They’re free\, monthly events that feature a short talk\, Q+A and breakfast. CreativeMornings started in NYC in 2008 and has since grown to over 207 cities all over the world. The local chapters not only celebrate a city’s creative talent but also promote an open space to connect with like-minded people. CreativeMornings happen one Friday a month from 8:30am to 9:30am. \nAbout Stacy:\nStacy Willingham worked as a copywriter and brand strategist for various marketing agencies before deciding to write fiction full time. She earned her BA in Magazine Journalism from the University of Georgia and MFA in Writing from the Savannah College of Art & Design. Her first novel\, A Flicker in the Dark\, was published on January 11\, 2022 by Minotaur Books and February 3\, 2022 by HarperCollins UK. A Flicker in the Dark was recently adapted into an HBO Max TV Show and was released earlier this year. \nShe currently lives in Charleston\, South Carolina\, with her husband\, Britt\, and her Labradoodle\, Mako.

DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to host The Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art at the College of Charleston for a special speaker series with Director & Chief Curator Katie McCampbell Hirsch in conversation with Multimedia Artist Kirsten Stolle. \nThe day before the Halsey Institute opens its Fall exhibition\, Only You Can Prevent A Forest: August 26 – December 10\, 2022\, Stolle and Hirsch will highlight what goes on behind the scenes during the sometimes years-long formation of a museum exhibition and the important partnership between artist and curator for any installation or permanent collection.  In addition\, they will share the artist’s story that inspires her work and that perspective for experiencing this new exhibit. \n\nTo RSVP to this free event\, fill out the form below. \n\nAbout Kirsten Stolle:\nKirsten Stolle is a visual artist working in collage\, drawing\, and installation. Her research-based practice is grounded in the investigation of corporate propaganda\, greenwashing\, and food politics. She is a Pollock-Krasner Grant recipient and her work is included in the collections of the San Jose Museum of Art\, Crocker Art Museum\, and Minneapolis Institute of Arts. Solo exhibitions include NOME (Berlin)\, Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (NC)\, Turchin Center for Visual Arts (NC)\, Winthrop University Art Galleries (SC)\, Tracey Morgan Gallery (NC)\, and Dolby Chadwick Gallery (CA).  Group exhibitions include the North Carolina Museum of Art\, Balzer Projects (Basel)\, Fridman Gallery (NYC)\, Barcelona Biennial of Thought\, The Billboard Creative (CA) and her work has been published in the Atlantic\, Poetry Magazine\, and Photograph. At the Halsey Institute\, Katie has recently curated exhibitions by Coulter Fussell\, Jibade-Khalil Huffman\, Dyani White Hawk\, and Kukuli Velarde. Prior to moving to Charleston\, she lived in Shanghai\, China\, where she worked as Senior Curator at island6 Arts Center in the city’s famed M50 Art District. Katie received her M.A. in Art History from the Florida State University\, where her research focused on the visual cultures of Mesoamerica. \nAbout the Exhibition:\nKirsten Stolle – Only You Can Prevent A Forest // August 26 – December 10\, 2022 \nUsing appropriation\, wordplay\, and humor\, Kirsten Stolle co-opts advertising strategies used by agrichemical corporations to resurface and critique company history. For her exhibition\, Only You Can Prevent A Forest\, Stolle will create photo-based collages\, visual poetry interventions\, text-based sound animation\, a neon wall piece\, and her first site-responsive sculptural installation. Building upon her decade-long research into companies like Bayer/Monsanto and Dow Chemical\, the work will forefront historical ties to chemical warfare and reveal persistent greenwashing. Stolle’s work interrogates the global influence of chemical companies on our food supply and their consistent efforts to downplay effects of their toxic products on our health and environment.\n \nOnly You Can Prevent A Forest is funded in part by a grant from South Arts in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and the South Carolina Arts Commission\, Charleston magazine\, and Mindelle Seltzer and Robert Lovinger. \nAbout the Halsey Institute:\nThe Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art at the College of Charleston provides a multidisciplinary laboratory for the production\, presentation\, interpretation\, and dissemination of ideas by innovative visual artists from around the world. Free for students by calling the number listed below and showing a valid ID at check in.\nTo purchase tickets\, click here or call 843-723-9912. \nDrawing on first-person interviews with American pilots\, bombardiers and Japanese survivors\, after the most destructive air attack in history\, Scott delivers a harrowing and gripping account of the night when nearly 300 American B-29s thundered into the skies over Tokyo on March 9-10\, 1945. \nBlack Snow is the story of the devastating operation – in which killed more than 100\,000 men\, women\, and children – that was orchestrated by Major General Curtis LeMay\, who famously remarked: “If we lose the war\, we’ll be tried as war criminals.” James M. Scott reconstructs in granular detail that horrific night\, and describes the development of the B-29\, the capture of the Marianas for use as airfields\, and the change in strategy from high-altitude daylight “precision” bombing to low-altitude nighttime incendiary bombing. Most importantly\, the raid represented a significant moral shift for America\, marking the first time commanders deliberately targeted civilians which helped pave the way for the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki five months later. \nAbout James M. Scott:\nA former Nieman Fellow at Harvard\, James M. Scott is the author of Rampage\, which was named one of the Best Books of 2018 by the editors at Amazon\, Kirkus\, and Military Times and was chosen as a finalist for the prestigious Gilder Lehrman Prize for Military History by the New York Historical Society. His other works include Target Tokyo\, a 2016 Pulitzer Prize finalist\, The War Below\, and The Attack on the Liberty\, which won the Rear Admiral Samuel Eliot Morison Award. Both musicians were organists\, choir directors\, teachers\, and administrators in addition to their achievements as composers. DESCRIPTION:In honor of Joey Morant\, a talented Charlestonian jazz musician\, the City of Charleston has commemorated October 8th as a day in his honor. \nThis informative and entertaining evening will highlight stories of Morant through the eyes of musicians\, family and friends. With musical interludes\, attendees will be able to experience the lasting legacy of a jazz legend with Charleston roots who was an integral part of the Piccolo Spoleto Festival and the MOJA Arts Festival. To celebrate him and learn about his remarkable philanthropy\, JOEY MORANT – ALL THAT JAZZ INC – 501(c)3 Legacy Foundation\, we invite you\, our community members\, to an evening of jazz and joy in Charleston’s Living Room. Come join the Charleston Library Society on October 7th at 6pm. \nTo RSVP to this free event\, please fill out the form below or call 843-723-9912. \nAbout Joey Morant and his Legacy Foundation:\nJOEY MORANT – ALL THAT JAZZ INC – 501(c)3 Legacy Foundation\, focuses on helping musically gifted youth achieve creative and performing goals through scholarships and resources. \nThroughout his career\, Joey performed with industry greats such as Ray Charles\, Les Paul\, James Brown\, Dizzy Gillespie\, Lionel Hampton\, and Paul McCartney. His talents took him around the world\, but his remarkably energetic\, captivating and commanding entertaining style is what remains alive in Charleston to this day. \nAfter his passing on July 29th\, 2021\, the JOEY MORANT – ALL THAT JAZZ INC was formed by his devoted son. The foundation carries two main missions. 1. To create and provide scholarships\, mentoring and lessons\, and various other resources to musically gifted 8th – 12th grade students in underserved communities in Charleston\, and the Tri-County area to help them reach their musical goals and aspirations. 2.
