SUMMARY:Charleston Library Society Book Club ~ David Grann's "The Wager"
DESCRIPTION:CLS Book Club is FREE\, in-person\, and open to the public—whether you’ve finished the book\, are thinking about starting it\, or couldn’t make it past the half-way point. All that is required is an RSVP via the form below. \nOffered a few times a year\, the CLS Book Club seeks to explore a wide range of topics\, authors and diversity within its book selections. Under this objective\, the Book Club also offers space for conversation\, perspectives and discourse. \nAbout the book:\nThe Wager is a grand tale of human behavior at the extremes told by one of our greatest nonfiction writers. Grann’s recreation of the hidden world on a British warship rivals the work of Patrick O’Brian\, his portrayal of the castaways’ desperate straits stands up to the classics of survival writing such as The Endurance\, and his account of the court martial has the savvy of a Scott Turow thriller. As always with Grann’s work\, the incredible twists of the narrative hold the reader spellbound. \nFor a copy of the book\, check out our catalog here\, or shop local at Buxton Books.

SUMMARY:Book Tour Exclusive // Jill McCorkle's Latest: Old Crimes
DESCRIPTION:Just days after pub-week\, Charleston Library Society and Buxton Books are pleased to welcome New York Times bestselling author Jill McCorkle to Charleston. \nOur secrets are something we hold near to our hearts at all times\, whether big or small. Her new release\, Old Crimes\, explores the stories of different characters that treasure their secrets\, and have to deal with the consequences. McCorkle weaves the tales of multiple characters\, and allows the reader to feel at home in the chaos secrets can cause. \nSecure your seat for this exclusive opportunity to share an audience with this bestselling author.  \nTickets*: PURCHASE HERE \n$35 – Members or $40 – General Admission // 1 Ticket and 1 signed copy of Old Crimes \n$45 – Limited Option // 2 Tickets and 1 signed copy of Old Crimes* \n*There will be a limited number of two for one tickets available\, these tickets include two attendees and one signed copy of Old Crimes.  \nNOTE: If you are unable to attend the program\, and wish to secure a signed copy (or copies!)\, pre-order through the following link: Old Crimes or call Buxton Books at (843) 723-1670. \nABOUT THE BOOK \nOld Crimes delves into the lives of characters who hold their secrets and misdeeds close\, even as the past continues to reverberate over time and across generations. And despite the characters’ yearnings for connection\, they can’t seem to tell the whole truth. In “Low Tones\,” a woman uses her hearing impairment as a way to guard herself from her husband’s commentary. In “Lineman\,” a telephone lineman strains to connect to his family even as he feels pushed aside in a digital world. In “Confessional\,” a young couple buys a confessional booth for fun\, only to discover the cost of honesty. \nProfoundly moving and unforgettable\, for fans of Alice Munro\, Elizabeth Strout\, and Lily King\, the stories in Old Crimes reveal why McCorkle has long been considered a master of the form\, probing lives full of great intensity\, longing and affection\, and deep regret. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nJill McCorkle has the distinction of having published her first two novels on the same day in 1984.  Of these novels\, the New York Times Book Review said: “one suspects the author of The Cheer Leader is a born novelist.  With July 7th\, she is also a full grown one.” Since then she has published five other novels—most recently\, Hieroglyphics—and four collections of short stories. Five of her books have been named New York Times notable books and four of her stories have appeared in Best American Short Stories.  McCorkle has received the New England Booksellers Award\, the John Dos Passos Prize for Excellence in Literature\, the North Carolina Award for Literature and the Thomas Wolfe Prize; she was recently inducted into the NC Literary Hall of Fame. McCorkle has taught at Harvard\, Brandeis\, and NC State where she remains affiliated with the MFA Program in creative writing and she is core faculty in the Bennington Writing Seminars.

SUMMARY:Life Long Learning: Popular Music of the Vietnam Era // 8 week Course
DESCRIPTION:With great anticipation\, Life-long Learning returns to the Library Society in a daytime format.  Join Dana Beach and Teddy Gilbreth for an eight-part series exploring the music that helped shape the anti-war movement and established the foundations of rock and roll during the 60’s through video and audio recordings of seminal musicians of the era\, along with their historical influences.\n \nThe series will begin with a historical reflection on the roots of American popular music – highlighting European contributions to America’s emerging musical culture and illuminating the African origins of rock and roll – spirituals\, gospel\, and the blues. The series will examine the significance of early songbooks and illuminate the importance of itinerant song collectors.\n \nThe second part of the series will focus on the convergence of blues and folk into early manifestations of rock and roll. It will highlight the musicians and songs that emerged from the social turmoil surrounding America’s involvement in the war and will explore the influence music had in mobilizing and organizing anti-war\, and to a considerably lesser extent\, pro-war efforts. The discussion will include the historical\, political\, social and musical circumstances in which the war was executed.  \nDATES: Jan 22nd\, 29th – Feb 5th\, 12th\, 26th – Mar 4th\, 11th\, 18th. \nTickets:  Sold only as an 8-week course (Seating is limited to 30) \nMembers – $225 // General Admission – $275 \nTo purchase\, click here or call 843.723.9912 during Box Office Hours (11:00AM–4:00PM\, Monday through Thursday). \n

SUMMARY:Amb. R. L. Walker International Relations & Diplomacy Series: Kristjan Prikk on Estonia
DESCRIPTION:Russia\, Ukraine\, Europe and beyond – Objectives\, Risks\, Opportunities. The Charleston Library Society is honored to host Ambassador of Estonia\, Kristjan Prikk\, as part of our ongoing Ambassador R. L. Walker International Relations & Diplomacy Series that was initiated in 2021. In conjunction with Zeitgeist Foundation\, we are pleased to partner in honoring the Anniversary of the German-French Friendship Treaty where their organization\, along with the Alliance Française\, invite an Ambassador of the E.U. (someone neither French nor German) to share insights of their perspectives on the European Union. In his third diplomatic posting to Washington\, DC\, Kristjan Prikk has served as Estonia’s Ambassador to the United States since May 2021. \nTickets:  Members – $10 // General Admission – $15 \nTo purchase\, click here or call 843.723.9912 during Box Office Hours (11:00AM–4:00PM\, Monday through Thursday). \nAbout Ambassador Prikk: \nBefore assuming his current duties\, Prikk served as the Permanent Secretary of the Estonian Ministry of Defense. Prior to becoming the Permanent Secretary\, Mr. Prikk worked as Undersecretary for Defense Policy in the Ministry of Defense from July 2017 to August 2018. From 2015 to 2017 Mr. Prikk was the Director of National Security and the Defense Coordination Unit of the Estonian Government Office. He also served as Deputy Director of the same office for two years prior to becoming the Director in 2015. His previous Ministry of Defense assignments include serving as Defense Counsellor at the Estonian Embassy in Washington\, D.C. (2010-2013) and as Director of International Cooperation Department in Tallinn (2007-2010). Mr. Prikk holds a Master’s degree from the United States Army War College and a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Tartu\, Estonia. Mr. Prikk is married to Liis\, with whom he has two daughters and a son. \nPrior to joining the Ministry of Defense\, Mr. Prikk worked at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on NATO issues mainly pertaining to its enlargement and its partnership with Russia\, Ukraine\, and Georgia in the Security Policy and Arms Control Bureau (2006-2007). Additionally\, he has held assignments as a diplomat covering trade and economic issues at the Estonian Embassy in Washington (2002-2006) and as a foreign trade and World Trade Organization specialist at the Foreign Ministry’s headquarters in Tallinn (1999-2002). \nHe has been decorated with the Order of the White Star (4th Class) by the President of the Republic of Estonia\, the Cross of Merit (1st Class) of the Ministry of Defense of Estonia\, as well as other decorations from the Estonian Defense Forces\, the Estonian Foreign Intelligence Service\, and the Estonian Police and Border Guard Board\, among others. \nAbout the Ambassador R. L. Walker International Relations & Diplomacy Series: \nDuring the summer of 2021\, the Library Society received a very generous gift to establish a program series honoring a South Carolina scholar and diplomat\, Richard L. (“Dixie”) Walker\, who also happens to be the father of Anne W. Cleveland\, a long-standing and transformative Executive Director at the Charleston Library Society.  In 1981\, Walker was chosen by President Ronald Reagan to serve as his ambassador to the Republic of Korea. After unanimous confirmation by the U. S. Senate\, he served with distinction at that post until 1986\, longer than any other American ambassador. Walker was on the faculty of Yale University when he was recruited by Governor Donald Russell to organize a new program in international studies at the University of South Carolina (USC) that he headed until 1972. In 1961\, he founded the Institute of International Studies and headed it until 1981\, as it grew into a preeminent national and international center of research\, conferences\, consultation and publications. In 1996\, the Institute was renamed the Richard L. Walker Institute in his honor. The lecture series will cover a multitude of topics\, and we hope that the viewers gain fresh perspectives on the challenges facing the intersecting spheres of international relations & diplomacy.

SUMMARY:Ukraine // What's At Stake and What We Need to Know
DESCRIPTION:The Library Society is honored to welcome Jim Hake\, CEO and Founder of Spirit of America\, for a front lines perspective on the war in Ukraine. \nSince Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2014\, Spirit of America has been actively helping Ukraine defend its freedom and democracy against Russia’s aggression. Having visited Ukraine nine times since then\, Jim will share what’s at stake and how American citizens are defending our values in the face of brutal aggression not seen since World War II. \nWorking closely with the US military\, Spirit of America has delivered 800+ tons of protective\, nonlethal aid — surveillance drones\, communications gear\, vehicles\, body armor\, helmets\, medical supplies\, food and more — to Ukrainian soldiers as well as targeted humanitarian support to civilians. As an inspirational example\, Jim will present stories of courage\, commitment and hope. His privately-funded nonprofit represents patriotism without politics and has risen to become the nation’s largest non-partisan vehicle for Americans who want to act to support our national interests and values overseas. \nJim’s recently published Wall Street Journal article explains why the outcome in Ukraine is of critical importance to the United States. \nAs longtime supporters and friends\, Col. William W. Griffen USMC (Ret’d) and Mrs. Carrie Snyder Griffen\, have generously worked to make this appearance possible for the Charleston community. \nTickets: Members – $10 // General Admission – $15 \nThis event is almost sold out! Tickets: PURCHASE HERE \nPlease send a note to ryon@charlestonlibrarysociety.org to add your name to the waitlist if this event reaches capacity and you would like to attend. We will be in touch if there are any cancellations. \nAbout Jim Hake:  \nPrior to Spirit of America Jim was an entrepreneur. He founded and sold Access Media\, one of the first internet media companies. In 2000 and 2001\, Jim was named a “Technology Pioneer” by the World Economic Forum. Jim has been honored at the Marines Evening Parade\, is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations\, and is an honorary member of the US Army Civil Affairs Regiment. He is a contributing author to Warriors and Citizens: American Views of Our Military\, a book edited by General Jim Mattis and Dr. Kori Schake. Jim has given talks at the TED conference\, the Bush School of Government\, the Aspen Institute\, the Fletcher School\, Dartmouth’s Tuck School\, SMU\, and USC. Jim received a BA with distinction in economics from Dartmouth College. Throughout college\, Jim worked as a member of Local 161 of the International Association of Ironworkers — the riggers union in Philadelphia. After Dartmouth\, Jim trained as a hovercraft pilot with the Canadian Coast Guard and was part of a team that tested the viability of commercial hovercraft transportation in southwestern Alaska. Jim earned an MBA from the Stanford University Graduate School of Business. He is the founder and president emeritus of The Friends of Arjay Miller (FOAM)\, Stanford business school’s longest-lived social institution. \nAbout Spirit of America: Jim Hake founded Spirit of America in response to the attacks of 9/11. He wanted to stand up for what America stands for. Spirit of America is a privately-funded 501c3 citizen service organization. It is the only nonprofit recognized by Congress and approved by the Department of Defense to work alongside deployed US troops and provide private assistance in support of their missions. Spirit of America is “not-neutral” – it takes the side of America and our allies\, partners\, and friends. It brings the entrepreneurial power of our citizens to support America’s security\, values\, and leadership. It fills the gaps between what is needed and what government can do. Former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General (Ret.) Joe Dunford says\, “Spirit of America represents a new capability – not just another nonprofit” that is “important to our country’s future.”

SUMMARY:Ties that Bind: New insights into America's Spanish influence
DESCRIPTION:Recently released September 2023\, La Florida presents a well-researched recount of colonial Florida. Counter to the more well known history\, in La Florida\, Professor Kevin Kokomoor explores a Spanish thread to early American history that is unfamiliar\, or rather\, unknown to most Americans. The book uncovers a Spanish influence\, not English\, which drove America’s early history or as Kokomoor suggests as “the country’s founding mythology.” \nLa Florida is an epic retelling of a pivotal period in the history of the region. The level of research is impeccable and the characters – especially the Florida-dwelling Native Americans – are wonderfully realized\, making this a highly interesting and absorbing work of historical fiction. \nTickets: Members – $10 // General Admission – $15 \nTickets: PURCHASE HERE \nAbout the Book: \nLa Florida challenges the general assumption that whatever is important or interesting about this country is a product of its English past. Dig deeper into Hispanic and Caribbean history\, and how important happenings elsewhere in the Spanish colonial world influenced the discovery and colonization of the American Southeast. Follow Spanish sailors discovering the edges of a new continent and greedy\, violent conquistadors quickly moving in to find riches\, along with Catholic missionaries on their search for religious converts. Learn how Spanish colonialism in Florida sparked the British’s plans for colonization of the continent and influenced some of the most enduring traditions of the larger Southeast.  \nAbout Prof. Kokomoor: \nKevin Kokomoor is a fourth generation Floridian who grew up in the Tampa Bay area. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s Degrees in History at the University of South Florida and his Doctorate in Early American History at Florida State University. His first academic position after graduate school was at Coastal Carolina University in Myrtle Beach\, South Carolina\, where he is currently employed. \nIn addition to La Florida\, he has also authored several articles in academic journals\, including Journal of Southern History\, Georgia Historical Quarterly\, Florida Historical Quarterly\, Journal of Sport History\, and Journal of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era. He won the Thompson Award for the best article published in Florida Historical Quarterly in 2009 and the E. Merton Coulter Award for the best article published in Georgia Historical Quarterly in 2013. In 2017 he was a Howard H. Peckham Fellow of Revolutionary America at the Clements Library at the University of Michigan. Other sources of support include the American Philosophical Society\, the David Library of the American Revolution\, Emory University\, and the University of Florida.
