SUMMARY:"Afternoons with Harper Lee" in the Evening with Wayne Flynt
DESCRIPTION:This is a perfect example of an event where we as an institution\, and as an audience\, will get a peak behind the curtain and into the mind of one of America’s most cherished authors. The incredible friendship between Wayne Flynt and Harper Lee\, and both their families\, became somewhat of a retrospective on how friends can change our lives and why friendships are so important to us all.  \nCome join us on Tuesday\, December 13th at 6pm where we have invited Flynt to discuss the elements of multigenerational friendships\, perspective changes\, and the processing of memory and community.  \nTickets are $10 for CLS members and $15 for guest. Free for students by calling the number listed below and showing a valid ID at check in.\nTo purchase tickets\, please click here or call 843-723-9912.\nOrder “Afternoons with Harper Lee” in advance from Buxton Books by clicking HERE. \nAbout the Book:\nLee and Flynt: The Story of a Friendship – Do you remember how you met your best friend?  Was it fate\, providence\, or pure serendipity?  Friendship derives from many sources: childhood\, college\, church\, book club acquaintances\, work places. It sometimes can be traced to common interests\, isolation\, loneliness\, or even dependency.  This is the story of one intimate and entirely unpredictable friendship between Dartie and Wayne Flynt\, Harper Lee\, and Lee’s two sisters. \nImagine sitting with an esteemed writer on his or her front porch somewhere in the world and swapping life stories. Dr. Wayne Flynt got the opportunity to do just this with Nelle Harper Lee. In a friendship that blossomed over a dozen years starting when Lee relocated back to Alabama after having had a stroke\, Flynt and his wife Dartie became regular visitors at the assisted living facility that was Lee’s new home. And there the conversation began. It began where it always begins with Southern storytellers\, with an invitation to “Come in\, sit down\, and stay a while.” The stories exchanged ranged widely over the topics of Alabama history\, Alabama folklore\, family genealogy\, and American literature\, of course. On the way from beginning to end there were many detours: talks about Huntingdon College; The University of Alabama; New York City; the United Kingdom; Garden City\, Kansas; and Mobile\, Alabama\, to name just a few. Wayne and his wife were often joined by Alice Lee\, the oldest Lee sister\, a living encyclopedia on the subject of family genealogy\, and middle sister Louise Lee Conner. The hours spent visiting\, in intimate closeness\, are still cherished by Wayne Flynt. They yielded revelations large and small\, which have been shaped into Afternoons with Harper Lee. Part memoir\, part biography\, this book offers a unique window into the life and mind and preoccupations of one of America’s best-loved writers. Flynt and Harper Lee and her sisters learned a great deal from each other\, and though this is not a history book\, their shared interest in Alabama and its history made this extraordinary work possible. \nAbout the Author:\nWayne Flynt is a Southern historian and educator who retired after teaching for decades at Auburn University\, where he directed more than sixty graduate programs. He has lectured at Sichuan University in China\, at Queen’s University\, Belfast\, Northern Ireland\, at the universities of Newcastle\, Oxford\, Cambridge\, and Sussex in Great Britain\, at the Franklin Roosevelt Center in The Netherlands\, and at the University of Vienna. He is the author of fourteen books dealing with Southern politics\, history\, white poverty\, and culture (religion\, art\, music\, literature). His numerous awards include the Rembert Patrick Award for Florida History\, the Lillian Smith Prize for Nonfiction from the Southern Regional Council\, the Alabama Library Association Award for nonfiction (three times)\, the C. Vann Woodward/John Hope Franklin Prize by the Fellowship of Southern Writers\, the F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald Museum Award for Excellence in Writing\, a nomination for the Pulitzer Prize (1989)\, and the Alabama Governor’s Award for the Arts.

SUMMARY:CLS Book Club: The Marriage Portrait - Maggie O'Farrell
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Charleston Library Society’s first CLS Book Club of 2023! \nThis Winter 2023 CLS Book Club selection is The Marriage Portrait by Maggie O’Farrell. New York Times bestselling author of award-winning Hamnet\, O’Farrell\, brings the world of Renaissance Italy to jewel-bright life in this unforgettable fictional portrait of the captivating young duchess Lucrezia de’ Medici as she makes her way in a troubled court. \nCLS Book Club is open to all — whether you just finished the book\, you’re half-way through\, or you are contemplating whether or not to move the selection higher on your “To Be Read” list this discussion group has a space for you. \nThis event is free and open to the public with RSVP. To RSVP\, fill out the form at the bottom of this page. \nABOUT THE BOOK:\nFlorence\, the 1550s. Lucrezia\, third daughter of the grand duke\, is comfortable with her obscure place in the palazzo: free to wonder at its treasures\, observe its clandestine workings\, and devote herself to her own artistic pursuits. But when her older sister dies on the eve of her wedding to the ruler of Ferrara\, Modena and Reggio\, Lucrezia is thrust unwittingly into the limelight: the duke is quick to request her hand in marriage\, and her father just as quick to accept on her behalf. \nHaving barely left girlhood behind\, Lucrezia must now enter an unfamiliar court whose customs are opaque and where her arrival is not universally welcomed. Perhaps most mystifying of all is her new husband himself\, Alfonso. Is he the playful sophisticate he appeared to be before their wedding\, the aesthete happiest in the company of artists and musicians\, or the ruthless politician before whom even his formidable sisters seem to tremble? \nAs Lucrezia sits in constricting finery for a painting intended to preserve her image for centuries to come\, one thing becomes worryingly clear. In the court’s eyes\, she has one duty: to provide the heir who will shore up the future of the Ferranese dynasty. Until then\, for all of her rank and nobility\, the new duchess’s future hangs entirely in the balance. \nFull of the beauty and emotion with which she illuminated the Shakespearean canvas of Hamnet\, Maggie O’Farrell turns her talents to Renaissance Italy in an extraordinary portrait of a resilient young woman’s battle for her very survival. \n“O’Farrell pulls out little threads of historical detail to weave this story of a precocious girl sensitive to the contradictions of her station … You may know the history\, and you may think you know what’s coming\, but don’t be so sure.“ —The Washington Post \nABOUT THE AUTHOR:\nMAGGIE O’FARRELL was born in Northern Ireland in 1972. Her novels include Hamnet (winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award)\, After You’d Gone\, The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox\, The Hand That First Held Mine (winner of the Costa Novel Award)\, and Instructions for a Heatwave. She has also written a memoir\, I Am\, I Am\, I Am: Seventeen Brushes with Death. She lives in Edinburgh.

SUMMARY:Music at the Library: Yale Alley Cats - A Cappella Group
DESCRIPTION:The Library Society is delighted to welcome back the Yale Alley Cats\, the incredibly talented\, world-renowned\, all-male a cappella singing group from Yale University\, making music around the world since their founding back in 1943. The group will perform classic and contemporary songs\, all just with the power of their impressive voices. \nTickets for this concert are $25 for members and $35 for guests.\nTo purchase your tickets\, click here or call 843-723-9912. \nAbout the Yale Alley Cats:\nOn a brisk autumn night in 1943…the Alley Cats ‘founding fathers’ climbed to the top of Saybrook Tower and serenaded campus with their traditional opening number\, “Sally in Our Alley.” \n\n\nSince then\, as Yale’s classiest a cappella group\, the Cats have created over 200 original arrangements from jazz standards to Motown\, from timeless oldies to contemporary chart-toppers. They’ve released several dozen albums\, held seventy-four annual Champagne Jamborees\, and performed for public figures such as President Barack Obama\, her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II\, Martha Stewart\, and Jay Leno. In true Cat fashion\, as the first Yale a cappella group to tour internationally\, they bring their unique brand of refined all-male harmonies\, stylistic expertise\, and witty charm to destinations around the world. \nTheir musical repertoire\, all arranged by current or former Alley Cats\, reflects both their tradition and diversity. It has grown over 77 years to include a mix of everything from the Temptations and Michael Jackson to Sam Smith and Alicia Keys. They add modern pieces while staying true to their roots in jazz standards from the likes of Gershwin\, Ellington\, and Porter. The complex arrangements and acknowledged musicality allow them to perform for any audience\, from ambassadors to elementary schoolers\, making for an always exciting Alley Cat experience.

SUMMARY:The Real Rainbow Row with Harlan Greene
DESCRIPTION:Come join us for an evening with Harlan Greene – where he’ll take us on a chronological tour through of The Real Rainbow Row\, with a lens toward illuminating that gay\, transgender\, and nonbinary people\, as well as gender fluidity\, that has been as ever-present and formative as the oyster beds that shape this land by the first settlers. Greene will be in conversation with History Professor\, Dr. Stephanie Yuhl. \nTickets for this event are $10 for CLS members and $15 for guests. To purchase tickets\, call 843-723-9912 or click here. \nAbout the Book: \nThough Charleston has a reputation for holding onto the past longer than most other places\, it could not avoid the shock of change. Much has been written of the city’s history of civil rights\, and its rich African American\, women’s\, ethnic\, and religious past. One of the minority groups long left out of the club has been Charleston’s lesbian\, gay\, bisexual\, transgender\, questioning\, and other sexual minorities community. It’s not that they haven’t been here all along\, making history\, contributing greatly to the creation of one of America’s most distinctive cities. But\, even now\, with so many people out and acknowledged\, marching in the streets\, being elected to public office\, and marrying\, there are still discrepancies. There are no statues to LGBTQ people (while some discriminatory statutes linger)\, and very few official mentions anywhere. While other pasts blaze brightly\, there is just a flickering of knowledge about local LGBTQ history. \nAbout Harlan Greene: \nAn award winning author of fiction and nonfiction\, and historian\, Harlan Greene created a body of work that thematically centers on Charleston\, homosexuality\, and Jewish identity. Dripping in historic details and intricacies\, Greene’s fiction and nonfiction benefit from the skills and expertise honed in his professional life as an archivist\, researcher\, and historian. \nGreene has served as assistant director of the South Carolina Historical Society\, director of the North Carolina Preservation Consortium and the Charleston Public Library. He is the author of Mr. Skylark and the novels Why We Never Danced the Charleston and What the Dead Remember – that won the Lambda Literary Award for Gay Fiction in 1991. He was nominated for the same award for his 2005 novel The German Officer’s Boy. \nIn addition to his writing\, Greene has worked as an archivist for the College of Charleston\, including collection materials relating to Jewish history in Charleston region. His most recent work\, The Real Rainbow Row\, digs deep and uncovers a wealth of knowledge about Charleston’s LGBTQ past and present in this fascinating and informative book. \nAbout Dr. Stephanie Yuhl: \nStephanie E. Yuhl (BA Georgetown\, PhD\, Duke) is the W. Arthur Garrity\, Sr. Professor in Human Nature\, Ethics and Society and Professor of History at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester\, Massachusetts\, and former Associate Faculty in the Critical Conservation program at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design. She specializes in the social and cultural history of the twentieth-century United States\, with emphases in Southern history\, public history\, memory\, gender/sexuality\, and social movements. Yuhl is the author of the award-winning book A Golden Haze of Memory: The Making of Historic Charleston\, and “Hidden in Plain Sight: Center the Domestic Slave Trade in American Public History” (2013) on Charleston’s Old Slave Mart Museum\,” among other publications. She is a practicing public historian who has most recently served as the project lead and co-curator for the major exhibition and archive-building initiative\,  LGBTQ+ Worcester For The Record (funded in part by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation) at Worcester Historical Museum. Yuhl also served lead scholar and organizer with the Lowcountry Digital History Initiative (College of Charleston)and the Gibbes Museum of Art (Charleston\, SC) of Revisiting Prop Master: A Digital Exhibition and Catalog at the College of Charleston (2019)\, the digital recreation of a provocative 2009 anti-racist art exhibit at the Gibbes for which no physical catalog had been created. She currently directs the ongoing LGBTQ+ Worcester Oral History Project.

SUMMARY:Lite Lunch with Marie Benedict: The Mitford Affair
DESCRIPTION:“In her latest book The Mitford Affair\, Benedict plunges readers into a world of glamorous\, charismatic young British debutantes and then turns that shiny world on its head. I was blown away–learning this true story of the Mitford sisters and the roles they played for and against the Nazis was nothing short of astonishing. Benedict delivers with all that readers have come to love and expect from her: nuance\, elan\, and the most delicious storytelling.” ― Allison Pataki\, New York Times bestselling author of The Magnificent Lives of Marjorie Post \nAuthor Marie Benedict’s mission is to excavate from the past the most important\, complex and fascinating women of history and bring them into the light of present-day where we can finally perceive the breadth of their contributions as well as the insights they bring to modern day issues. The CLS\, in collaboration with Buxton Books\, welcomes Benedict for a Lite Lunch on January 25th to launch her newest novel\, The Mitford Affair. This novel\, based on a true story\, explores the role that history’s most notorious sisters — the beautiful\, brilliant\, eccentric Mitfords — played in the rise of World War II\, both for and against the Nazis. \nTickets are $25 for CLS members and $35 for guests. Free for students by calling the number listed below and showing a valid ID at check in (please note: boxed lunch not included with free admittance).\nTo purchase tickets\, click here or call 843-723-9912. \nMarie Benedict will be pre-signing books from 11:15am\, before her program\, at CLS. To pre order your book with Buxton Books\, click here. \nAbout the Book:\nBetween the World Wars\, the six Mitford sisters — each more beautiful\, brilliant\, and eccentric than the next — dominate the English political\, literary\, and social scenes. Though they’ve weathered scandals before\, the family falls into disarray when Diana divorces her wealthy husband to marry a fascist leader and Unity follows her sister’s lead all the way to Munich\, inciting rumors that she’s become Hitler’s mistress. \nAs the Nazis rise in power\, novelist Nancy Mitford grows suspicious of her sisters’ constant visits to Germany and the high-ranking fascist company they keep. When she overhears alarming conversations and uncovers disquieting documents\, Nancy must make excruciating choices as Great Britain goes to war with Germany. \nProbing the torrid political climate in the lead-up to World War II and the ways that seemingly sensible people can be sucked into radical action\, The Mitford Affair follows Nancy’s valiant efforts to stop the Nazis from taking over Great Britain\, and the complicated choices she must make between the personal and the political.\n \n  \nAbout Marie Benedict:\nMarie Benedict is a lawyer with more than ten years of experience as a litigator at two of the country’s premier law firms\, who found her calling unearthing the hidden historical stories of women. Her mission is to excavate from the past the most important\, complex and fascinating women of history and bring them into the light of present-day where we can finally perceive the breadth of their contributions as well as the insights they bring to modern day issues. \nShe embarked on a new\, thematically connected series of historical novels with The Other Einstein\, which tells the tale of Albert Einstein’s first wife\, a physicist herself\, and the role she might have played in his theories. The next novel in this series is the USA Today bestselling Carnegie’s Maid\, next is The Only Woman in the Room – the story of the brilliant inventor Hedy Lamarr\, which was the New York Times bestseller and Barnes & Noble Book Club Pick. Lady Clementine\, the story of the incredible Clementine Churchill became an international bestseller\, along with The Mystery of Mrs. Christie\, The Personal Librarian\, and Her Hidden Genius – about the brilliant British scientist Rosalind Franklin who discovered the structure of DNA but whose research was used without her permission by Crick and Watson to win the Nobel Prize. And finally\, her newest release The Mitford Affair. \nWriting as Heather Terrell\, Marie also published the historical novels The Chrysalis\, The Map Thief\, and Brigid of Kildare. Marie’s novels have been translated into twenty-nine languages.

SUMMARY:Below the Belt: Women's Health Documentary Screening

We deserve better across the entire healthcare system. Below the Belt aims to revolutionize the status quo so that people with endometriosis get what we deserve – the right to live healthy\, informed\, fulfilling lives.” – Executive Producer\, Rosario Dawson \n\n\n\nCLS is honored to screen Below the Belt as one of our Documentary Series on January 26th at 6pm – Marking its southern debut. To name a few: Hilary Clinton\, Rosario Dawson\, Senator Elizabeth Warren\, Senator Mitt Romney\, and our very own local celebrity\, Jessica Murnane. The undercurrent mission of all who are involved in this film is to provide tools for ways to ask the tough health questions and to be taken serious to a wide female audience who are in search for real solutions. At this screening\, Murnane will be welcoming and in conversation with Director and Producer\, Shannon Cohn. There will be a Q&A at the end of the film and a Know Your Endo book signing with Jessica Murnane. \nTickets are $10 for CLS members and $15 for guests. Free for students by calling the number listed below and showing a valid ID at check in.\nTo purchase tickets\, please click here or call 843-723-9912. \nAbout the Film:\nIn the personal & inspiring stories of four patients urgently searching for answers to mysterious symptoms\, Below the Belt exposes widespread problems in our healthcare systems. \nThrough the lens of endometriosis\, a disease that affects 1 in 9 women\, the film shows how women are often dismissed\, discounted & disbelieved. From societal taboos and gender bias to misinformed doctors and profit-driven healthcare\, the film reveals how millions are effectively silenced and how\, by fighting back\, they can improve healthcare for all women.
