DESCRIPTION:The Santee Canal: the first inland navigation route from the Upcountry of the South Carolina Piedmont to the port of Charleston and the Atlantic Ocean\, finished in the early 19th century. The Charleston Library Society and Buxton Books are honored to host Dr. Richard Porcher\, one of three authors of The Santee Canal: South Carolina’s First Commercial Highway\, for a book tour exclusive presentation and discussion on his comprehensive story of SC’s historical accomplishment. Dr. Porcher\, a former Citadel professor and researcher of 33 years\, will be introduced by co-author and former Citadel colleague Elizabeth Connor\, M.Ed\, who in 2019 took a sabbatical to conduct background and field research for the publication with Dr. Porcher. Led by Dana Beach\, Founder & Director Emeritus-South Carolina Coastal Conservation League\, the discussion will dive into the research on the canal and divulge never-before-published historical plans\, maps\, and photographs from the book. \nTickets*: PURCHASE HERE \n$10 – Members or $15 – General Admission  \nAbout the Book: \nA history of one of America’s earliest canals and its impact on the people of the South Carolina Lowcountry \nCompleted in 1800\, the Santee Canal connected the Cooper\, Santee\, Congaree\, and Wateree rivers: the engineered waterway transformed the lives of many in the state and affected economic development in the Southeast region of the newly formed United States. In The Santee Canal\, authors Elizabeth Connor\, Dr. Richard Dwight Porcher Jr.\, and William Robert Judd provide an authoritative and richly illustrated history of one of America’s first canals. \nThe Santee Canal connected distant settlements\, reversed the economic fortunes of planters who altered the relationships between enslaved and enslavers\, and represented an important engineering achievement of the early canal-building era in the United States. This remarkable economic\, social\, and political story is brought to life by the stories of the many individuals who had a hand in building the canal. From the landowners through whose property it cut\, to the enslaved laborers who carved its path\, to the enigmatic chief engineer Johann Christian Senf—the individual and local perspectives on this grand undertaking ground this history in the life and times of late 18th-century South Carolina. \nConnor\, Porcher\, and Judd tell a comprehensive story of the canal’s origins and history. Imagery from historical and personal archives\, field research\, and technical drawings enhance the text\, allowing readers to appreciate the development\, evolution\, and effect of the Santee Canal on the land and the people of South Carolina. \nAbout Dr. Richard Porcher: \nRichard Dwight Porcher Jr.\, a native of Pinopolis in Berkeley County\, South Carolina\, currently resides in Mt. Pleasant. He graduated from Berkeley High School in 1957 and earned a BS in biology from the College of Charleston in 1962. Porcher received his Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina in 1974\, where he studied field botany under the noted botanist Dr. Wade T. Batson. In 1970\, he began a thirty-three-year tenure as a biology professor at The Citadel. \nIn 1995\, he published Wildflowers of the Carolina Lowcountry and Lower Pee Dee (USC Press). He is the senior author of Wildflowers of South Carolina\, published in October 2001 with Doug Rayner (USC Press). Porcher\, now Professor Emeritus at The Citadel since retiring in 2003\, previously served as Adjunct Full Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Clemson University. There\, he established the Wade T. Batson Endowment in Field Botany to support students studying the state’s flora and plant ecology. \nPorcher is currently photographing the wildflowers and plants of South Carolina\, with 1\,600 different species already documented. These photographs have been placed in the public domain. \nPorcher’s most recent publication is tonight’s subject matter\, The Santee Canal\, which he produced in collaboration with an assembled a team of historians and archaeologists. Porcher’s accolades include the 2006 Charleston Horticultural Society’s 1830 Award\, the 2008 South Carolina Environmental Awareness Award\, the 2015 Citadel School of Science and Mathematics Faculty Award\, The Order of the Palmetto in 2019\, and the Tom Dodd\, Jr. Award of Excellence by the Cullowhee Native Plant Conference in 2023. \nAbout Prof. Elizabeth Connor\, M.Ed.: \nElizabeth Connor\, MLS\, MEd is Professor Emerita of General Education at The Citadel\, the Military College of South Carolina. Prior to joining The Citadel\, Ms. Connor worked as an academic medical librarian in Maryland\, Saudi Arabia\, Connecticut\, South Carolina and the Commonwealth of Dominica. She has published numerous peer-reviewed articles\, chapters and books on a variety of library subjects including evidence-based practice\, building design\, reference services\, instructional services and Web 2.0 technologies.

DESCRIPTION:JUNE 10th – JUNE 14th \nTheme: Wild About Nature \nDuring our first week of Camp in the Stacks\, the children will enjoy activities\, both inside and out\, related to the beautiful world that surrounds us. We will include a nature walk and scavenger hunt in the garden\, along with our on-topic readings and fun crafts that we think your camper will dig! \n\n $250 for Members // $275 for Non-Members// $50 additional for the Lunch Bunch option\nTo reserve your camper’s spot\, please CLICK HERE. \nCAMP in the STACKS details: \n\n\n\n\nAges 5-8 years old are invited to attend.\nMonday – Friday\, from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. Drop-off and pick-up will be outside in front of our marble staircase. Here\, your children will be met by a CLS member who will escort your child into the Rabbit Hole to meet Kenna\, our wonderful teacher. If your child would prefer to be walked in by you\, there are a few “loading” parking spots available across the street that don’t require payment. Otherwise\, there are several parking meter spots on King. Pickup will be at 12:00 pm for Standard Campers and 1:00 pm for our Lunch Bunch Campers.\nWe are offering a “Lunch Bunch” hour option from 12:00-1:00 pm at the end of camp for an additional $50. CLS will not be providing lunch. If you’re choosing this addition\, please send your child’s lunch for a picnic outside in our beautiful garden\, weather permitting!  We have a refrigerator if needed. During this additional hour\, our campers will have an opportunity to listen to an audible book and/or have time for Choice Play in the designated stations of the Rabbit Hole once they’re finished with their lunch.\nEach day’s agenda will tentatively look like this: Begin with circle time\, followed by stories and two crafts. Our campers will be able to enjoy choice play with the toys and games available in the Rabbit Hole if they have free time.

DESCRIPTION:JUNE 24th – JUNE 28th \nTheme: Scientist in the Library \nDuring this week\, campers will experience their inner mad scientist as they explore like a naturalist and run experiments all week! \n\n $250 for Members // $275 for Non-Members// $50 additional for the Lunch Bunch option\nTo reserve your camper’s spot\, please CLICK HERE.  TICKETS SOLD OUT \nCAMP in the STACKS details: \n\n\n\n\nAges 5-8 years old are invited to attend.\nMonday – Friday\, from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. Drop-off and pick-up will be outside in front of our marble staircase. Here\, your children will be met by a CLS member who will escort your child into the Rabbit Hole to meet Kenna\, our wonderful teacher. If your child would prefer to be walked in by you\, there are a few “loading” parking spots available across the street that don’t require payment. Otherwise\, there are several parking meter spots on King. Pickup will be at 12:00 pm for Standard Campers and 1:00 pm for our Lunch Bunch Campers.\nWe are offering a “Lunch Bunch” hour option from 12:00-1:00 pm at the end of camp for an additional $50 . CLS will not be providing lunch. If you’re choosing this addition\, please send your child’s lunch for a picnic outside in our beautiful garden\, weather permitting!  We have a refrigerator\, if needed. During this additional hour\, our campers will have an opportunity to listen to an audible book and/or have time for Choice Play in the designated stations of the Rabbit Hole once they’re finished with their lunch.\nEach day’s agenda will tentatively look like this: Begin with circle time\, followed by stories and two crafts. Our campers will be able to enjoy choice play with the toys and games available in the Rabbit Hole if they have free time.

DESCRIPTION:CLS Book Club is FREE\, in-person\, and open to the public—whether you’ve finished the book\, are thinking about starting it\, or couldn’t make it past the halfway point. All that is required is an RSVP via the form below.  \nPlease note the author will not be in attendance.  \nAbout the Program: \nOffered a few times a year\, the CLS Book Club seeks to explore a wide range of topics\, authors and diversity within its book selections. Under this objective\, the Book Club also offers space for conversation\, perspectives and discourse. \nAn exploration of the book will be presented by the ambitious duo\, Susan Porter and Diana Hambleton\, after which the floor will open to discussion. \nAbout the Book: \n\n\nIn Table for Two\, Amor Towles shares some of his shorter fiction: six stories based in New York City and a novella set in Golden Age Hollywood. The New York stories\, most of which take place around the year 2000\, consider the fateful consequences that can spring from brief encounters and the delicate mechanics of compromise that operate at the heart of modern marriages. In Towles’s novel Rules of Civility\, the indomitable Evelyn Ross leaves New York City in September 1938 with the intention of returning home to Indiana. DESCRIPTION:You’re invited to join our devoted flag bearer\, Mr. Greg Kitchens\, as he represents CLS during the annual Carolina Day Parade procession from Washington Square to White Point Gardens. As one of the oldest institutions represented in this yearly celebration of the patriots across the state who played a role in helping America gain its independence\, we are honored to have a place near the front of the line. Hope to see you there! \nParade participants will gather at Washington Square\, located behind City Hall at 80 Broad Street\, at 11:00 AM. The parade ends at White Point Gardens. \nRSVP is requested—simply fill out the form below—but not required. For the full Carolina Day schedule\, check out the Palmetto Society’s website here.  \nWhat is Carolina Day? \nCarolina Day is the annual commemoration the Battle of Sullivan’s Island on June 28\, 1776. \nOn June 28\, 1776\, a small band of South Carolina Patriots defeated the British Royal Navy in the Battle of Sullivan’s Island. Troops\, led by Colonel William Moultrie\, were station at an incomplete palmetto log and sand fort near Breach Inlet. Soldiers defeated a British naval force of nine warships led by Commodore Sir Peter Parker as they attempted to invade Charlestown by way of the Harbor. After a nine-hour battle the ships were forced to abandon their efforts to occupy Charlestown. \nThe Liberty Flag was designed by Colonel William Moultrie and waved by Sergeant William Jasper to rally the troops during the battle. This scene was famously painted by Johannes Adam Simon Oertel\, a German-American artist.  The Liberty Flag became the basis for the Flag of South Carolina which bears an image of the same palmetto trees that were used to build Fort Moultrie. \nThe anniversary of the victory was celebrated locally starting in 1777\, when it was then known as Palmetto Day. The anniversary became know as Carolina Day in 1875. Fort Moultrie still holds a celebration each year to commemorate the victory over the British troops.

Every second Monday of the month\, we host our newest members of the CLS family for a fun and informative tour of the facility\, including key information on utilizing Library resources\, an exploration of some of the treasures from the CLS archives\, a visit to the Igoe Shakespeare Library\, concluding with a tour of our bindery and information about our conservation efforts. Questions are welcome throughout our time together. \nThe tour starts at 5pm\, and generally ends around 6pm.
