SUMMARY:The Women Behind Delftware
DESCRIPTION:Explore the female experience through the material culture of one of the most beloved and sought-after ceramics in the world. After discovering over seventy-five pieces of Delftware in a historic Manhattan townhouse\, decorative art advisor and now author Genevieve Wheeler Brown began the journey of sharing the story of these incredible pieces of art. With illustrations of period objects\, documents\, maps\, paintings\, prints\, and drawings\, Beyond Blue and White is a colorful celebration of an iconic decorative art and dynamic women living in extraordinary times. Join author and distinguished decorative-arts advisor Genevieve Wheeler Brown and acclaimed ceramic artist Michelle Erickson for a lively\, behind-the-scenes conversation inspired by Genevieve’s new book. In collaboration with Drayton Hall\, we look forward to learning more about this fascinating story and the inspiration for their 2026 Preview Party Exhibit. \nIf you are unable to attend the event but would like to purchase one or more signed copies\, please visit Buxton Books here! \nPrior to the program\, we invite our Fellows Members to enjoy Happy Hour from 5:00 – 6:00 pm\, downstairs in the Dr. Suzan D. Boyd Fellows Club Lounge. \nAbout the Book \nAn absorbing work of cultural history that reveals the stories behind one of the world’s most coveted and beloved ceramics. When over seventy-five pieces of rare and intriguing 17th and 18th-century Delftware are rediscovered in a historic Manhattan townhouse\, decorative art advisor and writer Genevieve Wheeler Brown quickly recognizes that\, together\, these pieces tell an amazing story. What begins as a curatorial exercise quickly evolves not only into an exploration of this colorful\, expressive\, and sometimes even humorous decorative art\, coveted for hundreds of years\, but also an unexpected uncovering of forceful female lives yet untold. Connecting the accounts of women across centuries\, Beyond Blue and White allows us to craft a more complete picture of female experience through the lens of material culture. We meet female Delftware makers\, including Barbara Rotteveel\, founder of “The Three Bells” Delftware factory in 1671. We are introduced to female Delftware patrons such as Queen Mary II\, who found her means of expression while creating a vogue in the 17th century for Delft blue and white across royal courts. And then there are the female collectors beginning in the 19th century who saw the artistry and craft in these ceramics that others had overlooked. Foremost among them was Mrs. J. Pierpont Morgan and Mrs. Cornelius Vanderbilt II\, who came together with fellow New York women and laid the groundwork for women in the museum world while preserving decorative arts with an educational mission. Wheeler Brown’s rich narrative encourages us to see beyond the dazzling cobalt glaze of Delftware to consider that these vessels are also our connection to a history with a fascinating group of women at its center. \nAbout the Author \nAs a decorative art advisor and writer with over thirty years in the art world\, including a decade with Christie’s in New York and London\, Genevieve Wheeler Brown has been actively involved in the community of Delftware. She has also participated in the Antiques Roadshow as an appraiser with an eye out for overlooked “treasure.” In her role\, she has held innumerable objects\, from fake Stradivari violins to gold-mounted Faberge eggs\, considering their value but also the stories they can tell. \nAbout Michelle Erickson \nMichelle Erickson is a graduate of the College of William and Mary with a BFA in Fine and Performing Arts. An accomplished contemporary artist\, Erickson is internationally recognized for both making and historical scholarship. Michelle is a leading figure in reconstructing historic ceramic technology. Her ceramic artworks explore issues of child slavery\, social and cultural identity\, racial inequity\, and environmental geopolitics. Erickson has widely exhibited and published her artworks in private and major museum collections across the United States and Britain. Michelle’s practice in experimental archaeology has been incorporated into many exhibitions and programs; her scholarship concerning the discovery of colonial-era ceramic techniques is well documented in several volumes of the annual journal Ceramics In America\, edited by Robert Hunter and published by the Chipstone Foundation. Michelle has produced ceramics for major motion pictures such as The Patriot\, The Time Machine\, and the HBO series John Adams. In 2012\, Erickson was an artist in Residence at the Victoria Albert Museum in the category of World Class Maker. Her most recent solo exhibitions include Wild Porcelain at Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco’s Legion of Honor\, 2021-2023. and Recasting Colonialism at the Baltimore Museum of Art\, May- October 2023. Erickson’s depth of historical reference and technological virtuosity distinguish her unique career as an American artist working in clay. \n

SUMMARY:Mellon Interiors // Rendered Anew
DESCRIPTION:Known worldwide for her appreciation of arts and culture\, American philanthropist and aesthete Bunny Mellon’s signature imprint on interiors is yet again reinvigorated through a new compilation of never-before-seen renderings in The Enchanting Interiors of Bunny Mellon: Paintings by Snowy Campbell. We are honored to host a discussion with three of the key contributors to the book\, renowned designer Charlotte Moss and Sir Peter & Elinor Crane of the Oak Spring Garden Foundation\, who helped bring to life this wonderful project that Bunny commissioned and started\, but ultimately never saw to completion.  \nIf you are unable to attend the event\, but would like to purchase one or more copies\, please visit Buxton Books here. \nAbout the Book \nThe refined rooms of American philanthropist and aesthete Bunny Mellon (1910–2014)—interiors influential for their ability to combine magnificent collections of fine and decorative art with an ambiance of comfort and ease—were documented by artist Snowy Campbell\, a lasting tribute to Mellon’s impeccable taste. \nThe houses of Mellon and her husband\, Paul\, have become icons in the field of interior decoration\, filled with fine antiques\, blue-chip works of art (a Van Gogh left unframed and propped on a mantel)\, personal mementos\, and exquisite objets d’art\, all displayed in Mellon’s inimitably sophisticated yet charming way. Campbell was employed by Mellon in 1970 for six years\, just after college\, to document in paint several residences of the Mellons—presented here as a group for the first time. \nThis book presents Campbell’s paintings that capture the colors\, light\, and ambiance of rooms and gardens\, as well as intricate patterns and details of furnishings in spaces put together with help from renowned decorators John Fowler and Bruce Budd. Three residences—in New York City\, Washington\, DC\, and Upperville\, Virginia—are the focus\, with texts by society chronicler James Reginato describing Mellon’s decorating style and the ways the Mellons used each property. Opening the doors to a life of superb connoisseurship\, this volume is an homage to the interiors of a renowned couple and the extraordinary work of a young artist. \nAbout Sir Peter Crane FRS \nPeter Crane is President of the Oak Spring Garden Foundation in Virginia (osgf.org)\, an estate of Rachel Lambert Mellon that includes an exquisite garden as well as an exceptional library focused on the history of plant science\, plant exploration\, and the development of gardens and landscape design. Previously Dean of the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies and Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens\, Kew\, he is known internationally for his work on the diversity of plant life – its origin\, fossil history\, current status\, conservation\, and use. \nAbout Elinor Crane \nSince 2016\, Elinor Crane has worked as a volunteer at the Oak Spring Garden Foundation\, contributing to numerous public engagement initiatives\, as well as undertaking archival and inventory research. Her work has been featured in Smithsonian Magazine and by The White House Historical Association. She advocated for the publication of the Snowy Campbell watercolors commissioned by Mrs Mellon\, and undertook much of the research included in The Enchanting Interiors of Bunny Mellon. \n\nAbout Charlotte Moss \nSince launching her eponymous firm in 1985\, Charlotte’s name has become synonymous with Southern warmth and hospitality. She has designed private residences and executive suites across the United States and abroad\, and her retail stores have achieved wide acclaim. She has used her experience culled throughout her career to design licensed collections with Century Furniture\, Fabricut\, Stark Carpet\, Pickard\, P.E. Guerin\, Soicher-Marin\, IBU Clothing\, Artemis Design Company and more\, and her work is celebrated across eleven volumes\, the most recent title with Rizzoli publications: Charlotte Moss Flowers (2021) and Home: A Celebration: Notable Voices Reflect on the Meaning of Home (2021) which benefits the non-profit\, No Kid Hungry. Charlotte supports a variety of causes and sits on several boards; she is Emerita Trustee of the Thomas Jefferson Foundation at Monticello\, on the Board of The Bone Marrow Foundation\, The Madoo Conservancy\, The Garden Conservancy\, and the International Council of Hillwood Estate\, Museum and Gardens. Charlotte’s designs have been featured in many major publications. Accolades include the New York School of Interior Design’s Centennial Medal\, The Royal Oak Foundation’s Timeless Design award\, and Elle Décor’s Grand Master’s Listof Designers.Charlotte holds an Honorary Doctorate Degree from The New York School of Interior Design as well as Virginia Commonwealth University\, her alma mater.

SUMMARY:'Malice in Wonderland' // Hugo Vickers on Cecil Beaton
DESCRIPTION:Visiting from the UK\, author and renowned speaker Hugo Vickers brings us Malice in Wonderland\, an investigation into the whirlwind life of the photographer\, diarist\, painter\, interiors and costume designer that was Sir Cecil Walter Hardy Beaton. Cecil Beaton invited Hugo Vickers to be his authorized biographer only days before his unexpected passing. Undeterred\, Vickers used diaries\, letters\, and precious friendships and connections in Beaton’s circle to compose\, in paper\, the story of this life well-lived. For five years\, Vickers travelled the world and talked to some of the most fascinating and important social and cultural figures of the time\, including royalty such as the Queen Mother and Princess Margaret\, Lady Diana Cooper\, Grace Kelly\, Audrey Hepburn\, Truman Capote\, Irving Penn and Diana Vreeland. As part of our ongoing partnership with The Royal Oaks Foundation\, we look forward to this special reflection and a personal exploration of the a legacy of a man enveloped by a disappearing era of glamour. \nIf you are unable to attend the event\, but would like to purchase one or more copies\, please visit Buxton Books. \nAbout the Book \nThe witty and perceptive diaries kept by Cecil Beaton’s authorized biographer during his many fascinating encounters with extraordinary—often legendary—characters in his search for the real Cecil Beaton. Vickers was entrusted with Beaton’s papers\, diaries\, and\, most importantly\, access to his friends and contemporaries. In Malice in Wonderland\, Vickers shares excerpts from his personal diaries kept during this period. Drawn into Beaton’s world and accepted by its members\, Vickers\, the emerging biographer\, also began his own personal adventure. The outsider became the insider – Beaton’s friends became his friends. Malice in Wonderland is a fascinating portrait of a now-disappeared world\, and vividly and sensitively portrays some of its most fascinating characters as we travel with Vickers on his quest. \nAbout the Author \nHugo Vickers is well known as a biographer\, lecturer\, and broadcaster\, and is an acknowledged expert on the Royal Family. His first book was about Gladys Deacon\, Duchess of Marlborough (1881-1977)\, in whom he became interested when he was 16 years old. When he was 23\, he found the Duchess in the psycho-geriatric ward of a mental hospital and talked to her for two years until her death at the age of 96. He researched in Europe and America and published Gladys\, Duchess of Marlborough in 1979. Because there was considerably more material available 40 years on\, he revised this book for a new edition\, published in 2020\, as The Sphinx (and paperback in 2021). It received positive reviews. Hugo is called upon to comment on important state occasions and at times when the Royal Family is in the news. He has covered events from the first wedding of the Prince of Wales\, many royal weddings\, and the funerals of Diana\, the Queen Mother\, Prince Philip\, the State Funeral and Committal of The Queen\, and the Coronation of Charles III. The Financial Times has described him as: ‘the most knowledgeable royal biographer on the planet.’ When he spent an hour with Jacqueline Onassis in her office at Doubleday in 1990\, she said to him: ‘You look like a poet\, but your head must be full of information.’ Hugo has written many biographies of 20th century figures\, including Cecil Beaton\, Vivien Leigh\, the Duchess of Windsor\, Princess Andrew of Greece\, and the Queen Mother. His book\, The Quest for Queen Mary\, sold 40\,000 copies in various forms. He attacked the sixty episodes of the Netflix series The Crown in his book\, The Crown Dissected\, available as an e-book. In May 2021\, he published Malice in Wonderland\, with extracts from his own diaries about researching the life of Cecil Beaton. A year later\, he published a book with HRH The Duke of Kent\, entitled A Royal Life. In 2023\, he updated his 2013 book\, Coronation\, and has lectured about the Coronation in London\, New York\, Washington\, Boston\, San Francisco\, and Sonoma. That year\, he gave 44 lectures\, with four trips to the USA. Hugo published his first novel\, Pining in Paradise\, a study of the super-rich on holiday at the Cipriani Hotel in Venice in 2024. Later that year\, he published his biography of Clarissa\, Countess of Avon (widow of Anthony Eden). When not writing\, Hugo travels through the Commonwealth and Overseas Territories\, establishing Commonwealth Walkways\, and as such has visited many countries from Australia\, New Zealand\, and Canada\, to the Cook Islands\, the Falklands\, and\, as he puts it\, was once obliged to spend seven weeks touring the Caribbean. In July 2022\, Prince Edward unveiled the Platinum Jubilee Walkway in Birmingham. Queen Elizabeth II visited the Walkways eight times when he was Chairman. Hugo is a Deputy Lieutenant for the Royal County of Berkshire and has been involved with the College of St George since February 1966. He is Captain of the Lay Stewards of St George’s Chapel\, Windsor Castle\, having served as a Lay Steward since 1970. In 2019\, he was appointed a Fellow of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society. Hugo has lectured in the UK\, the USA\, Australia\, France\, Italy\, Denmark and the Bahamas – in the King’s Gallery at Buckingham Palace\, at Windsor Castle\, in Marlborough House\, Kensington Palace\, St James’s Palace\, Spencer House\, Blenheim Palace\, and the British Embassy in Paris – as well as on board transatlantic liners and many a village hall. He appeared frequently on Larry King Live between 1997 and 2005\, and had his Andy Warhol moment of fame when he appeared with Stephen Colbert in his programme\, My Fair Colbert\, about the 2011 royal wedding. He lives in London and Wiltshire and has three grown-up children. When possible\, he disappears to a tree house in Dominica. \nAbout the Royal Oak Foundation \nThe Royal Oak Foundation seeks to raise awareness of and advance the work of the National Trust of England\, Wales\, and Northern Ireland by inspiring support from the United States for the Trust’s efforts to preserve
and protect historic places and spaces—forever\, for everyone.
