SUMMARY:Music at the Library: The Yale Alley Cats - CANCELED
DESCRIPTION:Due to the dramatic rise in the Omicron Covid-19 variant\, and in an abundance of caution\, this event has been canceled. Thank you for your understanding! \nThe Library Society is delighted to welcome back the Yale Alley Cats\, the incredibly talented\, world-renowned\, all-male a cappella singing group from Yale University\, making music around the world since their founding back in 1943. The group will perform classic and contemporary songs\, all just with the power of their impressive voices. This event is free and open to members only\, and an RSVP is required. To RSVP\, fill out the form below with your full name and email address. \nAbout the Yale Alley Cats: \nOn a brisk autumn night in 1943…the Alley Cats ‘founding fathers’ climbed to the top of Saybrook Tower and serenaded campus with their traditional opening number\, “Sally in Our Alley.” \n\n\nSince then\, as Yale’s classiest a cappella group\, the Cats have created over 200 original arrangements from jazz standards to Motown\, from timeless oldies to contemporary chart-toppers. They’ve released several dozen albums\, held seventy-four annual Champagne Jamborees\, and performed for public figures such as President Barack Obama\, her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II\, Martha Stewart\, and Jay Leno. In true Cat fashion\, as the first Yale a cappella group to tour internationally\, they bring their unique brand of refined all-male harmonies\, stylistic expertise\, and witty charm to destinations around the world. \nTheir musical repertoire\, all arranged by current or former Alley Cats\, reflects both their tradition and diversity. It has grown over 77 years to include a mix of everything from the Temptations and Michael Jackson to Sam Smith and Alicia Keys. They add modern pieces while staying true to their roots in jazz standards from the likes of Gershwin\, Ellington\, and Porter. The complex arrangements and acknowledged musicality allow them to perform for any audience\, from ambassadors to elementary schoolers\, making for an always exciting Alley Cat experience.

SUMMARY:Speaker Series: Brad Taylor
DESCRIPTION:The Charleston Library Society and Buxton Books proudly welcome a best-selling mega author\, and Charleston local\, to come speak in the beautiful Main Reading Room at 164 King Street. Taylor will be discussing his most recent release in the Pike Logan series\, End of Days. \nTickets for this event are $15 (which includes a $5 off coupon) or $35 for admittance and signed book-included package. \nTo purchase tickets for this event\, click here or call 843-723-9912.  \nTo purchase a signed copy of End of Days\, click here! \nAbout the Book: \nPike Logan must stop a deranged killer hell-bent on igniting an international conflagration in this explosive\, action-packed thriller from New York Times bestselling author and former special forces officer\, Brad Taylor. \nWhen a paragliding trip over the picturesque mountains of Switzerland results in the brutal murder of the former head of Israeli intelligence\, Mossad brings in terrorist hunters Aaron and Shoshana to investigate. But they’ll need help to find out who was behind the attack and what they’re planning next. Luckily\, Aaron and Shoshana know exactly who to call. \nTaskforce operators Pike Logan and Jennifer Cahill have been trapped in Charleston\, South Carolina during COVID-19\, so when Aaron and Shoshana show up on their doorstep with Israeli passports and a new mission\, they jump at the chance to assist their friends. Some suspect that Keta’ib Hezbollah\, an Iranian-funded militia group operating in Iraq\, might be responsible for the “accidental” deaths of key members of the American and Israeli governments. But something isn’t adding up\, and Pike\, Jennifer\, and the two Mossad operators are determined to find the real assassins before more people are cut down. \nAs they stumble upon the trail of a serial killer loose on the streets of Rome connected to the deaths and follow evidence leading to the exalted Knights of Malta\, they must wade deep into the contentious religious and political fractures of Israel and the greater Middle East. It’s a dangerous world where fanatics and legitimate organizations exist side by side\, and it’s up to the Taskforce to determine who is really pulling the strings. What they find could have disastrous consequences not only for them\, but for the entire world… \nAbout Brad: \nBrad Taylor was born on Okinawa\, Japan\, but grew up on 40-acres in rural Texas. Graduating from the University of Texas\, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Infantry. Brad served for more than 21 years\, retiring as a Special Forces Lieutenant Colonel. During that time he held numerous Infantry and Special Forces positions\, including eight years in 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment – Delta where he commanded multiple troops and a squadron. He has conducted operations in support of US national interests in Iraq\, Afghanistan\, and other classified locations. \nHis final assignment was as the Assistant Professor of Military Science at The Citadel in Charleston\, SC. He holds a Master’s of Science in Defense Analysis from the Naval Postgraduate School\, with a concentration in Irregular Warfare. In 2011\, Brad published his debut novel\, One Rough Man\, which was an immediate success and launched the Pike Logan series. Now with more than 14 installments and nearly 3 million copies sold\, the series has consistently hit the New York Times bestseller list. When not writing\, he serves as a security consultant on asymmetric threats for various agencies. He lives in Charleston\, SC with his wife and two daughters.

SUMMARY:Speaker Series: Armand Derfner In Conversation with Deborah Kennedy Kennard
DESCRIPTION:CLS welcomes author and attorney Armand Derfner to discuss Justice Deferred: Race and the Supreme Court. Derfner co-authored this book with historian Orville V. Burton\, and it is the first account that comprehensively charts the Court’s race jurisprudence. Derfner will be in conversation with Deborah K. Kennard\, successful attorney and businesswoman with extensive experience in the nonprofit sector. \nJustice Deferred dives into addressing nearly two hundred cases involving America’s racial minorities\, the authors probe the parties involved\, the justices’ reasoning\, and the impact of individual rulings. We learn of heroes such as Thurgood Marshall; villains\, including Roger Taney; and enigmas like Oliver Wendell Holmes and Hugo Black. Much of the fragility of civil rights in America is due to the Supreme Court\, but as this sweeping history also reminds us\, the justices still have the power to make good on the country’s promise of equal rights for all. Tickets are $10 for CLS members and $15 for nonmembers. \nThis event is in-person and ticketed – To purchase tickets\, click here. \nTo purchase your copy of Justice Deferred: Race and the Supreme Court from Buxton Books\, click here. \nAbout the Authors: \n\nArmand Derfner has been a civil rights lawyer for over fifty years. He has been counsel for\, among others\, the NAACP Legal Defense Fund (LDF) and the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF)\, and helped desegregate university systems and legislatures across the South. He argued his first Supreme Court case in 1968. \nOrville Vernon Burton is the prizewinning author of several books\, including The Age of Lincoln. He is Judge Matthew J. Perry Jr. Distinguished Professor of History at Clemson University and Emeritus University Scholar and Professor of History at the University of Illinois. \nAbout Deborah K. Kennard: \nKennard is a graduate of Yale Law School and received her undergraduate degree in Political Science from Duke University\, magna cum laude. She is a former managing counsel for Mobil Oil Corporation (now Exxon Mobil Corporation). In that position\, she supervised lawyers located in the U.S.\, London and Singapore who handled legal matters related to the global supply\, trading and transportation operations of the company and its affiliates. \nShe has served on various boards in Washington\, D.C.\, and currently serves on the following nonprofit boards in Charleston\, S.C. — Spoleto Festival USA; the Gibbes Museum of Art; WINGS for Kids; and the Charleston-to-Charleston Literary Festival. DESCRIPTION:The Charleston Library Society is honored to host Ambassador Jean-Arthur Régibeau for the second installment of our Ambassador R.L. Walker International Relations & Diplomacy Series. Amb. Régibeau represents His Majesty The King of the Belgians and Belgium’s federal government in the United States of America and in the Commonwealth of the Bahamas. He is responsible for the direction and work of the Embassy and its Consulates\, including bilateral political and economic relations\, visa and consular services. Walker International Relations & Diplomacy Series: \nDuring the summer of 2021\, the Library Society received a very generous gift to establish a program series honoring a South Carolina scholar and diplomat\, Richard L. (“Dixie”) Walker.  In 1981\, Walker was chosen by President Ronald Reagan to serve as his ambassador to the Republic of Korea. After unanimous confirmation by the U.S. Senate\, he served with distinction at that post until 1986\, longer than any other American ambassador. Walker was on the faculty of Yale University when he was recruited by Governor Donald Russell to organize a new program in international studies at the University of South Carolina (USC) that he headed until 1972. In 1961\, he founded the Institute of International Studies and headed it until 1981\, as it grew into a preeminent national and international center of research\, conferences\, consultation and publications. In 1996\, the Institute was renamed the Richard L. Walker Institute in his honor. The lecture series will cover a multitude of topics\, and we hope that the viewers gain fresh perspectives on the challenges facing the intersecting spheres of international relations & diplomacy.

SUMMARY:Speaker Series: Emmanuel Ducamp - From Western Europe to Imperial Russia: A Fair & Fruitful Transmission in Garden Design
DESCRIPTION:Please join us in welcoming Emmanuel Ducamp\, lauded art historian\, attorney\, and author\, for a discussion on garden design from Western Europe to Imperial Russia. It is no surprise\, as the newly built Russian capital city of St Petersburg was to be “a window on to Europe” that it would also benefit from West European garden design. Perhaps the best known example is that of Peterhof\, on the Finland Gulf\, where Peter the Great had cascades and water features copied from those he had seen and been impressed with during his visit of Versailles and Marly in May 1717. These precise albums of plans and views were presented to Peter Ist by the Duc d’Antin\, Surintendant des Bâtiments du roi\, on the occasion of his visit\, or simply by drawing French talents to come and work in distant Russia with enticing salaries. Throughout the eighteenth century\, the process will repeat itself\, would it be in the Imperial gardens of Peterhof\, Tsarskoie Selo and Pavlovsk\, or in private ones\, such as that of Gachina\, designed for Count Grigori Orlov\, favourite of Catherine the Great\, by two English gardeners called in from Britain. Ducamp’s presentation will thus stress how Western sources were copied in Russia\, often to find themselves adapted and reinterpreted according to local customs\, climate necessities\, or distinctive taste\, forming altogether a new tradition which has been preserved to this day. This event is in person and ticketed – tickets are $10 for CLS members and $15 for guests. \n\nTo purchase your tickets\, click here. \nAbout the Author: \nAn Art historian and lawyer by training\, Emmanuel Ducamp started his career as a specialist of French Decorative Arts\, soon extending it to foreign countries such as Russia and Germany. He has been traveling to Russia for more than thirty years\, working extensively with Russian curators to create a series of books on Russian palaces and parks\, the Decorative Arts or Works of Art from Russian collections. In this capacity\, he was a co-curator for the exhibition “Artistic Lyxury : Fabergé – Tiffany – Lalique” organized by the Cleveland Museum of Art and the San Francisco Legion of Honour (2009). He recently devoted his teaching at the Ecole du Louvre on Russian palaces and German royal residences\, focusing it not only on décor and architecture\, but including the study of their surrounding parks\, gardens and pavilions. His interest in this subject was sparked by the celebrated French park “Le Bois des Moutiers”\, in Normandy\, on the board of which he sat for many years\, and on which he published a book with the French publishing house Flammarion. He currently sits on the board of the Société des Amateurs de Jardins in Paris\, and is a member of the Scientific Committee of the European Institute for Gardens and Landscapes. \nPlease Note: We are continuing to monitor the COVID-19 pandemic and greatly value the safety of our patrons. All events require masks for entry and are subject to change from in-person to Zoom format if safety protocols need to be amended. SUMMARY:Speaker Series: Xavier Salomon
DESCRIPTION:The Library Society is delighted to welcome Xavier Salomon for what is sure to be a riveting discussion about his experience as the Frick Collection’s Deputy Director and Peter Jay Sharp Chief Curator. For this program\, Salomon will focus on artist Rosalba Carriera (1673-1757)\, who was the most celebrated woman artist in eighteenth-century Europe. She worked in the inherently fragile medium of pastel and was always concerned for the well-being of her creations. The recent discovery of a sacred image placed by Rosalba in one of her pastels has led to discovery of a number of similar prints. We will follow in Rosalba’s footsteps\, from her house in Venice to the European courts for which her pastels were destined. Tickets for this in-person event are $10 for CLS members and $15 for guests\, and can be purchased with the link below or by calling 843-723-9912. \nThis event is in-person and ticketed – To purchase tickets\, click here. \nPlease Note: We are continuing to monitor the COVID-19 pandemic and greatly value the safety of our patrons. All events require masks for entry and are subject to change from in-person to Zoom format if safety protocols need to be amended. To stay up to date on this event’s details\, we recommend you check this page regularly. All ticket sales are final. \nAbout the Speaker: \nSalomon is the Frick’s Deputy Director and Peter Jay Sharp Chief Curator. A noted scholar of Paolo Veronese\, he curated the monographic exhibition on the artist at the National Gallery\, London (2014). Previously\, Salomon was Curator in the Department of European Paintings at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and\, before that\, the Arturo and Holly Melosi Chief Curator at Dulwich Picture Gallery\, where he curated Van Dyck in Sicily\, 1624–25: Painting and the Plague (2012) and collaborated with Nicholas Cullinan on Twombly and Poussin: Arcadian Painters (2011). As an Andrew W. Mellon Curatorial Fellow at the Frick (2004–6)\, he curated Veronese’s Allegories: Virtue\, Love\, and Exploration in Renaissance Venice (2006). Salomon’s other exhibitions for the Frick include Cagnacci’s Repentant Magdalene: An Italian Baroque Masterpiece from the Norton Simon Museum (2016–17)\, Veronese in Murano: Two Venetian Renaissance Masterpieces Restored (2017–18)\, Murillo: The Self-Portraits (2017–18)\, Canova’s George Washington (2018)\, Tiepolo in Milan: The Lost Frescoes of Palazzo Archinto (2019)\, and (with Aimee Ng and Alexander Noelle) Bertoldo di Giovanni: The Renaissance of Sculpture in Medici Florence (2019–20). Salomon received his Ph.D. on the patronage of Cardinal Pietro Aldobrandini from the Courtauld Institute of Art. He has published in Apollo\, The Burlington Magazine\, Master Drawings\, The Medal\, The Art Newspaper\, Journal of the History of Collections\, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art Journal. Salomon also wrote (with Maira Kalman) the latest volume in the Frick Diptych series\, Rembrandt’s Polish Rider (2019). He is a trustee and a member of the Projects Committee of Save Venice. SUMMARY:Middleton Place Foundation Book Launch with Virginia Beach - American Landmark
DESCRIPTION:Join us in welcoming beloved author Virginia Beach for a book launch celebration of her newest piece of work\, American Landmark: Charles Duell and the Rebirth of Middleton Place\, hosted by the Middleton Place Foundation. When Beach undertook writing the history of the Middleton Place Foundation\, she began by tracing the early life of Middleton descendant Charles Duell\, who established the nonprofit foundation in 1974. Seeking to understand the importance of Middleton Place in the pantheon of American landmarks\, the author also examined some 400 years of the historical record – starting with the colonial era and the American Revolution\, through the Civil War and Reconstruction\, and into the 20th and 21st centuries. Affirming Ralph Waldo Emerson’s thesis that “there is properly no history\, only biography\,” American Landmark weaves together myriad biographical stories\, introducing us to an array of protagonists – both White and Black – associated with Middleton Place. Whether a president of the First Continental Congress\, a schooner captain\, a signer of the Declaration of Independence\, or a pastry cook – the lives of numerous Middletons are intertwined with those of the enslaved men and women\, and their descendants\, who served them. Moreover\, Middleton Place has become a nexus for truth seeking and reconciliation as Americans pursue a fuller understanding of their past. \nThis event is in-person\, free\, and open to the public\, but an RSVP is required. To RSVP\, please fill out the form below. \nTo purchase your copy of American Landmark: Charles Duell and the Rebirth of Middleton Place by Virginia Beach from Buxton Books\, click here. \nAbout the Author: \n\n\n\n\nVirginia Beach writes for numerous publications on the subjects of plantation history and land conservation. She has also served on the staffs of The Nature Conservancy\, the Lowcountry Land Trust and the South Carolina Sea Grant Consortium\, as well as on the national editorial board of Saving Land. A native of Richmond\, she earned a B.A. in English from the University of Virginia and served for two years as a Peace Corps volunteer in East Africa.Virginia’s first book\, Medway\, a history of a Cooper River rice plantation\, was published by Wyrick & Company with photographs by Tom Blagden. Her next book\, Rice & Ducks: The Surprising Convergence that Saved the Carolina Lowcountry\, was published jointly by Ducks Unlimited and Evening Post Books. It chronicles the land conservation movement of Lowcountry South Carolina and won the 2015 Independent Publisher’s gold medal for best southeastern nonfiction.Virginia and her husband\, Dana Beach – who founded the Coastal Conservation League in 1989 – are avid birders and nature enthusiasts\, having lived in Charleston for nearly four decades and raised their two children there. In 2019\, they collaborated to write a history of the Conservation League entitled\, A Wholly Admirable Thing: Defending Nature and Community on the South Carolina Coast.

SUMMARY:The Founding Farmer - The Rural Life of George Washington & His Relationship To The System of Slavery\, told by Author Bruce Ragsdale
DESCRIPTION:This event was postponed from Thursday\, January 13\, 2022 to Tuesday\, March 22\, 2022 due to international travel restriction involving COVID-19. \nCalling all history buffs! The Library Society is thrilled to host author Bruce A. Ragsdale for an evening lecture on his new book\, Washington at the Plow: The Founding Farmer and the Question of Slavery. In this thoroughly researched and fascinating read\, Ragsdale explains how George Washington spent more of his working life farming than he did at war or in political office. For over forty years\, he devoted himself to the improvement of agriculture\, which he saw as the means by which the American people would attain the “respectability & importance which we ought to hold in the world.” As Ragsdale shows\, it was the inefficacy of chattel slavery\, as much as moral revulsion at the practice\, that informed Washington’s decision to free the enslaved people at Mount Vernon after his death. \nTickets for this in-person event are $10 for CLS members and $15 for CLS Guests\, and can be purchased with the link below or by calling 843-723-9912. \n\nThis event is in person and ticketed – To purchase tickets\, click here. \nTo purchase your copy of Washington at the Plow from Buxton Books\, click here. \nAbout the Book: \nWashington at the Plow depicts the “first farmer of America” as a leading practitioner of the New Husbandry\, a transatlantic movement that spearheaded advancements in crop rotation. A tireless experimentalist\, Washington pulled up his tobacco and switched to wheat production\, leading the way for the rest of the country. He filled his library with the latest agricultural treatises and pioneered land-management techniques that he hoped would guide small farmers\, strengthen agrarian society\, and ensure the prosperity of the nation. \nSlavery was a key part of Washington’s pursuits. He saw enslaved field workers and artisans as means of agricultural development and tried repeatedly to adapt slave labor to new kinds of farming. To this end\, he devised an original and exacting system of supervision of the enslaved. But Washington eventually found that forced labor could not achieve the productivity he desired. His inability to reconcile ideals of scientific farming and rural order with race-based slavery led him to reconsider the traditional foundations of the Virginia plantation. \nAbout the Author: \nBruce A. Ragsdale served for twenty years as director of the Federal Judicial History Office at the Federal Judicial Center. The author of A Planters’ Republic: The Search for Economic Independence in Revolutionary Virginia\, he has been a fellow at the Washington Library at Mount Vernon and the International Center for Jefferson Studies. \n

SUMMARY:A Historical Fiction Tackles Social Issues & Hate Crimes In Yesterday's South to Present - Author Michael Almond Discusses His New Novel\, The Tannery
DESCRIPTION:The Library Society is thrilled to host author Michael A. Almond for a discussion of his highly anticipated debut novel\, The Tannery\, a story that combines violent crime\, Southern history\, and pressing social issues into a gripping novel that is sure to enthrall its reader. Tickets are $10 for CLS members and $15 for nonmembers. \nPraise for The Tannery: \n“Riveting… In his debut novel\, Michael Almond has given us a page-turner. Far more than a legal thriller\, though it is that\, The Tannery is historical fiction at its finest – a story set near the turn of the 20th Century in North Carolina. Some of this tale will sound disturbingly familiar to readers in the 21st Century\, all the more reason to consider its lessons. History can come alive in a great work of fiction. This is one of those times.” – Frye Gaillard\, civil rights historian\, author of A Hard Rain: America in the 1960s \n“The Tannery is tough to put down because the storytelling is so compelling… This book is timely\, in that we can reflect on how far we have come today and see the tangible progress we have made. But it also glaringly reminds us that the issues of racism\, voter suppression\, and economic inequality are still with us\, and indeed\, to paraphrase a famous author…the past is not yet passed\, it is still with us today.” -Harvey B. Gantt\, former mayor of Charlotte\, first African American student accepted by Clemson University\, inspiration for the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African American Arts + Culture. \nThis event is in-person and ticketed – To purchase tickets\, click here. \nTo purchase your copy of the Tannery by Michael Almond from Buxton Books\, click here. \nAbout the Author: \nMichael A. Almond\, a retired international business attorney\, was raised in the small town of Pilot Mountain in the Piedmont foothills of North Carolina.  He received his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill\, and was a Fulbright Scholar in political science at the University of Mannheim\, Germany. An avid reader of Southern history and literature\, Michael and his wife Helen Ruth live at Almond Springs Farm in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina with two horses\, three donkeys\, and their canine companions\, Lucy and Greta. The Tannery is his debut novel. \nAbout the Book: \nJuly 5\, 1900\, Wilkes County\, North Carolina: The beautiful young daughter of tannery owner Jakob Schumann is found dead on the north bank of the Yadkin River\, brutally beaten\, a skinning knife in her chest.  Who killed Rachel Schumann? And why? Ambitious Wilkes prosecutor Vincent Taliaferro has arrested Virgil Wade\, a mixed-race boy\, and is convinced the case is open and shut. But local lawyer Ben Waterman is not so sure. Ben’s investigation uncovers evidence that undermines the prosecutor’s case and points in an entirely different direction. But can he prove it? Can he convince an all-White\, all-male jury of Virgil’s innocence? The Tannery transports readers to the turbulent world of the post-Reconstruction South. Reflecting issues prominent in today’s headlines\, themes of Black voter suppression and intimidation\, the violence and depravity of vigilante “justice\,” and the rise of Jim Crow drive the narrative to its dramatic and surprising conclusion.

SUMMARY:Thomas Jefferson’s Incredible Post-Presidency Legacy\, The University of Virginia - Discussed by Andrew O'Shaugnessy
DESCRIPTION:CLS is thrilled to host Andrew O’Shaughnessy for a lecture on his newest book. The Illimitable Freedom of the Human Mind: Thomas Jefferson’s Idea of a University covers the birth and life span of the University of Virginia\, Jefferson’s incredible post-presidency legacy. Tickets for this event are $10 for CLS members and $15 for CLS Guests. \nAll too often treated as an epilogue in the life of Thomas Jefferson\, this book makes the case that that the creation of the university is deserving of his own estimate as one of the three greatest achievements and that it had an important but unappreciated influence upon higher education in America. It reveals his talents as a lawyer who drafted the legislation for the assembly; as a surveyor who personally mapped the grounds; as a politician who masterminded the strategy to win approval in the assembly and to deflect intense opposition; as an architect who designed the layout\, chose the building materials\, and corresponded with the craftsman; and as an intellectual who developed an innovative curriculum\, suggested the books for the library and the criteria for selecting the faculty. Jefferson was concerned with what remains a perennial issue which is the importance of education in the success of the republican democratic experiment. \nThis event is in-person and ticketed. To purchase tickets\, click here. \nTo purchase your copy of The Illimitable Freedom of the Human Mind from Buxton Books\, click here. \nAbout the Author: \nAndrew O’Shaughnessy is the Vice President of Monticello\, the Saunders Director of the Robert H. Smith International Center for Jefferson Studies at the Thomas Jefferson Foundation and Professor of History at the University of Virginia.  His most recent book is the Illimitable Freedom of the Human Mind: Thomas Jefferson’s Idea of a University (Charlottesville: University of Virginia Press\, 2021).  He has previously published The Men Who Lost America. British Leadership\, the American Revolution and the Fate of the Empire (New Haven: Yale University Press\, 2013)\, which received eight national awards including the New York Historical Society American History Book Prize\, the George Washington Book Prize and The Society of Military History Book Prize. He is also the author of An Empire Divided: The American Revolution and the British Caribbean (Philadelphia: University of Pennsylvania Press\, 2000) which was the alternate designate selection of the History Book Club.  A Fellow of the Royal Historical Society\, he is an editor of the Jeffersonian America series published by the University of Virginia Press. \nAbout the Book: \nAlready renowned as a statesman\, Thomas Jefferson in his retirement from government turned his attention to the founding of an institution of higher learning. Never merely a patron\, the former president oversaw every aspect of the creation of what would become the University of Virginia. Along with the Declaration of Independence and the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom\, he regarded it as one of the three greatest achievements in his life. Nonetheless\, historians often treat this period as an epilogue to Jefferson’s career. \nIn The Illimitable Freedom of the Human Mind\, Andrew O’Shaughnessy offers a twin biography of Jefferson in retirement and of the University of Virginia in its earliest years. He reveals how Jefferson’s vision anticipated the modern university and profoundly influenced the development of American higher education. The University of Virginia was the most visible apex of what was a much broader educational vision that distinguishes Jefferson as one of the earliest advocates of a public education system. \nJust as Jefferson’s proclamation that “all men are created equal” was tainted by the ongoing institution of slavery\, however\, so was his university. O’Shaughnessy addresses this tragic conflict in Jefferson’s conception of the university and society\, showing how Jefferson’s loftier aspirations for the university were not fully realized. Nevertheless\, his remarkable vision in founding the university remains vital to any consideration of the role of education in the success of the democratic experiment.

SUMMARY:CLS Book Club: Matrix
DESCRIPTION:Jump into spring with the new CLS Book Club pick – Matrix by Lauren Groff. Join fellow bookworms in the Main Reading Room to discuss this incredible historical fiction novel and immerse yourself into the life story of an orphan who is cast out of the royal court and put in charge of an impoverished abbey. This event is free and open to the public\, but an RSVP is required. \nTo RSVP\, fill out the form at the bottom of this page.  \nAbout the Author: \nLauren Groff is the author of six books of fiction\, the most recent the novel MATRIX (September 2021). Her work has won The Story Prize\, the ABA Indies’ Choice Award\, and France’s Grand Prix de l’Héroïne\, was a three time finalist for the National Book Award for Fiction and twice for the Kirkus Prize\, and was shortlisted for the National Book Critics Circle Prize\, the Southern Book Prize\, and the Los Angeles Times Prize. She has received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study\, and was named one of Granta’s Best of Young American Novelists. Her work has been translated into over thirty languages. She lives in Gainesville\, Florida. \nAbout the Book: \nLauren Groff returns with her exhilarating first new novel since Fates and Furies. Cast out of the royal court by Eleanor of Aquitaine\, deemed too coarse and rough-hewn for marriage or courtly life\, seventeen-year-old Marie de France is sent to England to be the new prioress of an impoverished abbey\, its nuns on the brink of starvation and beset by disease. \nAt first taken aback by the severity of her new life\, Marie finds focus and love in collective life with her singular and mercurial sisters. In this crucible\, Marie steadily supplants her desire for family\, for her homeland\, for the passions of her youth with something new to her: devotion to her sisters\, and a conviction in her own divine visions. Marie\, born the last in a long line of women warriors and crusaders\, is determined to chart a bold new course for the women she now leads and protects. But in a world that is shifting and corroding in frightening ways\, one that can never reconcile itself with her existence\, will the sheer force of Marie’s vision be bulwark enough? \nEqually alive to the sacred and the profane\, Matrix gathers currents of violence\, sensuality\, and religious ecstasy in a mesmerizing portrait of consuming passion\, aberrant faith\, and a woman that history moves both through and around. Lauren Groff’s new novel\, her first since Fates and Furies\, is a defiant and timely exploration of the raw power of female creativity in a corrupted world.

DESCRIPTION:The Library Society and the College of Charleston’s School of Languages\, Cultures and World Affairs are excited to welcome author Nathaniel Philbrick for a lecture on In the Hurricane’s Eye: The Genius Of George Washington and The Victory At Yorktown.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn one of the latest volumes of his acclaimed American Revolution series\, Nathaniel Philbrick tells the thrilling story of the year that won the Revolutionary War. In the fall of 1780\, after five frustrating years of war\, George Washington had come to realize that the only way to defeat the British Empire was with the help of the French navy. Recognized today as one of the most important naval engagements in the history of the world\, the Battle of the Chesapeake—fought without a single American ship—made the subsequent victory of the Americans at Yorktown a virtual inevitability. A riveting and wide-ranging story\, full of dramatic\, unexpected turns\, In the Hurricane’s Eye reveals that the fate of the American Revolution depended\, in the end\, on Washington and the sea. \nTickets for this event are $10 for CLS Members\, $15 for CLS Guests\, and FREE for College of Charleston students\, staff and faculty. A ground-breaking history of the key players of the time who\, through their actions and inaction\, shaped their country’s policy and enabled Hitler’s domination of Europe. Both sweeping and intimate\, it is not only an eye-opening history but a timeless lesson on the challenges of standing up to aggression and authoritarianism – and the calamity that results from failing to do so. \nTo purchase your tickets\, click here or call 843-723-9912. \nPraise for Appeasement: \n‘This is the debut of an unusually talented writer\, one of the most promising young historians to enter our field for years’ – Max Hastings \n‘This is well-paced narrative history: intelligent\, lucid\, riveting — even while possessing the terrible knowledge of what happened next.’ – New York Times \n‘The best single account of what actions led the UK to fall into World War II” – General Jim Mattis \n“A brilliant and sparkling debut that reads like a thriller. I couldn’t put it down.” – Peter Frankopan \nAbout the Author:  \nTim Bouverie is the author of the Sunday Times bestseller Appeasement: Chamberlain\, Hitler\, Churchill and the Road to War.  Shortlisted for the Orwell Prize\, Appeasement was praised by the New York Times\, Wall Street Journal and Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung\, as well as by Antony Beevor\, Margaret Macmillan and Max Hastings.  A Visiting Fellow at St Antony’s college\, Oxford\, Tim is now working on a sequel entitled Allies at War.  During lockdown\, unable to access archives\, he wrote a short book on classical music\, Perfect Pitch: 100 Pieces of Classical Music to bring Joy\, Tears\, Solace\, Empathy & Inspiration. \nAbout the Book: \nOn a wet afternoon in September 1938\, Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain stepped off an airplane and announced that his visit to Hitler had averted the greatest crisis in recent memory. It was\, he later assured the crowd in Downing Street\, “peace for our time.” Less than a year later\, Germany invaded Poland and the Second World War began. \nAppeasement is a groundbreaking history of the disastrous years of indecision\, failed diplomacy and parliamentary infighting that enabled Hitler’s domination of Europe. Drawing on deep archival research and sources not previously seen by historians\, Tim Bouverie has created an unforgettable portrait of the ministers\, aristocrats\, and amateur diplomats who\, through their actions and inaction\, shaped their country’s policy and determined the fate of Europe. \nBeginning with the advent of Hitler in 1933\, we embark on a fascinating journey from the early days of the Third Reich to the beaches of Dunkirk. Bouverie takes us not only into the backrooms of Parliament and 10 Downing Street but also into the drawing rooms and dining clubs of fading imperial Britain\, where Hitler enjoyed surprising support among the ruling class and even some members of the royal family.

A naturalist at heart\, with a Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology\, Terry says nature and synchronicity have been two of her most profound teachers. Her favorite pastime\, combing the beach of a Florida barrier island\, is a dream come true—especially for a child whose turbulent upbringing threatened to overwhelm her. Terry recounts her early struggle to keep hope alive in her coming-of-age memoir Moonlight on Linoleum\, which won Elle Magazine’s 2012 Grand Prix Nonfiction Book of the Year. \nMary Alice Monroe is the New York Times bestselling author of 27 books\, including The Summer of Lost and Found\, the 2021 installment in her beloved Beach House series. Monroe is an active conservationist and serves on the South Carolina Aquarium Board Emeritus\, The Leatherback Trust\, The Pat Conroy Literary Center Honorary Board\, and Casting Carolinas Advisory Board. She is especially proud to be a twenty year plus state-certified volunteer with the Island Turtle Team. \nAbout the Book: \nTerry Helwig explores how the human heart\, tested by time and adversity\, broken open by love and beauty\, ripens and bears fruit. Her lyrical and compelling reflections awaken our sense of wonder to our place in the vast universe\, to the ebb and flow of joy and loss\, and to the sacred treasure of being alive. Set on her beloved\, Florida barrier island\, Helwig discovers a landscape of fierce beauty within as well as without. She uncovers the solace of following the phases of the moon\, the curve of a shell\, and the solstice path of the sun. Nature reconnects us to our true center—that place where wisdom blossoms. Inspired by years of living beside the sea\, the book’s three sections—ebb tide\, slack tide\, and flood tide—metaphorically refer to times of loss\, equanimity\, and fullness. “The dance of these perpetual tides in our daily lives\,” writes Helwig\, “continually shifts the shoreline of who we are\, and\, more importantly\, who we will become.”

SUMMARY:A Photographic Exploration of the Voting Rights Movement
DESCRIPTION:Ordinary images can tell extraordinary stories. Photographer and author\, William Abranowicz\, sits down in conversation with historian and academic\, Dr. Bernard Powers\, to discuss Abranowicz’ recent book and project\, This Far and No Further: Photographs Inspired by the Voting Rights Movement. The two will bring history that is integral to understanding present-day America to the forefront through images that viewers can see and relate to on the simplest of levels. The stories that come with the book’s images and conversations are what we must truly see as living American history. \nTickets for this event are $10 for CLS members and $15 for guests. \nTo purchase your ticket\, call 843-723-9912 or click here. \nAbout the Book: \nStanding on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma\, Alabama\, in 2017\, photographer William Abranowicz was struck by the weight of historical memory at this hallowed site of one of the civil rights movement’s defining episodes: 1965’s “Bloody Sunday\,” when Alabama police officers attacked peaceful marchers. To Abranowicz’s eye\, Selma seemed relatively unchanged from its appearance in the photographs Walker Evans made there in the 1930s. That\, coupled with an awareness of renewed voter suppression efforts at state and federal levels\, inspired Abranowicz to explore the living legacy of the civil and voting rights movement through photographing locations\, landscapes\, and individuals associated with the struggle\, from Rosa Parks and Harry Belafonte to the barn where Emmett Till was murdered. \nThe result is This Far and No Further\, a collection of photographs from Abranowicz’s journey through the American South. Through symbolism\, metaphor\, and history\, he unearths extraordinary stories of brutality\, heroism\, sacrifice\, and redemption hidden within ordinary American landscapes\, underscoring the crucial necessity of defending—and exercising—our right to vote at this tenuous moment for American democracy. \nAbout the Author:\nWilliam Abranowicz is a photographer whose work has been acquired by the National Portrait Galleries of the United States and United Kingdom\, the Getty\, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, among other collections. A long-standing contributing photographer to Condé Nast Traveler\, he is the author of five books\, most recently American Originals: Creative Interiors.\n \nAbout the Interlocutor:\nBERNARD E. Currently Powers is the founding director of the College of Charleston’s Center for the Study of Slavery in Charleston.
