SUMMARY:Book Tour Exclusive // A Friday with Mitch Albom
DESCRIPTION:Though Friday programs are a rare occurrence at the Library Society\, the launch of Mitch Albom’s newest book is more than enough reason to open up the day to an event. \nOn November 17\, from 6:00PM-7:00PM\, CLS and Buxton Books presents the Tuesdays with Morrie author who will spend an evening discussing the themes that drive his latest novel. \nSecure your seat for this exclusive pub-week audience with the international bestselling author \nTickets: $40 – Members // $45 – General Admission \nTickets include 1 signed copy of The Little Liar \nPURCHASE HERE. \n*If you are unable to attend\, please pre-order your copy before they sell out here! \nABOUT THE BOOK \nNew York Times bestselling writer Mitch Albom is a magical storyteller who imbues hope into universal tales of our human imperfections and eternal search for meaning. His books transcend borders and cultural boundaries\, selling more than 40 million copies worldwide in forty-eight languages. His classic Tuesdays with Morrie is the bestselling memoir of all time which topped the list for four straight years and celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2022. “Think of Mitch Albom as the Babe Ruth of popular literature\,” Time magazine has said\, “hitting the ball out of the park every time he’s at bat.” \nIn his powerful new novel\, The Little Liar\, due out November 14\, Albom turns for the first time to one of the darkest chapters in human history—the Holocaust. A fable-like adventure that travels from Greece under Nazi occupation to America after the war\, it intertwines the lives of three children who were victims of the war’s deceptions as they confront both revenge and devotion\, and ultimately seek the grace of redemption. Narrated by the voice of Truth itself\, this singular and timeless story finds the power of love amidst the darkest of realities. \nYoung Nico Krispis\, who has never told a lie\, is tricked by a German officer who promises him that Nico’s family will be saved if he can do one small task: convince the Jewish residents of his town to board the trains that will transport them to “safety.” Day after day\, the eleven-year-old unknowingly plays his part in the evacuation —until the final day when he is betrayed\, and his own family is loaded into the boxcar headed to Auschwitz. Nico\, forced to stay behind\, loses the ability to speak the truth ever again. After the war\, his brother Sebastian and their schoolmate Fannie\, who have miraculously survived the concentration camps and death marches\, begin their search for Nico\, who has become a pathological liar. All three continue to be shadowed by the Nazi officer who forever altered their lives. As the decades pass\, the consequences of what each of them said and did unfold\, and we learn the price we pay for the lies we tell and the secrets we hide\, the ending of “The Little Liar” is as stunning and thought-provoking as anything Albom has ever written. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nMitch Albom\, a “writer with soul” (Los Angeles Times)\, is an author\, screenwriter\, playwright and nationally syndicated columnist. Four of his books\, including Morrie\, The Five People You Meet in Heaven\, For One More Day\, and Have a Little Faith\, have been made into highly acclaimed television movies for ABC. Albom has founded nine charities in and around Detroit\, including the first ever 24-hour medical clinic for homeless children in America\, and also operates an orphanage in Port-Au-Prince\, Haiti\, which he visits every month without exception. He lives with his wife\, Janine\, in Detroit. \nThe Little Liar extends Albom’s estimable storytelling gifts as it underscores the themes of humanity and grace that have defined his work. I hope you will plan prominent review and feature coverage\, and I look forward to talking with you about the possibilities.

SUMMARY:Speaker Series // Let's Talk: Rethinking Communication Culture for the Modern Era
DESCRIPTION:Please join authors and experts Nadine Strossen and Greg Lukianoff for an evening of discussion on\, fittingly\, the power and changing shape of public discourse. Both speakers will draw from their most recent publications (both 2023)\, Strossen’s Free Speech: What Everyone Needs to Know and Lukianoff’s The Canceling of the American Mind. \nBut this is not a discussion about grievances or current opinions on right and wrong platforms for communication; rather\, these two leading voices will speak—literally—to the history of debate\, as well as what we gain from exposure to varying points of view. \nFrom the earliest days of social organization and the early structure of societies and states\, dynamic and public forums on relevant issues helped to inform populations\, underpin policy\, and fuel intellectual pursuits and exploration that enhanced the world as a whole. This program\, as well as our event highlighting the pivotal contributions made by the Clionian Debating Society in a time of great evolution in Charleston\, find a home at the Library Society precisely because they speak to our mission of forging connections and offering pathways for expression and lifelong learning. \nTickets:  Members – $10 // General Admission – $15 \nTo purchase\, click here or call 843.723.9912 during Box Office Hours (11:00AM–4:00PM\, Monday through Thursday). \nAbout Greg Lukianoff:\nGreg Lukianoff is an attorney\, New York Times best-selling author\, and the President and CEO of the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE). He is the author of Unlearning Liberty: Campus Censorship and the End of American Debate\, Freedom From Speech\, FIRE’s Guide to Free Speech on Campus\, and he co-authored The Coddling of the American Mind: How Good Intentions and Bad Ideas Are Setting Up a Generation for Failure\, with Jonathan Haidt. Most recently he co-authored The Canceling of the American Mind: Cancel Culture Destroys Institutions and Threatens Us All—But There Is a Solution (due out October\, 2023). Greg is also an Executive Producer of Can We Take a Joke? (2015)\, a feature-length documentary that explores the collision between comedy\, censorship\, and outrage culture\, both on and off campus\, and of Mighty Ira: A Civil Liberties Story (2020)\, an award-winning feature-length film about the life and career of the former ACLU Executive Director Ira Glasser. \nAbout Nadine Strossen:\nNadine Strossen\, the John Marshall Harlan II Professor of Law Emerita at New York Law School and a past President of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) from 1991-2008\, currently serves as a Senior Fellow with FIRE. As a leading expert on constitutional law and civil liberties\, she has testified before Congress on multiple occasions. She sits on the advisory boards of the ACLU\, Academic Freedom Alliance\, Heterodox Academy\, National Coalition Against Censorship\, and the University of Austin. The National Law Journal has named Strossen one of America’s “100 Most Influential Lawyers.” Her many honorary degrees and awards include the American Bar Association’s prestigious Margaret Brent Women Lawyers of Achievement Award (2017). In 2023\, the National Coalition Against Censorship (an alliance of more than 50 national non-profit organizations) selected Strossen for its Judy Blume Lifetime Achievement Award for Free Speech. She is the author of HATE: Why We Should Resist It with Free Speech\, Not Censorship (2018) and Free Speech: What Everyone Needs to Know (due out October\, 2023). SUMMARY:Storytelling Series // 'Delivered Under Fire'
DESCRIPTION:Candice Shy Hooper shares her newest book Delivered Under Fire. Follow the General Grant’s Post Master Absalom Markland during the American Civil War as he developed the military mail service still in use today. Markland’s innovative system facilitated the exchange of millions of priceless letters between soldiers on the front lines and their families at home. \n\nTickets:  Members – $10 // General Admission – $15 \nTo purchase\, click here or call 843.723.9912 during Box Office Hours (11:00AM–4:00PM\, Monday through Thursday). \nAbout the Book:\nDelivered Under Fire: Absalom Markland and Freedom’s Mail tells the story of the resourceful and courageous Kentuckian who created the military mail service during the Civil War that delivered millions of priceless letters for soldiers and their families and bolstered morale throughout the North. As Special Agent of the US Post Office Department\, Markland visited with Lincoln once a month during the war.  A childhood friend of Ulysses Grant\, Markland served with him throughout the war\, and during his Presidency played a crucial role in Grant’s battle against the Ku Klux Klan. Nationally famous during his life\, this American hero is all but forgotten today.  Markland\, who briefly served as Charleston’s Postmaster\, was not the only Absalom involved in the mail service during the Civil War. Candice’s book also tells the story of Absalom Grimes\, the Confederacy’s most famous “mail runner\,” or smuggler\, who was twice imprisoned as a spy and twice escaped.  \n\nAbout the Author:\nAfter a career in communication\, politics\, and the law in Washington DC\, Candice Shy Hooper’s interest in military history led her to George Washington University in 2006 to get a masters degree. She is the author of Lincoln’s Generals’ Wives: Four Women Who Influenced the Civil War for Better and for Worse\, which won three national awards. Her historical work has appeared in The New York Times and the Journal for Military History\, and to Candice’s amazement\, her poems have appeared in prominent literary journals and one even won a prize.

SUMMARY:Story Time In The Rabbit Hole - Cindy Andrews and her debut book Engel
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special appearance during our beloved weekly Story Time in the Rabbit Hole!  Local author and illustrator Cindy Andrews will be our guest to share her latest book\, Engel\, that releases this week\, just in time for the holidays. \nDuring this hour long\, kid-friendly program\, children and their parents/caregivers will hear excerpts and highlights from the new book along with a hand-folded paper holiday craft!  Following the program\, attendees will be invited upstairs to the Charleston Library Society Holiday Bazaar where Cindy will be signing and personalizing individual copies for sale through Buxton Books. \n About Engel: \nIt’s 1882 in the Holy City of Charleston\, where a beloved handmade Christmas angel named Engel has been safely stored year after year in the attic of the prominent Witte family. When a modern factory-made angel with feathered wings assumes her role at the top of the tree\, Engel fears irrelevance and makes a wish for real wings. Through an ironic twist of fate\, the little ornament is unwittingly discarded into Charleston harbor. During her year-long journey home\, Engel encounters a delightful and sometimes terrifying cast of Lowcountry wildlife creatures inspired by local historical figures. Mentored by the likes of Francis Marion\, Eliza Pinckney\, and Quash Stevens\, the little angel will learn to survive “according to nature” by identifying her strengths and eliminating her fears with empathy and courage. But it will take trying to save a nest of baby sea turtles during a hurricane for Engel to find her higher purpose and reveal the secret of the wings. \nAbout the author: \nCindy Andrews has lived in Charleston for over thirty years. She recently retired from Ashley Hall\, where she taught visual art\, art history\, European history\, and graphic design. As a lover of all things historical\, Cindy also loves to cook\, kayak the local waterways\, golf at the muni\, and visit her grandchildren in Mexico City. \nRSVP to this free event is required\, please fill out the form below to do so.

SUMMARY:Charleston Library Society Book Club ~ David Grann's "The Wager"
DESCRIPTION:CLS Book Club is FREE\, in-person\, and open to the public—whether you’ve finished the book\, are thinking about starting it\, or couldn’t make it past the half-way point. All that is required is an RSVP via the form below. \nOffered a few times a year\, the CLS Book Club seeks to explore a wide range of topics\, authors and diversity within its book selections. Under this objective\, the Book Club also offers space for conversation\, perspectives and discourse. \nAbout the book:\nThe Wager is a grand tale of human behavior at the extremes told by one of our greatest nonfiction writers. Grann’s recreation of the hidden world on a British warship rivals the work of Patrick O’Brian\, his portrayal of the castaways’ desperate straits stands up to the classics of survival writing such as The Endurance\, and his account of the court martial has the savvy of a Scott Turow thriller. As always with Grann’s work\, the incredible twists of the narrative hold the reader spellbound. \nFor a copy of the book\, check out our catalog here\, or shop local at Buxton Books.

Her new release\, Old Crimes\, explores the stories of different characters that treasure their secrets\, and have to deal with the consequences. McCorkle weaves the tales of multiple characters\, and allows the reader to feel at home in the chaos secrets can cause. \nSecure your seat for this exclusive opportunity to share an audience with this bestselling author.  \nTickets*: PURCHASE HERE \n$35 – Members or $40 – General Admission // 1 Ticket and 1 signed copy of Old Crimes \n$45 – Limited Option // 2 Tickets and 1 signed copy of Old Crimes* \n*There will be a limited number of two for one tickets available\, these tickets include two attendees and one signed copy of Old Crimes.  \nNOTE: If you are unable to attend the program\, and wish to secure a signed copy (or copies!)\, pre-order through the following link: Old Crimes or call Buxton Books at (843) 723-1670. \nABOUT THE BOOK \nOld Crimes delves into the lives of characters who hold their secrets and misdeeds close\, even as the past continues to reverberate over time and across generations. And despite the characters’ yearnings for connection\, they can’t seem to tell the whole truth. In “Low Tones\,” a woman uses her hearing impairment as a way to guard herself from her husband’s commentary. In “Lineman\,” a telephone lineman strains to connect to his family even as he feels pushed aside in a digital world. In “Confessional\,” a young couple buys a confessional booth for fun\, only to discover the cost of honesty. \nProfoundly moving and unforgettable\, for fans of Alice Munro\, Elizabeth Strout\, and Lily King\, the stories in Old Crimes reveal why McCorkle has long been considered a master of the form\, probing lives full of great intensity\, longing and affection\, and deep regret. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nJill McCorkle has the distinction of having published her first two novels on the same day in 1984.  Of these novels\, the New York Times Book Review said: “one suspects the author of The Cheer Leader is a born novelist.  With July 7th\, she is also a full grown one.” Since then she has published five other novels—most recently\, Hieroglyphics—and four collections of short stories. Five of her books have been named New York Times notable books and four of her stories have appeared in Best American Short Stories.  McCorkle has received the New England Booksellers Award\, the John Dos Passos Prize for Excellence in Literature\, the North Carolina Award for Literature and the Thomas Wolfe Prize; she was recently inducted into the NC Literary Hall of Fame. McCorkle has taught at Harvard\, Brandeis\, and NC State where she remains affiliated with the MFA Program in creative writing and she is core faculty in the Bennington Writing Seminars.
