He later served as Assistant Private Secretary to HRH The Prince of Wales and as Private Secretary to HRH the late Princess of Wales. \nHe assumed his position of Librarian\, Windsor Castle and Assistant Keeper of the Queen’s Archives in 1985 and retired in 2002. He wrote the official Windsor Castle guidebook and contributed to several books on the Royal Collection. \nHe is now Librarian Emeritus\, Windsor Castle and regularly lectures in the UK and around the world. \n“A Feast of Treasures and Curiosities”: The Collections at Windsor Castle” \nWindsor Castle is the oldest and largest continuously occupied castle in the world. It has been modified throughout its 900 year history to reflect the ambitions and styles of the monarchy\, evolving from an impregnable fortress into a royal country residence. It is said to be the Queen’s favorite home; one she regularly uses for spectacular state occasions. \nHoused within the walls of the Castle is the Royal Library\, described as “a feast of treasures and curiosities.” The Library occupies three rooms\, originally built for Queen Elizabeth I\, King Henry VII and King Charles II. \nIt is more a remarkable museum of the British monarchy than a traditional library. The Library has one of the world’s finest collections of Old Master Drawings\, including the largest group of drawings by Leonardo da Vinci\, as well as fans\, clocks\, jewelry\, miniatures\, over 4\,500 military maps and documents\, and even the shirt in which King Charles I was executed. \nFine bindings\, manuscripts and rare books include the Mainz Psalter\, 1457; the Sobieski Book of Hours\, 1420; and annotated copies of books by Sir Walter Scott and Benjamin Disraeli. \nOliver Everett\, Librarian Emeritus for the Royal Library\, Windsor Castle\, will discuss many of these remarkable objects\, some usually only seen by Her Majesty\, her guests and visiting scholars.

SUMMARY:Music at the Library: Porto Seguro
DESCRIPTION:Back by very popular demand\, the Brazilian bahia music of Porto Seguro will samba its way through the Library Society’s doors. You won’t be able to stay in your seats as the music and tempo of this local band will have you moving. Don’t miss out on the return of a highlight from last season for this encore performance. \nFor tickets\, call 843-723-9912 or click here \nPorto Seguro plays instrumental music from Brazil including choro and bossa nova. It’s fun\, laid back\, rhythmic\, soulful and great music to share with friends! \nChoro music developed in Brazil in the early to mid 20th century and has some parallels to American ragtime. This fun instrumental music requires virtosic playing combined with quick improvisations. It melds European and African influences into a distinctivly Brazilian combination of up-beat melodies backed up with a syncopated vibe that is at once both joyful and full of soul. Choro is considered a precurser to bossa nova and other Brazlian popular styles. \nSee this link for more information on choro music:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Choro \nAbout our band’s name:\nPorto Seguro (which means safe harbor)\, is a city located in Bahia state\, Brazil; It was the first place that Portuguese explorers navigators landed in what is now the country of Brazil.

SUMMARY:CLS Book Club: My Name is Lucy Barton
DESCRIPTION:CLS Book Club season has returned! We hope everyone had a wonderful summer and is ready to get back to the inviting and ever-exciting Book Club season! \nThis month’s selection is My Name is Lucy Barton by Elizabeth Strout. This New York Times bestseller will provide plenty of material for a wonderful discussion. \nAs always coffee and refreshments will be provided. \nTo RSVP\, please call 843-723-9912 or email dreutter@charlestonlibrarysociety.org. \n#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • LONGLISTED FOR THE MAN BOOKER PRIZE • A simple hospital visit becomes a portal to the tender relationship between mother and daughter in this extraordinary novel by the Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Olive Kitteridge and The Burgess Boys. \nLucy Barton is recovering slowly from what should have been a simple operation. Her mother\, to whom she hasn’t spoken for many years\, comes to see her. Gentle gossip about people from Lucy’s childhood in Amgash\, Illinois\, seems to reconnect them\, but just below the surface lie the tension and longing that have informed every aspect of Lucy’s life: her escape from her troubled family\, her desire to become a writer\, her marriage\, her love for her two daughters. Knitting this powerful narrative together is the brilliant storytelling voice of Lucy herself: keenly observant\, deeply human\, and truly unforgettable.

SUMMARY:Speaker Series: Harry Farthing in Conversation with John Huey
DESCRIPTION:Come to the Charleston Library Society and  celebrate the release of Harry Farthings action-packed debut thriller SUMMIT: A NOVEL. \nFor tickets\, call 843-723-9912 or click here. \nIn the autumn of 1938 Germanys Reichsführer\, Heinrich Himmler\, is growing frustrated at the British using their regional power in India to block passage of an SS expedition to Tibet. Determined to spite them\, he plots to steal something the British hold dear and have failed for the seventh time that spring to achieve  a first summit of Mount Everest.   Seventy years later\, seasoned mountain guide Neil Quinn’s ninth visit to the top of the worlds highest mountain in the charge of the sixteen-year old son of a Long Island billionaire begins to unravel. As a desperate fight for their lives begins in the freezing air high above Tibet\, Quinn stumbles across a clue to a story that questions everything he thinks he knows about the great mountain.   When the bitter aftermath of Quinns disastrous climb turns to violent tragedy in Kathmandu\, his discovery pushes him into a relentless journey that takes him from the dangerous heights of Everest to the equally treacherous margins of a new Europe where history hungers to repeat itself.   Amidst a rich and diverse cast of characters\, each with their own reason to possess the mystery of his discovery\, Neil Quinn has to fight\, increasingly desperately\, for order and the truth. In doing so\, he reveals an older story of man and mountain to its shocking conclusion. \nHARRY FARTHING is an Englishman born in 1964 in Lynton\, North Devon\, and raised in the West Country. From 1987\, he enjoyed a successful career with one of the world’s largest commercial real estate consultancies. During this period\, he lived and worked in the City of London\, Lisbon-Portugal\, and Milan-Italy\, becoming Managing Director of the company’s Italian operations and European Board Director with responsibility for activities in Abu Dhabi\, Dubai\, Bahrain and Qatar. In 2010\, he took early retirement to move with his American wife to Charleston\, South Carolina\, where he resides today.\nFarthing has had a lifelong interest in exploration\, archaeology and world history\, both published and alternate. He is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and has travelled widely to extreme environments such as the Sahara Desert\, the Himalaya\, the Amazon and the Arctic North. An experienced mountaineer\, he has climbed Mt Blanc and the Matterhorn in the Alps\, Mt McKinley in Alaska\, Shishapangma\, the highest mountain in Tibet\, and on Mount Everest itself. In 2010 he successfully led all thirteen members of a charity climb to the summit of Kilimanjaro in Africa. In 2011 he made a journey across North America by BMW Motorcycle that linked the Atlantic\, Arctic and Pacific Oceans and travelled 2000 miles of unpaved roads above the 60th Parallel. That trip was the latest in a series of long motorcycle journeys that started with a ride from the UK to the Moroccan Sahara when he was just nineteen. An accomplished public speaker\, he has also raised substantial funds for charity through his climbing.\nSummit\, his debut novel\, marries his knowledge of world travel\, adventure sports\, mountaineering and modern history to create a gripping action story that is both compelling and thought provoking.

SUMMARY:Speaker Series: Jack Weatherford
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we welcome New York Time Bestselling Author\, Jack Weatherford as he speaks about his new book\, GENGHIS KHAN AND THE QUEST FOR GOD: How the World’s Greatest Conqueror Gave Us Religious Freedom \nThis event is free for members and $10 for nonmembers. \nFor tickets\, call 843-723-9912 or click here.  \nEven history’s most famous conqueror had a soft side. An acclaimed expert on Mongolia\, Weatherford (The Secret History of the Mongol Queens: How the Daughters of Genghis Khan Rescued His Empire\, 2010\, etc.) introduces readers to a Genghis Khan (c. 1162-1227) not discussed in most history books. Though he was unquestionably a ruthless and violent conqueror\, the author wants readers to see his subject as a thoughtful leader marked by extraordinary forethought and wisdom\, paired with a religious personality. AmongWeatherford’s most startling revelations is that\, centuries before John Locke and similar thinkers\, Genghis Khan believed in and promoted religious tolerance within his great empire. Early in the book\, the author does an admirable job explaining the physically harsh and brutal life into which Temujin—the name of the future Khan—was born and raised. Readers may grow to feel empathy for the young and unlikely future ruler\, until fratricide and other acts of violence quickly taint his image. Founding the nation of Mongolia in 1206 with 1 million followers\, Genghis Khan showed early wisdom in deciding to bring the written word to his empire\, and he set about having scribes put the Mongolian spoken language into writing. Military success led to vastly increased landholding\, and his empire grew. Weatherford details his conquest of China and then of Muslim lands to the west. Throughout\, Genghis Khan considered himself “the whip of heaven\,” chosen to bring order and justice to a troubled world. This included a solemn religious duty: “As heaven’s representative on earth\, he felt it was his duty to examine the religions of the people he had conquered to determine what they were doing incorrectly and to correct their errors.” As he aged\, however\, Genghis Khan transformed from judge to student\, as he spent more time learning about the religions of his conquered lands and incorporating their finest points into his administration and lawmaking. An intriguing\, eye-opening spiritual biography.

SUMMARY:SOLD OUT: Charleston Takes on Sea Level Rise: Strategies\, Projects\, Funding & Progress
DESCRIPTION:SOLD OUT \nMonday\, November 14\, 2016 \n6:00pm -8:00pm \nFree to the public. To RSVP\, please call (843) 723-9912 or email mstokenberry@charlestonlibrarysociety.org \nIt is widely understood that the sea level is rising at an accelerating rate\, posing a serious threat to the Charleston area.  If we do forget\, events like Hurricane Matthew and regular tidal flooding in the streets remind us. The above image\, from NOAA’s Sea Level Rise Viewer\, models what the flooding impacts on the Charleston peninsula will be with three feet of sea level rise. City planning currently projects a 1.5 to 2.5 foot rise within the next 50 years.  The question before us is not whether sea level rise is occurring but what actions are being taken to prepare for and combat its effects. \n This event\, sponsored by the League of Women Voters of the Charleston Area partnering with S.C. Sea Grant Consortium\, will explore: \n•     What has been\, is being\, and will be done? \n•     How will the necessary actions be funded? \n•     Will these efforts be enough? \n•     How can the public help? \nThe presenters are three professionals all of whom are close to the action in Charleston and are instrumental members of the Charleston Resilience Network. \nThe presenters will be \n•    Elizabeth Fly\, Ph.D.\, Coastal Climate Extension Specialist\, S.C. Sea Grant Consortium; \n•    Laura Cabiness\, P.E.I.\, Director\, Public Service Department\, City of Charleston; and \n•    Carolee Williams\, AICP\, of the City of Charleston\, Project Manager\, Planning\, Preservation\, and Sustainability\, City of Charleston. \nElizabeth Fly\, Ph.D.\, is a coastal climate extension specialist with S.C. Sea Grant Consortium and the Carolinas Integrated Sciences and Assessments program. She provides outreach and assistance to communities dealing with weather and climate hazards and adaptation\, and she works with Charleston Resilience Coalition (CRN). Resilience is the ability of a community to prepare for\, withstand\, and bounce back from disasters. The CRN\, created in 2014\, includes public and private sector organizations such as the City of Charleston\, DHEC-OCRM\, Charleston County\, BCD COG\, Charleston Water System\, SC Sea Grant Consortium\, SCANA\, and the College of Charleston.  Liz will also help administer the recent half-million dollar NOAA grant to SC Sea Grant Consortium on behalf of the CRN; the funds will be used specifically to develop strong\, localized flooding models\, which are essential to pin-pointing needed infrastructure improvements. \nLaura Cabiness\, P.E.\, is the City of Charleston’s director of public service. In addition to waste collection\, streets and sidewalks maintenance\, and building inspections\, Public Service is in charge of storm drainage and flood control.  This includes the implementation of multi-million dollar drainage projects that have been gradually being completed over the past three decades. In addition\, Laura is a key member involved in the development of the City’s Sea Level Rise Strategy\, an overall plan adopted by the City Council last year. \nCarolee Williams\, AICP\, is the City’s project manager for planning\, preservation\, and sustainability.  A member of the team that developed the City’s Sea Level Rise Strategy\, Carolee works collaboratively with Charleston’s Emergency Management\, Public Service\, and GIS directors on its implementation. She also coordinated the City’s application for the 100 Resilient Cities competition and is a representative on the National Academies of Sciences Resilient America Roundtable\, for which the City of Charleston is a pilot city.  She will lead her department in reviewing new City plans and potential amendments to the City’s zoning ordinances in the light of changes needed given the Sea Level Rise Strategy. \nThe program will be facilitated by Susan Lovelace\, a trained moderator. \nSusan Lovelace\, Ph.D.\, is currently the assistant director for development and extension at the S.C. Sea Grant Consortium\, a state agency which serves to bring people together to identify\, discuss\, generate\, study\, and share information about our coastal and ocean environment and its economic\, environmental\, and social importance to the state.  The Consortium’s work includes community resilience and adaptation to changing climate\, flooding and storms\, green infrastructure and natural resource planning and protection\, nature-based tourism\, wise use and conservation of living marine resources and coastal water resources. Susan is leading research to better understand how people learn about their environment\, engage with resource managers and shape public policy to protect their environment and well-being.  Susan also teaches environmental sciences and guides students in their Masters of Environmental Studies research at the College of Charleston. \nFor more information and resource material\, please visit the LWVCA webpage \nThe League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan organization that encourages informal and active participation in government. Membership is open to men and women of all ages.

Charleston\, a farmhouse in the pastoral setting of the rolling South Downs of Sussex near the English Channel\, was the home of Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant and became the country retreat of the famed “Bloomsbury Group” of writers\, artists and intellectuals such as Virginia and Leonard Woolf\, John Maynard Keynes\, Lytton Strachey\, E.M. Forster and from time to time\, T.S. Eliot and Vita Sackville-West\, among other friends. Charleston\, which is now open to the public\, hosts one of the most prestigious literary and ideas festivals in the UL. Over the last twenty-eight years\, it has featured innumerable well known international authors\, creators and thinkers. \n    The Charleston Trust and the Charleston Library Society welcome Julian Fellowes as the guest of honor at a reception at the Dock Street Theater. Although best known in the United States as the creator of the popular series Downton Abbey\, Lord Fellowes was an accomplished actor\, novelist\, film director and screenwriter long before Americans fell in love with the Crawleys. After graduating with a Masters from Cambridge University\, Lord Fellowes began his career his career in Los Angeles. He returned to England and gained recognition in many films. Remarkably\, he combines his active career in television and writing with his role as a member of the House of Lords. His newest book Belgravia\, was published in June 2016\, and he is currently at work on a period drama for NBC television entitled The Gilded Age. \n     To ask the questions everyone is eager to hear answered\, we are fortunate to have Ervin Duggan explore topics with Lord Fellowes at the Dock Street Theater. In addition to his outstanding accomplishments as former CEO of Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) and former President of the Society of the Four Arts in Palm Beach\, Mr. Duggan is a South Carolinian with deep family roots in Charleston.

SUMMARY:CLS Book Club: The Noise of Time
DESCRIPTION:The Book Club’s first meeting in 2017! \nCLS Book Club’s success depends on the dedication of our wonderful volunteers and patrons. So\, please RSVP if you are planning on attending. To RSVP\, call 843-723-9912 or email dreutter@charlestonlibrarysociety.org \nThis meeting’s selection is The Noise of Time by Julian Barnes. A compact masterpiece dedicated to the Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich: Julian Barnes’s first novel since his best-selling\, Man Booker Prize–winning The Sense of an Ending. \nIn 1936\, Shostakovich\, just thirty\, fears for his livelihood and his life. Stalin\, hitherto a distant figure\, has taken a sudden interest in his work and denounced his latest opera. Now\, certain he will be exiled to Siberia (or\, more likely\, executed on the spot)\, Shostakovich reflects on his predicament\, his personal history\, his parents\, various women and wives\, his children—and all who are still alive themselves hang in the balance of his fate. And though a stroke of luck prevents him from becoming yet another casualty of the Great Terror\, for decades to come he will be held fast under the thumb of despotism: made to represent Soviet values at a cultural conference in New York City\, forced into joining the Party and compelled\, constantly\, to weigh appeasing those in power against the integrity of his music. Barnes elegantly guides us through the trajectory of Shostakovich’s career\, at the same time illuminating the tumultuous evolution of the Soviet Union. The result is both a stunning portrait of a relentlessly fascinating man and a brilliant exploration of the meaning of art and its place in society.
