We must find and destroy her.” This spy was Virginia Hall\, a young socialite from Baltimore\, who\, after being rejected from the Foreign Service because of her gender and prosthetic leg\, talked her way into the SOE\, the WWII British spy organization dubbed Churchill’s “ministry of ungentlemanly warfare.” Hall\, known as the “Madonna of the Resistance\,” was one of the greatest spies in American and English history\, yet her full story remains untold. \nAt a time when sending female secret agents into enemy territory was still strictly forbidden\, Hall coordinated a network of spies to report on German troop movements\, arranged equipment parachute drops for Resistance fighters\, and recruited and trained guerrilla units to ambush enemy convoys and blow up bridges and railroads. Even as her face covered WANTED posters throughout Europe\, she refused orders to evacuate. She finally escaped in a death-defying climb over of the Pyrenees into Spain\, her cover blown\, and her associates imprisoned or executed. But\, she plunged back into the field with the American OSS secret service\, directing partisan armies to back up the Allied forces landing at Normandy. King George VI awarded her the OBE in 1943 and she received the Distinguished Service Cross from the US in 1946\, the only American woman to receive this honor. \nBest-selling author\, Sonia Purnell will reveal the captivating story of a formidable\, yet shockingly overlooked\, heroine whose fierce persistence helped win a world war. Paramount Pictures has acquired the rights to the Purnell’s meticulously researched upcoming book A Woman of No Importance: The Untold Story of the American Spy Who Helped Win World War II (April 2019) and has attached actress Daisy Ridley to star as Virginia Hall.

SUMMARY:Speaker Series: Heath Hardage Lee
DESCRIPTION:In a page-turning work of narrative non-fiction\, Heath Hardage Lee tells the true story of the fierce band of women who battled Washington and Hanoi to bring their husbands home from the jungles of Vietnam. Lees The League of Wives: The Untold Story of the Women Who Took on the U.S. Government to Bring Their Husbands Home is certain to intrigue everyone. To purchase\, call 843-723-9912 or click here. \nABOUT THE BOOK:\nThe true story of the fierce band of women who battled Washington and Hanoi to bring their husbands home from the jungles of Vietnam. \nOn February 12\, 1973\, one hundred and sixteen men who\, just six years earlier\, had been high flying Navy and Air Force pilots\, shuffled\, limped\, or were carried off a huge military transport plane at Clark Air Base in the Philippines. These American servicemen had endured years of brutal torture\, kept shackled and starving in solitary confinement\, in rat-infested\, mosquito-laden prisons\, the worst of which was The Hanoi Hilton. \nMonths later\, the first Vietnam POWs to return home would learn that their rescuers were their wives\, a group of women that included Jane Denton\, Sybil Stockdale\, Louise Mulligan\, Andrea Rander\, Phyllis Galanti\, and Helene Knapp. These women\, who formed The National League of Families\, would never have called themselves feminists\, but they had become the POW and MIAs most fervent advocates\, going to extraordinary lengths to facilitate their husbands freedom and to account for missing military men by relentlessly lobbying government leaders\, conducting a savvy media campaign\, conducting covert meetings with antiwar activists\, and most astonishingly\, helping to code secret letters to their imprisoned husbands. \nIn a page-turning work of narrative non-fiction\, Heath Hardage Lee tells the story of these remarkable women for the first time. The League of Wives is certain to be on everyones must-read list.

He’s the man who took $400\,000 and co-founded Blackstone\, the investment firm that manages over $500 billion (as of January 2019). He’s the CEO whose views are sought by heads of state. He’s the billionaire philanthropist who founded Schwarzman Scholars\, this century’s version of the Rhodes Scholarship\, in China. But behind these achievements is a man who has spent his life learning and reflecting on what it takes to achieve excellence\, make an impact\, and live a life of consequence. \nFolding handkerchiefs in his fathers linen shop\, Schwarzman dreamed of a larger life\, filled with purpose and adventure. His grades and athleticism got him into Yale. After starting his career in finance with a short stint at a financial firm called DLJ\, Schwarzman began working at Lehman Brothers where he ascended to run the mergers and acquisitions practice. He eventually partnered with his mentor and friend Pete Peterson to found Blackstone\, vowing to create a new and different kind of financial institution. \nBuilding Blackstone into the leading global financial institution it is today didn’t come easy. Schwarzman focused intensely on culture\, hiring great talent\, and establishing processes that allow the firm to systematically analyze and evaluate risk. Schwarzman’s simple mantra don’t lose money has helped Blackstone become a leading private equity and real estate investor\, and manager of alternative assets for institutional investors globally. Both he and the firm are known for the rigor of their investment process\, their innovative approach to deal making\, the diversification of their business lines\, and a conviction to be the best at everything they do. \nSchwarzman is also an active philanthropist\, having given away more than a billion dollars. In philanthropy\, as in business\, he is drawn to situations where his capital and energy can be applied to drive transformative solutions and change paradigms\, notably in education. He uses the skills learned over a lifetime in finance to design\, establish\, and support impactful and innovative organizations and initiatives. His gifts have ranged from creating a new College of Computing at MIT for the study of artificial intelligence\, to establishing a first-of-its-kind student and performing arts center at Yale\, to enabling the renovation of the iconic New York Public Library\, to founding the Schwarzman Scholars fellowship program at Tsinghua University in Beijing the single largest philanthropic effort in Chinas history from international donors. \nSchwarzman’s story is an empowering\, entertaining\, and informative guide for anyone striving for greater personal impact. From deal making to investing\, leadership to entrepreneurship\, philanthropy to diplomacy\, Schwarzman has lessons for how to think about ambition and scale\, risk and opportunities\, and how to achieve success through the relentless pursuit of excellence. Schwarzman not only offers readers a thoughtful reflection on all his own experiences\, but in doing so provides a practical blueprint for success. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR: Stephen A. Set in 1889\, in Charleston\, South Carolina\, Robinsons tale weaves her family’s journal entries and letters with a novelists narrative grace\, and spans the life of her tragic hero\, Frank Dawson\, as he attempts to navigate the country’s new political\, social\, and moral landscape. \nDawson\, a man of fierce opinions\, came to this country as a young Englishman to fight for the Confederacy in a war he understood as a conflict over states rights. He later became the editor of the Charleston News and Courier\, finding a platform of real influence in the editorial column and emerging as a voice of the New South. With his wife and two children\, he tried to lead a life that adhered to his staunch principles: equal rights\, rule of law\, and nonviolence\, unswayed by the caprices of popular opinion. But he couldn’t control the political whims of his readers. As he wrangled diligently in his columns with questions of citizenship\, equality\, justice\, and slavery\, his newspaper rapidly lost readership\, and he was plagued by financial worries. Nor could Dawson control the whims of the heart: his Swiss governess became embroiled in a tense affair with a drunkard doctor\, which threatened to stain his family’s reputation. In the end\, Dawson\, a man in many ways representative of the country at this time\, was felled by the very violence he vehemently opposed.

SUMMARY:Coffee with An Author: Leigh Jones Handal
DESCRIPTION:Local author & tour guide\, Leigh Jones Handal discusses her book\, Lost Charleston. The book of art and photography explores the history of lost pieces of our beautiful city\, Charleston. Attendees will enjoy coffee & donuts as they listen to the lecture. Free with RSVP- to RSVP call 843-723-9912 or email dreutter@charlestonlibrarysociety.org \nABOUT THE BOOK: The miracle of Charleston is that despite the very worst that man and nature has thrown at it–from earthquakes to hurricanes\, great fires to Civil War bombardment–so much of the city has been preserved. Lost Charleston shows what else could have been on display for tourists to visit had events been otherwise. Using classic archive images\, Charleston’s greatest architectural and cultural losses are documented in chronological order from 1861 through to 2018. \nApart from the grand buildings there are also elements of Charleston life precious to Charlestonians that have disappeared over time\, many of which will still resonate with the local community. These include beloved local restaurants\, annual festivals\, the fishing fleet that DuBose Heyward wrote about in his novel Porgy\, a famed local football team\, trolley cars\, and the Piggly Wiggly store. Plus there’s the Jenkins Orphanage Band whose dance moves gave the city its most famous export: The Charleston! \nA native South Carolinian\, Leigh Jones Handal has been an avid student of Low Country history since she was a Brownie Scout. She is co-editor of the City of Charleston’s official Tour Guide Training Manual and organized Historic Charleston Foundation’s annual spring house-and-garden tours for 13 years\, as well as the Preservation Society of Charleston’s Fall home tours. A graduate of the College of Charleston\, Leigh has been a licensed tour guide for more than 20 years. She appears regularly to talk about local history on television network\, Lowcountry Live.

He will discuss the stories\, vanities\, gossip and political maneuvers behind their portraits and examine how the depictions of them as seductresses and sirens should be viewed through the filter of their roles and achievements. English playwright and poet John Dryden may have hoped in 1661 for a world in which “every father govern’d as a King\,” but reality for 17th century Restoration England women of the royal household was not easy. The court was hedonistic and dangerous. Cleavage and a quick wit were weapons to be employed for advancement and royal mistresses were often capable strategists\, who invisibly influenced society. They were portrayed in portraits as either virtuous or lascivious—extreme ends of the moral spectrum. \nOne of the most strategically astute mistresses and the favourite of Charles II was Barbara Villiers\, Countess of Castlemaine\, who was infamous for performing a sex act on a 14th-century mummified corpse of a bishop. Despite being deemed a “harlot”\, she is rarely depicted in portraits as a seductress\, but rather as a humble shepherdess or a religious figure. Frances Teresa Stuart\, later Duchess of Richmond and Lennox\, who seemed to have achieved the impossible in resisting the sexual advances of the King\, is depicted as Diana the virgin huntress. Nell Gwynne\, who worked as a scantily clad orange seller to theatre audiences before crescendoing to a royal mistress\, is frequently depicted with fully exposed breasts. The court of Charles II was extravagant\, sensuous and treacherous\, but it was also a place where ambitious female poets\, artists\, preachers (who sometimes preached naked) and actors\, among others could excel. \nArt consultant and popular Royal Oak speaker Angus Haldane will illustrate the lives of notorious mistresses\, faithful wives\, and creative figures who set the court aflame with their intrigue\, brazen manipulation and talent. Mr. Haldane will discuss the stories\, vanities\, gossip and political manoeuvres behind their portraits and examine how the depictions of them as seductresses and sirens should be viewed through the filter of their roles and achievements.

At a time when women were expected to be homemakers\, she set her sights on Stanford University. When she graduated near the top of her law school class in 1952\, no firm would even interview her. But Sandra Day O’Connors story is that of a woman who repeatedly shattered glass ceilings doing so with a blend of grace\, wisdom\, humor\, understatement\, and cowgirl toughness. \nShe became the first ever female majority leader of a state senate. As a judge on the Arizona Court of Appeals\, she stood up to corrupt lawyers and humanized the law. When she arrived at the United States Supreme Court\, appointed by President Ronald Reagan in 1981\, she began a quarter-century tenure on the Court\, hearing cases that ultimately shaped American law. Diagnosed with cancer at fifty-eight\, and caring for a husband with Alzheimers\, O’Connor endured every difficulty with grit and poise. \nWomen and men who want to be leaders and be first in their own lives who want to learn when to walk away and when to stand their ground will be inspired by O’Connors example. This is a remarkably vivid and personal portrait of a woman who loved her family\, who believed in serving her country\, and who\, when she became the most powerful woman in America\, built a bridge forward for all women. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR:\nEvan Thomas is the author of ten books\, including the New York Times bestsellers John Paul Jones\, Sea of Thunder\, and Being Nixon. SUMMARY:Speaker Series: Kent Alexander & Kevin Salwen
DESCRIPTION:Join Kent Alexander & Kevin Salwen as the discuss their new book\, The Suspect: An Olympic Bombing\, the FBI\, the Media\, and Richard Jewell\, the Man Caught in the Middle. The book is a masterful true-crime account of the 1996 Centennial Olympic Park bombing that captured the world’s attention\, and the heroic security guard-turned-suspect at the heart of it all. \nWith a Clint Eastwood film about this story being released the same week\, take the opportunity to hear from the contributing sources to the Warner Bros.’ film\, Richard Jewell starring Sam Rockwell\, Kathy Bates\, Jon Hamm\, Olivia Wilde and Paul Walter Hauser right here at the Charleston Library Society! \nTickets for this event are $5 for members and $10 for nonmembers. to purchase tickets\, call 843-723-9912 or click here.\n\nAbout the Book:\nOn July 27\, 1996\, a hapless former cop turned hyper-vigilant security guard named Richard Jewell spotted a suspicious bag in Atlantas Centennial Olympic Park\, the town square of the 1996 Summer Games. Inside was a bomb\, the largest of its kind in FBI and ATF history. Minutes later\, the bomb detonated amid a crowd of fifty thousand people. But thanks to Jewell\, it only wounded 111 and killed two\, not the untold scores who would have otherwise died. With the eyes of the world on Atlanta\, the Games continued. But the pressure to find the bomber was intense. Within seventy-two hours\, Jewell went from the hero to the FBI’s main suspect. The news leaked and the intense focus on the guard forever changed his life. The worst part: It let the true bomber roam free to strike again. \nWhat really happened that evening during the Olympic Games? The attack left a mark on American history\, but most of what we remember is wrong. In a triumph of reporting and access in the tradition of the best investigative journalism\, former U.S. Attorney Kent Alexander and former Wall Street Journal reporter Kevin Salwen reconstruct all the events leading up to\, during\, and after the Olympic bombing from mountains of law enforcement evidence and the extensive personal records of key players\, including Richard himself. \nThe Suspect\, the culmination of more than five years of reporting\, is a gripping story of the rise of domestic terrorism in America\, the advent of the 24/7 news cycle\, and an innocent mans fight to clear his name. \nAbout the Authors:\nKent Alexander was the US Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia at the time of the 1996 Olympics. He spent hundreds of hours in meetings with the FBI about the bombing\, and ultimately\, he wrote and hand-delivered Jewell’s clearance letter. \nJournalist Kevin Salwen is a former Wall Street Journal columnist and an editor who ran southeastern coverage for the paper during the Olympic Games.

SUMMARY:Speaker Series: Wayne Clough
DESCRIPTION:Hear from the Former Secretary of The Smithsonian Institution\, Wayne Clough\, as he talks about his book\, Things New and Strange: A Southerners Journey through the Smithsonian Collections at the south’s oldest cultural institution. The book uncovers the tapestry of treasures held by the Smithsonian collections that originate from the South and highlight the region’s history. \nTickets for this event are $5 for members and $10 for nonmembers. To purchase tickets\, call 843-723-9912 or click here. \nAbout the Book:\nThings New and Strange chronicles a research quest undertaken by G. Wayne Clough\, the first secretary of the Smithsonian Institution born in the South. Soon after retiring from the Smithsonian\, Clough decided to see what the Smithsonian collections could tell him about South Georgia\, where he had spent most of his childhood in the 1940s and 1950s. The investigations that followed\, which began as something of a quixotic scavenger hunt\, expanded as Clough discovered that the collections had many more objects and documents from South Georgia than he had imagined. These objects illustrate important aspects of southern culture and history and also inspire reflections about how South Georgia has changed over time. \nAbout the Author:\nG. WAYNE CLOUGH is secretary emeritus of the Smithsonian Institution. Clough\, who currently lives in Atlanta\, directed the Smithsonian from 2008-2014\, and was president of the Georgia Institute of Technology from 1994-2008. SUMMARY:Lifelong Learning: Universities in Decline with Dr. John S. Cowan – Part 1
DESCRIPTION:Lifelong Learning: Universities in Decline Part 1 with Dr. John S. Cowan \nUniversities in Decline: A Review of What Has Gone Wrong and What Can Be Done About It (Part 1)\nTickets for this morning lifelong learning class are $20 for members and $25 for nonmembers. If you are interested in participating in both this class and attending the Part 2 lecture the following evening two-event packages are for sale for $25 for members and $35 for nonmembers. For tickets\, call 843-723-9912 or click here. \nNorth American universities have had a rough ride over the past 30 years. The widespread institutional response to the challenges they have been facing has usually involved some dumbing down of those undergraduate programs not regulated by external professional bodies\, steep fee increases\, balancing the books by enrollment and class size increases\, a systemic failure to understand the underlying purpose of a liberal education\, and\, more recently\, some problems maintaining both academic freedom and free speech\, (along with a peculiar conflation of these two very distinct concepts). Government in both the USA and Canada has further exacerbated the difficulties by adopting counterproductive methods for targeting public investment in research. Some of the difficulties have been exacerbated by some of the policies and practices in the primary and secondary education systems.\nWhile the university world has deployed some minor antidotes to these problems\, a case could be made that the sector is in slow but real decline. We will take a hard look at the underlying causes\, both within and outside the institutions\, and explore some possible remedies.\nDr. John Scott Cowan has held senior roles at a number of universities (bio appended) and\, in a national capacity in Canada\, handled crises in over 20 universities. He will give a comprehensive tour of these issues\, and suggest some possible remedies\, followed by a half hour discussion. He will speak at 11:30 on Wednesday\, Jan 15\, and the event will end at 1:30PM. A box lunch is provided. \nABOUT DR. COWAN:\nJohn Scott Cowan studied physics\, and then physiology at Toronto. A post-doc at Laval University preceded 24 years at the University of Ottawa as professor\, Chair of Physiology\, and as Vice-President. He was Vice-Principal at Queens University before becoming Principal of the Royal Military College of Canada (RMC) 1999-2008. RMC is the university of the Canadian Armed Forces. He has been President of the Canadian Federation of Biological Societies\, the Canadian Physiological Society\, and the Canadian Association of University Business Officers. Also active in labour relations for over 40 years\, he has been a negotiator\, arbitrator\, teacher\, and the first Senior Advisor on Labour Relations to the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada. \nDespite having an extensive research career in his first discipline\, he has also had a long involvement in defence issues\, starting with a monograph on defence policy in 1963.\nHe was President of the Conference of Defence Associations Institute 2008-2012\, and was Chair of the Defence Science Advisory Board of Canada (DSAB) 2010-2013 (now called the Defence Advisory Board of Canada). He has received the Queens Golden Jubilee Medal (2002) and Diamond Jubilee Medal (2012)\, the Sovereigns Medal for Volunteers (2018)\, and the Canadian Armed Forces Medallion for Distinguished Service (2008). His current RMC status is Principal Emeritus\, and in 2009 he received a Doctor of Military Science (honoris causa) from RMC for his contributions to the profession of arms. He was also the Honorary Colonel of the Princess of Wales Own Regiment till early 2017. He is Vice Chair and Director of Research of the Hill 70 Memorial project.\nHe has also flown over 60 aircraft types\, and is somewhat deaf from a few thousand hours flying the T6/SNJ\, and so does not mind at all if people shout at him.

SUMMARY:SOLD OUT – Speaker Series: Mo Rocca
DESCRIPTION:Join ‘CBS Sunday Morning’ correspondent & humorist Mo Rocca as he goes beyond his #1 hit podcast Mobituaries with an entertaining discussion on his book featuring new accounts of the lives of the famous and the obscure\, MOBITUARIES: Great Lives Worth Reliving. \nTicket packages to this hysterical evening are as follows. Package A: $30 for one person including a signed copy of MOBITUARIES: Great Lives Worth Reliving. Package B: $45 for two people including a signed copy of MOBITUARIES: Great Lives Worth Reliving. To purchase tickets\, call 843-723-9912 or click here. \nABOUT THE BOOK:\nMo Rocca loves obituaries — the sweeping drama of a life packed into a few inches of print\, as he puts it. Indeed\, a great one can feel like a movie trailer for an Oscar-winning biopic\, leaving the reader breathless. \nBut not every notable life has gotten the send-off it deserves. Rocca decided to right that wrong\, profiling the people who have long interested him on Mobituaries\, the #1 hit podcast. This fascination led him further into the past\, uncovering more stories than could be contained in a podcast season. The result is “MOBITUARIES: Great Lives Worth Reliving”\, a volume that complements the podcast with brand new investigations into the lives of entertainers\, sports stars\, founding fathers\, and more. Even if you know the names\, you’ve never understood why they matter . . . until now. \nABOUT THE AUTHORS:\nMo Rocca is a correspondent for CBS Sunday Morning\, host of The Henry Fords Innovation Nation\, and host and creator of the Cooking Channels My Grandmothers Ravioli\, in which he learned to cook from grandmothers and grandfathers across the country. He’s also a frequent panelist on NPRs hit weekly quiz show Wait\, Wait Don’t Tell Me! Rocca spent four seasons as a correspondent on Comedy Centrals The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. He began his career in TV as a writer and producer for the Emmy and Peabody Award-winning PBS children’s series Wishbone. As an actor\, Mo starred on Broadway in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Mo is the author of All the Presidents Pets\, a historical novel about White House pets and their role in presidential decision-making. \nJonathan Greenberg is a professor of English at Montclair State University and an Emmy Award-winning children’s television writer. His screenwriting credits include the series Rugrats\, Arthur\, and Hey Arnold!\, and the feature film\, Recess: Schools Out. He has written two scholarly books\, including\, most recently\, The Cambridge Introduction to Satire from Cambridge University Press.

SUMMARY:Music at the Library: Adryn Sumner – Lit Classical
DESCRIPTION:Bravo. Welcome rebels\, dissenters and revolutionaries. Good on you. \nYou took the first step in checking out the OGs of the Classical World. We can all agree that music makes the world go ’round and we have the Classical Greats to thank for it. \nSo many of the musical artists you follow today credit their early classical training as inspiration and often borrow structure\, theory and full on melodies from the bank of Classical genius to create the music you love. Go straight to the source and meet the artists who pushed boundaries\, broke through barriers and shook the system further than any artists today all while living in a world filled with wars\, loves won and lost\, personal defeats and tragedies\, heartbreaks and public humiliations in tell-all books. You know – life as we know it today. \nThey starved for their art\, made bad decisions and partied until dawn. Sound familiar? These artists are sharing their truths with you through their music the same way you’re hearing lyrics in your earbuds. In a world dominated by everything new\, now and happening\, meet the artists who represent what’s lit and relevant today. \nJoin us for Adryn Sumner’s Lit Classical\, a concert showing us different perspectives on well-known classical composers. Pianist ADRYN performs and introduces you to the human side of some of the greatest composers and musicians of all time. You’ll see just how much you relate to these geniuses and understand the messages they are sharing through their timeless music. \nTickets for this concert are $25 for members and $35 for nonmembers. For tickets\, call 843-723-9912 or click here \nThis concert is generously sponsored by The Martello Family.

SUMMARY:A Summer with Southern Authors: David Cox\, Robert Cox\, & Maud Cox
DESCRIPTION:The Charleston Library Society happily announces the launch of a community partnership with Evening Post Books & Buxton Books.  Beginning this summer\, we will offer substantive\, informative and entertaining “virtual” programs until the Library Society can resume onsite gatherings. Convening every other Thursday at 4:30PM\, the series will present a diverse group of Southern Authors as they discuss their works and the influence of the South in their worlds. \nJoin David Cox\, Robert Cox\, and Maud Cox as they discuss their book\, Dirty Secrets\, Dirty War\, with Polly Buxton\, Pierre Manigault\, and Mitch Pugh from the Post and Courier in this digital event addressing journalistic freedom in South America. An RSVP is required to attend this event. To RSVP\, click here. \nAll attendees will receive an email invitation to the Zoom event on Wednesday\, May 27th. For any questions\, contact Dutch Reutter at dreutter@charlestonlibrarysociety.org \nABOUT THE BOOK: \nFrom 1976-1983\, an estimated 30\,000 people disappeared in Argentina. They were victims of the “Dirty War” – a brutal campaign designed by the government to root out possible subversives. Those suspected of being dissidents were kidnapped and taken to secret detention centers. Most were tortured and then killed – never seen again. \nRobert J. Cox\, editor of the Buenos Aires Herald\, did what few others were willing to do – he told the truth about what was happening. Every day his newspaper reported on the kidnappings and killings. He challenged those in power – asking questions and demanding answers. Cox’s commitment to reporting the truth made him a hero to the families of the disappeared\, but an enemy of the state. \nThis is the remarkable story of one man’s courage in the face of adversity. It is the story of a man dedicated to protecting the freedom of the press and to protecting his family. It is the story of those who disappeared and the man who stayed in order to tell their stories. \nCox’s story is told by his son David who grew up under the pall of terrorism\, but was inspired by his father’s “great courage to write what was true.” He has written the book that his father could not. \nABOUT THE COX FAMILY \nDavid Cox\, son of Bob and Maud Cox\, has been a reporter for numerous international publications\, including the Miami Herald\, the Sunday Times\, Clarin\, La Nacion\, and Perfil. He worked for the Buenos Aires Herald\, and the International Herald Tribune among other newspapers. \nHis first book\, coauthored in Spanish with Damian Nabot\, about the robbery of Juan Peron’s severed hands\, won international acclaim. The English version of the book\, Unveiling the Enigma\, The Secret behind the Defiling of Peron s Corpse will be published in 2008 in the U.S. A version of Dirty Secrets\, Dirty War was published in Spanish and titled\, En Honor a la Verdad\, Memorias del Exilio de Robert Cox. \nCox is a graduate of the College of Charleston and earned an M.A. in mass communications from the University of South Carolina. He is currently a journalist with CNN in Atlanta. \nRobert J. Cox has been a journalist for nearly six decades. After 20 years with the Buenos Aires Herald\, he was a visiting scholar at the Wilson Center in Washington in 1980 and a Nieman Fellow at Harvard\, 1980-81. He became assistant editor of the News and Courier (now the Post and Courier) in Charleston\, S.C.\, in 1982. \nCox was awarded the Maria Moors Cabot Medal from Columbia University\, New York; Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to international journalism; Editor of the Year (Grenada Television\, Great Britain\, 1980). He served as President of the Inter American Press Association from 2001 to 2002.SS
