:In collaboration with the Lenhardt Library\, Chicago Botanic Garden\, and The Gibbes Museum of Art\, the Charleston Library Society is so pleased to host one of our two-part Symposium Series to highlight the rare and key works of botanical illustration that can be found within our archives along with the interesting overlaps among like-minded institutions. Examples relevant to the talk will be on display. \nThursday evening\, Library Society member Ben Lenhardt will make introductory remarks followed by Leora Siegel\, Senior Director\, Lenhardt Library\, who will walk through a visual presentation that explores the work of  the renowned naturalists\, explorers and scientists who influenced the evolution of Botanical Art. She will also speak to the current state of Botanical Illustration and its revival given our current environment\, endangered species and renewed interest in an art form that we continue to cherish generations after its beginnings. \nFriday’s discussion\, led by Laura Mina\, together with Leora Siegel\, and Claudia Lane\, President of the American Society of Botanical Artists and a noted botanical artist and instructor\, will more specifically review many of the actual works held in the Library Society archives in conjunction with a private tour of the new botanical exhibition at the Gibbes Museum of Art – Rory McEwen—A New Perspective on Nature – led by Sara Arnold\, Director of Curatorial Affairs at the Gibbes of Museum of Art; Ruth Stiff\, Curator\, International Exhibitions\, Royal Botanic Gardens\, Kew; and Claudia Lane. The curated tour will focus on what influenced McEwen and others\,  how and why certain species are brought to life\, and the various methods used in the past and today. \nTICKETS: There are two ticket options for this program: CLICK HERE \nEVENING PROGRAM ONLY (Thursday\, March 7)  $30 // Admission to the lecture on Thursday\, 6:00 PM–7:00 PM. \nTWO-DAY SYMPOSIUM (Thursday\, March 7 & Friday\,  March 8) – $130 // Admission to Thursday’s lecture\, plus the extended session on Friday\, from 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM\, which will include a boxed lunch. \nAbout the Lenhardt Library and Chicago Botanic Garden: \nThe Chicago Botanic Garden opened over 50 years ago as a beautiful place to visit\, and it has matured into one of the world’s great living museums and conservation science centers boasting 28 gardens and four natural areas as well as a renowned Bonsai Collection. Its origins trace back to the Chicago Horticultural Society which was founded in 1890\, but restarted in 1943 after a period of inactivity and restored to its mission. \nThe Lenhardt Library at the Chicago Botanic Garden contains 150\,000 volumes – including a magnificent collection of approximately 2\,500 rare books and 2\,000 historic periodical titles acquired from the Massachusetts Horticultural Society in 2002 – and offers an extensive general collection of books and journals on subjects such as botany\, horticulture\, gardening\, plant conservation\, restoration ecology\, horticultural therapy\, Midwest flora\, international flora\, landscape and garden design. In addition\, the library maintains an extensive periodicals collection of about 150 print and online subscriptions to academic journals\, horticulture journals\, gardening magazines\, plant society journals\, and newsletters. \nAbout the Rory McEwen Exhibition: \nPresenting the vibrant and varied career of the renowned Scottish artist\, Rory McEwen (1932 –1982)\, this exhibition reveals McEwen’s lifelong enquiry into light and color through his remarkable paintings of plants. Bringing a modern sensibility to botanical art\, McEwen developed a distinctive style\, painting on vellum and using large empty backgrounds on which his plant portraits seem to float. Without shadows and executed in exact\, minutely accurate detail\, he recorded the imperfect and the unique\, as well as the flawless. McEwen’s work\, shown in this exhibition alongside the works of master botanical artists from the 18th\, 19th and 20th centuries\, “has had a lasting impact on the botanical art world\, where he is recognized as one of the standard-bearers of today’s renaissance in botanical painting.” \nThe Exhibition\, Rory McEwen: A New Perspective on Nature\, is presented by the Gibbes Museum of Art in association with Royal Botanic Gardens\, Kew (London) and Oak Spring Garden Foundation (Virginia); tour management by Landau Traveling Exhibitions\, Los Angeles\, CA.
