SUMMARY:CLS Book Club // "Playground" by Richard Powers
DESCRIPTION:CLS Book Club is FREE\, in-person\, and open to the public—and also member-researched and led through thoughtfully curated discussion. Whether you’ve finished the book\, are thinking about starting it\, or couldn’t make it past the halfway point\, please join us. \nRSVP is required via the form below so that we can plan for seating. \nAbout Book Club \nOffered a few times a year\, the CLS Book Club seeks to explore various topics\, authors\, and diversity within its book selections. Under this objective\, Book Club also offers space for conversation\, perspectives\, and discourse to aptly deliver a synopsis on the panorama of characters and and narratives present in Playground. This Book Club will presented and presided over by a dynamic panel consisting of Diana Hambleton\, Clare Meyer\, Tina Wardrop and Susan Porter. After their exploration of the book\, the floor will open to questions and discussion. \nAbout the Book \n\n\n\n\n\nFour lives are drawn together in a sweeping\, panoramic new novel from Richard Powers\, showcasing the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Overstory at the height of his skills. Twelve-year-old Evie Beaulieu sinks to the bottom of a swimming pool in Montreal strapped to one of the world’s first aqualungs. Ina Aroita grows up on naval bases across the Pacific with art as her only home. Two polar opposites at an elite Chicago high school bond over a three-thousand-year-old board game; Rafi Young will get lost in literature\, while Todd Keane’s work will lead to a startling AI breakthrough. \nThey meet on the history-scarred island of Makatea in French Polynesia\, whose deposits of phosphorus once helped to feed the world. Now the tiny atoll has been chosen for humanity’s next adventure: a plan to send floating\, autonomous cities out onto the open sea. But first\, the island’s residents must vote to green light the project or turn the seasteaders away. \nSet in the world’s largest ocean\, this awe-filled book explores that last wild place we have yet to colonize in a still-unfolding oceanic game\, and interweaves beautiful writing\, rich characterization\, profound themes of technology and the environment\, and a deep exploration of our shared humanity in a way only Richard Powers can. \nPlease note that the authors of our selections ARE NOT in attendance.  \n\n\n\n\n\nFor a copy of the book\, check out our catalog here\, or shop local at Buxton Books.

SUMMARY:Marking 50 Years of Breakthrough Writing
DESCRIPTION:Both standouts for their time – fifty years ago\, to be exact – we’re celebrating the continued impact of bestselling books by Peter H. Wood and Theodore Rosengarten that showcased the endurance of enslaved people in early America\, transforming the a widespread understanding of early American history. Black Majority (Peter Wood)\, features a new epilogue in its recently revised fiftieth-anniversary edition that challenges a fresh generation with provocative history. All God’s Dangers (Theodore Rosengarten) may be a “forgotten autobiography” as re-highlighted by The New York Times already once before\, but it was the National Book Award Winner in 1975\, surpassing many others that came out in the same banner year for non-fiction. \nMore relevant and enlightening than ever\, these literary works tell the stories of colonial African American language\, culture\, and expertise – all of which form the critical fibers of our nation’s history. Theodore Rosengarten and Peter H. Wood will reflect on what they have learned since publishing their respective works\, discuss the future of the African American past\, and reveal how their work has shaped their careers as historians and authors. \nIf you are unable to attend the event\, but would like to purchase one or more signed copies\, please visit Buxton Books for copies of Black Majority and All God’s Dangers. \nAbout Peter H. Wood \nPeter H. Wood grew up in St. Louis and Baltimore\, earning degrees at Harvard and Oxford before teaching early American history at Duke University for nearly four decades. In 1974\, Alfred A. Knopf published his dissertation about enslavement in colonial South Carolina. W.W. Norton has recently published an updated 50th-anniversary edition of this pioneering book with the fresh title\, Black Majority: Race\, Rice\, and Rebellion in South Carolina\, 1670-1740. Wood is the author of Strange New Land: Africans in Colonial America and several books about the Black images of American artist Winslow Homer\, including Near Andersonville: Winslow Homer’s Civil War (Harvard University Press\, 2010). He is also the co-author of a widely-used college U.S. History text entitled Created Equal. He has served on the boards of Harvard University\, the Omohundro Institute of Early American History\, and the Highlander Education Center in East Tennessee. Dr. Wood now lives in Colorado with his wife\, Pulitzer-Prize-winning historian\, Elizabeth Fenn. Recently\, he co-authored an essay on slave-built canals in South Carolina before the Stono Rebellion. When not growing gourds\, he is writing a book entitled The Great Southern Blackout\, about the scope and consequences of two centuries of forced Black illiteracy across the South. \nAbout Black Majority \nFirst published in 1974\, Black Majority chronicles the crucial formative years of North America’s wealthiest and most tormented British colony. It explores how West African familiarity with rice determined the Lowcountry economy and how a skilled but enslaved labor force formed its own distinctive language and culture. While African American history often focuses on the nineteenth and twentieth centuries\, Black Majority underscores the significant role early African arrivals played in shaping the direction of American history. \nAbout Theodore Rosengarten \nTheodore Rosengarten is a writer\, teacher and a social activist from McClellanville\, South Carolina. Born in Brooklyn\, New York\, Ted got his AB from Amherst College\, and a PhD in The History of American Civilization\, from Harvard. Even as a child\, he was obsessed by the black struggle for justice and freedom and by the destruction of the Jews in Europe. His first book\, All God’s Dangers: The Life of Nate Shaw\, the oral history of an African American tenant farmer from Alabama\, won the National Book Award. His second book\, Tombee: Portrait of a Cotton Planter\, chronicles the life of an unsuccessful plantation owner from St. Helena Island\, South Carolina. This book won the National Book Critics Circle Award for best biography. Last year\, Yad Vashem Studies published Ted’s critical review of Steven T. Katz’s opus comparing the The Holocaust and New World Slavery. Ted taught for decades in the Jewish Studies Program at the College of Charleston and in the Honors College at the University of South Carolina. Since 2002\, Ted and his wife Dale have led a biennial study abroad to Poland\, Germany and The Netherlands called Tracing the Holocaust. Looking to unearth the past\, they encounter the new racial demography of European cities. \nAbout the All God’s Dangers \nNate Shaw’s father was born under slavery. Nate Shaw was born into a bondage that was only a little gentler. At the age of nine\, he was picking cotton for thirty-five cents an hour. At the age of forty-seven\, he faced down a crowd of white deputies who had come to confiscate a neighbor’s crop. His defiance cost him twelve years in prison. This triumphant autobiography\, assembled from the eighty-four-year-old Shaw’s oral reminiscences\, is the plain-spoken story of an “over-average” man who witnessed wrenching changes in the lives of Southern black people—and whose unassuming courage helped bring those changes about. \nPrior to the program\, We invite our Fellows Members to enjoy a Happy Hour from 5:00 – 6:00pm\, downstairs in the Dr. Suzan D. Boyd Fellows Club Lounge.

SUMMARY:Lite Lunch // Notes from an Admiral's Aide
DESCRIPTION:Lessons from a great leader are always taken to heart by their mentees\, and a select few life-changing lessons are never forgotten – and sometimes shared through compelling and inspiring publications thirty years later. As a Southern boy accustomed to the warmth of the Lowcountry and the tropical tendencies of the Florida Panhandle years later at aviator flight school\, the Bishop England grad was forced to adjust to the much colder temperatures in Maine when he landed the prestigious Admiral’s aide position\, a role so closely entangled with the Admiral that the aide must know and schedule all aspects of the leader’s life. Mark C. Fava\, a retired naval flight officer who once commanded three units as captain and accomplished aviation lawyer.  In his discussion with South Carolina Magistrate Judge Molly Cherry\, Fava will deliver insightful bits for driving leadership qualities forward that he learned from his time with the Admiral\, and share his fun read for all military veterans who cherished their time in uniform. \nIf you are unable to attend the event\, but would like to purchase one or more signed copies\, please visit Buxton Books here. \nAbout the Book \nAs the aide for a navy admiral more than thirty years ago\, Mark C. Fava learned valuable lessons that were formative in his development as a successful and thoughtful leader. Now a vice president at the world’s largest aerospace company and a career aviation lawyer\, Mark is sharing his wisdom in this entertaining and insightful behind-the-scenes look at the successes and failures of a young naval flight officer working every day for the Admiral and how the Admiral reacted as a great leader. \nMark’s stories will inspire you to unlock your leadership potential by applying lessons that will drive your leadership journey forward. An insightful guide for mid-career managers\, early career lawyers\, and junior military officers who aspire to be promoted. The lessons Mark shares have timeless value. They are just as meaningful today as they were over thirty years ago and have been the keys to Mark’s promotions in both the military and the legal profession throughout his career. \nLearning by observing both good and bad leaders is a solid strategy for professional development. The knowledge and insights you gain become part of your leadership fabric\, and the observations shape you into the impactful leader you aspire to be. Putting the knowledge you gain from this book into practice will make you stand out among your peers as a high performer. You will gain an understanding of how executives think and what they appreciate. You will be humble\, organized\, and thoughtful—and you will be identified as an emerging leader. \nAbout the Author \nMark C. Fava is a career aviation lawyer and retired naval flight officer. He is a prolific writer and entertaining speaker. Mark retired from the US Navy as a captain having commanded three units\, including an aviation squadron. He has been a law firm partner and a corporate executive lawyer. He has written numerous articles\, including “What I Learned from the Judge” in the SC Lawyer and “Steering Through a Crisis: Lawyers as Leaders” in The Washington Lawyer. As a law school adjunct professor\, he has also taught aviation law and legal writing. \nMark was the chief operations attorney at Delta Air Lines on 9/11 and spent years in the navy’s P-3 Orion chasing Soviet submarines. He has practiced law for more than thirty years and is currently a vice president at the world’s largest aerospace company. \nHe lives in his hometown of Charleston\, South Carolina\, with his wife and three daughters. When not working\, reading\, or writing\, Mark enjoys life in the low country and appreciates a cold glass of sweet tea in the summer and a good oyster roast in the fall. \nAbout Molly Cherry \nMolly Cherry is a United States Magistrate Judge for the District of South Carolina.  She received a BA degree in Government and Spanish\, magna cum laude\, from Wofford College and her Juris Doctor degree\, cum laude\, from the University of South Carolina School of Law. Judge Cherry is a supporter of the Trident Literacy Association\, having served as chairman of its board\, and is a member of First (Scots) Presbyterian Church\, where she served as a deacon\, elder and Sunday school teacher. \nThe ticket price below includes a boxed lunch for you to enjoy during the program.

We owe this process of discovery to a finite group of people personally vested in their environments across centuries. Join Layton Register for a deeper look at the influence of Mark Catesby\, Hans Sloane\, Carl Linnaeus\, John Bartram\, William Bartram\, Alexander Wilson\, Thomas Jefferson\, George Cuvier\, John Bachman\, John James Audubon\, and Charles Darwin. \nDATES: February 3rd\, 10th\, 17th\, 24th – March 3rd & 10th. \nCourse Time: 10:30am-12:00pm\, Mondays \nTickets:  Sold only as a six-week course (Seating is limited to 30) \nAbout Layton Register: \nLayton Register was born in Lexington\, Kentucky. He grew up on a farm outside of town that his mother and father operated for breeding and raising Thoroughbred racehorses. After graduating from Washington and Lee University\, Register spent most of his working career involved with Thoroughbred breeding and racing and in property management as well as coaching tennis. Register moved from Kentucky to Charleston five years ago and has been working as a certified tour guide for Walk and Talk Charleston\, as well as a volunteer for the Charleston Parks Conservancy and the Charleston Library Society. As an avid birdwatcher\, his dedicated interest in the world of birds inevitably led Register to the life and work of John James Audubon\, inspiring an imminent book titled Birdwatching (and Counting Birds) With John James Audubon: Where Have All the Birds Gone?

Join us to celebrate his work at Claflin and the cultural importance of the Black classical music festival.  \nPurchase tickets HERE. \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Book \nIn Beyond the Western Wall\, Tisdale provides a detailed guide as to how to apply the transformational visioning process as a key institutional change strategy. Hence\, it is a true guide to understanding visionary leadership\, and how to bring about transformational change. Chapter by chapter\, he digs deeply into the launching of a presidency\, academic excellence by design\, Student Success\, Innovations\, Fundraising\, and Succession Planning. Throughout the book\, the author emphasizes the importance of knowing how to launch an effective and sustainable presidency\, how to deploy transformational vision as a key change strategy\, how to lead effective dynamic strategic planning\, team building\, and teamwork\, and he also accentuates the importance of the partnership between the president and the board of trustees. It begins by knowing how to engage in a substantive discussion about roles and responsibilities and continuously having the board revisit their partnership with the president and their roles as institutional leaders\, fundraisers\, fiduciaries\, and strategic planners. In fact\, he shows throughout the book how the president can work effectively to establish and sustain a valuable partnership with the board always being clear on roles and responsibilities. By including examples and speeches throughout the work\, he demonstrates the vital role of presidents leading from the front in communicating\, visioning\, strategic planning\, and setting the tone for campus civility. He also goes to great lengths to discuss the president’s role in team building which begins with assessing the current strengths and always keeping the team informed as to the status of the team building progress while showing appreciation for what has been done. Also\, in the book he emphasizes his experience as a tenured faculty and a faculty champion as it relates to expectations\, recognition\, and rewards. His attention to and focus on student success is extraordinary and results in phenomenal success in retention and graduation rates. Ultimately\, Beyond the Western Wall is as much a case study of the author’s work as it is a how-to-do-it manual for transformational change. It takes the reader from the launching of a presidency to succession planning for his predecessor. Throughout the book\, the author has developed a powerful guide for higher education leaders and others who want to use transformational visioning to reposition an organization for sustained success.  \nAbout the Author \n\nNationally recognized as a transformative leader in higher education\, Henry N. Tisdale became the eighth president at Claflin University in 1994\, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics. He received a master’s degree from Temple University in the teaching of mathematics and another master’s in mathematics from Dartmouth College. He further became the first African American to receive a doctorate in mathematics from Dartmouth. The festival has presented in Atlanta\, Charleston and Columbia\, Nashville\, Houston\, Pittsburgh\, Richmond\, and Washington\, D.C. Few classical music enthusiasts are aware of the tremendous contributions of Le Chevalier de Saint-Georges\, an African-French composer whose opera and classical masterpieces equaled or far exceeded those of his 18th-century contemporaries. Although his compositions are highly recognized overseas\, they have gathered little notice in the United States. Today there are thousands of celebrated and prodigiously talented classical principals\, composers and performers of African descent throughout the world. Yet\, their opportunities to grace concert stages of major American orchestras are rare to non-existent. The Colour of Music Festival’s mission is reversing this trend. Since 2013\, the Colour of Music Festival offers a musical kaleidoscope highlighting the impact and historical significance of Black classical composers and performers on American and world culture. The Colour of Music Festival began with performances at various venues throughout historic Charleston\, South Carolina and has grown to debut in cities across the country with artists from across the globe. Assembling acclaimed Black chamber ensemble players and artists to form the Colour of Music Orchestra\, the Festival showcases some of the top Black classical musicians in the United States\, trained at some of the most prestigious music schools\, conservatories and universities in the world.

SUMMARY:The Enduring Influence of Classicism
DESCRIPTION:Drayton Hall\, an authentic colonial period dwelling in Charleston\, is the earliest and finest example of Palladian architecture in the United States – how the main house and surrounding buildings were designed\, built\, used and adjusted over time tells a unique take about the people who lived and worked there. In partnership with Drayton Hall and in the spirit of celebrating the roots of classical design and architecture in Charleston\, join nationally recognized\, next-generation practitioners to hear how the principles of classicism remain a great influence on their work through houses\, interiors\, and even exhibitions. Moderated by Haskell Harris\, founding style director of Garden & Gun magazine\, the talented group of panelists will include interior designer Elizabeth Lawrence\, Partner\, Williams Lawrence\, New York City; architect Steven Spandle\, Principal\, Steven W. In her recently published book The House Romantic\, (Abrams\, 2024)\, she expands on that theme\, visiting jubilant\, gorgeous\, story-filled houses in the art and interiors world that she calls “kindred spirits.”  Each chapter also includes a “Story Behind the Stuff” jaunt to the studio of an artist or a purveyor—of antique quilts\, glassware\, linens\, and more. Over the course of her twenty-year career in the shelter and lifestyle magazine world\, Harris has contributed to dozens of publications\, including Cottage Living\, House Beautiful\, Southern Accents\, and Better Homes & Gardens.  \nAbout Carter C. Hudgins \nCarter C. Hudgins\, is the president and CEO of the Drayton Hall Preservation Trust\, a 501c3 responsible for the operation and administration of Drayton Hall\, a historic site of the National Trust for Historic Preservation in Charleston\, S.C.\, and one of the finest examples of American architecture to survive from the colonial period. Dr. Hudgins has worked in the fields of archaeology\, history and historic preservation for more than 25 years. Prior to coming to Drayton Hall\, he worked as a senior staff archaeologist for the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities Jamestown Rediscovery Project. He has completed archaeological field work throughout southeastern North America and the Caribbean\, in addition to instructing undergraduate and graduate students. He most recently completed a Manhattan penthouse renovation with the iconic designer Bunny Williams and her New York team at Williams Lawrence. A native of Georgia\, Steven’s life-long fascination with architecture\, art\, and design began with childhood visits to museums and historic houses\, including Drayton Hall. These places and the history within profoundly shaped his professional pursuits as an architect and influenced his understanding of design.  \nAbout Elizabeth Lawrence \nElizabeth Lawrence has spent her career working alongside Bunny Williams\, designing projects across the country\, from Manhattan to Palm Beach to Los Angeles. The plantations of Charleston which are open to the public are all located about ten miles outside the city area of Charleston\, SC. Drayton Hall is the oldest and only preserved and accurate plantation house that can be visited and toured in Charleston. \nUnlike other plantations in Charleston\, Drayton Hall is the only authentic colonial period home that you can tour. The other plantation homes in Charleston were either burned and no longer have houses or the houses were built in the 20th century. Drayton Hall survived both the Revolutionary War and the Civil War and is the only plantation tour in Charleston of a house that survived both wars and legitimately dates to the 18th century. Drayton Hall has remarkable museum galleries and exhibits on both the pre-Civil War and post-Civil War time periods and the role Drayton Hall played in the history of Charleston. \nAbout The Charleston Show \nThe Charleston Show now in its fourth year presents a Collection of Antiques Contemporary Design\, Fine Art & Jewelry. \nThe Thursday evening Preview Party on March 20th benefits the Drayton Hall Preservation Trust. This gala opening event provides an opportunity to support the collections and preservation of the historic estate as well as a chance for a first look at the antique show’s offerings. Open to the public Friday March 21st through Sunday 23rd\, the Charleston Show brings together 30 exhibitors from the United States\, England and Europe showcasing the best period to mid-century furniture\, traditional and contemporary art and ceramics\, jewelry\, folk art\, oriental rugs\, silver\, prints and maps\, garden and architectural antiques. \nPlease note that registrants’ contact information is collected for all partnering organizations.
