SUMMARY:Speaker Series: Sleeping with the Ancestors
DESCRIPTION:Joseph M. McGill\, Jr.\, started his Slave Dwelling Project in 2010 to draw attention to the oft-obscured and distorted experiences of formerly enslaved people. Since then\, he has hosted overnight stays in what were once slave quarters on properties throughout the South\, North\, and West. \nDuring this upcoming discussion\, Mr. McGill will discuss his recent book on the subject\, Sleeping with the Ancestors\, along with his co-author\, the journalist Herb Frazier. \nJoin us on June 13\, at 6:00PM Tickets are $10 for members\, $15 for guests. \nTo RSVP\, click here or call 843-579-9922\, to secure your seat. \nAbout the Book: \nIn this enlightening personal account\, one man tells the story of his groundbreaking project to sleep overnight in former slave dwellings that still stand across the country—revealing the fascinating history behind these sites and shedding light on larger issues of race in America. \nJoseph McGill Jr.\, a historic preservationist and Civil War reenactor\, founded the Slave Dwelling Project in 2010 based on an idea that was sparked and first developed in 1999. Since founding the project\, McGill has been touring the country\, spending the night in former slave dwellings—throughout the South\, but also the North and the West\, where people are often surprised to learn that such structures exist. Events and gatherings are arranged around these overnight stays\, and it provides a unique way to understand the often otherwise obscured and distorted history of slavery. The project has inspired difficult conversations about race in communities from South Carolina to Alabama to Texas to Minnesota to New York\, and all over the United States. \nSleeping with the Ancestors focuses on all of the key sites McGill has visited in his ongoing project and digs deeper into the actual history of each location\, using McGill’s own experience and conversations with the community to enhance those original stories. Altogether\, McGill and coauthor Herb Frazier give readers an important unexpected emersion into the history of slavery\, and especially the obscured and ignored aspects of that history.

SUMMARY:Speaker Series: A Renaissance Mystery Decoded
DESCRIPTION:A brutal murder\, a nefarious plot\, a coded letter. After five hundred years\, the most notorious mystery of the Renaissance is finally solved.  \nOn June 22\, at 6:00 PM\, we are thrilled to host the esteemed scholar and author\, Marcello Simonetta\, to discuss how he unraveled a centuries-old conspiracy to reveal the man and machinations behind the drama. \nTickets are $10 for members\, $15 for guests. Click here\, or call 843.579.9922\, to reserve your seats today. \nBox office hours close at 3PM on the day of the event\, but you may also purchase tickets at the door if/while they are available. \nSpecial thanks to our friends at the Dante Alighieri Society for their collaboration on this incredible program. \nAbout the Book \nThe Italian Renaissance is remembered as much for intrigue as it is for art\, with papal politics and infighting among Italy’s many city-states providing the grist for Machiavelli’s classic work on take-no-prisoners politics\, The Prince. The attempted assassination of the Medici brothers in the Duomo in Florence in 1478 is one of the best-known examples of the machinations endemic to the age. While the assailants were the Medici’s rivals\, the Pazzi family\, questions have always lingered about who really orchestrated the attack. \nMore than five hundred years later\, while working in a private archive in Italy\, the Renaissance scholar Marcello Simonetta stumbled upon a coded letter written by Federico da Montefeltro\, the Duke of Urbino\, to Pope Sixtus IV. Using a codebook written by his own ancestor to crack the letter’s secrets\, Mr. Simonetta unearthed proof of an all-out power grab by papal authorities for control of Florence. Montefeltro\, long believed to be a close friend of Lorenzo de Medici\, was in fact conspiring with the Pope to unseat the Medici and put the more malleable Pazzi in their place. \n\nIn The Montefeltro Conspiracy\, Simonetta unravels this plot\, showing not only how the plot came together but how its failure—only one of the Medici brothers\, Giuliano\, was killed; Lorenzo survived—changed the course of Italian and papal history for generations. In the course of his gripping narrative\, we encounter the period’s most colorful characters\, relive its tumultuous politics\, and discover that two famous paintings\, including one in the Sistine Chapel\, contain the Medici’s astounding revenge. \nAbout the Author \nMarcello Simonetta earned his laurea at Sapienza in Rome and his Ph.D. at Yale University. He has authored several books\, including his Medici trilogy: The Montefeltro Conspiracy (Doubleday\, New York: 2007\, translated in ten languages); Volpi e Leoni\, I Medici\, Machiavelli e la rovina d’Italia (Bompiani\, Milan: 2014\, translated in 4 languages); and Caterina de’ Medici. Storia segreta di una faida famigliare (Rizzoli\, Milan: 2018\, translated in four languages). Mr. Simonetta is currently a Senior Scholar at The Medici Archive Project in Florence\, and also teaches at New York University and Syracuse–Florence.

SUMMARY:Book Tour Exclusive: A Celebration of First Ladies
DESCRIPTION:Join CLS and Buxton Books on Thursday\, June 29\, for a publication week author talk with Marie Benedict and Victoria Christopher Murray on their new book\, The First Ladies!  \nAfter the success of their first title together\, The Personal Librarian\, we could not be more excited for this new release. \nThe evening will begin at 6:00 pm as the duo discusses the writing of the book\, the often unrecognized contributions of women throughout history\, and the partnership between Eleanor Roosevelt and one of the most notable historical figures to come out of South Carolina – namely Mary McLeod Bethune. After the event\, Marie and Victoria will hang around to answer your questions and sign and personalize books! \nTickets are available for 1 Person\, 1 Book or as a 2 People\, 1 Book package. Both ticket options include a signed hardcover copy of The First Ladies. \nFind out more and purchase tickets here! \nAbout The First Ladies: \nA novel about the extraordinary partnership between First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and civil rights activist Mary McLeod Bethune—an unlikely friendship that changed the world\, from the New York Times bestselling authors of the Good Morning America Book Club pick The Personal Librarian. \nThe daughter of formerly enslaved parents\, Mary McLeod Bethune refuses to back down as white supremacists attempt to thwart her work. She marches on as an activist and an educator\, and as her reputation grows she becomes a celebrity\, revered by titans of business and recognized by U.S. Presidents. Eleanor Roosevelt herself is awestruck and eager to make her acquaintance. Initially drawn together because of their shared belief in women’s rights and the power of education\, Mary and Eleanor become fast friends confiding their secrets\, hopes and dreams—and holding each other’s hands through personal and professional strife. \nWhen Franklin Delano Roosevelt is elected president\, the two women begin to collaborate more closely\, particularly as Eleanor moves toward her own agenda separate from FDR\, a consequence of the devastating discovery of her husband’s secret love affair. Eleanor becomes a controversial First Lady for her outspokenness\, particularly on civil rights. And when she receives threats because of her strong ties to Mary\, it only fuels the women’s desire to fight together for justice and equality. \nThis is the story of two different\, yet equally formidable\, passionate\, and committed women\, and the way in which their singular friendship helped form the foundation for the modern civil rights movement. \nAbout Marie Benedict: \nMarie Benedict is a lawyer with more than ten years’ experience as a litigator at two of the country’s premier law firms\, who found her calling unearthing the hidden historical stories of women. Her mission is to excavate from the past the most important\, complex and fascinating women of history and bring them into the light of present-day where we can finally perceive the breadth of their contributions as well as the insights they bring to modern day issues. She embarked on a new\, thematically connected series of historical novels with The Other Einstein\, which tells the tale of Albert Einstein’s first wife\, a physicist herself\, and the role she might have played in his theories. The next novel in this series is the USA Today bestselling Carnegie’s Maid — which released in January of 2018 — and the book that followed is the New York Times bestseller and Barnes & Noble Book Club Pick The Only Woman in the Room\, the story of the brilliant inventor Hedy Lamarr\, which published in January of 2019. In January of 2020\, Lady Clementine\, the story of the incredible Clementine Churchill\, was released\, and became an international bestseller. Her next novel\, the Instant NYTimes and USAToday bestselling The Mystery of Mrs. Christie\, was published on December 29\, 2020\, and her first co-written book with the talented Victoria Christopher Murray\, the instant NYTimes bestseller and Good Morning America Book Club Pick The Personal Liberian\, was released on June 29\, 2021. Her latest novel\, Her Hidden Genius\, about the brilliant British scientist Rosalind Franklin who discovered the structure of DNA but whose research was used without her permission by Crick and Watson to win the Nobel Prize. And\, in January of 2023\, she will release The Mitford Affair\, which explores the role that history’s most notorious sisters — the beautiful\, brilliant\, eccentric Mitfords — played in the rise of World War II\, both for and against the Nazis. Writing as Heather Terrell\, Marie also published the historical novels The Chrysalis\, The Map Thief\, and Brigid of Kildare. Marie’s novels have been translated into twenty-nine languages. \nAbout Victoria Christopher Murray: \nA native of Queens\, Victoria earned a B.A. in Communication Disorders from Hampton University and an MBA from New York University.  Victoria spent ten years in Corporate America before launching her entrepreneurial venture\, a Financial Services Agency for Aegon\, USA where she managed the number one division for nine consecutive years. \nDubbed a Christian Fiction writer because no one else was writing about religious topics\, Victoria trailblazed the literary scene penning more than 30 novels\, co-writing with other authors\, and ghostwriting for top talent across the country. \nVictoria lives in Washington\, D.C. She is a jogger\, doting grandmother\, and a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority\, Inc. \nThis is a ticketed event. To purchase your tickets\, please click here!

SUMMARY:Book Tour Exclusive: Ann Napolitano Brings Her Oprah-blessed Book to CLS
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday July 19th\, in collaboration with Buxton Books\, we will be welcoming the acclaimed author Ann Napolitano\, to discuss her latest book\, Hello Beautiful. The March release—an aching tribute to Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women—has garnered wide acclaim since it first dropped\, landing on the map of popular literary history by becoming the 100th selection for Oprah’s Book Club. \nTicket prices are as follows. But first\, a general note: At the author’s request\, masks will be required at this event. We will have plenty on hand for your convenience. \nSingle Ticket Pricing (includes one (1) book): $35 Members\, $40 Public \nTwo Tickets (includes one (1) book): $45 \nTo purchase tickets\, click here or call 843-723-9912 during box office hours. \nIf you are unable to attend the event\, but would like to reserve one or more signed copies\, please visit Buxton Books online here. Buxton also offers special rates for orders of 10 or more books—perfect for Book Clubs (and readers looking to get a jump on holiday shopping!).  \nAbout the Book \nWilliam Waters grew up in a house silenced by tragedy\, where his parents could hardly bear to look at him\, much less love him—so when he meets the spirited and ambitious Julia Padavano in his freshman year of college\, it’s as if the world has lit up around him. With Julia comes her family\, as she and her three sisters are inseparable: Sylvie\, the family’s dreamer\, is happiest with her nose in a book; Cecelia is a free-spirited artist; and Emeline patiently takes care of them all. With the Padavanos\, William experiences a newfound contentment; every moment in their house is filled with loving chaos. \nBut then darkness from William’s past surfaces\, jeopardizing not only Julia’s carefully orchestrated plans for their future\, but the sisters’ unshakeable devotion to one another. The result is a catastrophic family rift that changes their lives for generations. Will the loyalty that once rooted them be strong enough to draw them back together when it matters most? \nAn exquisite homage to Louisa May Alcott’s timeless classic\, Little Women\, Hello Beautiful is a profoundly moving portrait of what is possible when we choose to love someone not in spite of who they are\, but because of it.

SUMMARY:Book Tour Exclusive: Daniel Silva
DESCRIPTION:Join us in welcoming the New York Times–bestselling author Daniel Silva on the heels of the publication of his newest book\, The Collector. Fit with conspiracies\, luxury\, and the threat of nuclear disaster\, this blockbuster makes for an evening program not to miss! \nMember Tickets: $45 (Book Included!) \nGuest Tickets: $50 (Book Included!) \nThis event is sold out. Please call 843.723.9912 to be added to the waitlist. \nAbout the Book: \nIn this new thriller from #1 New York Times–bestselling author Daniel Silva\, Gabriel Allon undertakes a search for a stolen Vermeer masterpiece and uncovers a conspiracy that could bring the world to the brink of nuclear Armageddon. \nOn the morning after the Venice Preservation Society’s annual black-tie gala\, art restorer and legendary spy Gabriel Allon enters his favorite coffee bar on the island of Murano to find General Cesare Ferrari\, the commander of the Art Squad\, eagerly awaiting his arrival. The Carabinieri have made a startling discovery in the Amalfi villa of a murdered South African shipping tycoon—a secret vault containing an empty frame and stretcher matching the dimensions of the world’s most valuable missing painting. General Ferrari asks Gabriel to quietly track down the artwork before the trail goes cold. \n“Isn’t that your job?” \n“Finding stolen paintings? Technically speaking\, yes. But you’re much better at it than we are.” \nThe painting in question is The Concert by Johannes Vermeer\, one of thirteen works of art stolen from Boston’s Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in 1990. With the help of a most unlikely ally\, a beautiful Danish computer hacker and professional thief\, Gabriel soon discovers that the painting has changed hands as part of an illicit billion-dollar business deal involving a man code-named the Collector\, an energy executive with close ties to the highest levels of Russian power. \nThe missing masterpiece is the lynchpin of a conspiracy that if successful\, could plunge the world into a conflict of apocalyptic proportions. To foil the plot\, Gabriel must carry out a daring heist of his own\, with millions of lives hanging in the balance. \nElegant\, meticulously plotted\, and filled with a cast of unforgettable characters\, The Collector moves swiftly from the graceful canals of Venice to the windswept coast of northern Denmark to CIA headquarters in Langley\, Virginia—and\, finally\, to a heart-pounding climax in Russia as current as tomorrow’s headlines. \nThis extraordinary novel—wildly entertaining\, deeply illuminative\, with flashes of wry humor—demonstrates why Daniel Silva is the unrivaled master of international intrigue and suspense\, and “quite simply the best” (Kansas City Star).

We’ll unpack some of the story’s core themes\, including the lessons and legacies we pass on to our children\, and how any of us can survive a broken world with our hearts intact. \nCLS Book Club is FREE\, in-person\, open to the public—whether you’ve finished the book\, are thinking about starting it\, or couldn’t make it past the half-way point. All that is required is an RSVP via the form below.  \nFor a copy of the book\, check out our catalog here\, or shop local at Buxton Books. \nAbout CLS Book Club\nThe CLS Book Club has become a space for conversations about wide ranging topics\, but such a book\, so directly connected to a library’s mission\, has never been chosen. We hope that this book will provide an opportunity to discuss banned books\, freedom of speech\, educational access\, historical importance of librarianship\, and the power that libraries hold in the 21st Century and beyond.
