SUMMARY:"Putin's World"\, with The World Affairs Council
DESCRIPTION:Foreign Policy has been a welcomed addition to our diverse programming\, and this discussion could not be better timed. Along with the World Affairs Council of Charleston and Buxton Books\, we are honored for the opportunity to host renowned diplomacy expert Angela Stent\, for insights into the Russian President’s approach to international relations and her incisive exploration of ‘how and why Russia has returned to the world stage. As the Senior Advisor to the Center for Eurasian\, Russian\, and East European Studies\, and Professor Emerita of Government and Foreign Service at Georgetown University\, her book\, Putin’s World\, uniquely examines the country’s turbulent past and the Russians’ understanding of their position on the global stage and their ambitions. Originally published in 2019\, the revised edition out last year now also includes a new chapter solely dedicated to the war in Ukraine. \n“Informed by its author’s distinguished career in government and academia\, this account of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s worldview provides an important window into one of the key geopolitical challenges of our time. Casual observers and seasoned experts will benefit from Dr. Stent’s brilliant exploration of Putin’s strategy and its disturbing implications for the West.” ―Former Secretary of State Madeleine K. Albright \nIf you are unable to attend the event\, but would like to purchase one or more signed copies\, please visit Buxton Books here. \nAbout the Book \n\n\nHow did Russia manage to emerge resurgent on the world stage and play a weak hand so effectively? Is it because Putin is a brilliant strategist? Or has Russia stepped into a vacuum created by the West’s distraction with its own domestic problems and US ambivalence about whether it still wants to act as a superpower? Putin’s World examines the country’s conviction that the West has tried to deny them a seat at the table of great powers since the USSR collapsed. This book looks at Russia’s key relationships—its downward spiral with the United States\, Europe\, and NATO; its ties to China\, Japan\, the Middle East; and with its neighbors\, particularly the fraught relationship with Ukraine. Putin’s World will help Americans understand how and why the post-Cold War era has given way to a new\, more dangerous world\, one in which Russia poses a challenge to the United States in every corner of the globe—and one in which Russia has become a toxic and divisive subject in US politics. \n\n\nAbout Angela Stent \nAngela Stent is Senior Adviser to the Center for Eurasian\, Russian\, and East European Studies and Professor Emerita of Government and Foreign Service at Georgetown University. She is also a fellow at the Brookings Institution and a senior advisor to the United States Institute of Peace. She was a member of the senior advisory panel for NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander in Europe for Admiral James Stavridis and General Philip Breedlove. From 2004 to 2006\, she served as National Intelligence Officer for Russia and Eurasia at the National Intelligence Council. She is the author of The Limits of Partnership: US-Russian Relations in the Twenty-First Century\, for which she won the American Academy of Diplomacy’s Douglas Dillon prize for the best book on the practice of American diplomacy. Stent’s primary research focus is Russian foreign policy\, with special emphasis on the triangular U.S-Europe-Russia relationship. Her latest book is Putin’s World: Russia Against the West and With the Rest (2019\, updated paperback 2023)\, for which she won the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy’s prize for the best book on U.S-Russian Relations. Dr. Stent received her B.A. from Cambridge University\, her MSc. with distinction from the London School of Economics and Political Science and her M.A. and PhD. from Harvard University. \nAbout The World Affairs Council \nThe World Affairs Council of Charleston (WACC)\, formerly the Charleston Foreign Affairs Forum\, was founded in the early 1980s as a nonprofit\, nonpartisan organization. Membership represents a cross-section of individuals from business\, education\, and civic backgrounds. Through thought-provoking presentations and discussions\, participants of all ages and backgrounds are invited to challenge and enhance their understanding of the world. WACC is a 501(c)(3) organization and is a member of the World Affairs Councils of America\, a network of 93 independent\, nonpartisan councils across 40 states.

SUMMARY:CLS Book Club // "The Demon of Unrest" by Erik Larson
DESCRIPTION:CLS Book Club is FREE\, in-person\, and open to the public—and also member-researched and led through thoughtfully curated discussion. Whether you’ve finished the book\, are thinking about starting it\, or couldn’t make it past the halfway point\, please join us. \nRSVP is required via the form below so that we can plan for seating. \nPlease note that the authors of our selections ARE NOT in attendance. \nAbout Book Club \nOffered a few times a year\, the CLS Book Club seeks to explore a wide range of topics\, authors and diversity within its book selections. Under this objective\, Book Club also offers space for conversation\, perspectives and discourse. For The Demon of Unrest\, Book Club’s resident Erik Larson completist\, the dynamic Mike Gottlieb\, will present a through exploration of the book after which the floor will open to questions and discussion. \nAbout the Book \n\n\n\n\n\nOn November 6\, 1860\, Abraham Lincoln became the fluky victor in a tight race for president. The country was bitterly at odds; Southern extremists were moving ever closer to destroying the Union\, with one state after another seceding and Lincoln powerless to stop them. Slavery fueled the conflict\, but somehow the passions of North and South came to focus on a lonely federal fortress in Charleston Harbor: Fort Sumter. Master storyteller Erik Larson offers a gripping account of the chaotic months between Lincoln’s election and the Confederacy’s shelling of Sumter—a period marked by tragic errors and miscommunications\, enflamed egos and craven ambitions\, personal tragedies and betrayals. Lincoln himself wrote that the trials of these five months were “so great that\, could I have anticipated them\, I would not have believed it possible to survive them.”At the heart of this suspense-filled narrative are Major Robert Anderson\, Sumter’s commander and a former slave owner sympathetic to the South but loyal to the Union; Edmund Ruffin\, a vain and bloodthirsty radical who stirs secessionist ardor at every opportunity; and Mary Boykin Chesnut\, wife of a prominent planter\, conflicted over both marriage and slavery and seeing parallels between them. In the middle of it all is the overwhelmed Lincoln\, battling with his duplicitous Secretary of State\, William Seward\, as he tries desperately to avert a war that he fears is inevitable—one that will eventually kill 750\,000 Americans. Drawing on diaries\, secret communiques\, slave ledgers\, and plantation records\, Larson gives us a political horror story that captures the forces that led America to the brink—a dark reminder that we often don’t see a cataclysm coming until it’s too late. \n\n\n\n\n\nFor a copy of the book\, check out our catalog here\, or shop local at Buxton Books.

SUMMARY:CLS Wine Club // Burgundy
DESCRIPTION:After emerging from a lively conversation in our Fellows Lounge\, CLS Wine Club has been welcomed on repeat – this Fall marking 2 years since its first. During the Fall installment\, reds are the category\, this time Burgundy\, with insights from our founding aficionados\, Jerry Mitchell and Tim Cantopher\, to guide the selections and overall theme. Their learned preferences and curiosities from storied outings and clubs centered around the complexities of wine coupled with a our partner Monarch Wines\, allow just the right blend of lesser known vineyards\, small-production varietals with a bit of wit and wisdom as well. \nPlease Note: These wines are available in limited and time-sensitive quantities\, therefore\, we must secure them ahead of time. For this reason\, your admission also includes one of each of the four bottles to take home. (Avg $35/bottle) For those who come as a couple\, there is an option for two people and four bottles. Seating is limited in order to host a conversation-style wine tasting where the experts will walk us through four specifically chosen bottles and dissect the nuance associated with each. Part of participating in the wine club is the opportunity to purchase wines that would otherwise not be available at retail. \nAbout Monarch and Justin Coleman \nYears of selecting wines for some of NYC’s favorite spots (Balthazar\, Commerce\, Morandi\, The Mark) have helped Justin (owner and propietor of Monarch Wines) cultivate strong relationships with both European and American winemakers\, importers\, and distributors. From lugging bottles to creating beverage programs\, to managing operations\, Justin has worked with some of the most exalted names in the business. Seeking a slower pace of life for his young family at the time (wife\, Sarah\, and eldest daughter\, Fia)\, Justin headed south to Charleston in 2013\, landing at The Ordinary as General Manager. At The Ordinary\, Justin fostered an appreciation for\, and understanding of\, the community in Charleston. Monarch Wine Merchants opened in 2017\, filling a void in the market at the time for a true neighborhood wine shop\, focused on wine and only wine. Delivering the highest level of customer service has become a hallmark of the shop. Justin is forever passionate about keeping the shelves well-stocked at the brick and mortar\, while also sourcing highly allocated wines for both local clients and those further afield. \nThere are two ticket options available: \n*Single $285 // $145 ticket price + $140 wine price (4 bottles to take home) \n*Couple $430 // $290 ticket price + $140 wine price (4 bottles to take home) \nFellows members will have first option for securing seats.

SUMMARY:275th Milestones Shaping the Peninsula
DESCRIPTION:As the second oldest membership library in the United States dating to 1748\, it is quite special to have recently celebrated 275 years of continuous operations\, and even more special to have the opportunity to highlight another this year. Founded in 1749\, KKBE (Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim — Holy Congregation House of God) is among the oldest Jewish Congregations in this country and its sanctuary is the oldest synagogue building in continual use in the USA. The congregation is also celebrating the 200th anniversary of the birth of Reform Judaism in America\, launched by its members in 1824. In celebration of this monumental milestone\, join us to honor the legacy and impact of Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim on 275 years of history\, culture on the Peninsula for almost three centuries. \nAttendance is Free with RSVP\, Please register below. \nAbout KKBE \nFounded in 1749\, The KKBE or Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim\, is known as the birthplace of American Reform Judaism and holds a rich heritage in which all American Jews can take pride. Charleston was founded in 1670\, with the earliest known reference to a Jew in the English settlement dated 1695. Soon after many others followed\, attracted by the civil and religious liberty of South Carolina and the ample economic opportunity of the colony. The group had grown significantly by 1749 to organize the present congregation\, Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim\, followed fifteen years later with the establishment of the now historic Coming Street Cemetery\, the oldest surviving Jewish burial ground in the South. \nWhen George Washington became President of the United States of America\, there were six Jewish congregations in the new American Republic. Three were located in Northern cities: Newport\, Rhode Island’s Yeshuat Israel (Touro)\, New York’s Shearith Israel\, and Philadelphia’s Michveh Israel. Three were located in the South: Richmond\, Virginia’s Beth Shalome\, Savannah\, Georgia’s Mickve Israel\, and Charleston’s own Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim. At first\, prayers were recited in private quarters and\, from 1775\, in an improvised synagogue adjacent to the present-day grounds. In 1792\, construction of the largest and most impressive synagogue in the United States commenced\, and it was dedicated just two years later. A member of the visiting Lafayette’s entourage is reported to have described the building as “spacious and elegant.” This handsome\, cupolated Georgian synagogue was destroyed in the great Charleston fire of 1838 and replaced in 1840 by the structure in use today. The colonnaded building was dedicated in early 1841\, and is often described as one of the country’s finest examples of Greek Revival architecture. On this occasion\, KKBE’s Reverend Gustavus Poznanski was moved to say\, “This synagogue is our Temple\, this city our Jerusalem\, and this happy land our Palestine.

SUMMARY:Across the Sea: Liverpool Calling
DESCRIPTION:Located on the eastern side of Mersey Estuary\, adjacent to the Irish Sea\, and a mere 178 miles from London\, Liverpool\, England was established in 1207 but quickly developed into the second city of the British Empire after King John needed a port from which to send his troops to Ireland. The city attracts visitors worldwide each and every year\, but a lesser known fact is that Liverpool holds more historical links to the USA than any other city except London. In honor of the milestone anniversary we honored just last year\, join us in welcoming members of the Liverpool Athenaeum for a stateside visit\, and very special “amuse-bouche” of the historical and literary links between America and the great city of Liverpool. \nAbout the Liverpool Athenaeum \nDuring the last decade of the 18th Century\, England was embroiled in a long and costly war with France. As the major port on the western seaboard of England\, Liverpool played a key role in this war. If Liverpool’s merchants and other professionals were to carry on trade and assist the port’s growth\, they were in vital need of commercial and political information. Thus\, a number of the leading citizens conceived the idea of founding a club and in 1797\, circulated a document entitled ‘Outlines of a plan for a library and newsroom’. The prospectus proposed “to procure a regular supply of newspapers\, both town and country; all the periodicals of any value\, and all the pamphlets that have reference to subjects of local or general polity or commerce and the institution was to provide books for the acquisition of general knowledge and for entertainment”. The library opened on 1st May 1800. The heart of the Athenaeum is undoubtedly its library. This is one of the greatest proprietary libraries in the UK containing books\, prints\, maps\, and charts as well as one of the most important regional history resources in the country. Although the privileges are primarily reserved for its Proprietors (members)\, arrangements can be made\, for researchers and others to make use of the library. \nAbout Linda Iley: Athenaeum Proprietor \nLinda Iley is a proud Liverpudlian. Raised in the storied port city\, Linda was educated at The Liverpool Institute\, during the same era it was attended by Paul McCartney and George Harrison. A teacher by trade\, Linda has taught all ages from three to twenty-three in Schools and Universities in Liverpool\, Cambridge\, Singapore and Hong Kong. A polymath\, Linda enjoys history\, music\, and travel. She has produced a number of previous programs\, including\, as part of the Liverpool Welsh Choral\, a “Tribute to the Titanic”\, a music-forward memoriam performed during the Centennial of the event at the Liverpool Anglican Cathedral. Linda has fond memories of road trips throughout the US and looks forward to her return. \nAbout Ann Hughes: Athenaeum Proprietor \nPrevious to her tenure as Athenaeum\, Ann Hughes served for 31 years at the Range High School in Formby\, where she was one of ten teachers who helped inaugurate the brand new school in 1976. During her time at the Range High School Ann acted as its Secondary Teacher of French and subsequently as its Head of Modern Languages as well as a mentor for Undergraduate Students of Education. \n \nPrior to the program\, We invite our Fellows Members to enjoy a Happy Hour from 5:00 – 6:00pm\, downstairs in the Dr. Susan D. Boyd Fellows Club Lounge.

SUMMARY:Lite Lunch // Vanity Fair Legend discusses "Growing Up Getty"
DESCRIPTION:The contemporary story of one of the wealthiest and most misunderstood families in the world\, unearthed by leading editor\, journalist and Vanity Fair writer-at-large James Reginato\, makes a special appearance this Fall to discuss his 2022 book Growing Up Getty: The Story of America’s Most Unconventional Dynasty. In a compelling conversation with George McNeely (historian\, lecturer\, and writer and the former Senior Vice President of Business Development at Christie’s)\, Reginato will provide a peek behind the curtain on his extensive research into the life of J. Paul Getty; the diaries\, love letters\, and interviews that led to his enthralling reveal. With a career interviewing some of the world’s most elusive individuals including Bunny Mellon\, the Prince of Wales and Aga Khan\, the world of J. Reginato will be sure to inspire. \nIf you are unable to attend the event\, but would like to purchase one or more signed copies\, please visit Buxton Books here. \nAbout the Book \nGrowing Up Getty: The Story of America’s Most Unconventional Dynasty shares the life of oil magnate J. Paul Getty\, once the richest man in the world\, and also the patriarch of an extraordinary cast of sons\, grandchildren\, and great-grandchildren. While some have been brought low by mental illness\, drug addiction\, and one of the most sensational kidnapping cases of the 20th century\, many of Getty’s heirs have achieved great success. In addition to Mark Getty\, a co-founder of Getty Images\, and Anne G. Earhart\, an award-winning environmentalist\, others have made significant marks in a variety of fields\, from music and viniculture to politics and LGBTQ rights. Now\, across four continents\, a new generation of lively\, unique\, and even outrageous Gettys is emerging—and not coasting on the dynasty’s still-immense wealth. A far-flung yet surprisingly close-knit group\, the ascendant Gettys are bringing this iconic family onto the global stage in the 21st century. \nAbout James Reginato \nJournalist and author James Reginato is a longtime writer-at-large at Vanity Fair. Reginato’s work has also appeared in such publications as WSJ\, Sotheby’s\, Town & Country\, New York and W Magazine\, where he served as Features Director for many years. He is the author of books including Great Houses\, Modern Aristocrats (published by Rizzoli)\, an intimate and lively look at some of Great Britain’s most historic houses and the families who still live in them. His most recent book\, Growing Up Getty: The Story of America’s Most Unconventional Dynasty was published by Simon & Schuster. While becoming the richest man in the world\, Minnesota-born oil magnate J. Paul Getty (1892-1976) produced five sons with five wives. His descendants–19\ngrandchildren and (at last count) 45 great grandchildren–have grappled in astonishingly diverse ways with the fate of belonging to a modern dynasty. Through deep research as well as interviews with family members and their intimates\, Reginato pierced many of the myths that have surrounded this complex and elusive family. A native of Chicago\, James is a graduate of Columbia University and lives in New York City. \nAbout George McNeely \nGeorge McNeely is an architectural historian\, lecturer and writer. He writes a regular column on architectural history in the Chestnut Hill Local. He co-edited World Monuments: 50 Irreplaceable Sites to Discover\, Explore and Champion (Rizzoli\, 2015). Most recently he was Vice President for International Affairs at World Monuments Fund\, the premier international organization working to protect the world’s architectural heritage. Prior to joining WMF\, George was with Christie’s for 15 years as a senior vice president in Business Development and the Chairman’s Office. Previously\, he worked at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and in management consulting. George has a BA in art history from Princeton University and an MBA from the Columbia Business School. He has also served as a charity auctioneer for hundreds of charity events throughout the United States and abroad. His auctioneering skills have also led to television appearances\, including on Law & Order.

SUMMARY:Honoring His Honor: America’s First Black State Supreme Court Justice
DESCRIPTION:Charleston resident Jonathan Jasper Wright\, an attorney originally from Pennsylvania\, was sworn into his seat on the South Carolina Supreme Court in 1870 – as the country’s first African American Supreme Court Justice. His tenure coincided with the rise and fall of the Reconstruction in the South\, a time of temporarily granted legal and political opportunities for Black Americans. Join the Charleston Library Society in welcoming Judge Richard Gergel and Professor William Burke\, both authors of Justice Wright’s story in the context of African-American struggles in the legal community during the Reconstruction\, for an in-depth reflection on the inspiring life of Justice Wright\, his political successes\, failures and his relevance to the new freedoms in the Age of Reconstruction. \nAbout Jonathan Jasper Wright \nJonathan Jasper Wright\, the first African American to serve on a state Supreme Court\, was born in Luzerne County\, Pennsylvania\, and grew up in nearby Susquehanna County in the northeastern corner of the state. In 1858\, Wright traveled to Ithaca\, New York where he enrolled in the Lancasterian Academy\, a school where older students helped teach younger ones. He graduated in 1860 and for the next five years taught school and read law in Pennsylvania. \nWright’s first known political activity came in October 1864 when he was a delegate to the National Convention of Colored Men meeting in Syracuse. The convention\, chaired by Frederick Douglass\, passed resolutions calling for a nationwide ban on slavery\, racial equality under the law\, and universal suffrage for adult males. When Wright applied for admission to the Pennsylvania bar\, however\, he was refused because of his race. \nIn 1865 the American Missionary Association sent Wright to Beaufort\, South Carolina to organize schools for the freed people. Wright taught and gave legal advice to the ex-slaves. In 1866 he returned to Pennsylvania and was now\, with the backing of a new Federal civil rights law\, accepted into the bar as the state’s first African American attorney. Wright returned to Beaufort in January 1867 and worked as a legal advisor for the Freedman’s Bureau. He soon became active in Republican politics and was chosen as a delegate to the South Carolina Constitutional Convention that met in Charleston in January 1868. Later that year he was elected to the South Carolina state senate representing Beaufort. In 1870 the Republican-dominated legislature in Columbia named him a justice of the state supreme court even though he was 30 and had little courtroom experience. He joined two white Democrats on the bench. \nBy 1876 white conservatives\, using fraud\, intimidation and violence\, managed to gain control over South Carolina’s government. However\, it was Wright’s concurrence in a February 1877 decision confirming the authority of a Democratic claimant to the governor’s chair\, Wade Hampton\, which ended Republican rule\, reconstruction in South Carolina\, and Wright’s tenure as a state Supreme Court Justice. When the new Democrat-controlled legislature attempted to impeach Wright for corruption and malfeasance he at first denied the charges and vowed to defend his name and record. By August 1877\, however\, realizing he would not win\, Wright submitted his resignation. \nWright moved to Charleston where he practiced law\, then to Orangeburg where he established the law department at Claflin College. Jonathan Wright died of tuberculosis in Orangeburg in 1885. \nAbout Judge Richard Gergel \nRichard Gergel is a United States district judge who presides in the same courthouse in Charleston\, where Judge Waties Waring once served. Waring is one of the central figures of Gergel’s book\, Unexampled Courage: The Blinding of Sgt. Isaac Woodard and the Awakening of President Harry S. Truman and Judge J. Waties Waring (Sarah Crichton). With his wife\, Dr. Belinda Gergel\, he also wrote In Pursuit of the Tree of Life: A History of the Early Jews of Columbia\, South Carolina. A native of Columbia\, South Carolina\, Judge Gergel earned undergraduate and law degrees from Duke University. \nAbout Professor William Burke \nProfessor Burke is a Distinguished Professor emeritus of the University of South Carolina School of Law. He taught at USC for 37 years. In that time he served as Director and Chair of Clinical Education and as Associate Dean. He has authored and edited seven books and numerous articles and book chapters. These include All for Civil Rights\, a history of the African American bar in S.C.; At Freedom’s Door\, essays on African American Founding Fathers in Reconstruction S.C.; and Matthew J. Perry: The Man\, His Times and his Legacy. Now retired\, Professor Burke birds\, drives the tractor for his farmer wife and lectures on the long\, long struggle for civil rights in South Carolina.

Decades later\, when a chance meeting brings them together\, a passion ignites—threatening the foundations of the lives they’ve built apart. Since they parted in college\, each has married\, raised a family\, and made a career. When they meet again\, Sarah is divorced and living outside New York\, while Warren is still married and living in Boston. Seeing Warren sparks an awakening in Sarah\, who feels emotionally alive for the first time in decades. Still\, she hesitates to reclaim a chance at love after her painful divorce and years of framing her life around her children and her work. Warren has no such reservations: he wants to leave his marriage but can’t predict how his wife and daughter will react. As their affair intensifies\, Sarah and Warren must confront the moral responsibilities of their love for their families and each other. Leaving charts a passage through loyalty and desire as it builds to a shattering conclusion. In her boldest and most powerful work to date\, Roxana Robinson demonstrates her “trademark gifts as an intelligent\, sensitive analyst of family life” (Wendy Smith\, Chicago Tribune) in an engrossing exploration of the vows we make to one another\, the tensile relationships between parents and their children\, and what we owe to others and ourselves. \nAbout Roxana Robinson \nRoxana Robinson is the author of eleven books—seven novels\, three collections of short stories\, and the biography of Georgia O’Keeffe.
