SUMMARY:John Lennon’s Lawyer on the Man\, the Mafia\, and the Biggest Trial You’ve Never Heard About
DESCRIPTION:While John Lennon retreated into private life in 1975\, he also fought a major legal battle that flew under the public radar. Mafia-connected Morris Levy\, owner of Roulette Records\, released Roots\, an unauthorized version of a rock ’n’ roll oldies album John had been producing. Levy claimed the former Beatle had verbally agreed to market Roots via TV. The quick release of John Lennon Rock ’n’ Roll\, the official album\, resulted in two Levy lawsuits against John—and John’s counterclaims against Levy. \nThe ensuing high-stakes drama—both in and out of the courtroom—spanned the better part of two years and is the subject of Lennon attorney Jay Bergen’s upcoming discussion on May 4. Drawing from stories shared in his 2022 book\, Lennon\, the Mobster & the Lawyer—The Untold Story\, as well as archival documents and multimedia materials\, Bergen will tell the intimate story of how he worked closely with John to rebut Levy’s specious claims\, and what it was like getting to know the man behind the myth. It also paints a detailed personal portrait of John and his world from 1975 to 1977\, when he would soon welcome a new son and go into happy seclusion as a father and husband. \nAbout Jay Bergen:\nJay Bergen was a trial lawyer in New York City for forty-five years. He has handled antitrust\, securities\, entertainment\, and copyright/trademark cases. While Jay presented as a buttoned-down NYC trial lawyer\, deep down he was a rock ’n’ roller from his high school days. He and John Lennon hit it off right from the day they first met\, February 3\, 1975. While Jay was awed to become John’s trusted advisor in the Morris Levy litigation\, he was able to treat John Lennon as “just another client” – and that’s the way Jay worked with him preparing for the January 1976 trial. The two became friends and that relationship opened Jay to living his life the way he wanted to\, rather than the way others wanted. Through more than 40 years and five home moves\, Jay preserved the entire trial transcript\, exhibits\, and related documents in six bankers boxes. The legal records were an integral part of his memories and John and Jay’s friendship\, and will serve alongside other contemporaneous artifacts as context for Jay’s presentation.

After serving as features editor of National Parks Magazine\, she moved to rural North Carolina\, working as a freelance writer with a column interviewing nature photographers and publishing articles in Garden & Gun\, American Land Forum\, Wildlife in North Carolina\, Our State Magazine\, and North Carolina Literary Review. As copyediting chief for Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill\, she encountered the work of contemporary Southern writers such as Jill McCorkle\, Kaye Gibbons\, and Clyde Edgerton for the first time. Manshel:\nMr. Manshel currently serves as Senior Advisor to Hollis Public Affairs\, providing a full range of services to the private sector in dealing with all levels of government. He was Assistant Commissioner for Franchise Administration at the New York City Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications\, managing the equitable delivery of telecommunications services in public space. For 11 years he served as Executive Vice President of Greater Jamaica Development Corporation and President of its Jamaica Capital Corporation and Jamaica First Parking affiliates\, working to improve public space and the quality of life in a vibrant\, but disinvested\, African-American\, Caribbean\, Central American and South Asian neighborhood. \nMr. Manshel is the author of Learning from Bryant Park: Revitalizing Cities\, Towns and Public Spaces\, published in 2020 by Rutgers University Press. For 10 years Mr. Manshel was Associate Director and Counsel at the Bryant Park Restoration Corporation (conceptualizing and successfully implementing many of its most noted programs including its performances\, the film series and the construction and leasing of the Bryant Park Grill) and General Counsel and Director of Public Amenities to the Grand Central and 34th Street Partnerships (where he structured the first tax exempt BID bond issues\, developed and leased the Pershing Square Café\, negotiated site control for Herald and Greeley Squares\, and created the horticulture\, street vendor\, newsrack and public toilet programs).  \nPrior to that he was a partner in the Real Estate Department of law firm Kalkines Arky Zall & Bernstein LLP (now Manatt Phelps & Phillips).  He also served as Vice President of Finance and Administration at Barnard College. Mr. Manshel often assists organizations in revitalizing\, planning and managing public spaces\, works to strengthen not-for-profits’ governance and finances and blogs about downtown and public space revitalization. He holds Juris Doctor and Master of Business Administration degrees (with distinction) from New York University and a BA in Government (with honors) from Oberlin College.  \nMr. Manshel plays the renaissance lute and the theorbo.  \nAbout David Rawle:\nDavid Rawle is the retired founder of a Charleston-based marketing and communications firm representing national and international companies.  He contributed significantly to the creation and success of several major Charleston institutions\, including Kiawah Island\, Daniel Island\, Spoleto Festival USA\, and the South Carolina Aquarium.  David was the catalyst to creating Theodora Park\, an acclaimed ‘pocket park’ in downtown Charleston\, called “a beautifully tranquil public garden” by the New York Times and “a model for the future” by the Post and Courier.  CLS members and friends may recall David’s standing-room-only presentation of his book\, “What Matters.” \n

DESCRIPTION:Join our resident bookbinder and conservator\, James Davis\, to learn the art of hand bookbinding and walk away with your very own journal. Starting with paper\, board\, and thread\, students will be instructed on the techniques and practices of constructing a well made blank book from scratch. Each journal will feature hand stitching and decorative marbled paper covers. Discussions will focus on the history of bookbinding and conservation techniques for preserving books within our libraries and museums. \nAll materials will be provided and no prior bookbinding experience is necessary. All that is required is an RSVP. \nTo RSVP\,  please fill out the form at the bottom of the page. \nAbout the Author and Book:  \nDemon Copperhead\, Barbara Kingsolver’s modern recasting of the Dickens classic David Copperfield\, is an innovative story of a young boy’s struggles and persistence as he grows up in southern Appalachia. Demon Copperhead was one of two class-conscious novels to win The Pulitzer Prize for fiction on Monday\, May 8 (along with Hernan Diaz’s narrative of class and wealth set in the 1920’s\, Trust). This is the first time the Pulitzers have awarded two fiction books in the category’s 105-year history. Officials have declined to name a fiction winner several times\, mostly recently in 2012. \nDemon Copperhead was chosen by Oprah Winfrey last fall for her book club and named by The Washington Post as a top release of 2022. Kingsolver has long woven social issues into her novels\, which also include The Bean Trees and The Poisonwood Bible\, and helped establish the PEN/Bellwether Prize for Socially Engaged Fiction. \nA longtime resident of Appalachia who currently lives on a farm in southwestern Virginia\, Kingsolver set her novel “close by\,” and recently said that she regards the Pulitzer as an affirmation not just of her novel\, but of a misunderstood and overlooked part of the country. “I wrote this book for my people because we are so invisible to the rest of the world and so persistently misrepresented\,” Kingsolver said. “I couldn’t be happier (about the Pulitzer) for this reason.

SUMMARY:CAMP in the STACKS: Wild by Nature
DESCRIPTION:JUNE 12th – JUNE 16th \n\nDuring this week\, campers will experience their inner mad scientist as they explore like a naturalist and run experiments all week! \n\n $200 for Members // $225 for Non Members // $25 additional for the Lunch Bunch option\nTo reserve your camper’s spot\, please CLICK HERE. \n  \nCAMP in the STACKS details: \n\n\n\n\nAges 5-8 years old are invited to attend.\nMonday – Friday\, from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. Drop-off and pick-up will be outside in front of our marble staircase. Here\, your children will be met by a CLS member who will escort your child into the Rabbit Hole to meet Kenna\, our wonderful teacher. If your child would prefer to be walked in by you\, there are a few “loading” parking spots available across the street that don’t require payment. Otherwise\, there are several parking meter spots on King. Pickup will be at 12:00 pm for Standard Campers and 1:00 pm for our Lunch Bunch Campers.\nWe are offering a “Lunch Bunch” hour option from 12:00-1:00 pm at the end of camp for an additional $25. CLS will not be providing lunch. If you’re choosing this addition\, please send your child’s lunch for a picnic outside in our beautiful garden\, weather permitting!  We have a refrigerator\, if needed. During this additional hour\, our campers will have an opportunity to listen to an audible book and/or have time for Choice Play in the designated stations of the Rabbit Hole once they’re finished with their lunch.\nEach day’s agenda will tentatively look like this: Begin with circle time\, followed by stories and two crafts. Our campers will be able to enjoy choice play with the toys and games available in the Rabbit Hole if they have free time.

SUMMARY:Speaker Series: Sleeping with the Ancestors
DESCRIPTION:Joseph M. McGill\, Jr.\, started his Slave Dwelling Project in 2010 to draw attention to the oft-obscured and distorted experiences of formerly enslaved people. Since then\, he has hosted overnight stays in what were once slave quarters on properties throughout the South\, North\, and West. \nDuring this upcoming discussion\, Mr. McGill will discuss his recent book on the subject\, Sleeping with the Ancestors\, along with his co-author\, the journalist Herb Frazier. \nJoin us on June 13\, at 6:00PM Tickets are $10 for members\, $15 for guests.  \nTo RSVP\, click here or call 843-579-9922\, to secure your seat.  \nAbout the Book: \nIn this enlightening personal account\, one man tells the story of his groundbreaking project to sleep overnight in former slave dwellings that still stand across the country—revealing the fascinating history behind these sites and shedding light on larger issues of race in America. \nJoseph McGill Jr.\, a historic preservationist and Civil War reenactor\, founded the Slave Dwelling Project in 2010 based on an idea that was sparked and first developed in 1999. Since founding the project\, McGill has been touring the country\, spending the night in former slave dwellings—throughout the South\, but also the North and the West\, where people are often surprised to learn that such structures exist. Events and gatherings are arranged around these overnight stays\, and it provides a unique way to understand the often otherwise obscured and distorted history of slavery. The project has inspired difficult conversations about race in communities from South Carolina to Alabama to Texas to Minnesota to New York\, and all over the United States. \nSleeping with the Ancestors focuses on all of the key sites McGill has visited in his ongoing project and digs deeper into the actual history of each location\, using McGill’s own experience and conversations with the community to enhance those original stories. Altogether\, McGill and coauthor Herb Frazier give readers an important unexpected emersion into the history of slavery\, and especially the obscured and ignored aspects of that history.
