SUMMARY:Honoring His Honor: America’s First Black State Supreme Court Justice
DESCRIPTION:Charleston resident Jonathan Jasper Wright\, an attorney originally from Pennsylvania\, was sworn into his seat on the South Carolina Supreme Court in 1870 – as the country’s first African American Supreme Court Justice. His tenure coincided with the rise and fall of the Reconstruction in the South\, a time of temporarily granted legal and political opportunities for Black Americans. Join the Charleston Library Society in welcoming Judge Richard Gergel and Professor William Burke\, both authors of Justice Wright’s story in the context of African-American struggles in the legal community during the Reconstruction\, for an in-depth reflection on the inspiring life of Justice Wright\, his political successes\, failures and his relevance to the new freedoms in the Age of Reconstruction. \nAbout Jonathan Jasper Wright \nJonathan Jasper Wright\, the first African American to serve on a state Supreme Court\, was born in Luzerne County\, Pennsylvania\, and grew up in nearby Susquehanna County in the northeastern corner of the state. In 1858\, Wright traveled to Ithaca\, New York where he enrolled in the Lancasterian Academy\, a school where older students helped teach younger ones. He graduated in 1860 and for the next five years taught school and read law in Pennsylvania. \nWright’s first known political activity came in October 1864 when he was a delegate to the National Convention of Colored Men meeting in Syracuse. The convention\, chaired by Frederick Douglass\, passed resolutions calling for a nationwide ban on slavery\, racial equality under the law\, and universal suffrage for adult males. When Wright applied for admission to the Pennsylvania bar\, however\, he was refused because of his race. \nIn 1865 the American Missionary Association sent Wright to Beaufort\, South Carolina to organize schools for the freed people. Wright taught and gave legal advice to the ex-slaves. In 1866 he returned to Pennsylvania and was now\, with the backing of a new Federal civil rights law\, accepted into the bar as the state’s first African American attorney. Wright returned to Beaufort in January 1867 and worked as a legal advisor for the Freedman’s Bureau. He soon became active in Republican politics and was chosen as a delegate to the South Carolina Constitutional Convention that met in Charleston in January 1868. Later that year he was elected to the South Carolina state senate representing Beaufort. In 1870 the Republican-dominated legislature in Columbia named him a justice of the state supreme court even though he was 30 and had little courtroom experience. He joined two white Democrats on the bench. \nBy 1876 white conservatives\, using fraud\, intimidation and violence\, managed to gain control over South Carolina’s government. However\, it was Wright’s concurrence in a February 1877 decision confirming the authority of a Democratic claimant to the governor’s chair\, Wade Hampton\, which ended Republican rule\, reconstruction in South Carolina\, and Wright’s tenure as a state Supreme Court Justice. When the new Democrat-controlled legislature attempted to impeach Wright for corruption and malfeasance he at first denied the charges and vowed to defend his name and record. By August 1877\, however\, realizing he would not win\, Wright submitted his resignation. \nWright moved to Charleston where he practiced law\, then to Orangeburg where he established the law department at Claflin College. Jonathan Wright died of tuberculosis in Orangeburg in 1885. \nAbout Judge Richard Gergel \nRichard Gergel is a United States district judge who presides in the same courthouse in Charleston\, where Judge Waties Waring once served. Waring is one of the central figures of Gergel’s book\, Unexampled Courage: The Blinding of Sgt. Isaac Woodard and the Awakening of President Harry S. Truman and Judge J. Waties Waring (Sarah Crichton). With his wife\, Dr. Belinda Gergel\, he also wrote In Pursuit of the Tree of Life: A History of the Early Jews of Columbia\, South Carolina. A native of Columbia\, South Carolina\, Judge Gergel earned undergraduate and law degrees from Duke University. \nAbout Professor William Burke \nProfessor Burke is a Distinguished Professor emeritus of the University of South Carolina School of Law. He taught at USC for 37 years. In that time he served as Director and Chair of Clinical Education and as Associate Dean. He has authored and edited seven books and numerous articles and book chapters. These include All for Civil Rights\, a history of the African American bar in S.C.; At Freedom’s Door\, essays on African American Founding Fathers in Reconstruction S.C.; and Matthew J. Perry:  The Man\, His Times and his Legacy. Now retired\, Professor Burke birds\, drives the tractor for his farmer wife and lectures on the long\, long struggle for civil rights in South Carolina.

SUMMARY:Lite Lunch // NY Times Bestseller "Leaving"
DESCRIPTION:Along with Buxton Books\, we are thrilled to welcome beloved author Roxana Robinson for exclusive appearance on her latest release\, Leaving\, a novel that explores the vows we make to one another\, the tensile relationships between parents and their children\, and what we owe to others and ourselves. Renowned for numerous works of literary fiction as well as a biography of Georgia O’Keeffe\, Robinson is not new to acclaim; Leaving has received accolades from Washington Post\, NYT\, People Magazine\, Oprah Daily\, NPR and many many more. \n“Leaving navigates the chasm between responsibility and desire when two long-lost lovers reconnect. This beautiful book will sweep you away.” ―People Magazine \nLite Lunch Lectures are $25 for Members and $35 for General Admission. \nAll tickets include a boxed-lunch. \nIf you are unable to attend the event\, but would like to purchase one or more signed copies\, please visit Buxton Books here. \nAbout the Book \nSarah and Warren’s college love story ended in a single moment. Decades later\, when a chance meeting brings them together\, a passion ignites—threatening the foundations of the lives they’ve built apart. Since they parted in college\, each has married\, raised a family\, and made a career. When they meet again\, Sarah is divorced and living outside New York\, while Warren is still married and living in Boston. Seeing Warren sparks an awakening in Sarah\, who feels emotionally alive for the first time in decades. Still\, she hesitates to reclaim a chance at love after her painful divorce and years of framing her life around her children and her work. Warren has no such reservations: he wants to leave his marriage but can’t predict how his wife and daughter will react. As their affair intensifies\, Sarah and Warren must confront the moral responsibilities of their love for their families and each other. Leaving charts a passage through loyalty and desire as it builds to a shattering conclusion. In her boldest and most powerful work to date\, Roxana Robinson demonstrates her “trademark gifts as an intelligent\, sensitive analyst of family life” (Wendy Smith\, Chicago Tribune) in an engrossing exploration of the vows we make to one another\, the tensile relationships between parents and their children\, and what we owe to others and ourselves. \nAbout Roxana Robinson \nRoxana Robinson is the author of eleven books—seven novels\, three collections of short stories\, and the biography of Georgia O’Keeffe. Four of these were chosen as New York Times Notable Books\, two as New York Times Editors’ Choices. Her fiction has appeared in The New Yorker\, The Atlantic\, Harper’s\, Best American Short Stories\, The Southampton Review\, Ep!phany and elsewhere. Two polar opposites at an elite Chicago high school bond over a three-thousand-year-old board game; Rafi Young will get lost in literature\, while Todd Keane’s work will lead to a startling AI breakthrough. \nThey meet on the history-scarred island of Makatea in French Polynesia\, whose deposits of phosphorus once helped to feed the world. Now the tiny atoll has been chosen for humanity’s next adventure: a plan to send floating\, autonomous cities out onto the open sea. But first\, the island’s residents must vote to green light the project or turn the seasteaders away. \nSet in the world’s largest ocean\, this awe-filled book explores that last wild place we have yet to colonize in a still-unfolding oceanic game\, and interweaves beautiful writing\, rich characterization\, profound themes of technology and the environment\, and a deep exploration of our shared humanity in a way only Richard Powers can. \nPlease note that the authors of our selections ARE NOT in attendance.  \n\n\n\n\n\nFor a copy of the book\, check out our catalog here\, or shop local at Buxton Books.

SUMMARY:Marking 50 Years of Breakthrough Writing
DESCRIPTION:Both standouts for their time – fifty years ago\, to be exact – we’re celebrating the continued impact of bestselling books by Peter H. Wood and Theodore Rosengarten that showcased the endurance of enslaved people in early America\, transforming the a widespread understanding of early American history. Black Majority (Peter Wood)\, features a new epilogue in its recently revised fiftieth-anniversary edition that challenges a fresh generation with provocative history. All God’s Dangers (Theodore Rosengarten) may be a “forgotten autobiography” as re-highlighted by The New York Times already once before\, but it was the National Book Award Winner in 1975\, surpassing many others that came out in the same banner year for non-fiction. \nMore relevant and enlightening than ever\, these literary works tell the stories of colonial African American language\, culture\, and expertise – all of which form the critical fibers of our nation’s history. Theodore Rosengarten and Peter H. Wood will reflect on what they have learned since publishing their respective works\, discuss the future of the African American past\, and reveal how their work has shaped their careers as historians and authors. \nIf you are unable to attend the event\, but would like to purchase one or more signed copies\, please visit Buxton Books for copies of Black Majority and All God’s Dangers. \nAbout Peter H. Wood \nPeter H. Wood grew up in St. Louis and Baltimore\, earning degrees at Harvard and Oxford before teaching early American history at Duke University for nearly four decades. In 1974\, Alfred A. Knopf published his dissertation about enslavement in colonial South Carolina. W.W. Norton has recently published an updated 50th-anniversary edition of this pioneering book with the fresh title\, Black Majority: Race\, Rice\, and Rebellion in South Carolina\, 1670-1740. Wood is the author of Strange New Land: Africans in Colonial America and several books about the Black images of American artist Winslow Homer\, including Near Andersonville: Winslow Homer’s Civil War (Harvard University Press\, 2010). He is also the co-author of a widely-used college U.S. History text entitled Created Equal. He has served on the boards of Harvard University\, the Omohundro Institute of Early American History\, and the Highlander Education Center in East Tennessee. Dr. Wood now lives in Colorado with his wife\, Pulitzer-Prize-winning historian\, Elizabeth Fenn. Recently\, he co-authored an essay on slave-built canals in South Carolina before the Stono Rebellion. When not growing gourds\, he is writing a book entitled The Great Southern Blackout\, about the scope and consequences of two centuries of forced Black illiteracy across the South. \nAbout Black Majority \nFirst published in 1974\, Black Majority chronicles the crucial formative years of North America’s wealthiest and most tormented British colony. It explores how West African familiarity with rice determined the Lowcountry economy and how a skilled but enslaved labor force formed its own distinctive language and culture. While African American history often focuses on the nineteenth and twentieth centuries\, Black Majority underscores the significant role early African arrivals played in shaping the direction of American history. \nAbout Theodore Rosengarten \nTheodore Rosengarten is a writer\, teacher and a social activist from McClellanville\, South Carolina. Born in Brooklyn\, New York\, Ted got his AB from Amherst College\, and a PhD in The History of American Civilization\, from Harvard. Even as a child\, he was obsessed by the black struggle for justice and freedom and by the destruction of the Jews in Europe. His first book\, All God’s Dangers: The Life of Nate Shaw\, the oral history of an African American tenant farmer from Alabama\, won the National Book Award. His second book\, Tombee: Portrait of a Cotton Planter\, chronicles the life of an unsuccessful plantation owner from St. Helena Island\, South Carolina. This book won the National Book Critics Circle Award for best biography. Last year\, Yad Vashem Studies published Ted’s critical review of Steven T. Katz’s opus comparing the The Holocaust and New World Slavery. Ted taught for decades in the Jewish Studies Program at the College of Charleston and in the Honors College at the University of South Carolina. Since 2002\, Ted and his wife Dale have led a biennial study abroad to Poland\, Germany and The Netherlands called Tracing the Holocaust. Looking to unearth the past\, they encounter the new racial demography of European cities. \nAbout the All God’s Dangers \nNate Shaw’s father was born under slavery. Nate Shaw was born into a bondage that was only a little gentler. At the age of nine\, he was picking cotton for thirty-five cents an hour. At the age of forty-seven\, he faced down a crowd of white deputies who had come to confiscate a neighbor’s crop. His defiance cost him twelve years in prison. This triumphant autobiography\, assembled from the eighty-four-year-old Shaw’s oral reminiscences\, is the plain-spoken story of an “over-average” man who witnessed wrenching changes in the lives of Southern black people—and whose unassuming courage helped bring those changes about. \nPrior to the program\, We invite our Fellows Members to enjoy a Happy Hour from 5:00 – 6:00pm\, downstairs in the Dr. Suzan D. Boyd Fellows Club Lounge.
