SUMMARY:Speaker Series: David N. Schwartz
DESCRIPTION:Dr. David N. Schwartz will discuss his recent biography\, The Last Man Who Knew Everything- The Life and Times of Enrico Fermi\, Father of the Nuclear Age. This event is free and open to the public. To RSVP\, call 843-723-9912 or email dreutter@charlestonlibrarysociety.org \nIn 1942\, a team at the University of Chicago achieved what no one had before: a nuclear chain reaction. At the forefront of this breakthrough stood Enrico Fermi. Straddling the ages of classical physics and quantum mechanics\, equally at ease with theory and experiment\, Fermi truly was the last man who knew everything–at least about physics. But he was also a complex figure who was a part of both the Italian Fascist Party and the Manhattan Project\, and a less-than-ideal father and husband who nevertheless remained one of history’s greatest mentors. Based on new archival material and exclusive interviews\, The Last Man Who Knew Everything lays bare the enigmatic life of a colossus of twentieth century physics. \nDavid N. Schwartz holds a B.A. from Stanford University and a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has worked at the US Department of State\, the Brookings Institution\, and Goldman Sachs in both London and New York. He has published widely on US strategic nuclear weapons policy\, NATO\, and foreign policy. He is the author of the recently published biography of Enrico Fermi\, “The Last Man Who Knew Everything: The Life and Times of Enrico Fermi\, Father of the Nuclear Age\,” (Basic Books). He lives in New York with his wife Susan. His father\, Melvin Schwartz\, shared the 1988 Nobel Prize in Physics for the discovery of the muon neutrino.

SUMMARY:Speaker Series: Cinelle Barnes
DESCRIPTION:Local author Cinelle Barnes will be joined in conversation with Jeanette Guinn\, the Host of SC Public Radio(Arts Daily) to discuss her incredible memoir\, Monsoon Mansion. To RSVP\, please call 843-723-9912 or email dreutter@charlestonlibrarysociety.org \nTold with a lyrical\, almost-dreamlike voice as intoxicating as the moonflowers and orchids that inhabit this world\, Monsoon Mansion is a harrowing yet triumphant coming-of-age memoir exploring the dark\, troubled waters of a family’s rise and fall from grace in the Philippines. It would take a young warrior to survive it. \nCinelle Barnes was barely three years old when her family moved into Mansion Royale\, a stately ten-bedroom home in the Philippines. Filled with her mother’s opulent social aspirations and the gloriously excessive evidence of her father’s self-made success\, it was a girl’s storybook playland. But when a monsoon hits\, her father leaves\, and her mother’s terrible lover takes the reins\, Cinelle’s fantastical childhood turns toward tyranny she could never have imagined. Formerly a home worthy of magazines and lavish parties\, Mansion Royale becomes a dangerous shell of the splendid palace it had once been. \nIn this remarkable ode to survival\, Cinelle creates something magical out of her truth—underscored by her complicated relationship with her mother. Through a tangle of tragedy and betrayal emerges a revelatory journey of perseverance and strength\, of grit and beauty\, and of coming to terms with the price of family—and what it takes to grow up. \nCinelle Barnes is an essayist\, memoirist\, and educator with a BA in media studies in journalism from Hunter College and a master of fine arts in creative writing from Converse College. She is a fellow of the Kundiman Creative Nonfiction Intensive at Fordham University and the Voices of the Nations Arts at the University of Pennsylvania\, a founding member of the C.D. Wright Women Writers Conference\, and a presenter-member for the Creative Writing Studies Organization. Her writing has appeared in Literary Hub\, Skirt\, Hub City Press’s online anthology\, and TAYO Literary Magazine\, among others. Books have been the one constant in her life—through her tumultuous childhood in the Philippines\, her years living as an undocumented immigrant in New York City\, her time as a new bride living in the American South\, and as she completed her MFA program and began writing about her secrets. She lives between two states with her husband and daughter: New York\, where she is always inspired to write\, and South Carolina\, where she can be close to the ocean. Find her online at www.cinellebarnes.com\, and follow her on Instagram @cinellebarnesbooks.

SUMMARY:Wide Angle Lunches: Armand Derfner
DESCRIPTION:Wide Angle Lunch is a thought-provoking lunch hour in the peaceful surroundings of the Charleston Library Society while you fulfill your appetite in every way. \nArmand Derfner ~ Welcome Mat or No Trespassing Sign? Immigration in America \nArmand Derfner is no stranger to America’s immigration issues. Born in France to Polish Jews who had already fled their homeland in Hitler’s early days\, his family was forced to flee again as Nazis invaded France and the Vichy government proved incapable of protecting its more vulnerable citizens. This time\, their adopted homeland would be United States\, immigrating at a time when the Statue of Liberty’s welcome mat often seemed far more like a No Trespassing sign. \nIn his talk\, Mr. Derfner\, a longtime human rights lawyer\, will discuss the tumultuous and very mixed history of immigration in the United States\, from the mostly open doors of the early days to years of Isolationism to today’s refugee crises\, border walls\, and growing xenophobia. Boxed lunches will be served. \nArmand Derfner has been practicing civil rights law for over 54 years. His focus on voting rights began with representing voters in Greenwood\, Mississippi\, in August of 1965 on the first day of the Voting Rights Act. He helped shape the Voting Rights Act through his numerous Supreme Court arguments and his work with Congress. \nFor more than 20 years\, Mr. Defner worked on two long-running suits to desegregate and end racial inequality in the higher education systems in Alabama and Mississippi. In addition he has been involved in numerous other civil rights and public interest cases\, including representing civil rights demonstrators\, death row inmates\, victims of employment discrimination\, targets of free speech. In 2009\, the American Bar Association named his firm Public Interest Lawyers of the Year. \n$20 members/ $30 nonmembers for individual sessions \nOR \nSeries Pass: $60 members/ $90 nonmembers \nTo purchase tickets\, call 843-723-9912 or click here

SUMMARY:Speaker Series: Heather Lyn Mann
DESCRIPTION:Join the Charleston Library Society and the Sophia Institute in experiencing one woman’s death-defying\, life-affirming journey on the open ocean. To RSVP\, call 843-723-9912 or email dreutter@charlestonlibrarysociety.org \n“Irma’s eye went right over top of us on September 6th. I was alone on the oceanfront property during the entire time—reading Ocean of Insight. It was the scariest time of my life and your book put me in a perspective which allowed for a bit of solace…. Each time another gust would pound my doors\, I would just get deeper and deeper into your readings.” \nWilliam Matthews\, Virgin Gorda\, BVI \nHeather Lyn Mann was a battle-weary environmental advocate in Madison\, Wisconsin\, struggling over what to do about climate change when she and her husband decided to explore the Atlantic on a small sloop. This memoir of six years living afloat is a chronological unfolding of disasters and discoveries—life–threatening storms\, the boredom of isolation\, societies on the brink of extinction\, sinking ships\, colorful Caribbean characters\, near collisions\, a pirate scare\, and more. Throughout\, the ocean becomes Mann’s teacher\, transforming her with uncompromising lessons on how to harmonize with natural order\, the exact moments and ways to let in fearlessness\, resilience\, happiness\, impermanence\, balance\, compassion\, skillful action\, and beginner’s mind. \nHer suspenseful\, sometimes hilarious\, and always heart–warming journey of body and mind\, shaped by ancient Buddhist teachings\, entertains as it charts reality’s depths and danger zones so arm–chair adventurers\, spiritual seekers\, and the climate concerned can navigate tumultuous waters and arrive together on the shore of planetary well–being. \nSpiritual Ecologist Heather Lyn Mann is a practitioner of Buddhism\, sailing\, and mindful advocacy. Mann founded and led the not-for-profit Center for Resilient Cities—an organization mobilizing inner–city residents to restore natural beauty and function in damaged neighborhood landscapes. She also co–edits Touching the Earth: A Newsletter of Earth Holding Actions in the Plum Village Tradition. In 2007\, together with her husband and cat\, Mann set sail on a 15\,000–nautical–mile\, six–year voyage.

DESCRIPTION:Join us as we welcome Johnna Neuman in conversation as she discusses her most recent book Gilded Suffragists: The New York Socialites Who Fought for Women’s Right To Vote. To RSVP\, call 843-723-9912 or email dreutter@charlestonlibrarysociety.org. \nGilded Suffragists: The New York Socialites Who Fought for Women’s Right To Vote\, tells the fascinating story of more than two hundred New York social figures — Astors\, Belmonts\, Harrimans\, Vanderbilts and their circle — who joined the women’s suffrage movement in the 1910s. Chronicled by a vibrant newspaper industry for their extravagant lifestyles\, they became the media darlings of their day. And when these glamorous socialites embraced the suffrage campaign\, they became the first celebrities to endorse a political cause in the twentieth century. Gilded Suffragists excavates their identities – until now hidden behind the label of Mrs. Somebody Else – and describes their rivalries for power within the suffrage movement\, the debate over chivalry that complicated their mission after the sinking of the Titanic and their political conflicts during the First World War. \nJohanna Neuman is a writer\, historian and scholar in residence at American University in Washington\, D.C. An award-winning journalist and former Nieman Fellow at Harvard\, she covered the White House\, the State Department and Congress for the Los Angeles Times and USA Today.

Now\, drawing on unpublished manuscripts\, letters\, diaries\, and land and financial records\, Caroline Fraser―the editor of the Library of America edition of the Little House series―masterfully fills in the gaps in Wilder’s biography. Revealing the grown-up story behind the most influential childhood epic of pioneer life\, she also chronicles Wilder’s tumultuous relationship with her journalist daughter\, Rose Wilder Lane\, setting the record straight regarding charges of ghostwriting that have swirled around the books. \nThe Little House books\, for all the hardships they describe\, are paeans to the pioneer spirit\, portraying it as triumphant against all odds. But Wilder’s real life was harder and grittier than that\, a story of relentless struggle\, rootlessness\, and poverty. It was only in her sixties\, after losing nearly everything in the Great Depression\, that she turned to children’s books\, recasting her hardscrabble childhood as a celebratory vision of homesteading―and achieving fame and fortune in the process\, in one of the most astonishing rags-to-riches episodes in American letters. \nSpanning nearly a century of epochal change\, from the Indian Wars to the Dust Bowl\, Wilder’s dramatic life provides a unique perspective on American history and our national mythology of self-reliance. With fresh insights and new discoveries\, Prairie Fires reveals the complex woman whose classic stories grip us to this day.

SUMMARY:Speaker Series: Frank Blair
DESCRIPTION:Join the Library Society in welcoming Frank Blair as he speaks about his recent book\, The Schooner Maggie B\, telling the story of his true Southern Ocean circumnavigation\, around the great capes\, filling the imagination of every serious\, as well as armchair\, sailor. To RSVP\, call 843-723-9912 or email dreutter@charlestonlibrarysociety.org \nIn 2005\, Frank Blair built a 63-foot wooden schooner in Nova Scotia and\, with an all-volunteer crew\, set off on her two-year maiden voyage around the world. Many sailing books tell of racing hardships\, disasters at sea\, days adrift in a life raft\, or being dismasted off Cape Horn. This book is about a great success: a sailor’s dream voyage well executed. The Schooner Maggie B tells of breakdowns but also the recoveries\, great ports and how to surmount their bureaucracies\, the sublime pleasures of a clear night watch and other days with fresh gales\, and the apprehension and joys of 4000-mile blue water passages. Come along! \nFrank Blair served in the US Navy for five years as a fighter pilot flying single-seat fighters off of carriers in the Mediterranean and the Western Pacific\, and received five Air Medals for low-level reconnaissance over North Vietnam. Flying skills honed sailing skills: radio\, navigation\, meteorology and appreciation for Bernoulli’s Principle. His love of sailing began in childhood and he worked Hurricane Island Outward Bound School for 20 years teaching seamanship. The US Coast Guard licensed him as a Master for Sail and Power. He became a Shellback en route to Australia from Vietnam and has served as a Stand-In for Neptune twice since. He lives in Maine and on his new schooner\, FARFARER.

He comes from a rich background of artists and musicians\, most notably the musical genius Edmund Jenkins\, a brilliant composer and performer in the genres of Jazz and Classical music from the early 1900s. He was internationally renowned and is remembered for his significant contributions to the development of jazz in the United States\, via Charleston\, South Carolina. Tuffus\, a versatile composer and master musician in his own right\, started piano lessons at the early age of five. His father\, a teacher\, and his mother\, a visual artist\, both armed with knowledge of their rich musical heritage\, made it a point to provide Tuffus with substantial musical exposure. He began by studying classical piano\, which he did for roughly two decades. At the age of 12 he explored gospel music at a local Roxbury church where he started playing piano with the men’s choir. \nIn his early teens\, Tuffus joined Berklee College of Music’s City Music Program\, where\nhe began his formal training in jazz. Here is where his skills and talents as a musician\nmatured. The program offered him a laboratory to develop his compositions and a forum\nto perform with his peers. At 18\, Tuffus received the prestigious Walter Beasley Award\,\nwon the song writing competition at Berklee’s Five Week Summer Program\, and was\nsubsequently awarded the full-tuition “City Music Continuing Scholarship” to study in\nBerklee’s undergraduate program (class of ‘05). Here he dual-majored in Music\nBusiness and Film Scoring while engaging in extensive studies in composition and\nperformance. \nTuffus’ composition skills landed him a spot on Liz Walker’s CBS-TV morning show\nwhere he performed his original “African Breeze” with the Tuffus Zimbabwe Group. One\nof his original compositions was already being used weekly as the theme for this show.\nTuffus continued his education\, earning his Master of Music degree in Jazz Studies from\nNew York University. \nTuffus currently works as a keyboardist in the Saturday Night Live Band on NBC. He\nalso works in a number of bands such as Ron Ried’s “Sun Steel” band and Jovol Bell’s\n“Reality.” \n\nCharleston’s Quentin Baxter is a drummer/composer/educator/producer. A graduate of\nthe College of Charleston (Bachelor of Arts – Music Theory & Composition)\, Baxter\ncultivated his musical talents under the wings of regional legends/mentors Robert\nEphraim\, Oscar Rivers\, Jr\, Lonnie Hamilton III\, George Kenney\, Dr. David Maves\, Teddy\nAdams\, and Delbert Felix. \nCurrently touring worldwide with award-winning vocalist and composer René Marie and\nGrammy-nominated vocalist Freddy Cole\, Baxter regularly performs in many prestigious\nvenues and festivals. He’s performed at The Kennedy Center (Washington\, D.C.)\, Jazz\nat Lincoln Center (New York)\, Joy of Jazz Festival (South Africa)\, Toulouse Jazz\nFestival (France)\, Umbria Jazz Festival and Spoleto Festival dei Due Mondi (Italy)\, and\,\nof course\, Spoleto Festival USA in Charleston.

SUMMARY:Speaker Series: Jason Heller
DESCRIPTION:Charleston Library Society hosts Jason Heller for a night of funkadelic music and literary discussion about his new book Strange Stars unlike anything seen before in the Lowcountry. Come for the music\, stay for the stories and the Strange Stars cocktail. For tickets\, call 843-723-9912 or click here. $5 members/$10 nonmembers \nSpearheaded by Hugo Award winning author and music journalist Jason Heller (The New Yorker\, Rolling Stone\, Entertainment Weekly\, and more) in support of his latest book\, Strange Stars: David Bowie\, Pop Music\, and the Decade Sci-Fi Exploded\, the night will feature music\, conversation\, and a specialty Strange Stars cocktail. \nStrange Stars is a unique story\, featuring an exciting decade of music and one of its biggest icons: David Bowie. As the 1960s drew to a close\, Bowie slipped into the empty balcony of a London cinema to see 2001: A Space Odyssey. He emerged a changed man. As the 1970s progressed and mankind trained its telescopes on distant worlds\, Bowie would lead other rock stars to see the world of science fiction as the catalyst needed to continue the revolution begun in the sixties. \nStrange Stars explains how science fiction and music came to depend on each other throughout the decade. With Bowie as their leader\, Heller ties some of pop music’s most influential names into a single narrative including: Pink Floyd\, Jimi Hendrix\, Sun Ra\, Parliament-Funkadelic\, Kraftwerk\, Rush\, Devo\, and X-Ray Spex\, while also including the more obscure musicians of the decade who nonetheless helped influence the scene. \nAt the Charleston Library Society\, Jason Heller will be joined in conversation with local journalist/Charleston Library Society’s own Leah Rhyne as the two muse about writing\, research\, rock\, pop\, disco\, and all the music popular in the 70s. If you love music\, too\, this night’s for you. \nCopies of Strange Stars will be available for purchase as Jason Heller’s own carefully curated playlist of the music in his book is played through the evening. \nPraise for Strange Stars: \n“There’s never been anything like this before— a fantastic voyage through rock ‘n’ roll history\, decoding the sci-fi inspiration that’s always lurked at the heart of it. This brilliant book makes you hear whole new strains of weirdness in music you thought you already knew.” – Rob Sheffield\, author of On Bowie \n“Full of cosmic wisdom that will open your mind to alien melodies\, and also make you hear your favorite classic rock and funk in a whole new way… a totally indispensable guide.” — Charlie Jane Anders\, author of All the Birds in the Sky \n“Fans of popular music and sf alike will thoroughly enjoy this journey through the center of the 1970s.” –Library Journal\, starred review \n“Entertaining and instructive…Sci-fi geeks with a penchant for rock ‘n’ stomp\, prog excess\, and other flavors of pop will enjoy this one.” – Kirkus \n“An adventurous guide through 1970s music zeitgeists\, Heller’s work will pique the interests of those in search of something a little more cosmic.” – Publishers Weekly \n“Heller explores the music of the 1970s and uncovers sf influences and themes in surprising places… sci-fi buffs and music aficionados will find much to enjoy in this meticulously researched\, entertaining book.” – Booklist \nAbout Jason Heller: \nJason Heller is a Hugo Award-winning writer whose work has appeared in The New Yorker\, Rolling Stone\, Pitchfork\, The Atlantic\, NPR\, Entertainment Weekly\, and others. SUMMARY:Speaker Series: Christopher Swann
DESCRIPTION:In this gripping literary thriller\, Shadow of the Lions\, Christopher Swann will take you deep into the dark heart of privilege\, secrets\, and lies at an elite boys’ boarding school in Virginia. Atmospheric and full of twists\, this accomplished debut explores the nature of friendship\, betrayal\, and whether it is possible—ever—to escape the past. Swann\, an alumnus of a boarding school himself and now a teacher at a private day school\, brings to his storytelling an insider’s knowledge of the world he creates here\, the closed\, overheated atmosphere of the elite Blackburne School. To RSVP\, call 843-723-9912 or email dreutter@charlestonlibrarysociety.org \nAs the novel begins\, it has been almost ten years since Matthias graduated from Blackburne\, where his roommate and best friend\, Fritz\, vanished into the woods without a trace after the two boys had an argument. Matthias has long been haunted by the idea that he was somehow responsible for Fritz’s disappearance\, and now he finds himself stalled\, a professional failure\, a bad boyfriend\, an incomplete man. When he is offered the opportunity to return to Blackburne to teach English\, he sees it as a chance to put his life back together. But once on campus\, Matthias becomes driven to find out what happened to Fritz\, caught up in events that begin to spiral swiftly out of control. Along the way\, he must confront the shocking death of a student\, Fritz’s powerful Washington\, D.C.\, family\, and the particular politics of a prestigious prep school. \n“All stories have at their heart a mystery\, a question to be answered\,” says Swann. “The question at the heart of this book—what would happen if your best friend disappeared?—is one that haunts Matthias. But just as fascinating to me is what happens to the people left behind in the aftermath. What kind of shadow would such an event cast over your life?” \nIn the spirit of Donna Tartt’s The Secret History\, Shadow of the Lions is a smart mystery but also a late coming-of-age story of a broken man who must come to terms with his past to move on in his life. \nChristopher Swann is chair of the English department at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School in Atlanta\, where he has taught English for more than 20 years. He holds a PhD in creative writing from Georgia State University and has received honors from Georgia State University\, Washington and Lee University\, and the Heekin Group Foundations’ Tara Fellowship for Short Fiction. SUMMARY:Speaker Series: Timothy Boyce
DESCRIPTION:Join Timothy Boyce as he presents on his national book tour of the World War II concentration camp diary\, From Day to Day. To RSVP\, call 843-723-9912 or email dreutter@charlestonlibrarysociety.org \nHailed by The New Yorker as “among the most compelling documents to come out of the war\,” From Day to Day is a World War II concentration camp diary—one of only a handful ever translated into English—secretly written by Odd Nansen\, a Norwegian political prisoner. Arrested in January 1942\, Nansen\, son of polar explorer and humanitarian Fridtjof Nansen\, was held captive for the duration of the war in various Nazi camps in Norway and Germany. Nansen’s diary entries detail his longing for his wife and family\, his constantly frustrated hopes for release\, and his horror at the especially barbaric treatment reserved for the Jews. The diary brilliantly illuminates Nansen’s daily struggle\, not only to survive\, but to preserve his sanity and maintain his humanity in a world engulfed by fear and hate. \nTimothy Boyce practiced law for many years\, most recently serving as the Managing Partner of the Charlotte\, NC office of Dechert LLP\, a global law firm with offices in 14 countries. He holds an M.B.A. from The Wharton School of Finance\, and a J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School. He received a B.S. in Foreign Service from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service. Tim\, who currently lives in Tryon\, NC with his wife Tara\, two horses\, two dogs and two cats\, retired in 2014 to devote full time to writing.

SUMMARY:Royal Oak Presents – Behind Closed Doors: Stepping into Bloomsbury Rooms
DESCRIPTION:The Royal Oak Foundation presents Behind Closed Doors: Stepping into Bloomsbury Rooms with NINO STRACHEY \n$30 Special CLS member price (with co-sponsor code: 18FCHLIB) To purchase tickets call 212-480-2889\, x201 or click here. \nHead of Research and Specialist Advice for the National Trust\, Nino Strachey is descended from a family at the heart of the Bloomsbury Group. In her new book\, Rooms of Their Own\, Strachey explores the complicated\, interlocking lives of Virginia Woolf and Vita & Edward Sackville-West through their vivacious and vivid homes. Functioning as the bohemian backdrops for their unconventional lives\, Strachey will explore the homes that expressed each artist’s personality and show us how they forged special relationships. \nThis talk explores the homes of three writers linked to the Bloomsbury Group: Virginia Woolf\, Vita Sackville-West and Eddy Sackville-West. The Bloomsbury Group was a set of writers and artists who met in the Bloomsbury area of London\, challenging the conventions of their Victorian predecessors in person\, and in books like Lytton Strachey’s Eminent Victorians. Linked by a complex web of relationships\, Virginia\, Vita and Eddy created country retreats which expressed their unusual personalities. \nAt Monk’s House\, Virginia Woolf looked forward to the modern age\, favoring the bright colors and bold patterns of her favorite Bloomsbury artists Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant. At Sissinghurst\, Vita Sackville-West looked back to the past and the Elizabethan age\, filling her rooms with the romantic relics of former lovers. At Knole\, Vita’s first cousin Eddy mixed Sackville heirlooms with the vibrant works of his artist lovers Duncan Grant\, Stephen Tomlin and John Banting. Virginia Woolf combined the characters of Vita and Eddy in her novel Orlando—published in 1928 and set at Knole—creating a hero/heroine who changes their sex over time. \nDescended from a family at the heart of Bloomsbury\, Nino Strachey will offer a personal perspective on the stories revealed in her new book Rooms of Their Own: Eddy Sackville-West\, Virginia Woolf and Vita Sackville-West
