SUMMARY:In the Kitchen with Evie McGee Colbert
DESCRIPTION:Following the initial debut at the Gaillard in Sept\, we are pleased to join the Ashley Hall Alumnae Association along with Buxton Books in hosting Evie McGee Colbert for an intimate local’s peek into the stories and makings of this extra special\, and debut\, cookbook. Complete with banter typically only heard at their dining room table\, Does This Taste Funny? includes more than 100 recipes – everything from “Stephen’s Kindergarten Soup” to “The Colbert Bump Cocktail\,” and all with an emphasis on the Colberts’ native Lowcountry cuisine. \nIf you are unable to attend the event\, but would like to purchase one or more signed copies\, please visit Buxton Books here. \nABOUT THE BOOK \n\n\n\n\n\nAs Evie and Stephen explain it\, Does This Taste Funny? had its beginnings in the Covid lockdown. “We were all stuck together and couldn’t go out\, so we cooked. We had all three kids back under one roof for the first time in a long time\, and we had dinner each night as a family. Cooking together became a major source of entertainment.” \nNow\, the Colberts invite us into their kitchen and around their dining room table. Sharing Stephen and Evie’s favorite recipes\, as well as those of their family and friends\, this book offers everything from Party Food (called “party food” because “appetizers” implies something to follow when we all know that\, often\, this is the only course)\, to Seafood\, to Poultry and Meat (“Evie and I have different relationships to meat. I like it. Evie can take it or leave it\, and mostly she leaves it.”)\, to Desserts (“This is one of the largest sections of the book. Evie always reminds me that desserts are a great way to postpone clearing up.”)\, to Drinks (“I love cocktail hour. It feels like a reward for having gone so long without a cocktail”)\, all tied together with playful dialogue between Stephen and Evie and gorgeous shots of their food\, family\, and home. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nEvie McGee grew up in Charleston along with husband Stephen Colbert\, but somehow the two didn’t meet until their mid-twenties. McGee Colbert is a graduate of the University of Virginia and the Circle in the Square Theater School. While beginning her career as an actor\, she eventually transitioned to the other side of the footlights and worked for many years in nonprofit theater. Among her various positions\, she was the the director of development for both the Drama League of New York and the Remains Theater of Chicago. She is a founding board member of Montclair Film\, and currently serves as the President of its Board of Directors. In April of 2020\, she was appointed to NJ Governor Phil Murphy’s Restart and Recovery Commission and continues to serve as an arts advocate in that capacity. She has also recently joined the board of the International African American Museum. She and Stephen are the founders of Spartina Industries\, where she serves as Vice President of Spartina Productions and operates with a first-look deal from CBS Studios. Spartina projects include Derek DelGaudio’s In & Of Itself on Hulu\, After Midnight with Taylor Tomlinson and an upcoming series adaptation of The Chronicles of Amber by Roger Zelazny. She lives in New Jersey with her husband and three children.

SUMMARY:An Unsung 20th Century Power Player\, Pamela Harriman
DESCRIPTION:Just days after publication\, join CLS in partnership with the Royal Oak Foundation to welcome UK-based Sonia Purnell\, bestselling author and journalist\, for her latest book\, Kingmaker\, an electrifying re-examination and eye-popping tale of the money\, politics\, and fabulous clothes of Pamela Harriman\, one of the 20th century’s greatest unsung power players. Known for her lively writing style and meticulous research on important historical figures\, Purnell reveals a wealth of fresh research\, interviews and newly discovered sources that unveil for the first time\, the spectacular story and true legacy of Churchill’s beloved daughter-in-law and the indelible mark she left on the world today. \n Secure Tickets ~ HERE \nCharleston Library Society Members are able to secure Membership Pricing with code: CLS24 \nIf you are unable to attend the event\, but would like to purchase one or more signed copies\, please visit Buxton Books here. \nAbout the Book \n\n\nFrom the New York Times bestselling and award-winning author of A Woman of No Importance\, an electrifying re-examination of one of the 20th century’s greatest unsung power players. When Pamela Churchill Harriman died in 1997\, the obituaries that followed were predictably scathing – and many were downright sexist. At the young age of 20 she became a “secret weapon” during World War II\, strategically wining\, dining\, and seducing diplomats and generals to help win over American sentiment (and secrets) to the British cause against Hitler. After the war\, she helped to transform Fiat heir Gianni Agnelli into Italy’s ‘uncrowned king’ on the international stage and after moving to the US brought a struggling Democratic party back to life\, hand-picking Bill Clinton from obscurity and vaulting him to the presidency. Picked as Ambassador to France\, she deployed her legendary subtle powers to charm world leaders and help efforts to bring peace to Bosnia\, playing her part in what was arguably the high-water mark of American global supremacy. There are few at any time who have operated as close to the center of power over five decades and two continents\, and there is practically no one in 20th Century politics\, culture\, and fashion whose lives she did not touch\, including the Kennedys\, Truman Capote\, Aly Khan\, Kay Graham\, Gloria Steinem\, Ed Murrow\, and Frank Sinatra. Written with the novelistic richness and investigative rigor that only Sonia Purnell could bring to this story full of sex\, politics\, yachts\, palaces and fabulous clothes\, Kingmaker re-asserts Harriman’s rightful place at the heart of history. \n\n\n\nAbout Sonia Purnell \nSonia Purnell is a journalist and bestselling author known for her lively writing style and meticulous research with a growing readership across the world. Her first book – the unauthorised biography of Boris Johnson called Just Boris: A Tale of Blond Ambition – was long listed for the Orwell prize in 2011. Her second book\, First Lady in the UK and Clementine in the US\, (a finalist for the Plutarch prize) revealed for the first time the vital role played in Winston Churchill’s career by his wife Clementine and has been optioned to be made into a Hollywood movie. Her new work\, A Woman of No Importance\, is the astonishing but true-life tale of a female spy in WWII\, Virginia Hall\, a young American socialite with a wooden leg\, who helped fan the flames of French Resistance. It will be published in March in the UK and elsewhere in April and the rights have already been sold to Paramount for a major film starring Daisy Ridley. \nSonia Purnell’s work is ‘brilliant’ (The Independent)\, and ‘indispensable’ (The Guardian) because ‘she dares to speak truth unto power’. The Wall Street Journal described her biography of Clementine Churchill as ‘a fine book’ and an ‘astute and pacey’ account\, while the New York Times described her work as ‘engrossing’ and the Daily Telegraph as ‘admirable’. \nShe has written for most national newspapers in the UK\, several prestigious publications in other countries including the Wall Street Journal in the US\, and lives in London with her husband and two sons.

SUMMARY:From Concept to Corridor: Preservation of Taveau Church
DESCRIPTION:Twenty-five sites in Berkeley County are on the National Register of Historic Places. Just one of them is explicitly associated with the Black experience. Join CLS in welcoming a panel of preservations and visionaries to tell the inspirational story of the rehabilitation of Taveau Church\, a Black Methodist sanctuary dating back to 1847 that had fallen into dilapidation\, how it led them to the concept and creation of a Berkeley County Sacred Corridor\, now an isolated stretch along the Cooper River where there are but three places to visit: Mepkin Abbey\, Taveau Church\, and Strawberry Chapel. Former Southern Region Director for the National Trust for Historic Preservation\, John Hildreth will moderate a conversation with Bill Fitzpatrick of Preservation South Carolina\, Cynthia Gibbs of the Taveau Legacy Committee\, Dr. Robert Ball of the Strawberry Chapel Vestry\, and Father Joe Tedesco from Mepkin Abbey. \nIn the words of Bill Fitzpatrick: \nAbout ten years ago\, I decided to photograph all accessible National Register landmarks in South Carolina\, one of which was Taveau Church in rural Berkeley County. On a cool February morning\, I walked around the perimeter of the dilapidated building\, amazed that the wooden structure had survived nearly 200 years of coastal winds\, rains\, and heat\, and amazed again at the information I had at hand: Taveau Church was used by Black Methodists before the Civil War. After the war\, faithful generations continued to use the church until it was closed by the United Methodist Conference in 1974. But despite its incredible historic value as a place “ground zero” to so much of our nation’s history\, Taveau\, with over a century of continuous Black worship\, and built on land that was once owned by Founding Father and slave trader\, Henry Laurens\, was a gust of wind from being lost\, a fact I remembered when I later became board chair of Preservation South Carolina. \nThe effort to preserve Taveau would require perseverance and faith\, a belief that this sacred place\, located within the Cooper River Historic District\, and between two other National Register Landmarks with roots to the early 1700s\, Mepkin Plantation (now Mepkin Abbey) and Strawberry Chapel\, had an essential story worth telling. \nAbout Bill Fitzpatrick \nBill earned MBA from the University of South Carolina in 1978\, and eventually became part owner of two companies that provide technical services to large restaurant chains. As time allowed\, Bill embraced his lifelong interests in travel\, writing\, history\, and photography. In the early 1990s\, he and his former college roommate bicycled across the United States\, an effort that led the pair to author the book\, Bottoms Up\, America! In 2008\, Bill wrote another travel essay book about his experiences in India: Destination India\, Destiny Unknown. The book led Bill to write a long-standing monthly “Americana” column for Khabar\, an Atlanta-based magazine that caters to the interests of the Indian American community. His most recent work\, South Carolina’s Sacred Spaces\, a 264-page coffee table book\, describes 70 of our state’s most significant churches and temples. He and his wife\, Dr. Janis Bandelin\, the former director of libraries for Furman University\, donated all proceeds from the sale of the book to Preservation South Carolina and its Sacred Spaces fund. Bill serves on the board of Preservation South Carolina as its past board chair and is an at-large member of the Upcountry History Museum’s executive committee. \nAbout Cynthia Gibbs \nMs. Gibbs was born in Moncks Corner\, SC\, graduated from Berkeley High School\, and received her commission in the US Air Force through the ROTC program at Baptist College at Charleston\, now Charleston Southern University. She retired from the Air Force after 21 years having served tours of duty in the Pentagon\, three major commands\, Joint Duty\, the Republic of Panama just prior to Operation Just Cause\, and numerous temporary duty assignments in Europe and the Pacific. After her military career\, Ms. Gibbs founded Sage Horizons\, a management consulting firm that performed over 20 years of prime contracts in 16 federal agencies including Homeland Security\, US Air Force\, Veterans Affairs\, and the Department of Transportation. She retired from Sage Horizons on June 30\, 2023. \nAdditionally\, Ms. Gibbs served as the editor of The Worker\, the missionary and educational quarterly magazine of the Progressive National Baptist Convention\, currently estimated with 2.5 million members world-wide\, and upon special invitation from the magazine\, was one of the former editors to write an article for the magazine’s 75th anniversary special edition. Ms. Gibbs holds a bachelor’s degree in English\, a master’s degree in Human Resources Management and Development\, and a number of professional certifications. She lives in Alexandria\, Virginia\, where she enjoys being active in community service by serving in church leadership positions\, on community and homeowners association committees\, and running in community 5k races for a variety of charitable causes including cancer\, fitness for life\, and veterans’ issues. \nAbout Robert Ball\, MD\, MPH\, FACP \nDr. Ball is a 7th generation Charleston born physician with a specialized career in Internal Medicine\, Infectious Diseases\, and Public Health that spans nearly a half-century of academic and private practice\, consulting\, teaching\, and publishing. After completing an Infectious Disease Fellowship at the Medical University of SC (MUSC)\, Dr. Ball continued in academia while in private practice for a decade before transitioning into Public Health with the SC Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) as SC’s Infectious Disease Public Health Consultant while earning his Masters in Public Health. Credited with diagnosing SC’s first cases of AIDS\, Dr. Ball also served as the Medical Director of SC’s AIDS/ STD Division and creator\, then Director of the Ryan White AIDS Program in 1989. \nAfter two decades with DHEC in Columbia\, Dr. Ball returned to Charleston to serve as Medical Director of several Regions and retired from SC DHEC after about three decades. He has published more than 30 medical articles and chapters for three medical textbooks\, the latest in the American Society of Microbiology textbook on Pandemic Planning just released in May 2024. Dr. Ball served on the faculty of the University of SC School of Public Health and School of Medicine and has received numerous state\, regional\, and national awards for teaching. \nHaving failed retiring completely\, Dr. Ball still serves as a MUSC Assistant Adjunct Professor in Public Health and Infectious Diseases. He is also the Senior Warden and Treasurer of St. John’s Parish Berkeley/Strawberry Chapel\, his family’s historic colonial country Chapel and is actively involved in Charleston and Berkeley County historic preservation\, especially now with Berkeley County’s Sacred Corridor. He is married to Betty Gore\, RN\, MSN\, also retired from SC DHEC and is still active in the Charleston community. Both sing in the choir at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church and frequently usher at Spoleto\, Gaillard Center\, & other community events in their “spare time”. \nAbout Father Joe Tedesco \nFather Tedesco was born and raised in Philadelphia\, PA. He attended parochial schools through elementary and High School. Graduated with a BA degree in Theology from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh Penna. Father Tedesco is a Roman Catholic Diocesan Priest and for 28 years ministered in the Diocese of Trenton New Jersey. During those years he held many positions including Pastor of various Parishes and Co-Director of the two spiritual centers: Upper Room Spiritual Center and Francis House of Prayer. Father Tedesco is the liaison for Charismatic Renewal in the Diocese\, as well as the Director of Research and Planning and Chairman of the Diocesan Expansion Commission. Entering Mepkin Abbey in 2008\, he celebrated his Solemn Profession in 2014 and was appointed Superior of the Mepkin Community in 2018. \nAbout John Hildreth \nJohn Hildreth is the current Chair of the Board for Preservation South Carolina\, the state’s only statewide nonprofit historic preservation organization. Hildreth retired from the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 2020 as a Senior Advisor for Special Projects. \nHildreth began his career as director of the Preservation Resource Center at the Preservation Society of Charleston in 1983. In 1986\, he joined the National Trust for Historic Preservation as a field representative. Over the next 34 years\, he served as director of the southern regional office\, vice president for eastern regional field services\, and vice president for preservation partnerships. During his tenure at the National Trust Hildreth formed and oversaw the national Rosenwald School Initiative\, a 16-year effort that raised awareness and brought significant resources to the preservation of these often overlooked treasures. He also represented the National Trust in the establishment and operation of the National Fund for Sacred Places\, a grant fund for historic houses of worship jointly administered by the National Trust and the Philadelphia-based Partners for Sacred Places.

SUMMARY:The Caravaggio Syndrome // Italian Literature\, Art and History Converge
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with the Nuovo Cinema Italiano Film Festival\, and in anticipation of its return to Charleston this November\, we are pleased to host St. Lawrence University Professor Alessandro Giardino for a creatively-charged discussion on his debut novel The Caravaggio Syndrome moderated by College of Charleston Professor Rebekah T. Compton. Staying true to his Italian heritage and academic background\, Giardino’s multi-dimensional narrative follows a student-teacher pair on their journey to research the Italian masterpiece The Seven Works of Mercy by painter Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio. Using elements from a number of cultures\, he pushes the mold of contemporary literature while also incorporating the academic teachings of Caravaggio’s style and the signature impact of his work in the history of Baroque art. \nIf you are unable to attend the event\, but would like to purchase one or more signed copies\, please visit Buxton Books here. \nAbout the Book \nLeyla is a headstrong Brooklyn-born art historian at a prestigious upstate New York college. When she meets feckless young computer technician Pablo at a party\, she quickly becomes pregnant with his child. There’s only one problem: she can’t stand him. And one more problem: her student Michael wants Pablo for himself. Amid this love triangle\, the objects of Leyla and Michael’s study take on a life of their own. Trying to learn more about Caravaggio’s masterpiece The Seven Works of Mercy\, they pore over the journal and prison writings of maverick 17th-century utopian philosopher Tommaso Campanella\, which\, as if by enchantment\, transport them back four centuries to Naples. And while the past and present miraculously converge\, Leyla\, Michael\, and Tommaso embark on a voyage of self-discovery in search of a new life. \nAbout Alessandro Giardino \nAlessandro Giardino is Co-Chair and Associate Professor of World Languages\, Cultures & Media at Saint Lawrence University. Born in Naples\, he studied at the University of Bologna\, UC Berkeley\, and McGill University. He has written extensively about Caravaggio’s cultural circles\, as well as Italian and French literature. The Caravaggio Syndrome is his first novel. After several printings in Italy\, the novel has been translated for English-speaking readers around the world. \nAbout Rebekah Compton \nRebekah Compton is Associate Professor of Renaissance and Baroque Art History at the College of Charleston\, South Carolina. SUMMARY:Dreams\, Lies and Love Songs - An Evening of Poetry and Song
DESCRIPTION:How might poetry evolve through song? Boston-based composer and pianist Scott Wheeler\, Pulitzer winner Megan Marshall\, and soprano singer and actress Sarah Chalfy will explore this topic through a captivating and varied program that transforms traditional ideals of American poetry (think Emily Dickinson to present day) through Scott Wheeler’s artistic composition. This program is made possible through the connections of friend and benefactor Helen Powell who pledged to bring this program to the Library Society after its success last December at the Boston Athenaeum\, with the similar goal of bringing together two audiences that rarely overlap – attendees of modern classical concerts and those of poetry readings. In its first iteration\, the event was the first time the singers heard the poets read\, and the first time the poets heard their works in song. We look forward to seeing you for this unique\, surprising and perhaps revelatory affair. \nAbout Scott Wheeler: \nScott Wheeler has written several operas\, as well as music for orchestra\, chamber ensembles and solo voice. Performers of his work include Gil Shaham\, Kent Nagano\, Gil Rose\, Renee Fleming and Susanna Phillips. Scott’s music can be heard on New World\, Naxos\, Bridge\, and BMOP Sound. Born in Washington DC\, Scott grew up various cities in the American midwest and east\, then studied at Amherst College\, New England Conservatory\, and Brandeis. His principal teachers were Lewis Spratlan\, Arthur Berger and Virgil Thomson\, along with studies at Dartington with Peter Maxwell Davies and Tanglewood with Olivier Messiaen. Scott is Professor Emeritus at Emerson College in Boston\, where he co-teaches Poetry and Song. Learn more about Scott at www.scottwheeler.org. \nAbout Megan Marshall: \nMegan Marshall is the Pulitzer Prize-winning biographer of the lives of Margaret Fuller\, the Peabody sisters\, and Elizabeth Bishop\, with whom she studied verse-writing in college. Her biographies have received the Francis Parkman Prize\, the Mark Lynton History Prize\, and the Massachusetts Book Award. She edited the posthumous collection of her partner Scott Harney’s poetry\, The Blood of San Gennaro (2020)\, and her essay collection\, After Lives: On Biography and the Mysteries of the Human Heart\, will be published in February 2025. Marshall is the Charles Wesley Emerson College Professor at Emerson College and a past president of the Society of American Historians. Learn more about Megan at https://meganmarshallauthor.com/. \nAbout Sarah Chalfy: \nSarah Chalfy has collaborated with and premiered works by many of today’s leading composers\, including Scott Wheeler\, Michael Gordon\, David T. SUMMARY:The Sinking of the Andrea Doria - A Firsthand Account
DESCRIPTION:The RMS Titanic was not the only luxury transatlantic ocean liner to suggest ‘largest\, fastest\, safest… and yes\, unsinkable’. The SS Andrea Doria was a flagship of the Italian Line (Società di navigazione Italia) put into service in 1953\, only to face a similar fate of the Titanic just 3 years later. The NYC-bound ship collided with another\, the Stockholm\, off the coast of Nantucket\, and while it immediately started to take on water\, it stayed afloat for 11 hours on its side. This fortune along with the calm\, appropriate behavior of the crew\, improvements in communications\, and the rapid response of other ships culminated in a remarkably successful rescue of 1\,660 of the 1\,706 passengers and crew\, thus averting the scale of tragedy from that of the Titanic in 1912. Join us in this not-to-be-missed audience with Julia Hansen\, a passenger aboard the Andrea Doria in 1956\, to hear first hand about this incredible survival story and the dynamic life and pursuits she’s led since. \nAbout the Andrea Doria \nMeasuring some 697 feet (212 meters) in length\, it could carry approximately 1\,240 passengers and 560 crew members. The liner was noted for its luxuries\, which included three outdoor swimming pools and numerous works of art. In addition\, the ship was equipped with notable safety features\, such as 11 watertight compartments as well as radar\, which was then a relatively new technology. On January 14\, 1953\, the Andrea Doria set sail on its maiden voyage\, traveling from Genoa\, Italy\, to New York City. The liner proved highly popular and subsequently made numerous other Atlantic crossings. \nThe Italian passenger liner that sank on July 25–26\, 1956\, after colliding with the Stockholm off the coast of Nantucket in the Atlantic Ocean. The maritime disaster resulted in the deaths of 51 people—46 from the Andrea Doria and 5 from the Stockholm. \nAbout Julia Hansen \nJulia Hansen survived the famous shipwreck of the transatlantic passenger vessel\, Andrea Doria\, in 1956. Julia was originally on Wall Street. Ultimately\, she was able to pursue her passion for theater as head of the Drama League of NY where she founded the Directors Project. Alumni include such outstanding directors as Christopher Ashley\, Artistic Director of the La Jolla Playhouse\, James Bundy\, Dean of the Yale School of Drama and Artistic Director of the Yale Repertory Theater\, and Diane Paulus\, Artistic Director of the American Repertory Theater at Harvard University. Next\, she founded Theater Masters to help emerging playwrights. Her most recent program\, JNS Theater for Social Change\, uses playwriting to look at current critical topics. Students learn how to write a short play\, thereby\, having to defend more than one side of an issue to make it compelling. This program presently is at The University of Nebraska and Ohio State University. A Vassar graduate\, Julia loves being in Aspen\, New York\, London\, Nantucket and Palm Beach. She has a global web of friends from her far-reaching interests and activities therein\, most notably the theatre. She has spoken at The Society for the Four Arts in Palm Beach\, the English Speaking Union in New Orleans\, the Somerset Club in Boston\, The Colony Club in New York and the Arts Club in Chicago.

SUMMARY:"Putin's World"\, with The World Affairs Council
DESCRIPTION:Foreign Policy has been a welcomed addition to our diverse programming\, and this discussion could not be better timed. Along with the World Affairs Council of Charleston and Buxton Books\, we are honored for the opportunity to host renowned diplomacy expert Angela Stent\, for insights into the Russian President’s approach to international relations and her incisive exploration of ‘how and why Russia has returned to the world stage. As the Senior Advisor to the Center for Eurasian\, Russian\, and East European Studies\, and Professor Emerita of Government and Foreign Service at Georgetown University\, her book\, Putin’s World\, uniquely examines the country’s turbulent past and the Russians’ understanding of their position on the global stage and their ambitions. Originally published in 2019\, the revised edition out last year now also includes a new chapter solely dedicated to the war in Ukraine. \n“Informed by its author’s distinguished career in government and academia\, this account of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s worldview provides an important window into one of the key geopolitical challenges of our time. Casual observers and seasoned experts will benefit from Dr. Stent’s brilliant exploration of Putin’s strategy and its disturbing implications for the West.” ―Former Secretary of State Madeleine K. Albright \nIf you are unable to attend the event\, but would like to purchase one or more signed copies\, please visit Buxton Books here. \nAbout the Book \n\n\nHow did Russia manage to emerge resurgent on the world stage and play a weak hand so effectively? Is it because Putin is a brilliant strategist? Or has Russia stepped into a vacuum created by the West’s distraction with its own domestic problems and US ambivalence about whether it still wants to act as a superpower? Putin’s World examines the country’s conviction that the West has tried to deny them a seat at the table of great powers since the USSR collapsed. This book looks at Russia’s key relationships—its downward spiral with the United States\, Europe\, and NATO; its ties to China\, Japan\, the Middle East; and with its neighbors\, particularly the fraught relationship with Ukraine. Putin’s World will help Americans understand how and why the post-Cold War era has given way to a new\, more dangerous world\, one in which Russia poses a challenge to the United States in every corner of the globe—and one in which Russia has become a toxic and divisive subject in US politics. \n\n\nAbout Angela Stent \nAngela Stent is Senior Adviser to the Center for Eurasian\, Russian\, and East European Studies and Professor Emerita of Government and Foreign Service at Georgetown University. She is also a fellow at the Brookings Institution and a senior advisor to the United States Institute of Peace. She was a member of the senior advisory panel for NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander in Europe for Admiral James Stavridis and General Philip Breedlove. From 2004 to 2006\, she served as National Intelligence Officer for Russia and Eurasia at the National Intelligence Council. She is the author of The Limits of Partnership: US-Russian Relations in the Twenty-First Century\, for which she won the American Academy of Diplomacy’s Douglas Dillon prize for the best book on the practice of American diplomacy. Stent’s primary research focus is Russian foreign policy\, with special emphasis on the triangular U.S-Europe-Russia relationship. Her latest book is Putin’s World: Russia Against the West and With the Rest (2019\, updated paperback 2023)\, for which she won the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy’s prize for the best book on U.S-Russian Relations. Dr. Stent received her B.A. from Cambridge University\, her MSc. with distinction from the London School of Economics and Political Science and her M.A. and PhD. from Harvard University. \nAbout The World Affairs Council \nThe World Affairs Council of Charleston (WACC)\, formerly the Charleston Foreign Affairs Forum\, was founded in the early 1980s as a nonprofit\, nonpartisan organization. Membership represents a cross-section of individuals from business\, education\, and civic backgrounds. Through thought-provoking presentations and discussions\, participants of all ages and backgrounds are invited to challenge and enhance their understanding of the world. WACC is a 501(c)(3) organization and is a member of the World Affairs Councils of America\, a network of 93 independent\, nonpartisan councils across 40 states.

Whether you’ve finished the book\, are thinking about starting it\, or couldn’t make it past the halfway point\, please join us. \nRSVP is required via the form below so that we can plan for seating. \nPlease note that the authors of our selections ARE NOT in attendance. \nAbout Book Club \nOffered a few times a year\, the CLS Book Club seeks to explore a wide range of topics\, authors and diversity within its book selections. Under this objective\, Book Club also offers space for conversation\, perspectives and discourse. For The Demon of Unrest\, Book Club’s resident Erik Larson completist\, the dynamic Mike Gottlieb\, will present a through exploration of the book after which the floor will open to questions and discussion. \nAbout the Book \n\n\n\n\n\nOn November 6\, 1860\, Abraham Lincoln became the fluky victor in a tight race for president. The country was bitterly at odds; Southern extremists were moving ever closer to destroying the Union\, with one state after another seceding and Lincoln powerless to stop them. Slavery fueled the conflict\, but somehow the passions of North and South came to focus on a lonely federal fortress in Charleston Harbor: Fort Sumter. Master storyteller Erik Larson offers a gripping account of the chaotic months between Lincoln’s election and the Confederacy’s shelling of Sumter—a period marked by tragic errors and miscommunications\, enflamed egos and craven ambitions\, personal tragedies and betrayals. Lincoln himself wrote that the trials of these five months were “so great that\, could I have anticipated them\, I would not have believed it possible to survive them.”At the heart of this suspense-filled narrative are Major Robert Anderson\, Sumter’s commander and a former slave owner sympathetic to the South but loyal to the Union; Edmund Ruffin\, a vain and bloodthirsty radical who stirs secessionist ardor at every opportunity; and Mary Boykin Chesnut\, wife of a prominent planter\, conflicted over both marriage and slavery and seeing parallels between them. In the middle of it all is the overwhelmed Lincoln\, battling with his duplicitous Secretary of State\, William Seward\, as he tries desperately to avert a war that he fears is inevitable—one that will eventually kill 750\,000 Americans. Drawing on diaries\, secret communiques\, slave ledgers\, and plantation records\, Larson gives us a political horror story that captures the forces that led America to the brink—a dark reminder that we often don’t see a cataclysm coming until it’s too late. \n\n\n\n\n\nFor a copy of the book\, check out our catalog here\, or shop local at Buxton Books.

SUMMARY:CLS Wine Club // Burgundy
DESCRIPTION:After emerging from a lively conversation in our Fellows Lounge\, CLS Wine Club has been welcomed on repeat – this Fall marking 2 years since its first. During the Fall installment\, reds are the category\, this time Burgundy\, with insights from our founding aficionados\, Jerry Mitchell and Tim Cantopher\, to guide the selections and overall theme. Their learned preferences and curiosities from storied outings and clubs centered around the complexities of wine coupled with a our partner Monarch Wines\, allow just the right blend of lesser known vineyards\, small-production varietals with a bit of wit and wisdom as well. \nPlease Note: These wines are available in limited and time-sensitive quantities\, therefore\, we must secure them ahead of time. For this reason\, your admission also includes one of each of the four bottles to take home. (Avg $35/bottle) For those who come as a couple\, there is an option for two people and four bottles. Seating is limited in order to host a conversation-style wine tasting where the experts will walk us through four specifically chosen bottles and dissect the nuance associated with each. Part of participating in the wine club is the opportunity to purchase wines that would otherwise not be available at retail. \nAbout Monarch and Justin Coleman \nYears of selecting wines for some of NYC’s favorite spots (Balthazar\, Commerce\, Morandi\, The Mark) have helped Justin (owner and propietor of Monarch Wines) cultivate strong relationships with both European and American winemakers\, importers\, and distributors. From lugging bottles to creating beverage programs\, to managing operations\, Justin has worked with some of the most exalted names in the business. Seeking a slower pace of life for his young family at the time (wife\, Sarah\, and eldest daughter\, Fia)\, Justin headed south to Charleston in 2013\, landing at The Ordinary as General Manager. At The Ordinary\, Justin fostered an appreciation for\, and understanding of\, the community in Charleston. Monarch Wine Merchants opened in 2017\, filling a void in the market at the time for a true neighborhood wine shop\, focused on wine and only wine. Delivering the highest level of customer service has become a hallmark of the shop. Justin is forever passionate about keeping the shelves well-stocked at the brick and mortar\, while also sourcing highly allocated wines for both local clients and those further afield. \nThere are two ticket options available: \n*Single $285 // $145 ticket price + $140 wine price (4 bottles to take home) \n*Couple $430 // $290 ticket price + $140 wine price (4 bottles to take home) \nFellows members will have first option for securing seats.

SUMMARY:275th Milestones Shaping the Peninsula
DESCRIPTION:As the second oldest membership library in the United States dating to 1748\, it is quite special to have recently celebrated 275 years of continuous operations\, and even more special to have the opportunity to highlight another this year. Founded in 1749\, KKBE (Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim — Holy Congregation House of God) is among the oldest Jewish Congregations in this country and its sanctuary is the oldest synagogue building in continual use in the USA. The congregation is also celebrating the 200th anniversary of the birth of Reform Judaism in America\, launched by its members in 1824. In celebration of this monumental milestone\, join us to honor the legacy and impact of Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim on 275 years of history\, culture on the Peninsula for almost three centuries. \nAttendance is Free with RSVP\, Please register below. \nAbout KKBE \nFounded in 1749\, The KKBE or Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim\, is known as the birthplace of American Reform Judaism and holds a rich heritage in which all American Jews can take pride. Charleston was founded in 1670\, with the earliest known reference to a Jew in the English settlement dated 1695. Soon after many others followed\, attracted by the civil and religious liberty of South Carolina and the ample economic opportunity of the colony. The group had grown significantly by 1749 to organize the present congregation\, Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim\, followed fifteen years later with the establishment of the now historic Coming Street Cemetery\, the oldest surviving Jewish burial ground in the South. \nWhen George Washington became President of the United States of America\, there were six Jewish congregations in the new American Republic. Three were located in Northern cities: Newport\, Rhode Island’s Yeshuat Israel (Touro)\, New York’s Shearith Israel\, and Philadelphia’s Michveh Israel. Three were located in the South: Richmond\, Virginia’s Beth Shalome\, Savannah\, Georgia’s Mickve Israel\, and Charleston’s own Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim. At first\, prayers were recited in private quarters and\, from 1775\, in an improvised synagogue adjacent to the present-day grounds. In 1792\, construction of the largest and most impressive synagogue in the United States commenced\, and it was dedicated just two years later. A member of the visiting Lafayette’s entourage is reported to have described the building as “spacious and elegant.” This handsome\, cupolated Georgian synagogue was destroyed in the great Charleston fire of 1838 and replaced in 1840 by the structure in use today. The colonnaded building was dedicated in early 1841\, and is often described as one of the country’s finest examples of Greek Revival architecture. On this occasion\, KKBE’s Reverend Gustavus Poznanski was moved to say\, “This synagogue is our Temple\, this city our Jerusalem\, and this happy land our Palestine.
