SUMMARY:Book Tour Exclusive: Mary Beard's Profile of an Emperor—New Insights into Ancient Rome
DESCRIPTION:Join CLS and Buxton Books on Wednesday\, November 1\, for an evening with Mary Beard\, a literary legend dubbed “the world’s most famous classicist” by the Guardian\, in celebration of the release of her forthcoming book\, Emperor of Rome: Ruling the Ancient Roman World\, due out in October. During this exciting Book Tour Event\, Beard will discuss her sweeping account of the social and political world of the Roman emperors in rare and intimate detail—exploring (and exploding) themes of identity and big-picture narrative at the heart of ancient Rome’s enduring legacy. \nTicket prices\, which are publisher-directed\, are $50 for Members\, $55 for the General Admission  \nTickets include one (1) copy of the book per order. \nThere are a limited number of special offer ticket pairs priced at $65\, available to Members\, which include two (2) tickets and one (1) book.  \nFor more info and to purchase tickets\, please click here. \nIf you are unable to attend the event\, but would like to reserve one or more signed copies\, please purchase here. \nAbout the Book \nIn her international bestseller SPQR\, Mary Beard told the thousand-year story of ancient Rome. Now she shines her spotlight on the emperors who ruled the Roman empire\, from Julius Caesar (assassinated 44 BCE) to Alexander Severus (assassinated 235 CE). Emperor of Rome is not your usual chronological account of Roman rulers\, one after another: the mad Caligula\, the monster Nero\, the philosopher Marcus Aurelius. Beard asks bigger questions: What power did emperors actually have? Was the Roman palace really so bloodstained? She tracks down the emperor at home\, at the races\, on his travels\, even on his way to heaven. She introduces his wives and lovers\, rivals and slaves\, court jesters and soldiers—and the ordinary people who pressed begging letters into his hands. Emperor of Rome goes directly to the heart of Roman (and our own) fantasies about what it was to be Roman\, offering an account of Roman history as it has never been presented before. \nAbout the Author \nMary Beard is the author of the best-selling The Fires of Vesuvius and the National Book Critics Circle Award–nominated Confronting the Classics and SPQR. A popular blogger and television personality\, Beard is a regular contributor to the New York Review of Books. She lives in England.

SUMMARY:Storytelling Series // Judge Richard Gergel Hosts Harvard Constitutional Law Authority Randall Kennedy
DESCRIPTION:Don’t miss this rare audience with two of the country’s leading legal figures. On Thursday\, November 2\, Judge Richard Gergel will host the distinguished Harvard Law School professor and constitutional law scholar Randall Kennedy to discuss an important\, yet little-known South Carolinian\, whose remarkable life offers a unique perspective on the state’s history since World War II. \nThe story of Dr. Thaddeus Bell is a gripping account with enduring resonance—and one that only Professor Kennedy\, given his family connections to Dr. Bell\, as well as his experience clerking for Justice Thurgood Marshall\, can tell. \nThis promises to be an intimate and illustrative conversation about the ways in which\, despite confronting manifold racial wrongs\, so many people from all backgrounds persevered to live bountiful lives worthy of memorialization and awareness. \nAlong with the Princeton Club of Charleston\, we invite you to take part in this very special evening on Thursday\, November 2\, from 6:00pm–7:00pm. \nClick here or call 843.723.9912 during box office hours (Monday–Thursday\, 11:00AM to 4:00PM) to purchase tickets. \nAbout Randall Kennedy \nRandall Kennedy is Michael R. Klein Professor at Harvard Law School where he teaches courses on contracts\, criminal law\, and the regulation of race relations. He was born in Columbia\, South Carolina. For his education he attended St. Albans School\, Princeton University\, Oxford University\, and Yale Law School. He served as a law clerk for Judge J. Skelly Wright of the United States Court of Appeals and for Justice Thurgood Marshall of the United States Supreme Court. He is a member of the bar of the District of Columbia and the Supreme Court of the United States. Awarded the 1998 Robert F. Kennedy Book Award for Race\, Crime\, and the Law\, Mr Kennedy writes for a wide range of scholarly and general interest publications. His other books are For Discrimination: Race\, Affirmative Action\, and the Law (2013)\, The Persistence of the Color Line: Racial Politics and the Obama Presidency (2011)\, Sellout: The Politics of Racial Betrayal (2008)\, Interracial Intimacies: Sex\, Marriage\, Identity\, and Adoption (2003)\, and Nigger: The Strange Career of a Troublesome Word (2002). A member of the American Law Institute\, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences\, and the American Philosophical Association\, Mr. Kennedy is also a Trustee emeritus of Princeton University. \nAbout Judge Richard Gergel \nRichard Gergel is a United States district judge who presides in the same courthouse in Charleston\, where Judge Waties Waring once served. Waring is one of the central figures of Gergel’s book\, “Unexampled Courage: The Blinding of Sgt. Isaac Woodard and the Awakening of President Harry S. Truman and Judge J. Waties Waring” (Sarah Crichton). With his wife\, Dr. Belinda Gergel\, he also wrote In Pursuit of the Tree of Life: A History of the Early Jews of Columbia\, South Carolina. A native of Columbia\, South Carolina\, Judge Gergel earned undergraduate and law degrees from Duke University. \nAbout Dr. Thaddeus Bell \nDr. Thaddeus Bell earned an undergraduate degree at South Carolina State College and a medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina. According to Professor Kennedy\, he has been involved in a number of interesting ventures: Dr. Bell served as a ranger at Yellowstone National Park; attempted a professional football career via several unsuccessful try-outs for the Washington Redskins; was an elite runner who\, at the age of 50\, became the world champion in his age group (he also held the world record for the 100-meter dash); has been active in his churches\, his fraternity\, and in public education concerning medical affairs through radio broadcasts called “Closing the Gap;” and created (and continues to host) a summertime jazz festival in Charleston. \nAbout the Princeton Club of Charleston \nThe Princeton Club of Charleston is comprised of Princeton University alumni/ae\, family\, and faculty residing in the Charleston area.

SUMMARY:Fellows Exclusive: CLS Wine Club
DESCRIPTION:On November 15th from 6:00–7:30PM\, we will host our second Wine Club. \nThis fun idea bloomed down in the Fellows Lounge this winter during one of our lively Fellow Happy Hours. Our gracious hosts—each hailing from storied outings and clubs centered around the complexities of wine—have agreed to share wit and wisdom twice a year. Special thanks to Jerry Mitchell\, who we have named the “Wine Intellect\,” and Tim Cantopher\, who shares knowledge as “Taste Master.” \nIn addition\, we have partnered with the renowned experts at Zero George for this special evening of tasting and access to unique vineyards and small-production varietals. \nSeating is limited in an effort to host a conversation style wine tasting where the experts will walk us through four specifically chosen bottles and dissect the nuance associated with each. \nPart of participating in the wine club is the opportunity to purchase wines that would otherwise not be available at retail. Because these wines are available in such limited quantities to start with\, we must secure them ahead of time\, therefore your ticket will include one of each bottle to take home (Avg $35/bottle)\, as part of the overall ticket price. Each ticket includes your attendance to the event in addition to the four bottles. \nProceeds from the evening will benefit the Charleston Library Society’s ongoing programing efforts. \nThere are two ticket options available: \n*Single $285 // $145 ticket price + $140 wine price (4 bottles to take home) \n*Couple $430 // $290 ticket price + $140 wine price (4 bottles to take home) \nCurrent Fellows may purchase tickets here.

SUMMARY:Revisiting origins of Bardolatry with Renowned Authority Dr. Earle Havens
DESCRIPTION:When we hear the term ‘The Bard’ our minds immediately spring to the name William Shakespeare. More specifically\, Shakespeare is known as ‘The Bard of Avon’. This is because he seems to have been given the title in recognition of his stature as ‘great poet’ and the unofficial national poet of England. \n “After God\, Shakespeare has created the most.” – Alexandre Dumas\, 1859 \nShakespeare is ubiquitous today… but was it ever thus? How\, when\, and why did he become apotheosized within the global canon of literature? How did his memory and legacy become venerated\, in some cases almost to the level of idolatry? This talk explores many of the questions that have swirled around the immensely popular\, often sensational\, and occasionally vulgar phenomenon of “Bardolatry”—a term cynically coined by the playwright and critic George Bernard Shaw in the hope of knocking Shakespeare off the proverbial pedestal of the English literary canon. \nTickets:  Members – $10 // General Admission – $15 \nTo purchase tickets\, click here or call 843-723-9912 during box office hours. \nAbout the Author: \nDr. Earle Havens is Director of the Virginia Fox Stern Center for the History of the Book in the Renaissance\, and Nancy H. Hall Curator of Rare Books & Manuscripts\, at Johns Hopkins University. His numerous publications explore the material culture of books and scribal activity during the early modern period\, including illicit printing and book smuggling\, literary forgery\, the history of libraries\, and the role of women in print culture. \nDr. Havens earned an interdisciplinary joint-PhD in Renaissance Studies and History from Yale University with a dissertation exploring the underground print culture of the Counter-Reformation during the second half of the sixteenth century\, in England and on the European continent. His academic teaching and published scholarship focus on the history of the book and material texts in early modern Europe\, ca. 1400-1750. \nHe has authored\, co-authored\, and edited twelve scholarly books and exhibition catalogues\, and several dozen articles and book chapters exploring the material culture of books and scribal activity during the early modern period\, including illicit printing and book smuggling\, literary forgery\, the history of libraries\, and the role of women in print culture. \nIn addition he has served as Curator and co-Curator of a dozen major rare book exhibitions in the US and Europe\, and has lectured widely on the history of the book\, most recently at the Herzog August Library\, Wolfenbüttel\, Durham University\, the University of Trento\, the Autonomous University of Barcelona\, and the University of Gothenburg. His scholarly research has been supported most recently by rare book research fellowships from the Houghton\, Huntington\, and Clark Libraries. In 2019\, he was a Member of the School of Historical Studies at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton\, and in 2021 was a Visiting Fellow at All Souls College\, Oxford.

SUMMARY:Book Tour Exclusive // A Friday with Mitch Albom
DESCRIPTION:Though Friday programs are a rare occurrence at the Library Society\, the launch of Mitch Albom’s newest book is more than enough reason to open up the day to an event. \nOn November 17\, from 6:00PM-7:00PM\, CLS and Buxton Books presents the Tuesdays with Morrie author who will spend an evening discussing the themes that drive his latest novel. \nSecure your seat for this exclusive pub-week audience with the international bestselling author \nTickets: $40 – Members // $45 – General Admission \nTickets include 1 signed copy of The Little Liar \nPURCHASE HERE. \n*If you are unable to attend\, please pre-order your copy before they sell out here! \nABOUT THE BOOK \nNew York Times bestselling writer Mitch Albom is a magical storyteller who imbues hope into universal tales of our human imperfections and eternal search for meaning. His books transcend borders and cultural boundaries\, selling more than 40 million copies worldwide in forty-eight languages. His classic Tuesdays with Morrie is the bestselling memoir of all time which topped the list for four straight years and celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2022. “Think of Mitch Albom as the Babe Ruth of popular literature\,” Time magazine has said\, “hitting the ball out of the park every time he’s at bat.” \nIn his powerful new novel\, The Little Liar\, due out November 14\, Albom turns for the first time to one of the darkest chapters in human history—the Holocaust. A fable-like adventure that travels from Greece under Nazi occupation to America after the war\, it intertwines the lives of three children who were victims of the war’s deceptions as they confront both revenge and devotion\, and ultimately seek the grace of redemption. Narrated by the voice of Truth itself\, this singular and timeless story finds the power of love amidst the darkest of realities. \nYoung Nico Krispis\, who has never told a lie\, is tricked by a German officer who promises him that Nico’s family will be saved if he can do one small task: convince the Jewish residents of his town to board the trains that will transport them to “safety.” Day after day\, the eleven-year-old unknowingly plays his part in the evacuation —until the final day when he is betrayed\, and his own family is loaded into the boxcar headed to Auschwitz. Nico\, forced to stay behind\, loses the ability to speak the truth ever again. After the war\, his brother Sebastian and their schoolmate Fannie\, who have miraculously survived the concentration camps and death marches\, begin their search for Nico\, who has become a pathological liar. All three continue to be shadowed by the Nazi officer who forever altered their lives. As the decades pass\, the consequences of what each of them said and did unfold\, and we learn the price we pay for the lies we tell and the secrets we hide\, the ending of “The Little Liar” is as stunning and thought-provoking as anything Albom has ever written. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nMitch Albom\, a “writer with soul” (Los Angeles Times)\, is an author\, screenwriter\, playwright and nationally syndicated columnist. Four of his books\, including Morrie\, The Five People You Meet in Heaven\, For One More Day\, and Have a Little Faith\, have been made into highly acclaimed television movies for ABC. Albom has founded nine charities in and around Detroit\, including the first ever 24-hour medical clinic for homeless children in America\, and also operates an orphanage in Port-Au-Prince\, Haiti\, which he visits every month without exception. He lives with his wife\, Janine\, in Detroit. \nThe Little Liar extends Albom’s estimable storytelling gifts as it underscores the themes of humanity and grace that have defined his work. I hope you will plan prominent review and feature coverage\, and I look forward to talking with you about the possibilities.

SUMMARY:Speaker Series // Let's Talk: Rethinking Communication Culture for the Modern Era

SUMMARY:Storytelling Series // 'Delivered Under Fire'
DESCRIPTION:Candice Shy Hooper shares her newest book Delivered Under Fire. Follow the General Grant’s Post Master Absalom Markland during the American Civil War as he developed the military mail service still in use today. Markland’s innovative system facilitated the exchange of millions of priceless letters between soldiers on the front lines and their families at home. \n\nTickets:  Members – $10 // General Admission – $15 \nTo purchase\, click here or call 843.723.9912 during Box Office Hours (11:00AM–4:00PM\, Monday through Thursday). \nAbout the Book:\nDelivered Under Fire: Absalom Markland and Freedom’s Mail tells the story of the resourceful and courageous Kentuckian who created the military mail service during the Civil War that delivered millions of priceless letters for soldiers and their families and bolstered morale throughout the North. As Special Agent of the US Post Office Department\, Markland visited with Lincoln once a month during the war.  A childhood friend of Ulysses Grant\, Markland served with him throughout the war\, and during his Presidency played a crucial role in Grant’s battle against the Ku Klux Klan. Nationally famous during his life\, this American hero is all but forgotten today.  Markland\, who briefly served as Charleston’s Postmaster\, was not the only Absalom involved in the mail service during the Civil War. Candice’s book also tells the story of Absalom Grimes\, the Confederacy’s most famous “mail runner\,” or smuggler\, who was twice imprisoned as a spy and twice escaped.  \n\nAbout the Author:\nAfter a career in communication\, politics\, and the law in Washington DC\, Candice Shy Hooper’s interest in military history led her to George Washington University in 2006 to get a masters degree. SUMMARY:Story Time In The Rabbit Hole - Cindy Andrews and her debut book Engel
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special appearance during our beloved weekly Story Time in the Rabbit Hole!  Local author and illustrator Cindy Andrews will be our guest to share her latest book\, Engel\, that releases this week\, just in time for the holidays. \nDuring this hour long\, kid-friendly program\, children and their parents/caregivers will hear excerpts and highlights from the new book along with a hand-folded paper holiday craft!  Following the program\, attendees will be invited upstairs to the Charleston Library Society Holiday Bazaar where Cindy will be signing and personalizing individual copies for sale through Buxton Books. \n About Engel: \nIt’s 1882 in the Holy City of Charleston\, where a beloved handmade Christmas angel named Engel has been safely stored year after year in the attic of the prominent Witte family. When a modern factory-made angel with feathered wings assumes her role at the top of the tree\, Engel fears irrelevance and makes a wish for real wings. Through an ironic twist of fate\, the little ornament is unwittingly discarded into Charleston harbor. During her year-long journey home\, Engel encounters a delightful and sometimes terrifying cast of Lowcountry wildlife creatures inspired by local historical figures. Mentored by the likes of Francis Marion\, Eliza Pinckney\, and Quash Stevens\, the little angel will learn to survive “according to nature” by identifying her strengths and eliminating her fears with empathy and courage. But it will take trying to save a nest of baby sea turtles during a hurricane for Engel to find her higher purpose and reveal the secret of the wings. \nAbout the author: \nCindy Andrews has lived in Charleston for over thirty years. She recently retired from Ashley Hall\, where she taught visual art\, art history\, European history\, and graphic design. As a lover of all things historical\, Cindy also loves to cook\, kayak the local waterways\, golf at the muni\, and visit her grandchildren in Mexico City. \nRSVP to this free event is required\, please fill out the form below to do so.
