SUMMARY:Florida's Hidden Cold War
DESCRIPTION:For nearly a decade\, the Florida Legislature founded\, funded\, and supported the Johns Committee—an organization using the cover of communism to viciously attack marginalized groups in the Sunshine State. Spearheaded by Charley Johns\, a multi-term politician in a gerrymandered legislature\, the Committee was determined to eliminate any threats to the state’s conservative regime. Investigative journalist Robert W. Fieseler joins us to share his exposé on his research into a secret trove of primary source documents that have been decoded for the first time in history\, unveiling the truths about the Johns Committee and a vicious past that would prefer to be left undisturbed. American Scare dives into the history of Florida’s secret Cold War against Black and queer students and educators: a riveting account for those who want to understand the process by which history is preserved—and the ways the past impacts the present. \nIf you are unable to attend the event\, but would like to purchase one or more signed copies\, please visit Buxton Books here. \nAbout the Book \n\n\nA vital exposé for both our history and our present day\, American Scare tells the riveting story of how the Florida government destroyed the lives of Black and queer citizens in the twentieth century. In January 1959\, Art Copleston was escorted out of his college accounting class by three police officers. In a motel room\, blinds drawn\, he sat in front of a state senator and the legal counsel for the Florida Legislative Investigation Committee\, nicknamed the “Johns Committee.” His crime? Being a suspected homosexual. And the government of Florida would use any tactic at their disposal—legal or not—to get Copleston to admit it. Journalist Robert Fieseler unravels the mystery of what actually happened behind the closed doors of an inquisition that held ordinary citizens ransom to its extraordinary powers. The state of Florida would prefer that this history remain buried. Fieseler describes the heartbreaking ramifications for citizens of Florida whose lives were imperiled\, profiling marginalized residents with compassion and a determination to bring their devasting experiences to light at last. A propulsive\, human-centered drama\, with fascinating insight into Florida politics\, American Scare is a page-turning reckoning of our racist and homophobic past—and its chilling parallels to today.\n\n\nAbout the Author \nRobert Fieseler is a journalist investigating marginalized groups and a scholar excavating forgotten histories\, with a special focus on the American South. A National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association ‘Journalist of the Year’ and recipient of the Pulitzer Traveling Fellowship\, his debut book Tinderbox won seven awards\, including the Edgar Award\, and his reporting has appeared in Slate\, Commonweal and River Teeth. Fieseler’s second history book\, American Scare: Florida’s Hidden Cold War on Black and Queer Lives\, was a J. Anthony Lukas Work-in-Progress Award finalist. He is pursuing a PhD at Tulane University as a Mellon Fellow and lives with his husband on the gayest street in New Orleans. \n

SUMMARY:Life Long Learning: High Altitudes and Aspirations // Four-week Course
DESCRIPTION:Many dream of climbing the world’s highest peaks\, but few ever see it through. For those who do\, it takes careful planning\, perseverance\, and commitment. Join experienced climber and author\, David Schaeffer\, for a focused series about the art of mountain climbing. His newly found passion started at the young age of 44\, when he and his three brothers made it to the top of Mt. Whitney\, the highest peak in the continental United States. From there\, he sought more challenging climbs – everything from volcanoes in Mexico to Everest Base Camp and five of the famous “Seven Continental Summits\,” including Kilimanjaro\, Aconcagua\, Mt. Vinson in Antarctica\, Mt Elbrus in Southern Russia\, and Kosciuszko in Australia – climbing with some of the premiere climbers in the world. The journey and his experiences provided the opportunity to write two books on this great subject – the first\, Five Big Mountains\, and the second\, Another Five Big Mountains and Treks. We look forward to hosting you for an engaging series for mountain climbing enthusiasts or those simply curious about the process. \nAbout David Schaeffer \nDavid Schaeffer practiced law in Atlanta for thirty-eight years before moving to Kiawah Island with his wife Kim. He served as President of the Atlanta Bar Association and Chair of its Litigation Section and received the Atlanta Bar’s highest honor\, the Charles E. SUMMARY:SC250 Series // Two Types of Liberty
DESCRIPTION:The largely untold story of a rebellion in Virginia in 1775\, led by the Royalist governor Lord Dunamore\, holds just as much significance to the Revolution as the battles of Lexington and Concord. The first American corps of Black soldiers banded together under Dunamore’s command to fight together for the Crown against the Patriot soldiers who owned the lands they once worked on. “Lord Dunmore has commenced hostilities in Virginia\,” wrote Thomas Jefferson. “It has raised our countrymen into a perfect frenzy.” Discover the drama and subterfuge of Virginia’s roots in the Revolution from author and journalist for The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, National Geographic\, Andrew Lawler. Through his newest release\, The Perfect Frenzy (a fitting installment within our SC 250 series) discover more about a Scotsman and his collusion with formerly enslaved Black soldiers in a fight for a different kind of liberty. \nIf you are unable to attend the event\, but would like to purchase one or more signed copies\, Visit Buxton Books here! \nAbout the Book \nAs the American Revolution broke out in New England in the spring of 1775\, dramatic events unfolded in Virginia that proved every bit as decisive as the battles of Lexington and Concord and Bunker Hill in uniting the colonies against Britain. Virginia\, the largest\, wealthiest\, and most populous province in British North America\, was led by Lord Dunmore\, who counted George Washington as his close friend. But the Scottish earl lacked troops\, so when patriots imperiled the capital of Williamsburg\, he threatened to free and arm enslaved Africans—two of every five Virginians—to fight for the Crown. Virginia’s tobacco elite was reluctant to go to war with Britain but outraged at this threat to their human property. Dunmore fled the capital to build a stronghold in the colony’s largest city\, the port of Norfolk. As enslaved people flocked to his camp\, skirmishes broke out. “Lord Dunmore has commenced hostilities in Virginia\,” wrote Thomas Jefferson. “It has raised our countrymen into a perfect frenzy.” With a patriot army marching on Norfolk\, the royal governor freed those enslaved and sent them into battle against their former owners. In retribution\, and with Jefferson’s encouragement\, furious rebels burned Norfolk to the ground on January 1\, 1776\, blaming the crime on Dunmore. The port’s destruction and Dunmore’s emancipation prompted Virginia’s patriot leaders to urge the Continental Congress to split from Britain\, breaking the deadlock among the colonies and leading to adoption of the Declaration of Independence. Days later\, Dunmore and his Black allies withdrew from Virginia\, but the legacy of their fight would lead\, ultimately\, to Abraham Lincoln’s 1863 Emancipation Proclamation. Chronicling these stunning and widely overlooked events in full for the first time\, A Perfect Frenzy offers a striking new perspective on the American Revolution that reorients our understanding of its causes\, highlights the radically different motivations between patriots in the North and South\, and reveals the seeds of the nation’s racial divide. \nAbout the Author \nAndrew Lawler is a journalist and author who has written about history\, science\, religion\, and politics from dozens of countries. He is author of four books\, A Perfect Frenzy: A Royal Governor\, His Black Allies\, and the Crisis That Spurred the American Revolution\, the prize-winning Under Jerusalem: The Buried History of the World’s Most Contested City\, the national bestseller The Secret Token: Myth\, Obsession\, and the Search for the Lost Colony of Roanoke and the acclaimed Why Did The Chicken Cross The World: The Epic Saga Of The Bird That Powers Civilization. Andrew’s byline has appeared in The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, National Geographic\, Smithsonian\, and many other publications. He is a contributing writer for Science and contributing editor for Archaeology\, as well as a National Geographic Explorer and a Pulitzer Center grantee. His work has won a number of journalism awards\, and appeared several times in The Best of Science and Nature Writing. \nAbout SC 250 \nSC250 Charleston is intended to serve as an umbrella for Charleston-area community organizations\, governmental entities\, and business enterprises interested in conceiving\, building and sponsoring initiatives that commemorate the American Revolution and leading roles played by Charleston’s people and places. This program is sponsored (in part) by the South Carolina American Revolution Sestercentennial Commission. SC250 was established by the SC Legislature to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Revolutionary-Era and highlight the state’s significant role in securing America’s freedom by engaging and inspiring South Carolinians and visitors through heritage tourism\, rural economic impact initiatives\, and educational programs. Contents and opinions do not necessarily reflect the views or policies of SC250\, nor does the mention of trade names or commercial products constitute endorsement or recommendation by SC250.
