SUMMARY:CLS Wine Club // Spring Whites
DESCRIPTION:As the newest CLS tradition\, created through members in our Fellows Lounge\, CLS Wine Club continues with great acclaim. For our Spring session\, we will focus on white varietals deserving some attention (specifics varietal yet to be finalized)\, along with academic and nuanced insights from our founding aficionados Jerry Mitchell and Tim Cantopher. Their learned preferences and curiosities from storied outings and clubs centered around the complexities of wine coupled with our partner Monarch Wines\, allow just the right blend of lesser-known vineyards and small-production varietals blended with a bit of wit and wisdom\, to boot. Capacity is limited so please reserve your seat soon! \nThis Spring we will be taking a World Tour to explore the diverse offerings of the varietal\, Chenin Blanc. \nPlease Note: These wines are available in limited and time-sensitive quantities; therefore\, we must secure them ahead of time. For this reason\, your admission also includes one of each of the four bottles to take home. (Avg $35/bottle) For those who come as a couple\, there is an option for two people and four bottles. Seating is limited in order to host a conversation-style wine tasting where the experts will walk us through four specifically chosen bottles and dissect the nuance associated with each. Part of participating in the wine club is the opportunity to purchase wines that would otherwise not be available at retail. \nAbout Monarch and Justin Coleman \nYears of selecting wines for some of NYC’s favorite spots (Balthazar\, Commerce\, Morandi\, The Mark) have helped Justin (owner and proprietor of Monarch Wines) cultivate strong relationships with both European and American winemakers\, importers\, and distributors. From lugging bottles to creating beverage programs\, to managing operations\, Justin has worked with some of the most exalted names in the business. Seeking a slower pace of life for his young family at the time (wife\, Sarah\, and eldest daughter\, Fia)\, Justin headed south to Charleston in 2013\, landing at The Ordinary as General Manager. At The Ordinary\, Justin fostered an appreciation for\, and understanding of\, the community in Charleston. Monarch Wine Merchants opened in 2017\, filling a void in the market at the time for a true neighborhood wine shop\, focused on wine and only wine. Delivering the highest level of customer service has become a hallmark of the shop. Justin is forever passionate about keeping the shelves well-stocked at the brick and mortar\, while also sourcing highly allocated wines for both local clients and those further afield. \nThere are two ticket options available: \n*Single $285 // $145 ticket price + $140 wine price (4 bottles to take home) \n*Couple $430 // $290 ticket price + $140 wine price (4 bottles to take home) \nFellows members will have first option for securing seats.

SUMMARY:Spring Symposium // Tenacity's Renaissance
DESCRIPTION:Described by scholar W.E.B. DuBois as the “leading portrait painter of the race\,” Charleston native and prolific artist Edwin “Teddy” Augustus Harleston paved the way for artists of color in the South. Joined by his wife and photographer\, Elise\, the two not only planted the foundations for a Harlem Renaissance-esque artistic movement in the South\, but also passionately participated in the Civil Rights movement. Award-winning writer\, historian and filmmaker Charles Kaufmann joins us for a two-day symposium to illuminate the work and lives of two profoundly impactful artists during the late 19th and early 20th centuries\, and the enduring love for their craft\, and one another\, that kept them going in times of strife. During the evening program\, Charles will be joined by a panel representing the array of organizations which collaborated in the crafting of the documentary\, including Elizabeth Chew\, Chief Executive Officer of the South Carolina Historical Society\, Sara Arnold of the Gibbes Museum\, Harlan Greene\, and Georgette Mayo with the Avery Research Center. The soundtrack of the film features choral and piano music by the Charlestonian composer and educator Harl Fleming\, who happens to be Edwin’s nephew and an important component of the Harleston’s story\, compounding the overall character development and further ties to the music of the Charleston Renaissance. \nEVENING PROGRAM ONLY (Thursday\, May 8th)  $35 // Admission to the lecture on Thursday\, 6:00 PM–7:00 PM \nTWO-DAY SYMPOSIUM (Thursday\, May 8th & Friday\, May 9th) – $55 // Admission to Thursday’s lecture\, plus the extended session on Friday from 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM\, which will include the two-hour screening of Tenacity and small-group discussion with Charles Kaufmann. \nTenacity Trailer: The Story of Edwin and Elise Harleston here! \nThis program is in partnership with the South Carolina Historical Society\, the Avery Research Center\, and the Gibbes Museum of Art. Panelists for the Thursday program include: Harlan Greene\, Elizabeth Chew\, Sara Arnold\, and Georgette Mayo.  \nAbout Charles Kaufmann \nCharles Kaufmann is an award-winning writer\, historian\, filmmaker\, composer and the founding director of The Longfellow Chorus\, a professional non-profit performing arts organization in Portland\, Maine. He has given lecture-screenings of his feature-length documentary “Samuel Coleridge-Taylor and His Music in America\, 1900–1912\,” at Oberlin Conservatory; Boston University African-American Studies; Yale-Norfolk Festival; SUNY Buffalo; Georgetown University; Colour of Music Black Classical Musicians Festival\, Charlestown\, South Carolina; and Pasadena City College. His short documentary\, “That’s None of My Business\,” about the attempt on November 1\, 1963\, by two youthful civil rights activists to desegregate a concert by The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in Jackson\, Mississippi\, was premiered in January 2022 in-theatre at Music for Galway (a music festival in Ireland)\, and screened in March 2022 at the Oxford Film Festival\, Oxford\, Mississippi\, and in November 2022 at the North Dakota Human Rights Film Festival\, Fargo\, North Dakota.  Twice a finalist at the prestigious Ithaca Choral Composition Contest\, his choral setting of the poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow\, “Snow-Flakes\,” won the second prize in 2007. He is currently working on a feature documentary about the life and work of a young artist from Pittsburgh\, Frederick Demmler\, who was killed in Belgium near the end of the First World War\, “This Collapse of All Things: The Short Life of Frederick A. Demmler\, Artist.” In May 2023\, he presented his paper\, “The Super-Honeymoon of Fred Demmler and Alexander James\,” as part of the panel of the Henry James Society at the 34th Annual Conference of The American Literature Association in Boston. His short piece of creative nonfiction\, “An Elegy for Your Cat\,” nominated for the 2018 Pushcart Prize\, appears in The Citron Review and in the anthology Citron 10: Celebrating 10 Years of the Short Form. Other short stories can be found on East of the Web and in “Bound Off Short Story Podcast: Issue 4.” He was a fiction finalist in the 2009 Aesthetica Creative Works Competition with his short piece of fiction\, “She\,” which was published in print in Aesthetica Creative Works Annual. His feature drama screenplay “A Possession for All Time” (2022) has been recognized multiple times at international screenplay competitions\, twice as award winner\, twice as finalist\, once as semi-finalist\, four times as quarter-finalist\, and four times as honorable mention. \nPrior to the program\, we invite our Fellows Members to enjoy a Happy Hour from 5:00 – 6:00pm\, downstairs in the Dr. Suzan D. SUMMARY:Honoring Mother Emanuel
DESCRIPTION:Just ahead of the 10 year anniversary\, we are incredibly honored to host New York Times and Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Kevin Sack in conversation with reporter Carolyn Murray\, for the pub-day release of Mother Emanuel\, a comprehensive history of one of the nation’s most important African American churches and the profound story of courage and grace that came amidst the tragedy of the shootings that took the lives of the church’s charismatic pastor and eight other worshippers on June 17\, 2015.  Even as the first A.M.E church in the South\, few people beyond our Lowcountry knew of Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston—Mother Emanuel—before that night. The outpouring of forgiveness from the victims’ families that followed exhibited a resilience this nation has never seen. Through the microcosm of this congregation\, Sack explores the development of a unique practice of Christianity\, from its daring breakaway from white churches in 1817\, through the traumas of Civil War and Reconstruction\, to its critical role in the Civil Rights Movement and beyond. At its core\, Mother Emanuel is an epic tale of perseverance\, not just of a congregation\, but of a people who withstood enslavement and Jim Crow and all manner of violence with an unbending faith. \nIf you are unable to attend the event\, but would like to purchase one or more signed copies\, please visit Buxton Books here. \nAbout the Book \n\n\nMother Emanuel explores the fascinating history that brought the church to this moment\, and the depth of the desecration committed in its fellowship hall. It reveals how African Methodism cultivated from the harshest American soil\, and how Black suffering shaped forgiveness into both a religious practice and a survival tool. Kevin Sack\, who has written about race in his native South for more than four decades\, uses the church to trace the long arc of Black life in the city where nearly half of enslaved Africans disembarked in North America and where the Civil War began. We’ll meet unsung heroes like Denmark Vesey\, the former slave whose aborted rebellion plot led to his hanging and the destruction of the original church; Rev. Richard Harvey Cain\, Emanuel’s first pastor after the Civil War\, who also won election to Congress during Reconstruction; Rev. Benjamin J. Glover\, who served simultaneously as pastor and a crusading NAACP leader during the 1960s; and Reverend Clementa Pinckney\, a respected state legislator\, whose murder in 2015 inspired President Barack Obama’s memorable “Amazing Grace” eulogy. \nAbout the Author \nKevin Sack is a veteran journalist who has written broadly about national affairs for more than four decades and has shared in three Pulitzer Prizes. A native of Jacksonville\, Florida\, and a graduate of Duke University\, he spent thirty years on the staff of The New York Times\, where he specialized in writing longform narrative and investigative reports\, often related to race. He also has written for the Los Angeles Times and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution\, and his work has appeared in The New York Times Magazine. He was a 2019 Emerson Collective Fellow at New America. \nAbout Carolyn Murray \nMurray\, a native of New York\, grew up in Charleston and graduated from Burke High School in 1984 and later from the University of South Carolina in 1988. It was during her senior year at USC when she interned at WPAL-AM in Charleston — an internship that would catapult a celebrated career in delivering the latest news and vital information to her own community. Murray left Charleston in 2001 to work as a consumer reporter at WBBM-TV in Chicago but ultimately made her return to the Lowcountry in 2003\, joining the WCBD-TV team as an evening anchor. Murray has been awarded numerous EMMYs for her anchoring and reporting through the years\, along with various awards and accolades from industry leaders. She delivers the news weekly on News 2 at 4\, 5\, 6\, 11pm and on the Lowcountry CW at 10pm.
