SUMMARY:Speaker Series: Jonathan O’Dell
DESCRIPTION:Jonathan Odell is a novelist\, short story writer\, essayist\, speaker and memoirist. His work appears in anthologies\, national periodicals\, newspapers\, and a soon to be published volume of essays about growing up in Mississippi. He has also done extensive work in organizations in the area of racial inclusion.\nJonathan now makes his home in Minnesota\, but stays long enough each year with his Mississippi family to keep his citizenship papers up to date. \nMiss Hazel and the Rosa Parks League is the  story of two mothers\, Hazel and Vida\, in pre-Civil Rights Mississippi\, the author’s home state. In the beginning these women have little in common except for a deep and abiding loathing for one another. Like Jonathan’s other novels\, this is a tale of unlikely of friendships in unlikely times\, told from the heart.

SUMMARY:Speaker Series: Hunter Kennedy
DESCRIPTION:The Minus Times by Hunter Kennedy \nBegun as an open letter to strangers and fellow misfits\, The Minus Times grew to become a hand-typed literary magazine that showcased the next generation of American fiction. Contributors include Sam Lipsyte\, David Berman\, Patrick DeWitt\, and Wells Tower\, with illustrations by David Eggers and Brad Neely as well as interviews with Dan Clowes\, Barry Hannah\, and a yet-to-be-famous Stephen Colbert. With sly humor and striking illustrations\, The Minus Times has earned a fervent following as much for its lack of literary pretension as its sporadic appearances on the newsstand. All thirty of the nearly-impossible-to-find issues of this improvised literary almanac are now assembled for the first time\, typos and all.

SUMMARY:NOT By the Book: John Cowan
DESCRIPTION:To RSVP for this class\, please call (843) 723-9912 or email mstokenberry@charlestonlibrarysociety.org\, there is no charge for this event. \nCanada’s War of Independence\, 1914-1918 \nThe United States of America was born in a successful\, if slightly reluctant\, revolutionary war. The complete transition from colonial status to independence was a crucible of fire that lasted less than a decade. For Canada\, its independence from Britain is usually explained as gradual\, taking place over more than a century. This is probably a myth. \nCanada’s war of independence was the First World War\, the so-called Great War. Unlike the USA\, Canada’s war of independence was not fought against the entity from which it became independent\, but alongside it. Canada started the war as a colony of the UK and ended it as an ally. \nAt the outbreak of the war\, Canada declared war on no-one. Britain did it for all of the Empire. The internally self-governing colony called Canada merely got to decide how it would react to being at war. \nBut by 1919 Canada had a seat at the negotiations for the Treaty of Versailles\, a seat in the League of Nations\, and the right to be elected to the League Council. Effectively\, Canada was a nation state\, and somehow four and a half years had done what 47 earlier years had not. Canada had acted like a nation\, and so came out of the Great War as a nation\, with its own foreign policy and defence policy\, and its own representatives abroad. How did this happen? What was Canada like before the war\, and after it? How did it affect relations with the USA? \nThis story will be told over a morning in a combination of lectures and Q&A lasting from 9:30 until 12:30\, with a coffee break in the middle. The speaker will be Dr. John Scott Cowan\, who has formerly done two similar whole morning sessions for the CLS\, one on piracy and terrorism\, and the other on the War of 1812. \nJohn Scott Cowan spent 24 years at the University of Ottawa as professor\, chair of physiology\, and then vice-president. He was vice-principal at Queen’s University before becoming principal of the Royal Military College of Canada (the university of the armed forces in Canada) from 1999 to 2008. He has also worked extensively in labour relations\, and has flown some 64 aircraft types. Research in physiology co-existed with defence issues\, starting with a 1963 monograph on defence policy. Recently he has focussed on asymmetric threats\, piracy\, the characteristics of the profession of arms\, and defence education. He was president of the CDA Institute 2008-2012\, and chair of the Defence Science Advisory Board of Canada 2010-2013. He is the Honorary Colonel of the Princess of Wales’ Own Regiment. He has been a member of the CLS since 2008.

SUMMARY:Speaker Series: Susan Hull Walker
DESCRIPTION:Textiles as Text \nSusan Hull Walker\, who founded ibu in 2013\, studied World Religions at Harvard Divinity School and served for eighteen years as a minister in Maine\, San Francisco\, and Charleston\, SC.  Returning to school to study Fiber Arts\, she learned to weave and speak in the language of cloth. It opened her eyes to the very thing she had been looking for in her previous work – a woman’s way of recording her mind and soul. What she didn’t find in parchment and page\, she found in textiles. A woman’s text. \nAs a weaver\, Susan began to work with women’s cooperatives around the world to preserve the skills and stories of their region. Her designs showcase the sumptuous beauty of the world’s textiles for women who want to wear the colors of many tribes\, and in them\, belong to what is bold and strong\, eruptive and free. \nReception to follow at ibu- 183 King Street\, second floor \nTo RSVP to this event\, please call (843) 723-9912 or email mstokenberry@charlestonlibrarysociety.org

In his recent book\, The Fight for Freedom: A Memoir of My Years in the Civil Rights Movement\, he shares his experiences in some of the hot spots of that day\, such as Selma\, Birmingham\, and Mississippi. A passionate and dedicated soldier\, Reynolds was jailed more than twenty times and beaten on a number of occasions as he went through some of the toughest battles of the Movement and played a role in awakening the national conscience and redeeming the soul of America. \nReynolds is an ordained American Baptist minister and served as a pastor in Rhode Island for twelve years. SUMMARY:American Debut of Bernard Cornwell’s Best Selling Book: Waterloo
DESCRIPTION:American Debut \nBernard Cornwell’s best-selling \nbook WATERLOO \n\nTalk followed by book-signing and reception \nMembers:  $10 \nNon-Members $15 \nFor tickets\, please click here or call (843) 723-9912 \nWaterloo: The True Story of Four Days\, Three Armies and Three Battles \nby Bernard Cornwell \n\n ‘Some battles change nothing. Waterloo changed almost everything.’ \nBestselling author Bernard Cornwell is celebrated for his ability to bring history to life. Here\, in his first work of non-fiction\, he has written the true story of the epic battle of Waterloo – a momentous turning point in European history – a tale of one campaign\, four days and three armies. \nHe focuses on what it was like to be fighting in that long battle\, whether officer or private\, whether British\, Prussian or French; he makes you feel you are present at the scene. The combination of his vivid\, gripping style and detailed historical research make this\, his first non-fiction book\, the number one book for the upcoming 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo. \nIt is a magnificent story. There was heroism on both sides\, tragedy too and much misery. Bernard Cornwell brings those combatants back to life\, using their memories to recreate what it must have been like to fight in one of the most ghastly battles of history. It was given extra piquancy because all of Europe reckoned that the two greatest soldiers of the age were Napoleon and Wellington\, yet the two had never faced each other in battle. Both were acutely aware of that\, and aware that history would judge them by the result. In the end it was a victory for Wellington\, but when he saw the casualty lists he wept openly. ‘I pray to God\,’ he said\, ‘I have fought my last battle.’ He had\, and it is a story for the ages.

SUMMARY:Speaker Series: Firoozeh Dumas
DESCRIPTION:The Charleston Library Society invites you to join us for a lecture and book signing with Firoozeh Dumas.  To RSVP to this event\, please call (843) 723-9912 or email mstokenberry@charlestonlibrarysociety.org \nNew York Times Bestselling Author of Funny in Farsi: \nA Memoir of Growing Up Iranian in America and Laughing Without an Accent \nFiroozeh Dumas was born in Abadan\, Iran and\, in the 1970’s\, moved to Southern California with her family. She later attended UC Berkeley where she met and married a Frenchman. \nFiroozeh grew up listening to her father\, a former Fulbright Scholar\, recount the many colorful stories of his life in both Iran and America. In 2001\, with no prior writing experience\, Firoozeh decided to write her stories as a gift for her children. Funny in Farsi was on the San Francisco Chronicle\, Los Angeles Times\, and New York Times bestseller lists and was a finalist for the PEN/USA award in 2004 and a finalist in 2005 for an Audie Award for best audio book.  (She lost to Bob Dylan.)  She was also a finalist for the prestigious Thurber Prize for American Humor (she lost to Jon Stewart)\, and is the first Middle Eastern woman ever to be considered for this honor. \nCritics and readers of all ages have loved her stories. Jimmy Carter called Funny in Farsi “A humorous and introspective chronicle of a life filled with love—of family\, country and heritage.” \nOver a dozen community reading programs have used Firoozeh’s books for their citywide reads\, all with great success. Firoozeh’s stories appeal to all ages and backgrounds and her humor resonates with a wide audience. In addition\, Funny in Farsi has become part of the curriculum in junior highs\, high schools and colleges around the country and is now on the California Recommended Reading List for grades 6 – 12. Educators have found that Firoozeh’s books are a gateway to many conversations\, including shared humanity\, immigration\, language\, family and identity. Firoozeh has spoken at educational conferences throughout the United States and in Europe and was awarded the Spirit of America Award in 2008 by the National Council of Social Studies. Former recipients of this award include Jimmy Carter\, Rosa Parks and Mr. Rogers. You may have heard Firoozeh’s commentaries on NPR or read one of her pieces in the Los Angeles Times\, the New York Times\, the Wall Street Journal\, San Francisco Chronicle Magazine\, Gourmet\, Good Housekeeping or Lifetime Magazine. \nIn April 2005\, Firoozeh’s one-woman show\, “Laughing Without an Accent” opened in Northern California to sold out audiences at Theatreworks in Mountain View\, California. Firoozeh incorporates much of what she learned from her one-woman show in her speeches\, adding yet another layer of entertainment to her thought-provoking\, yet humorous talks. \nFor the past eight years\, Firoozeh has traveled the country reminding us that our commonalities far outweigh our differences. Her travels have taken her throughout rural America\, from the East Coast to the West Coast\, from Harvard University to UCLA and to Europe. Everywhere she has gone\, audiences have embraced her message of shared humanity while laughing at her humorous tales. \nFiroozeh Dumas’s second memoir\, entitled Laughing without an Accent\, was published in May 2008. Alexander McCall Smith had this to say\, “These stories\, like everything Firoozeh Dumas writes\, are charming\, highly amusing vignettes of family life. Dumas is one of those rare people–a naturally gifted storyteller.” \n Firoozeh is currently working on a “tween” novel due from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt in Spring 2015. The story contains no vampires.

SUMMARY:Pat Conroy and the Story River Authors
DESCRIPTION:Join Pat Conroy and a number of his Story River Authors including Maggie Schein\, John Lane and Bernie Schein. \nFor tickets\, please click here or call (843) 723-9912 \n$10 members\, $15 nonmembers \nMaggie Schein- Lost Cantos of the Orobourous Caves \nA collection of fables in the literary tradition of Italo Calvino (if he were a Taoist seeker)\, Lost Cantos of the Ouroboros Caves brings together medicine men\, monks\, immortals\, witches\, seekers\, souls in various stages of their cycles in and out of lived-life\, and the occasional talking animal\, all searching for the meaning of it all and each other. Here\, the well\, the prairie\, the mountains (the Ouroboros mountains\, of course)\, the pond over which a swan swims continuously as she keeps vigil for the newly dead; each fable is a meditation on love\, death\, growth\, pain\, identity\, self\, spirit\, and the natural world\, as seen from the perspectives of the primal\, the celestial\, or the spiritual. Fragile and beautifully strong\, the Lost Cantos are tales and mythology for anyone seeking stories for a larger life. \nJohn Lane- Fate Moreland’s Widow \nOn a placid Blue Ridge mountain lake on Labor Day Weekend in 1935\, three locals sightseeing in an overloaded boat drown\, and the cotton mill scion who owns the lake is indicted for their murders. Decades later Ben Crocker–witness to and reluctant participant in the aftermath of this long-forgotten tragedy–is drawn once more into the morally ambiguous world of mill fortunes and foothills justice.\nThe son of mill workers in Carlton\, South Carolina\, Crocker is caught between competing loyalties to his family and future. Crocker wanted more than a rough-hewn life on a factory floor\, so he studied accounting at the local textile institute and was hired as bookkeeper to the owner\, George McCane\, a man as burdened by his familial ties as Crocker and even less prepared for the authority of his mantel.\nMcCane’s decision to renovate the Carlton Mill and lay off families connected to the Uprising of ’34\, one of the largest labor strikes in U.S. history\, puts Crocker in the ill-fitting position as his boss’s enforcer. Days after the evictions\, the surprise indictment lands McCane in a North Carolina mountain jail and sinks Crocker even deeper into the escalating tensions between mill workers and the owners.\nWhile traversing mountain communities in McCane’s defense\, Crocker must also manage the forced renovation of the Carlton Mill\, negotiate with labor organizers led by local hero Olin Campbell\, collaborate with McCane’s besotted brother\, Angus\, and fend off his father’s and wife’s skepticism of his own social aspirations. Hanging distractingly over Crocker’s upended life is his burgeoning infatuation with Novie Moreland–the young widow of one of those McCane is accused of killing. Though unrequited\, Croker’s relationship with Novie proves to be a beacon of hope amid the shadows of political and social machinations in the darkest chapter in his long life.\nAs the union retaliates and the McCane murder trial is settled\, it is uncertain who the winners and losers have been in this generational clash of workers and owners\, labor and capital\, those tied to the land and its people and those who exploit both. When Crocker looks back from 1988 at these two crucial years in his life in the mid-1930s\, he is left to wonder if he did right by himself and those closest to him. Against all better judgment\, Crocker knows he must seek out Novie Moreland once more if he is ever to find closure with the past. \nBernie Schein- Famous All Over Town \nNovelist Walker Percy once said that the only remaining unexplored territory in southern literature was the Jewish southerner. Famous all over Town\, the first novel from southern storyteller Bernie Schein\, stakes a claim on Percy’s unexplored terrain with a comically candid multigenerational account of two Jews\, a lowcountry native and a northern transplant\, at the epicenter of momentous events in the sleepy southern coastal hamlet of Somerset\, a fictitious stand-in for Schein’s native Beaufort\, South Carolina.

SUMMARY:Speaker Series: Peg Eastman
DESCRIPTION:Speaker Series: Peg Eastman- St. Philip’s Church of Charleston\, An Early History of the Oldest Parish in South Carolina \nTo RSVP- please email mstokenberry@charlestonlibrarysociety.org or call (843) 723-9912 \nSt. Philip’s Church was commissioned shortly after the Carolina colony was founded in 1670.  Because the Church of England was the established Church\, St. Philip’s tried to meet the spiritual needs of the early settlers and also was responsible for oversight of elections\, education and social services in everything from healthcare to disaster relief.  St. Philip’s churchwardens and vestry enforced morality laws and levied taxes.  The colony’s first state funeral- that of Governor Robert Johnson- took place in the church\, as did that of the controversial\, one-time vice president\, Senator John C. Calhoun.  Buried in the churchyard are Founding Fathers\, pirate hunters\, war heroes\, statesmen and even the unfortunate victim of a sensational murder.  This book recounts the early years of St. Philip’s Church\, the people who walked its aisles and some of the early religious conflicts that shook the community.  Authors Dorothy Middleton Anderson and Margaret Middleton Rivers Eastman outline the fascinating history of the first church in the new colony.
