SUMMARY:Literary Torchbearers ~ Retrospective on Larry McMurtry & Pat Conroy
DESCRIPTION:Following its publication in 1925\, The Great Gatsby sold poorly and quickly fell out of print. F. Scott Fitzgerald felt the failure sharply. When he died in 1940 he believed that he and Gatsby were doomed to obscurity. Resurrection of The Great Gatsby\, and of Fitzgerald’s reputation\, came in the form of one Edmund Wilson\, who was Fitzgerald’s Princeton classmate and best friend.  It was Wilson\, himself an acclaimed editor\, who pushed hard in 1941 for the re-publication of The Great Gatsby – and the rest\, as they say\, is history.  Gatsby now sells in the millions\, and is considered among the finest of all American Novels. \nAdvocates like Wilson could be called Literary Torchbearers\, loyalists who keep the flame burning for authors who have passed on. Another of these would certainly be Wayne and Dartie Flynt\, who befriended To Kill a Mockingbird author Harper Lee in her final years\, and recently published Afternoons with Harper Lee\, a reminiscence of Lee and their time with her. \nWe don’t have to look far to find Literary Torchbearers in our midst. One of them is George Getschow\, former Dallas bureau chief for the Wall Street Journal\, frequent judge for the Pulitzer Prise\, and most importantly\, a good friend and supporter of Lonesome Dove and The Last Picture Show author Larry McMurtry. Getschow started a workshop for aspiring writers in Archer City\, Texas – McMurtry’s home town – in 2005. When McMurtry died in 2021\, Getschow gathered many of McMurtry’s friends\, family\, and colleagues for a dramatic memorial service beneath the Texas Stars.  From the energy of this\, Getschow solicited essays about McMurtry: Pastures of the Empty Page was published a few months ago.  As fate would have it\, that’s how George Getschow became Larry McMurtry’s Literary Torchbearer. \nAnother pair of Literary Torchbearers are John Warley and Jonathan Haupt. Warley was Pat Conroy’s Citadel classmate\, baseball teammate\, and lifelong friend.  As such\, Warley was a witness to may of the family dramas that drove Conroy’s work. After Pat’s death\, Warley actively supported the Pat Conroy Literary Center\, and has appeared on numerous panels discussing Conroy’s work.  Jonathan Haupt is the Executive Director of the Pat Conroy Library\, Founding Director of the Pat Conroy Literary Festival\, and editor of the collection of Pat Conroy essays that was published in 2015\, Our Prince of Scribes.  Together they continue to keep Conroy’s legacy thriving. \nCollectively Haupt\, Warly and Getschow will provide a thrilling evening’s discussion on the work of Literary Torchbearers.  They will be joined on stage by James Scott\, who will perform as moderator. Scott is also an author\, Pulitzer nominee and Archer City attendee. Erik Calonius will be providing an introduction to the evening’s talk. Calonius is a former foreign correspondent for the Wall Street Journal and a writing coach at the Archer City Workshop. \nTickets*: PURCHASE HERE \n$10 – Members or $15 – General Admission \nAbout George Getschow                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      George Getschow is a Pulitzer Prize finalist for National Reporting and winner of the Robert F. Kennedy Award for distinguished writing about the underprivileged. He has earned numerous other awards for his writing and was inducted into the Texas Institute of Letters in 2012 for “distinctive literary achievement.” Today\, as director of the Archer City Writers Workshop\, he helps organize and conduct annual writing workshops in Archer City for professional writers and college and high school students from across the country. \nAbout John Warley                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          John Warley is an award-winning author\, a dedicated dad\, and a retired lawyer\, having practiced both criminal law as a prosecutor and civil law as a litigator for over forty years. A South Carolinian by birth\, he grew up largely in Yorktown\, Virginia.  He is the award-winning author of five published novels and one non-fiction history of his undergraduate alma mater (Stand Forever\, Yielding Never; The Citadel in the 21st Century). Jury of One is his sixth novel. \nAbout Jonathan Haupt                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        Jonathan Haupt is the executive director of the Pat Conroy Literary Center and the founding director of the Pat Conroy Literary Festival. As the former director of the University of South Carolina Press\, Haupt created\, with the late Pat Conroy\, the Story River Books original fiction imprint\, named by Garden & Gun magazine as “one of the top ten things to love about the South.” He serves on the boards of the South Carolina Academy of Authors and the Friends of South Carolina Libraries. He has moderated panels and presented on topics of small press and university press publishing\, literary arts partnerships\, and the writing life of Pat Conroy at writers conferences\, library conferences\, book festivals\, libraries\, and schools. With novelist Nicole Seitz\, Haupt is coeditor of the anthology Our Prince of Scribes: Writers Remember Pat Conroy. \nAbout James Scott                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                A former Nieman Fellow at Harvard\, James M. Scott is the author of Rampage\, which was named one of the Best Books of 2018 by the editors at Amazon\, Kirkus\, and Military Times and was chosen as a finalist for the prestigious Gilder Lehrman Prize for Military History by the New York Historical Society. His other works include Target Tokyo\, a 2016 Pulitzer Prize finalist\, The War Below\, and The Attack on the Liberty\, which won the Rear Admiral Samuel Eliot Morison Award. SUMMARY:Chamber Music // A Spring Tradition
DESCRIPTION:Join the Charleston Symphony for an elevated musical experience in an intimate setting. Enjoy carefully curated Chamber Music from your beloved Charleston Symphony musicians up close and personal as they perform distinguished works by Beethoven\, Prokofiev\, and Strauss. \nBeethoven is known for being the catalyst between the classical and romantic era. His innovative chord progressions as well as repeated themes throughout multiple movements are what make his writing so unique. Composed in 1801\, Beethoven’s Serenade for Flute\, Violin\, and Viola was written specifically with these instruments in mind\, instead of interchangeably. This was unusual for a composer like Beethoven who is not known for writing various works for flute. This one-of-a-kind piece will be performed by our esteemed CSO musicians in addition to works by Prokofiev and Strauss. \nTickets are $50.\nTo purchase tickets\, click here or call the CSO at 843-723-7528.

SUMMARY:Book Tour Exclusive // Jeanette Walls: Hang the Moon
DESCRIPTION:Along with Buxton Books\, the Library Society is thrilled to be welcoming Jeanette Walls to King Street as part of the national tour for Hang the Moon\, her latest novel that debuted Spring 2023\, and transported readers to 1920’s rural Virginia. Having been described by NPR as ‘brilliant and effervescent’\, she hits on the difficulties of enforcing Prohibition and how its effects decreased the quality of life for many middle and lower class people whose livelihoods relied on the making or selling of liquor. \n“Walls has written a stunning and compelling tale — not surprising considering the acclaim she received for her memoir The Glass Castle. The novel Hang the Moon gives us a chance to think about something that hasn’t gotten much attention — the lives of women bootleggers in America.” – NPR\, 2023 \nTickets*: PURCHASE HERE \n$ 28 – Members or $ 32 – General Admission // 1 Ticket and 1 signed copy of Hang the Moon \n$ 38 – Limited Option (Members Only) // 2 Tickets and 1 signed copy of Hang the Moon* \n*There will be a limited number of first come two-for-one tickets available for CLS Members\, these tickets include two attendees and one signed copy of Hang the Moon.  \nNOTE: If you are unable to attend the program\, and wish to secure a signed copy (or copies!)\, please pre-order through the following link: Hang the Moon or call Buxton Books at (843) 723-1670. \nThis is a collaborative event with Buxton Books\, guest information such as email and name will be shared between both parties for promotional purposes only. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nJeannette Walls is an internationally known author and journalist most known for The Glass Castle\, which remained on the New York Times Bestseller’s List for 100 weeks and also received The Christopher Award\, the American Library Association’s Alex Award and the Books for Better Living Award. She is also the author of the instant New York Times bestsellers The Silver Star and Half Broke Horses\, named one of the ten best books of 2009 by the editors of The New York Times Book Review. Walls lives in rural Virginia with her husband\, the writer John Taylor. \nWalls has three siblings\, her sisters Lori and Maureen\, and a brother named Brian. Lori\, Jeannette and Brian went through thick and thin together and they had a very tight bond when growing up. They lived in extreme poverty for some time of their childhood. After seeing the poor conditions they grew up with\, Lori and Jeannette decided to move to New York City. Lori was the first to move as she was the oldest\, followed by Jeannette\, then Brian\, then her whole family which included her parents\, Rex and Rose Mary Walls\, and Maureen\, her little sister. Jeannette Walls was born in Phoenix\, Arizona and graduated with honors from Barnard College\, the women’s college affiliated with Columbia University. \nABOUT THE BOOK \nSallie Kincaid is the daughter of the biggest man in a small town\, the charismatic Duke Kincaid. Born at the turn of the 20th century into a life of comfort and privilege\, Sallie remembers little about her mother who died in a violent argument with the Duke. By the time she is just eight years old\, the Duke has remarried and had a son\, Eddie. While Sallie is her father’s daughter\, sharp-witted and resourceful\, Eddie is his mother’s son\, timid and cerebral. When Sallie tries to teach young Eddie to be more like their father\, her daredevil coaching leads to an accident\, and Sallie is cast out. \nNine years later\, she returns\, determined to reclaim her place in the family. That’s a lot more complicated than Sallie expected\, and she enters a world of conflict and lawlessness. Sallie confronts the secrets and scandals that hide in the shadows of the Big House\, navigates the factions in the family and town\, and finally comes into her own as a bold\, sometimes reckless bootlegger. \n“You’ll fall in love with Sallie on the very first page and keep rooting for her all the way through to the last” (Good Housekeeping) in this thrilling read that “goes down easy…like the forbidden whisky that defines the life of Sallie Kincaid” (Associated Press).

SUMMARY:CLS Wine Club: Alsace Whites
DESCRIPTION:Sprouting from a lively conversation down in our Fellows Lounge last year\, CLS Wine Club originated with the hopes of bringing our members’ love for literacy and wine together. Our gracious hosts—each hailing from storied outings and clubs centered around the complexities of wine—have agreed to share wit and wisdom twice a year. Special thanks to Jerry Mitchell\, who we have named the “Wine Intellect\,” and Tim Cantopher\, who shares knowledge as “Taste Master.” \nIn addition\, we have partnered with the renowned expert Justin Coleman of Monarch Wines and for this special evening of tasting and access to unique vineyards and small-production varietals. This season’s theme is Alsace Whites featuring varietals such as Rieslings (on the dryer side)\, Gewürztraminers\, Pinot Blancs\, and Gruner Veltliners. \nSeating is limited in order to host a conversation-style wine tasting where the experts will walk us through four specifically chosen bottles and dissect the nuance associated with each. Part of participating in the wine club is the opportunity to purchase wines that would otherwise not be available at retail. Because these wines are available in such limited quantities to start with\, we must secure them ahead of time\, therefore your ticket will include one of each bottles to take home (Avg $35/bottle)\, as part of the overall ticket price. Each ticket includes your attendance to the event in addition to the four bottles. \nAbout Monarch and Justin Coleman \nYears of selecting wines for some of NYC’s favorite spots (Balthazar\, Commerce\, Morandi\, The Mark) have helped Justin (owner and propietor of Monarch Wines) cultivate strong relationships with both European and American winemakers\, importers\, and distributors. From lugging bottles to creating beverage programs\, to managing operations\, Justin has worked with some of the most exalted names in the business. Seeking a slower pace of life for his young family at the time (wife\, Sarah\, and eldest daughter\, Fia)\, Justin headed south to Charleston in 2013\, landing at The Ordinary as General Manager. At The Ordinary\, Justin fostered an appreciation for\, and understanding of\, the community in Charleston. Monarch Wine Merchants opened in 2017\, filling a void in the market at the time for a true neighborhood wine shop\, focused on wine and only wine. Delivering the highest level of customer service has become a hallmark of the shop. Justin is forever passionate about keeping the shelves well-stocked at the brick and mortar\, while also sourcing highly allocated wines for both local clients and those further afield. \nThere are two ticket options available: \n*Single $285 // $145 ticket price + $140 wine price (4 bottles to take home) \n*Couple $430 // $290 ticket price + $140 wine price (4 bottles to take home) \nCurrent Fellows may purchase tickets here.

Winslow cites that this book truly is the last of his extraordinary career\, therefore an even more special opportunity to be in the audience. \nTickets*: PURCHASE HERE \n$45 – Members or $50 – General Admission // 1 Ticket and 1 signed copy of City in Ruins \n$55 – Limited Option // 2 Tickets and 1 signed copy of City in Ruins* \n*There will be a limited number of two for one tickets available\, these tickets include two attendees and one signed copy of City in Ruins. \nNOTE: If you are unable to attend the program\, and wish to secure a signed copy (or copies!)\, pre-order HERE or call Buxton Books at (843) 723-1670. \nThis is a collaborative event with Buxton Books\, guest information such as email and name will be shared between both parties for promotional purposes only. \nAbout the book: \nFollowing City on Fire and City of Dreams\, City in Ruins is the explosive\, impossible to put down conclusion to New York Times bestselling author Don Winslow’s epic\, genre-defining crime trilogy and the final book of Winslow’s extraordinary career. Sometimes you have to become what you hate to protect what you love. Danny Ryan is rich. Beyond his wildest dreams rich. The former dock worker\, Irish mob soldier and fugitive from the law is now a respected businessman – a Las Vegas casino mogul and billionaire silent partner in a group that owns two lavish hotels. Finally\, Danny has it all: a beautiful house\, a child he adores\, a woman he might even fall in love with. Life is good. But then Danny reaches too far. When he tries to buy an old hotel on a prime piece of real estate with plans to build his dream resort\, he triggers a war against Las Vegas power brokers\, a powerful FBI agent bent on revenge and a rival casino owner with dark connections of his own. Danny thought he had buried his past\, but now it reaches up to him from the grave to pull him down. Old enemies surface\, and when they come for Danny they vow to take everything – not only his empire\, not just his life\, but all that he holds dear\, including his son. To save his life and everything he loves\, Danny must become the ruthless fighter he once was – and never wanted to be again. Ranging from the gritty back rooms of Providence\, RI to the power corridors of Washington\, DC and Wall Street to the golden casinos of Las Vegas\, City in Ruins is an epic crime novel of love and hate\, ambition and desperation\, vengeance and compassion. \nAbout the author: \nDon Winslow is the author of twenty-five acclaimed\, award-winning international bestsellers\, including seven New York Times bestsellers (Savages\, The Kings of Cool\, The Cartel\, The Force\, The Border\, City on Fire and City of Dreams). Savages was made into a feature film by three-time Oscar-winning writer-director Oliver Stone from a screenplay by Shane Salerno\, Winslow and Stone. Winslow’s epic Cartel trilogy has been adapted for TV and will appear as a weekly series on FX. Additional Winslow books are currently in development at Paramount (The Winter of Frankie Machine)\, Netflix (Boone Daniels)\, Warner Brothers (Satori)\, Sony (City on Fire\, City of Dreams\, City in Ruins) and Working Title (“Crime 101”). He has recently written a series of acclaimed and award-winning short stories for Audible narrated by four-time Oscar nominee Ed Harris. A former investigator\, anti-terrorist trainer and trial consultant\, Winslow has announced that City in Ruins will be his final novel.

SUMMARY:Book Tour Exclusive // J. Drew Lanham\, "Joy is the Justice We Give Ourselves"
DESCRIPTION:Join the Library Society and Buxton Books in welcoming back J. Drew Lanham\, South Carolinian\, American author\, poet\, and wildlife biologist\, to the Main Reading Room for a book tour exclusive event celebrating Joy is in the Justice We Give Ourselves. Recognized in February 2022 by the Post and Courier newspaper as one of twelve Black Leaders in South Carolina\, Lanham is a strong advocate for the African-American role in natural resources conservation\, intrigued with how culture and ethnic prisms can bend perceptions of nature and its care. He believes that conservation must be a blending of head and heart\, rigorous science\, and evocative art. His newest work\, Joy is the Justice We Give Ourselves\, is written in his signature mix of poetry and prose\, mines the deep connection to ancestors through the living world\, and tunes his unique voice toward embracing the radical act of joy. \n“…Black joy shines through in this eco-aware\, Black-centered book that offers a refreshing point of view and demands that Black bodies receive the same beautified Earth on which we were all born.” —The New York Amsterdam News \nTickets*: PURCHASE HERE \n$30 – Members or $35 – General Admission // 1 Ticket and 1 signed copy of Joy is the Justice We Give Ourselves \n$40 – Limited Option // 2 Tickets and 1 signed copy of Joy is the Justice We Give Ourselves* \n*There will be a limited number of two for one tickets available\, these tickets include two attendees and one signed copy of Joy is the Justice We Give Ourselves* \nNOTE: If you are unable to attend the program\, and wish to secure a signed copy (or copies!)\, pre-order HERE or call Buxton Books at (843) 723-1670. \nThis is a collaborative event with Buxton Books\, guest information such as email and name will be shared between both parties for promotional purposes only. \nAbout the book: \nFrom J. Drew Lanham\, MacArthur “Genius” Grant Recipient and author of Sparrow Envy: A Field Guide to Birds and Lesser Beasts\, comes a sensuous new collection in his signature mix of poetry and prose. In gorgeous and timely pieces\, Joy Is the Justice We Give Ourselves is a lush journey into wildness and Black being. Lanham notices nature through seasonal shifts\, societal unrest\, and deeply personal reflection and traces a path from bitter history to the present predicament. Drawing canny connections between the precarity of nature and the long arm of racism\, the collection offers reconciliation and eco-reparation as hopeful destinations from our current climate of division. \nAbout the author: \nJ. Drew Lanham is the author of Sparrow Envy: Field Guide to Birds and Lesser Beasts and The Home Place: Memoirs of a Colored Man’s Love Affair with Nature. He has received a MacArthur “Genius” Grant as well as the Dan W. Lufkin Conservation Award (National Audubon Society)\, the Rosa Parks and Grace Lee Boggs Outstanding Service Award (North American Association for Environmental Education)\, and the E. O. Wilson Award for Outstanding Science in Biodiversity Conservation (Center for Biological Diversity). He served as the Poet Laureate of Edgefield\, South Carolina in 2022. SUMMARY:Writers on Writing: Zibby Owens In Conversation with Victoria Benton Frank and Stacy Willingham
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of Zibby Owens’ new novel\, Blank\, the Library Society is pleased to welcome Zibby Owens in discussion with Victoria Benton Frank\, author of My Magnolia Summer\, and Stacy Willingham\, author of Only if You’re Lucky for an in-depth discussion on “Writers on Writing” and each author’s unique perspective and approach to their works. \nBlank\, by Zibby Owens\, shares the story of a wife\, mother\, and frustrated writer who faces an impossible deadline for turning her life around in a hilarious debut novel about family\, friendship\, success\, and exhilarating self-(re)discovery. Pippa Jones is a forty-ish former literary sensation who fears she will be a one-hit-wonder. After the follow-up book she was almost done writing\, Podlusters\, had to be tossed (it ended up sharing a plot and title with superstar author Ella Rankin’s summer blockbuster!)\, she couldn’t write a thing. When she finds out that she has only five days left to finish (or rather\, start) or repay an advance she’s already spent\, Pippa has a brilliantly original idea\, and when Pippa’s publisher gets intimately involved\, it unlocks a series of plot twists she never saw coming. Pippa races against time—in her used Volvo—and discovers more about her career\, marriage\, family\, friends\, and herself than she ever could have dreamed up. \nIn My Magnolia Summer\, a gripping tale of self-discovery\, Victoria Benton Frank introduces us to Maggie\, a South Carolina transplant in New York City struggling to find her place in the world. When she receives a phone call from her troubled sister\, Violet\, Maggie must return to her hometown of Sullivan’s Island\, where she uncovers shocking secrets about her family’s past. With three generations of South Carolina women reunited—the steadfast Gran\, the troubled Lily\, the impulsive Violet\, and the determined Maggie\, anything becomes possible. Immerse yourself in the stunning depictions of marsh grasses and dunes\, as this novel transports you to a world brimming with cherished family traditions and unforeseen twists of fate. \nStacy Willingham brings us Only if You’re Lucky\, a tantalizing thriller about the nature of friendship and belonging\, about loyalty\, envy\, and betrayal—another gripping novel from an author quickly becoming the gold standard in psychological suspense. Lucy Sharpe is larger than life. Magnetic\, addictive. Bold and dangerous. Especially for Margot\, who meets Lucy at the end of their freshman year at a liberal arts college in South Carolina. Margot is the shy one\, the careful one\, and never the center of attention. But when Lucy singles her out at the end of the year\, a year Margot spent studying and playing it safe\, and asks her to room together\, something in Margot can’t say no. And so Margot finds herself living in an off-campus house with three other girls\, the three of them opposites but also deeply intertwined. Margot and Lucy have become the closest of friends\, but by the middle of their sophomore year\, one of the fraternity boys from the house next door has been brutally murdered… and Lucy Sharpe is missing without a trace. \nTickets*: PURCHASE HERE \n$10 – Members // $15 – General Admission \nIf you aren’t able to attend but would like to secure a (signed!) copy of Zibby’s new novel Blank\, click HERE\,                                                                                                                                                                 or call Buxton Books at (843) 723-1670 \nABOUT ZIBBY OWENS \nZibby Owens — like Pippa — wears a lot of hats. She is the award-winning podcast host of Moms Don’t Have Time to Read Books; founder and CEO of Zibby Media which includes the publishing house Zibby Books\, online content site Zibby Mag\, Zibby’s Book Club\, retreats\, classes\, events\, and podcasts; and owner of Zibby’s Bookshop\, an independent bookstore in Santa Monica. Her previous books include Bookends: A Memoir of Love\, Loss\, and Literature\, Princess Charming\, and two anthologies that she edited. Most of all\, she is the mother of four pretty fabulous kids ages 8 to 16 — and wife to Kyle. \nABOUT VICTORIA BENTON FRANK \nVictoria Benton Frank was born in New York City\, and raised in Montclair\, New Jersey\, but considers herself to have dual residency in the Lowcountry. She is a graduate of the College of Charleston and the French Culinary Institute. Victoria worked in restaurants in New York before returning to Charleston\, South Carolina\, which she considers home\, with her husband\, two kids\, and a giant mutt. When she isn’t writing\, she is reading\, cooking\, or chasing her children. \nABOUT STACY WILLINGHAM \nStacy Willingham is a New York Times\, USA Today and internationally bestselling author of A Ficker in the Dark\, All the Dangerous Things\, and Only if You’re Lucky. SUMMARY:Book Launch Exclusive // Roger Jones ~ "The Final Victory"
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the pub week debut of The Final Victory by Roger Jones: a novel that fuses the riveting action of The Boys in the Boat with the emotional heft of The Fault in Our Stars\, twenty cancer patients compete in a grueling race only to discover that real victory is achieved within. Jones\, a Dragon Boat enthusiast himself\, will shed light on the novel that was inspired by true events and whose story continues to inspire paddlers and non-paddlers alike to dig deep\, give back\, and have fun. \n“What is courage? In this notable debut\, Roger Jones explores the strength\, resilience\, compassion\, and willpower of a band of athletes who define courage and triumph over unspeakable odds. These twenty men and women overcome cancer to not merely win a national championship but to survive. I laughed. I cried. I was inspired. The Final Victory is an uplifting novel we all need to read.”\n– Mary Alice Monroe\, New York Times bestselling author \nTickets: Purchase HERE \n$10 – Members or $15 – General Admission \nAbout The Final Victory \nA proud man humbled by his recent diagnosis of neuroendocrine cancer and his past mistakes\, Tripp Avery reluctantly agrees to coach a paddling team in a bid to win the Mixed Masters Dragon Boat US national championship. In his boat: twelve men and eight women who all have cancer diagnoses as debilitating as his. Eager to defy his prognosis and prove his worth\, Tripp pushes himself and his team to physical and emotional extremes. \nAs the races begin in the Tennessee summer heat\, four teammates’ extreme physical challenges stand out: \nSean Riley\, suffering from advanced colon cancer. \nPat Selensky\, whose life-threatening treatments for ovarian cancer test her passion to live. \nThomas Huger\, ex-All-American college football player\, coping with jaw cancer and a humbling dependence on a feeding tube. \nBrooke Wyche\, whose chemotherapy treatments for breast cancer have weakened her body. \nAfter losing a critical race\, Tripp doubles down\, but his overbearing coaching brings Brooke to the point of collapse and sends Thomas to the hospital. Facing this crisis\, Tripp must confront his own demons in order to help his teammates forge a comeback. But with Thomas in critical condition and the other paddlers flagging\, the team’s chances to win the national championship are slim. \nA debut novel that is equal parts thrilling and inspiring\, THE FINAL VICTORY is the heart-wrenching story of twenty brave men and women confronting adversity\, facing death\, and striving together for the ultimate triumph. \nAbout Roger Jones \nRoger Jones\, businessman\, philanthropist\, humanitarian and avid athlete has founded numerous business and community organizations. He has served on the board of directors of The South Carolina Chamber of Commerce; Healing NET\, a national non-profit that educates physicians and patients regarding Neuroendocrine Cancer; and The South Carolina Writers Association among many others.  In 2009 Roger and his wife\, Teresa Jones\, an award-winning artist\, founded The Companion Foundation to create affordable housing and educational programs for the underserved community. Roger was inducted into his high school athletic Hall of Fame and celebrated his sixtieth birthday by paddling an outrigger canoe in an international competition\, The Liberty Challenge\, a fifteen-mile race in the New York City Hudson River.  During a 2012 trip to East Germany to receive an intensive radiation treatment for Neuroendocrine Cancer\, Roger decided to pursue his lifelong dream of becoming a writer. After returning home he attended many writing classes and conferences. \nTHE FINAL VICTORY is his first novel. He has had articles and short stories published in several local publications as well as The Writers Digest.  Married for forty-nine years\, Roger is the proud father of three children and grandfather of three grandchildren. The documentary is the result of film adaptations of Brown’s three short stories: Boy and Dog\, Wild Thing\, and Samaritans. Hawkins captured sincere and revealing comments from both Larry and his wife Mary Annie Brown\, who offered genuine insights into what it was like to be Larry Brown the fiction writer. The Rough South of Larry Brown premiered at the 2002 Full Frame Documentary Film Festival in Durham\, North Carolina\, and subsequently entered it into a number of regional film festivals. The documentary won several awards\, including an Off-Hollywood Oscar for Best Feature Film at the 2002 Ohio Independent Film Festival\, Best Feature at the 2002 Savannah Film and Video Festival\, and Best Documentary at the 2003 Oxford\, Mississippi Film Festival. Brown died in November 2004 and was buried at Tula\, Mississippi. \nAbout the Filmmaker \nGary Hawkins was born and raised on a farm in Trinity\, North Carolina. His first film – produced when he was 17 – featured his grandmother making her “world famous” fried apple pies. The film was called DRIED\, FRIED\, AND LAID TO THE SIDE. He followed up DRIED\, FRIED with THREADBARE\, a quiet meditation on the sunlight dapples that animated his grandmother’s quilts. His third film captured a violent thunderstorm at night. \nHawkins continued to make films on a wide range of subjects throughout his 20s. His breakthrough doc\, THE ROUGH SOUTH OF HARRY CREWS debuted on UNC-TV in 1989\, and went on to win several awards\, including an Emmy Award. The CREWS bio is currently being restored for inclusion in the Criterion Collection.  His next ROUGH SOUTH entry was THE ROUGH SOUTH OF LARRY BROWN. Cited by the Oxford American as “an essential Southern documentary\,” the BROWN doc won several awards at top tier festivals and enjoyed a lengthy run on French television. \nHawkins experimental short\, ZERO IRONY (assembled from decades-old footage of his grandmother’s farm) premiered at the Rotterdam International Film Festival in 2015\, and was subsequently invited to the Edinburgh and 46th Poetry International film festivals. ZERO IRONY can be seen on the Labocine website\, a hybrid streaming platform designed to showcase science in cinema. \nHawkins jazz doc\, IN MY MIND\, premiered at the Kennedy Center in 2010\, then made a run through the festival circuit that culminated in a screening and discussion at the\nNational Gallery of Art in 2015. IN MY MIND is a collaboration with jazz pianist\, Jason Moran that deconstructs his tribute to Thelonious Monk’s infamous 1959 Town Hall concert. Championed by art historian\, Christian Delage\, IN MY MIND enjoyed a 2022 run through France that concluded with a special screening at La Filmothèque du Quartier Latin in Paris. \nHawkins is a screenwriter and a 2000 Sundance Fellow (for an unproduced screenplay called DOWNTIME). He also wrote the screenplay for JOE\, starring Nicolas Cage and Tye Sheridan. JOE received accolades at the Vienna\, Deauville\, Munich\, and Edinburgh festivals\, and recently enjoyed a resurgence on HBO. Hawkins is currently at work on a coming-of-age series for Rough House Pictures called ZONA ROSA. Based in part on true events\, ZONA ROSA is a rowdy\, coming-of-age drama set in a Texas border town\, circa 1989. \nHawkins is one of the original founders of the UNC School of Filmmaking. His most successful directing students are David Gordon Green (GEORGE WASHINGTON\, PINEAPPLE EXPRESS)\, Jeff Nichols (MUD\, THE BIKERIDERS)\, and Craig Zobel (COMPLIANCE\, MARE OF EASTTOWN). In 2010 Hawkins was picked by Variety Magazine as one of the top ten filmmaking instructors in America. \nCurrently\, Hawkins teaches screenwriting and nonfiction filmmaking at Duke University\, where he is ranked in the top 5% of all humanities instructors.

But Stella is hardly cut out for adventure; a childhood trauma has kept her confined to the strict routines of her comfort zone. When her boss encourages her to take time off\, Stella resigns herself to honoring her mother’s last wishes.\nAlone in a foreign city\, Stella falls into old habits\, living cautiously and frugally. Then she stumbles across a vintage store where she tries on a fabulous Dior dress. The shopkeeper insists that this dress was meant for Stella and\, for the first time in her life\, Stella does something impulsive. She buys the dress and together they embark on an adventure. Her first stop: iconic brasserie Les Deux Magots\, where Stella tastes her first oysters\, and then meets an octogenarian art collector who decides to take her under his wing. As Jules introduces her to a veritable who’s who of the 1980s Paris literary\, art\, and culinary worlds\, Stella begins to understand what it might mean to live a larger life.  As weeks—and many decadent meals—go by\, Stella ends up living as a “tumbleweed” at famed bookstore Shakespeare & Company\, uncovers a hundred-year-old mystery in a Manet painting\, and discovers a passion for food that may be connected to her past. A feast for the senses\, this novel is a testament to living deliciously\, taking chances\, and finding your true home. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nRuth Reichl: The New York Times bestselling author of five memoirs\, the novel Delicious!\, and the cookbook My Kitchen Year. SUMMARY:Music Series // Brazilian Bossa at the Library with Porto Seguro
DESCRIPTION:Join the Library Society to welcome back Porto Seguro\, a six-person band playing Brazilian samba\, bossa nova\, and choro genres: mellow music with a soulful vibe\, like a great cup of coffee – and the band’s blend is Brazilian with upbeat American energy. \nJazz vocalist\, Alva Anderson\, has been Port Seguro’s headlining performer since 2020. Her soulful interpretations and captivating interpretations bring even more energy to the show than when the band last appeared at the Library Society in 2019. Other members include: Susan Conant on flutes\, John Holenko on mandolin\, Tom Noren on guitar\, John Kennedy on bass\, and Josh Hoover on drums. \nTickets*: PURCHASE HERE \n$25 – Members or $35 – General Admission \nAbout the Band: \nPorto Seguro and vocalist\, Alva Anderson\, love sharing their enthusiasm for Brazilian music with audiences. The core members (Susan Conant\, flutes; John Holenko\, mandolins; Tom Noren\, guitar; and John Kennedy\, bass) started jamming together in 2014 on choro\, a lighthearted mix of Afro and European influences from early 20th century Brazil. In 2019 they were thrilled to have Alva Anderson sit in on a few sets. She immediately became the band’s headliner adding her expert jazz vocals and soulful spirit to the group. Along with Alva\, the group added drums bringing together a sound that leans heavily into Brazilian samba and bossa classics. The result was magic! Their lively shows now include well-known favorites (think Tom Jobim\, One Note Samba\, Girl from Ipanema) combined with lesser-known but equally wonderful gems of bossa nova (Brazil’s distinctive contribution to jazz) and samba (the raucous music of Carnival). The group has appeared for two full seasons at Charleston’s Forte Jazz Lounge\, and numerous local festivals and concert series including Concerts at the Library (Charleston Library Society)\, Piccolo Spoleto\, North Charleston Arts Festival\, Music on Sunday (Greenville\, SC)\, Music on Malphrus (Bluffton\, SC) and the Gage Hall Coffeehouse.

SUMMARY:~ In Conversation with Dr. Fields-Black on "COMBEE" and Harriet Tubman's Daring Raid
DESCRIPTION:The Charleston Library Society and Buxton Books\, along with community partners Lowcountry Land Trust and the SC Historical Society\, are honored to host renowned author and historian Dr. Edda Fields-Black in conversation to discuss her most recent publication\, COMBEE: Harriet Tubman\, the Combahee River Raid\, and Black Freedom during the Civil War. In her book\, Dr. Fields-Black dives into the story of the Combahee River Raid\, one of Harriet Tubman’s most extraordinary accomplishments\, based on original documents written by a descendant of one of the participants. Helping to shape the conversation will be Chief Conservation Officer of the Lowcountry Land Trust\, David Ray. \nSee below for Event Partners.  \nTickets*: Purchase HERE \n$10 – Members \n$15 – General Admission \n$50 – Members (Ticket includes 1 signed copy of COMBEE: Harriet Tubman\, the Combahee River Raid\, and Black Freedom during the Civil War) \n$55 – General Admission (Ticket includes 1 signed copy of COMBEE) \n$60 – Limited Option (Includes 2 Tickets and 1 signed copy of COMBEE) \nAbout the Book: \nMany biographies\, children’s books\, and films about Harriet Tubman omit a crucial chapter: during the Civil War\, hired by the Union Army\, she ventured into the heart of slave territory–Beaufort\, South Carolina–to live\, work\, and gather intelligence for a daring raid up the Combahee River to attack the major plantations of Rice Country\, the breadbasket of the Confederacy. \nIn COMBEE\, Edda L. Fields-Black–herself a descendant of one of the participants in the raid–shows how Tubman commanded a ring of spies\, scouts\, and pilots and participated in military expeditions behind Confederate lines. On June 2\, 1863\, Tubman and her crew led two regiments of Black US Army soldiers – the Second South Carolina Volunteers – alone with their white commanders up coastal South Carolina’s Combahee River in three gunboats. In a matter of hours\, they torched eight rice plantations and liberated 730 people\, people whose Lowcountry Creole language and culture Tubman could barely understand. The Second South Carolina Volunteers included a core group of black men who had liberated themselves from bondage on South Carolina’s Sea Island cotton plantations after the Battle of Port Royal in November 1861. In recounting this history\, Fields-Black also brings to life intergenerational\, extended enslaved families\, neighbors\, praise-house members\, and sweethearts forced to work in South Carolina’s deadly tidal rice swamps\, sold\, and separated during the antebellum period. These formerly enslaved peoples of the Sea Island indigo and cotton plantations come together with the semi-urban port cities of Charleston\, Beaufort\, and Savannah\, and the rice plantations of the coastal plains\, creating the distinctly American Gullah Geechee dialect\, culture\, and identity–perhaps the most significant legacy of Harriet Tubman’s Combahee River Raid. \nAbout Dr. Edda Fields-Black: \nEdda Fields-Black teaches history at Carnegie Mellon University and has written extensively about the history of West African rice farmers\, including in such works as Deep Roots: Rice Farmers in West Africa and the African Diaspora. She was a co-editor of Rice: Global Networks and New Histories\, which was selected as a Choice Outstanding Academic Title. Fields-Black has served as a consultant for the Smithsonian National Museum of African-American History and Culture’s permanent exhibit\, “Rice Fields of the Lowcountry.” She is the executive producer and librettist of “Unburied\, Unmourned\, Unmarked: Requiem for Rice\,” a widely performed original contemporary classical work by celebrated composer John Wineglass. \nFields-Black is a descendant of Africans enslaved on rice plantations in Colleton County\, South Carolina; her great-great-great grandfather fought in the Combahee River Raid in June 1863. Her determination to illuminate the riches of the Gullah dialect\, and to reclaim Gullah Geechee history and culture\, has taken her to the rice fields of South Carolina and Georgia to those of Sierra Leone and Republic of Guinea in West Africa. \nAbout David Ray: \nDavid Ray is Lowcountry Land Trust’s Chief Conservation Officer. His team protects land and water in South Carolina’s coastal plain using traditional and innovative tools and funding. They steward a wide variety of conservation interests and works with communities to preserve places of natural resource\, recreational\, and cultural significance. Previously an attorney in government\, large firms\, and academic settings. He became Lands Program Director for the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy in 2002. Subsequently\, he managed conservation planning and grant-making programs at the Open Space Institute and has led conservation programs for The Nature Conservancy in the Southern Blue Ridge and Colorado. David holds degrees from Davidson College and the University of Georgia School of Law. During his career\, he has played a significant role in over sixty conservation projects on more than 48\,500 acres. \n  \nEvent Partners \nLowcountry Land Trust: \nFounded in 1986\, Lowcountry Land Trust has worked for 37 years protecting land that makes coastal South Carolina extraordinary and sustains the culture that thrives within it. Operating in seventeen coastal counties\, Lowcountry Land Trust has grown from a small community effort that rallied to protect an island on the Stono River to an institution that protects more than 150\,000 acres. Protecting and maintaining our natural resources by avoiding overdevelopment is crucial to the continued enjoyment of the Lowcountry for generations to come. In addition to Lowcountry Land Trust’s conservation easements held and privately owned lands\, LLT owns and protects publicly-accessible properties that are in direct harmony with the culture and values of the Lowcountry. These ambassador sites emphasize the importance of regional lands and showcase examples of conservation to the community. \nSouth Carolina Historical Society: \nWith 350 years of state history comprised of rare books\, manuscripts\, and visual materials\, the South Carolina Historical Society is the state’s largest and oldest private archive as well as a modern historical museum. Founded in 1855\, the organization’s preservation\, exploration\, and interpretation of the state’s historical legacy continues to benefit generations of learners. Its mission is “to expand\, preserve and make accessible our collection; to improve knowledge of and encourage focus\, interest and pride in the history of our state.” \nCoastal Community Foundation of South Carolina: \nCoastal Community Foundation works to create communities rich in equity\, opportunity\, and well-being by uniting people and investing resources so that all community members have a pathway to achieve their goals. Through endowment funds established by individuals\, families\, businesses and organizations\, our combined resources allow us to not only address community needs today\, but help us chart a course for a brighter future in the nine counties we serve along South Carolina’s coast. With our donors\, we invest millions of dollars through grantmaking\, impact investing and scholarships each year. We are also known for understanding and acting upon the dynamic needs of the communities we serve\, with recent examples including our disaster response efforts during and after major storms such as Hurricane Florence\, and the creation of the Lowcountry Unity Fund in the wake of the Mother Emanuel AME Church massacre to support causes addressing systemic racism.

On July 12th\, 1776\, Captain James Cook\, already lionized as the greatest explorer in British history\, set off on his third voyage in his ship the HMS Resolution. Two-and-a-half years later\, on a beach on the island of Hawaii\, Cook was killed in a conflict with native Hawaiians. How did Cook\, who was unique among captains for his respect for Indigenous peoples and cultures\, come to that fatal moment?\n\nHampton Sides’ bravura account of Cook’s last journey both wrestles with Cook’s legacy and provides a thrilling narrative of the titanic efforts and continual danger that characterized exploration in the 1700s. Cook was renowned for his peerless seamanship\, his humane leadership\, and his dedication to science\, and was also deeply interested in the native people he encountered. He treated his crew well and endeavored to learn about the societies he encountered with curiosity and without judgment. Yet something was different on this last voyage. Cook became mercurial\, ordering violent retaliation on native peoples\, resorting to the lash to enforce discipline\, and leading his two vessels into danger time and again. This may have had something to do with his secret orders\, which were to chart and claim lands before Britain’s imperial rivals could\, and to discover the fabled Northwest Passage. The tensions between Cook’s overt and covert missions came to a head on the shores of Hawaii. His first landing there was harmonious\, but when Cook returned after mapping the coast of the Pacific Northwest and Alaska\, his exploitative treatment of the Hawaiians led to the fatal encounter. \nAbout Hampton Sides: \nHampton Sides is best known for his gripping non-fiction adventure stories set in war or depicting epic expeditions of exploration. His most recent work\, The Wide Wide Sea: Imperial Ambition\, First Contact and the Fateful Final Voyage of Captain James Cook\, will be published in April 2024 from Doubleday. Hampton has been a contributor to Outside\, National Geographic\, Smithsonian\, The New Yorker\, The Wall Street Journal\, The New York Times\, and many other newspapers and magazines. His journalistic work\, collected in numerous published anthologies\, has been twice nominated for National Magazine Awards for feature writing. A native of Memphis and a Yale graduate\, Hampton is a board member of the Society of American Historians and the Author’s Guild\, and he was a recent Miller Distinguished Scholar at the Santa Fe Institute. He has been a resident fellow at Yaddo\, the MacDowell Colony\, the Aspen Institute\, the Ucross Foundation\, and Stanford University. He has an honorary doctorate in humane letters from Colorado College. Hampton lives in Santa Fe\, New Mexico. \nAbout James Scott \nA former Nieman Fellow at Harvard\, James M.
