DESCRIPTION:Recently released September 2023\, La Florida presents a well-researched recount of colonial Florida. Counter to the more well known history\, in La Florida\, Professor Kevin Kokomoor explores a Spanish thread to early American history that is unfamiliar\, or rather\, unknown to most Americans. The book uncovers a Spanish influence\, not English\, which drove America’s early history or as Kokomoor suggests as “the country’s founding mythology.” \nLa Florida is an epic retelling of a pivotal period in the history of the region. Learn how Spanish colonialism in Florida sparked the British’s plans for colonization of the continent and influenced some of the most enduring traditions of the larger Southeast.  \nAbout Prof. Kokomoor: \nKevin Kokomoor is a fourth generation Floridian who grew up in the Tampa Bay area. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s Degrees in History at the University of South Florida and his Doctorate in Early American History at Florida State University. His first academic position after graduate school was at Coastal Carolina University in Myrtle Beach\, South Carolina\, where he is currently employed. \nIn addition to La Florida\, he has also authored several articles in academic journals\, including Journal of Southern History\, Georgia Historical Quarterly\, Florida Historical Quarterly\, Journal of Sport History\, and Journal of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era. He won the Thompson Award for the best article published in Florida Historical Quarterly in 2009 and the E. Merton Coulter Award for the best article published in Georgia Historical Quarterly in 2013. In 2017 he was a Howard H. Peckham Fellow of Revolutionary America at the Clements Library at the University of Michigan. Other sources of support include the American Philosophical Society\, the David Library of the American Revolution\, Emory University\, and the University of Florida.

A visionary artist and cultural activist\, Thompson is the first European woman to have composed and conducted a symphony within the last 40 years. New Nation Rising\, A 21st Century Symphony performed and recorded by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra is an epic musical story celebrating London’s thousand-year history\, and one in which the RPO is accompanied by two choirs\, solo singers\, a rapper and drummers\, a total of nearly 200 performers. Scott make the case for the lasting influence of these port cities—and Atlantic world history—on the economy\, society\, and culture of the contemporary South. \nAbout the Authors: \nBlake C. Scott                                                                                                                                                                                Historian\, writer\, Associate Professor of International Studies\, Blake C. Scott is interested in the diverse cultures and ecologies that connect the Caribbean with the US South. At the College of Charleston\, he teaches in the International Studies Program\, examining a range of issues related to globalization and global environmental change. He is the author of the book Unpacked: A History of Caribbean Tourism (Cornell University Press) and co-editor of Port Cities of the Atlantic World: Sea-Facing Histories of the US South (University of South Carolina Press). His articles include pieces in the journal of Environmental History\, the Journal of Tourism History\, The Huffington Post and Charleston’s Post and Courier\, among others. His research has received funding from the Fulbright Program\, the Smithsonian Institution\, the University of Texas at Austin\, and the School of Languages\, Cultures\, and World Affairs at the College of Charleston. When not in the classroom or deep into reading and writing\, you can find Dr. Scott wandering and wondering through the marshes and waterways of the Lowcountry.  \nJacob Steer-Willams                                                                                                                                                                  Professor Steere-Williams holds two professional appointments in Charleston; as Associate Professor of History at the College of Charleston\, and as President of the Waring Historical Library at MUSC. His interests are in the history of disease\, medicine\, and the environment across the Atlantic World\, including the South Carolina Lowcountry. Professor Steere-Williams is a Fellow of the prestigious Royal Historical Society of the UK. He is the author of the 2020 book The Filth Disease: Typhoid Fever and the Practices of Epidemiology in Victorian England (University of Rochester Press)\, and with Blake Scott Port Cities of the Atlantic World; Sea-Facing Histories of the US South (University of South Carolina Press\, 2023). In addition to dozens of articles and book chapters\, Professor Steere-Williams writes for broad public audiences\, including The Post and Courier\, The Washington Post\, The LA Times\, CNN\, Time Magazine\, The Lancet\, and The British Medical Journal. He also serves as the Director of the MA Program in History at the College of Charleston\, and the Associate Editor of the Journal of the History of Medicine and Allied Sciences with Oxford University Press.

DESCRIPTION:Along with the College of Charleston we are thrilled to celebrate the arts and culture through a shared appreciation and history of the work of William Shakespeare. Join us for a reception format and enjoy refreshments and light hors d’oeuvres while the College of Charleston Theatre performers will creatively (and perhaps spontaneously!) interject various soliloquies\, sonnets or other abbreviated rendition of Shakespeare works and performances. DESCRIPTION:The Library Society is thrilled for the second collaboration with the ETV Endowment of South Carolina and SCETV to screen Sisterhood SC Suffragist: The Grimke Sisters (56 min). Appropriate for Women’s History Month\, we look forward to sharing one of a three-part series that premiered during 2020\, highlighting South Carolina Suffragists in celebration of the passing of the 19th amendment and the important role that SC had in the national movement. Although best known as fierce abolitionists\, Sarah and Angelina Grimke were the first South Carolina Women to publicly advocate for women’s suffrage. The story traces the lives of the Grimke sisters and other SC voices in the struggle for women’s rights from the late 1830’s through the Civil War. \nIn conjunction with the screening\, we are honored to welcome producers Beryl Dakers and Betsy Newman to share additional insights and context on the making of the series as well as answer questions afterward. \nTickets are free with RSVP. For two evenings we will host an intimate grouping to showcase the brilliant talent of our CSO musicians. Performances will offer an exciting range of chamber music literature\, and riveting works from composers such as Brahms\, Gilére\, and Cabaniss! \nString Quintet No. 2 in G major\, also known as the “Prater Quintet” was intended to be Johannes Brahms last work\, though he went on to compose a few more pieces. Published in 1891\, “The Prater Quinet” was rumored to be inspired by a public park in Vienna\, and “the delightful women” there.
