The show follows a group of ‘Pogue’ teenagers who live at The Cut\, and are determined to find out what happened to the missing father of the group’s ringleader\, John B. Along the way\, they discover a legendary treasure that is tied to John B’s father. Chased by the law and a wealthy group of Kooks from Figure Eight\, the Pogues seek to overcome obstacles such as drugs\, love\, fighting\, friendship\, money\, and the disenfranchisement of being an American teen. \nAbout Jonas Pate: \nJonas Michael Pate is an American screenwriter\, director and producer. All ticket sales are final. \nAbout Admiral Radio: \nIn early 2018\, Becca was on the hunt for a vintage radio. After a little digging\, she found one tucked away in the back of a dusty antique store in Columbia\, SC.  As she and her dad loaded it up into the back of his pickup truck\, he noticed something.  It was an Admiral Radio. It didn’t mean much to her at the time\, but it turns out that she had a family connection. “My dad used to work for Admiral\,” her dad said.  It was serendipitous.  She immediately felt a connection to the radio and began doing some research on it. Founded in 1934\, Admiral Corp. and was once one of America’s top producers of radios\, TVs\, and phonographs.  At the height of World War II\, Admiral was the weekly sponsor for CBS Radio Network’s Sunday evening program\,World News Today. But as cheaper\, foreign imports made their way into the American economy\, Admiral began to crumble. They would be bought and sold to a long list of buyers\, eventually fading from the U.S. market. As fate would have it\, Becca’s late grandfather was actually a salesman for Admiral.  In fact\, he was awarded “Top Salesman of the Year” for the state of South Carolina and even won a trip to Rio with his wife through the company\, pictured above.  The award you see in the picture to the right sits atop of Becca and Coty’s very own Admiral radio today.  How’s that for divine intervention?  Although her grandfather passed away many years before she was born\, Becca and Coty are proud to help him continue the Admiral legacy. \n\n\nFor Becca and Coty\, the name Admiral Radio has acquired new significance.  In today’s fast-paced world\, it’s easy to get lost in the noise.  When they think of their ’41 Admiral radio\, they picture the folks of that era gathered around their radios at night\, listening to the evening news.  They think of the times those people shared as they huddled ’round together. They imagine a different place and time. And as a band\, this duo has created a timeless style and classic sound that speaks for itself.  In an age where adding mechanized bells and whistles are the norm\, Admiral Radio opts for a more natural feel by getting back to the basics of good songwriting and music with heart.  Their favorite venues are the quiet coffee shops and intimate spaces\, where listeners can be still and do what they do best – listen.

Beall was 23 years old and had one child and another on the way in 1976 when she and her husband Sandy purchased Blackberry Farm as their family home. Inspired by her grandmother’s work ethic and love for food and her mother’s sense of beauty and style\, Kreis fell in love with the art of entertaining and wanted Blackberry to be an extension of her own home. Her life has always represented the same sense of southern hospitality. Kreis transformed the original nine-bedroom farmhouse into a Relais & Chateaux estate and restaurant. After retiring from the inn in 1999\, she opened a photography studio and returned to Blackberry to lead various design projects. He became a Christie’s auctioneer in London in 1976\, started his own rare book business in 1980\, and more recently served as president of the Antiquarian Booksellers’ Association of America from 2008-2010. Burton\, and it is the first account that comprehensively charts the Court’s race jurisprudence. Derfner will be in conversation with Deborah K. Kennard\, successful attorney and businesswoman with extensive experience in the nonprofit sector. \nJustice Deferred dives into addressing nearly two hundred cases involving America’s racial minorities\, the authors probe the parties involved\, the justices’ reasoning\, and the impact of individual rulings. We learn of heroes such as Thurgood Marshall; villains\, including Roger Taney; and enigmas like Oliver Wendell Holmes and Hugo Black. Much of the fragility of civil rights in America is due to the Supreme Court\, but as this sweeping history also reminds us\, the justices still have the power to make good on the country’s promise of equal rights for all. He has been counsel for\, among others\, the NAACP Legal Defense Fund (LDF) and the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF)\, and helped desegregate university systems and legislatures across the South. He argued his first Supreme Court case in 1968. \nOrville Vernon Burton is the prizewinning author of several books\, including The Age of Lincoln. He is Judge Matthew J. Perry Jr. Distinguished Professor of History at Clemson University and Emeritus University Scholar and Professor of History at the University of Illinois. \nAbout Deborah K. Kennard: \nKennard is a graduate of Yale Law School and received her undergraduate degree in Political Science from Duke University\, magna cum laude. She is a former managing counsel for Mobil Oil Corporation (now Exxon Mobil Corporation). In that position\, she supervised lawyers located in the U.S.\, London and Singapore who handled legal matters related to the global supply\, trading and transportation operations of the company and its affiliates. \nShe has served on various boards in Washington\, D.C.\, and currently serves on the following nonprofit boards in Charleston\, S.C. — Spoleto Festival USA; the Gibbes Museum of Art; WINGS for Kids; and the Charleston-to-Charleston Literary Festival. She is a member of the Executive Committee of the Gibbes Museum of Art and co-chairs the Gibbes’ Distinguished Lecture Series. She has also served on the board of the South Carolina Coastal Conservation League and the Storm Eye Institute of the Medical University of South Carolina. She is married to William E. Kennard\, former U.S. Ambassador to the European Union. They live in Charleston\, South Carolina\, and have one son\, Robert\, who is a member of High Point University’s Class of 2023.

Walker International Relations & Diplomacy Series: \nDuring the summer of 2021\, the Library Society received a very generous gift to establish a program series honoring a South Carolina scholar and diplomat\, Richard L. (“Dixie”) Walker.  In 1981\, Walker was chosen by President Ronald Reagan to serve as his ambassador to the Republic of Korea. After unanimous confirmation by the U.S. Senate\, he served with distinction at that post until 1986\, longer than any other American ambassador. Walker was on the faculty of Yale University when he was recruited by Governor Donald Russell to organize a new program in international studies at the University of South Carolina (USC) that he headed until 1972. In 1961\, he founded the Institute of International Studies and headed it until 1981\, as it grew into a preeminent national and international center of research\, conferences\, consultation and publications. In 1996\, the Institute was renamed the Richard L. Walker Institute in his honor. The lecture series will cover a multitude of topics\, and we hope that the viewers gain fresh perspectives on the challenges facing the intersecting spheres of international relations & diplomacy.

SUMMARY:Speaker Series: Emmanuel Ducamp - From Western Europe to Imperial Russia: A Fair & Fruitful Transmission in Garden Design
DESCRIPTION:Please join us in welcoming Emmanuel Ducamp\, lauded art historian\, attorney\, and author\, for a discussion on garden design from Western Europe to Imperial Russia. It is no surprise\, as the newly built Russian capital city of St Petersburg was to be “a window on to Europe” that it would also benefit from West European garden design. Perhaps the best known example is that of Peterhof\, on the Finland Gulf\, where Peter the Great had cascades and water features copied from those he had seen and been impressed with during his visit of Versailles and Marly in May 1717. These precise albums of plans and views were presented to Peter Ist by the Duc d’Antin\, Surintendant des Bâtiments du roi\, on the occasion of his visit\, or simply by drawing French talents to come and work in distant Russia with enticing salaries. Throughout the eighteenth century\, the process will repeat itself\, would it be in the Imperial gardens of Peterhof\, Tsarskoie Selo and Pavlovsk\, or in private ones\, such as that of Gachina\, designed for Count Grigori Orlov\, favourite of Catherine the Great\, by two English gardeners called in from Britain. Ducamp’s presentation will thus stress how Western sources were copied in Russia\, often to find themselves adapted and reinterpreted according to local customs\, climate necessities\, or distinctive taste\, forming altogether a new tradition which has been preserved to this day. He has been traveling to Russia for more than thirty years\, working extensively with Russian curators to create a series of books on Russian palaces and parks\, the Decorative Arts or Works of Art from Russian collections. In this capacity\, he was a co-curator for the exhibition “Artistic Lyxury : Fabergé – Tiffany – Lalique” organized by the Cleveland Museum of Art and the San Francisco Legion of Honour (2009). He recently devoted his teaching at the Ecole du Louvre on Russian palaces and German royal residences\, focusing it not only on décor and architecture\, but including the study of their surrounding parks\, gardens and pavilions. His interest in this subject was sparked by the celebrated French park “Le Bois des Moutiers”\, in Normandy\, on the board of which he sat for many years\, and on which he published a book with the French publishing house Flammarion. DESCRIPTION:The Library Society is delighted to welcome Xavier Salomon for what is sure to be a riveting discussion about his experience as the Frick Collection’s Deputy Director and Peter Jay Sharp Chief Curator. For this program\, Salomon will focus on artist Rosalba Carriera (1673-1757)\, who was the most celebrated woman artist in eighteenth-century Europe. She worked in the inherently fragile medium of pastel and was always concerned for the well-being of her creations. The recent discovery of a sacred image placed by Rosalba in one of her pastels has led to discovery of a number of similar prints. We will follow in Rosalba’s footsteps\, from her house in Venice to the European courts for which her pastels were destined. All ticket sales are final. \nAbout the Speaker: \nSalomon is the Frick’s Deputy Director and Peter Jay Sharp Chief Curator. A noted scholar of Paolo Veronese\, he curated the monographic exhibition on the artist at the National Gallery\, London (2014). Previously\, Salomon was Curator in the Department of European Paintings at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and\, before that\, the Arturo and Holly Melosi Chief Curator at Dulwich Picture Gallery\, where he curated Van Dyck in Sicily\, 1624–25: Painting and the Plague (2012) and collaborated with Nicholas Cullinan on Twombly and Poussin: Arcadian Painters (2011). As an Andrew W. Mellon Curatorial Fellow at the Frick (2004–6)\, he curated Veronese’s Allegories: Virtue\, Love\, and Exploration in Renaissance Venice (2006). Salomon’s other exhibitions for the Frick include Cagnacci’s Repentant Magdalene: An Italian Baroque Masterpiece from the Norton Simon Museum (2016–17)\, Veronese in Murano: Two Venetian Renaissance Masterpieces Restored (2017–18)\, Murillo: The Self-Portraits (2017–18)\, Canova’s George Washington (2018)\, Tiepolo in Milan: The Lost Frescoes of Palazzo Archinto (2019)\, and (with Aimee Ng and Alexander Noelle) Bertoldo di Giovanni: The Renaissance of Sculpture in Medici Florence (2019–20). Salomon received his Ph.D. on the patronage of Cardinal Pietro Aldobrandini from the Courtauld Institute of Art. He has published in Apollo\, The Burlington Magazine\, Master Drawings\, The Medal\, The Art Newspaper\, Journal of the History of Collections\, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art Journal. Salomon also wrote (with Maira Kalman) the latest volume in the Frick Diptych series\, Rembrandt’s Polish Rider (2019). He is a trustee and a member of the Projects Committee of Save Venice. In 2018\, Italy named Salomon Cavaliere dell’Ordine della Stella d’Italia.

After serving as a naval intelligence officer\, he became a reporter for the Dekalb New Era\, a local weekly newspaper in Georgia. Huey then joined The Atlanta Constitution\, reporting on crime\, politics and general features. In 1975\, he joined The Wall Street Journal as a reporter in the Dallas bureau. In 1982\, he moved to Brussels to help launch the Wall Street Journal Europe as its managing editor\, serving under its editor Norman Pearlstine. Huey became the paper editor a year later. He returned to the United States in 1985 to become a senior special writer for the Wall Street Journal. He took the top editorial job at Time Inc. in 2006\, becoming the company’s sixth editor-in-chief since it was founded\, with oversight of 3500 journalists. As editor-in-chief\, he created the CNNMoney website with Turner Broadcasting System\, combining editorial content from CNN\, Fortune and Money.  In 2013\, Huey received the Gerald Loeb Lifetime Achievement Award for Distinguished Business and Financial Journalism from the UCLA Anderson School of Management. Huey served as member of the Council on Foreign Relations\, the advisory board of the Poynter Institute and the Peabody Awards. He hosts the “Whole Hog” podcast about Southern culture for Garden & Gun. \nBob Anderson is an easily recognizable name to regular “60 Minutes” viewers\, as it has appeared before some of the broadcast’s most indelible\nstories: deep investigations\, interviews with world leaders\, and human-interest stories that pique curiosity and tug at the heart. It is a name that has opened more than 180 stories on “60 Minutes” — more than any other producers in the broadcast’s history. Anderson began his career as a reporter in Cedar Rapids before producing local news in Louisville and Philadelphia. He joined CBS News in 1979 as a producer in the Chicago bureau and went on to become the network’s Tokyo bureau chief. Bob Anderson joined “60 Minutes” as a producer in 1990. Following his stint in Asia\, Anderson returned to the CBS News Washington bureau\, where he covered the 1984 Democratic and Republican National Conventions. He moved to New York to produce for the CBS Evening News and later worked as the network’s foreign editor. \nCatherine Olian is a multi-award winning television and digital producer\, director\, and writer. She has produced and\nreported 80 stories for “60 Minutes”\, as well producing for NBC News\, Bloomberg TV\, Retro Report/NYT\, various CBS News programs\, and “The Years of Living Dangerously”\, a documentary series for Showtime. Olian covered stories in over 40 countries and easily works with people from all walks of life. She possesses a great talent for reporting and storytelling to produce content with impact. Olian regularly works with high profile talent such as Kate Snow\, Harry Smith\, Natalie Morales\, Lesley Stahl\, Olivia Munn\, and previously worked with Morley Safer and Bob Simon. As a PR consultant\, she has helped clients tell their stories and get media attention online\, as well as in traditional media. She is an adjunct professor at Fordham University\, teaching graduate students in Communications. Olian has won 6 Emmy Awards\, a Columbia Dupont Award\, 2 Peabody Awards and 2 RFK Awards for her work.

Gen. Ben Hodges graduated from the United States Military Academy in May 1980 and was commissioned in the Infantry. After his first assignment as an Infantry Lieutenant in Germany\, he commanded Infantry units at the Company\, Battalion and Brigade levels at the 101st Airborne Division and in Operation IRAQI FREEDOM. His most recent operational assignment was as Director of Operations\, Regional Command South\, in Kandahar\, Afghanistan. Lt. Gen. Hodges has also served in a variety of Joint and Army Staff positions to include Tactics Instructor at the Infantry School; Chief of Plans\, 2nd Infantry Division in Korea; Aide-de-Camp to the Supreme Allied Commander Europe; Army Congressional Liaison Officer; Task Force Senior Observer-Controller at the Joint Readiness Training Center\, Fort Polk\, LA; Coalition/Joint -3 (CJ3) of Multi-National Corps-Iraq in Operation IRAQI FREEDOM; Chief of Staff\, XVIII Airborne Corps at Fort Bragg; and Director of the Pakistan Afghanistan Coordination Cell on the Joint Staff; Chief of Legislative Liaison for the United States Army. His last assignment was as Commander\, NATO Allied Land Command from 2012 to 2014. \nAbout Col. Ivo Schneider: \nCol. Schneider began his impressive military career in 1987 when he entered the Naval Academy\, and then went on to complete his education at the Federal Armed Forces University Hamburg\, focusing on Naval Architecture. From 1992-93\, Col. Schneider completed Basic Warfare Training at the Naval Operations School in Bremerhaven\, Germany. He then spent two years as a Bridge Watchkeeping Officer (BWO) on the Sail Training Ship Gorch Fock. Furthering his military education even more\, Col. Schneider studied courses in Principle Warfare and Joint Command and Staff courses as well. Col. Schneider has lead many different operations\, including the Allied Joint Force Command \, headquartered in Naples. Starting in 2009\, he joined the Planning Division of the Ministry of Defence –\nMultinational Force Planning (NATO / EU). Later he became the Commanding Officer for German Navy Task Group 2015 and Branch Head Management Training for the German Navy Headquarters. Also\, from 2018 to 2020\, Col. Schneider held position of Division Head Capability Development at German Navy Headquarters. In the summer of 2021\, he became the Naval Attaché to the United States for the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany. \n  \nAbout the Ambassador R. L. Walker International Relations & Diplomacy Series: \nDuring the summer of 2021\, the Library Society received a very generous gift to establish a program series honoring a South Carolina scholar and diplomat\, Richard L. (“Dixie”) Walker.  In 1981\, Walker was chosen by President Ronald Reagan to serve as his ambassador to the Republic of Korea. After unanimous confirmation by the U. S. Senate\, he served with distinction at that post until 1986\, longer than any other American ambassador. Walker was on the faculty of Yale University when he was recruited by Governor Donald Russell to organize a new program in international studies at the University of South Carolina (USC) that he headed until 1972. In 1961\, he founded the Institute of International Studies and headed it until 1981\, as it grew into a preeminent national and international center of research\, conferences\, consultation and publications. In 1996\, the Institute was renamed the Richard L. Walker Institute in his honor. The lecture series will cover a multitude of topics\, and we hope that the viewers gain fresh perspectives on the challenges facing the intersecting spheres of international relations & diplomacy.
